Couriers: Off Grid

Rate this book
The last remnants of humanity cling to survival on the Grid, a narrow patch of the planet visible to the world’s only remaining spy satellite. A secretive group of Analysts use the satellite feed to warn settlements of danger before it strikes. But their view of the Grid is only refreshed every 30 minutes, and the demons that live on the edge of their vision are getting craftier in their raids.

Anyuka is on the verge of becoming a full-fledged Analyst, working directly under her father in their base hidden in the mountains. A base they never leave. Nor do they permit any form of wired or wireless communication for fear of giving away their position. To get their warnings out to the settlers before it's too late, they use Couriers riding armored SlitPods, the fastest tech left over from before the apocalypse. But the mounting price of their secrecy forces Anyuka to question her father’s stark moral calculus, and begin to doubt their entire strategy for protecting humankind.

Finn is a veteran of the war to protect the Grid, leading the team of Couriers on their Slitpods through this hellscape of bandits, demons, and mysterious outsiders in a daily race to save outlying settlements from destruction. The SlitPods they ride are immensely powerful machines but, built on old, forgotten tech, they are ticking time bombs. Once they suffer enough damage they instantly explode. Finn’s concern for the safety of his team is compounded after a number of incidents on the plains convince him that their presence is hurting the settlers as much as helping them. Perhaps even more.

To be transparent let me first say that I had never read any of Jay's books. I found him on his Vlog on Youtube I liked his life story of living in Paris & I decided to jump in on his Kickstarter for his book. I am an avid reader but SciFi is not my usual read.

I really enjoyed the book once I got into it. Not having a science fiction background it took me a while to picture some of the images. I liked the characters and the relationships going on with them. I found that I really couldn't wait to see what happened from one chapter scene to the next.

This is a first in a trilogy and I have lots of questions in my mind at the end to see where it leads in the next book.

I think you will enjoy it. I was not disappointed in this book

A very different Post-apocolyptic novel. One that I found to be real, vivid, and fresh.

I bought this book on Kickstarter and was not disappointed. Jay Swanson writes a compelling story of a post apocalyptic world where different disciplines work together to keep the compounds save. The rest of mankind comes second and sometimes sacrifices have to be made... The story takes you to a world filled with danger, distrust, action and sorrow. Recommended and looking forward to part 2!
