Falen Thana is one of the cold, vicious—borderline sociopathic asshole—assassins from an assassin’s guild in Seattle. They are charged with ridding the world of Evil, fighting to keep the ever-changing balance between the nefarious and virtuous. In doing this, Fal prefers solitude, but it leaves her frigid and more than difficult to approach. Just as well. She’s not much of a social butterfly, anyway. Due to demons from her past, Fal has refused to allow any emotion other than rage consume her, turning her into a destructive monster as self-defense. Getting too close and comfortable with anyone could get them killed, and Fal will not let that happen. Not again. On one mission, Fal finds herself in a Seattle club, waiting out her next target. Nina, a sapphire-eyed, poetic spitfire, catches her attention from across the bar and Fal is caught off guard by the kind smile Nina sends her way. No one smiles that way at an assassin. After an incident involving Fal saving Nina’s life, they become connected on a level neither of them understands. But, this connection is forbidden in the assassin lifestyle and punishable by death. Hunted by her demons and haunted by her past, Fal must discover what she values most, and if she’s willing to risk her life—and Nina’s—to get it.
Prepare to descend into the abyss with K.C., an author whose love for the awful and macabre is as profound as her characters' struggles. K.C. prides herself on weaving shadows that are not just dark, but disturbingly authentic, tackling trauma, mental illness, and death with a realism that will make your skin crawl. She eschews the rose-tinted glasses of happy endings, promising to never gloss over the dreadful parts of being alive. While K.C. isn't afraid to expose humanity's darkest underbelly, she also illuminates the resilient glimmers of love, self-acceptance, and heroism. It's a journey through the beautiful and the damned, so prepare yourself for a "killer" read. You'll find K.C. conjuring these tales from her book-lined lair, saving lives as a nurse, or, more often than not, orchestrating a delicate truce between her three cats and two dogs, who are perpetually plotting to steal anything edible (especially you, Dave).
4.25 Stars. This was my kind of book. I love good lesfic paranormal stories and this just clicked all the boxes for me. If you keep up with my reviews you will notice I tend to pick some awful Kindle Unlimited books. I’m so happy to find this little gem.
This book is about Fal, a werewolf assassin. It is her job to hunt down the evilest of humans and destroy them. She loves her job but constantly wonders if she is a monster. The blood lust of killing these evil people calls to her. She is pretty antisocial since she believes feelings will make her bad at her job. When she meets Nina, a human that she can’t seem to scare away, Fal can’t stop thinking about her. It’s the number one rule. Lupi Assassins and humans can’t mix, but maybe Nina is worth breaking all the rules.
This is a paranormal-action-romance. There is plenty of blood and violence. This book is dark and gritty at times, but it’s filled with hope and a good romance. For me it was pure entertainment and I had to force myself to stop reading to go to bed at 5am.
This is first person, which I enjoy if it is done well and this is a perfect example. Being in Fal’s head, all her confusing emotions were well done. The physical distance to her character is so close that you feel what she is going through. The other characters, including Nina, are written well enough that you don’t feel like you are missing anything not being in their head space. It was very easy to like Fal and Nina and hope for a HEA.
This is the first book in a series. The book left off on a mini cliffhanger. It’s enough to get me excited for the next book, but not enough to feel painful. The main storyline was completed in this book.
The book is not perfect. This is a debut and there are a few bumps. For a Kindle Unlimited book I thought the mistakes I noticed were pretty small. And most importantly it’s the kind of paranormal lesfic book I wish there were more of. If you are a paranormal fan and don’t mind violence, give this book a shot. I will absolutely be reading the second book as soon as it comes out.
2.5 stars. I couldn't get into this at all. It's definitely not a bad first attempt at writing a book. But I couldn't connect with any of the characters, especially Falon in whose head we live for all the length of the book.
Her character is inconsistent, the book starts with her telling the readers how she's an unfeeling monster, yet she's warm to her brother and Nathan. And she goes batshit insane about random materialistic things like new cars and pizza. After finishing the book (which was really hard for me this time around) I still can't describe her character all that well. I feel like things were not thought through enough.
The same applies to the world building. A religious cult hunting werewolves who do no harm to regular humans at all and only kill sex traffickers and what not. They shouldn't hunt them! They should thank them! The reasoning behind the whole hunters' thing is too flimsy, not to mention all of them being completely flat as characters and also stupid for tattooing marks on their necks so they can be discovered instantly.
And what about police?!?!? Why werewolves have to kill all these generic baddies? They have information on them, just forward it to police or FBI? But apparently, those guys don't exist in this universe.
I also didn't buy into the whole "assassins must never love or feel at all" thing, nor the young werewolves being so completely naive of the real world that they can't function properly if outside their little werewolf compound.
Then there's Nina the bubbly writer that reacts to everything Falon is in a really unrealistic way. "Oh, you're a werewolf and kill people for a living? That's fine, let's cuddle." I mean...
It feels like this could be a good book if only things were thought out more. The book reads like a really early draft that needs A LOT of polishing.
Unfortunately, not my cup of tea this time. But I wish the author all the best, mastery only comes with experience.
The story itself could have been engaging, but it felt like a first draft. Full of info dumps and names in every line in every conversation. The only reason I finished it was the sapphic relationship, and honestly, I skipped most part at the end and only read the dialogue.
Maybe I'll give a try to the next installment, hoping the writing gets better.
But damn, did i enjoy it! I enjoyed this book more than i expected to be honest. The storyline quite intense. And i really like Nina. She is such a sweet and feisty woman.
I have a few complains though. Though quite of nice that I kind of understand how Falen feel and such (the book is writen 1st POV of Falen) but it spent so much time in Falen’s head. The reaction of Nina when Falen reveal what she really is, was quite low? Understated? I mean, she is an assassin here and a werewolf as well! But Nina didnt seem to react strongly at all. And one more thing, not really a complain, but dont quite understand; Falen is the best werewolf assassin but she seem like made lots of mistake and catch too many off guard. But that can be because she didnt shift for so long? Ehh? Idk.
I didn’t much care for this book initially but I’m certainly glad I didn’t give up on it. It got better and better and by midway I was completely riveted. It’s a slow burn romance (for which I’m a sucker) and I always enjoy books about wolf shifters. I am already anticipating the sequel...
I haven't read that many lesfic paranormals but I have read a certain number of paranormals. I'd probably say that this is a little more focused on plot and platonic relationships than most paranormals? But it still has a lot of the standard beats--"pack" type secret society, shifting, alpha protagonist, soulmates, vigilantism etc. I liked it, but I did have a few pet peeves.
Things I Liked -Falen's a fairly unique protagonist. I mean, to be fair her alpha angst is not so different from the typical male alpha in a lot of paranormals, but I can't say I've seen her type in a lesfic before. I like her level of butch (yay for hating your makeover, I feel that) and her chosen one angst, though it took me a while to warm up to her because she's so dramatic and grim.
-I really liked Nathan and Ash, Falen's brother and her sort of adopted brother figure. It's good to see Falen developing relationships of the familial sort as she becomes a more open person and allows herself to feel more emotions throughout the book. In particular, Ash is such a warm and loving brother! I really liked him.
-The scene where Falen tries ice cream for the first time and hates it because it's much too sweet for her werewolf senses (yet somehow she still likes greasy pizza, hmmm).
-Falen's terrible secret keeping skills. Example: Falen and Nina are having pillow talk and Falen mentions that she "gets rid of people like Damien". Nina: Wait, what? You what? Get rid of people like that? You don't mean like...kill them, do you? Falen: Uh. I mean. Yeah, I mean like kill them. NINA THIS IS NOT HOW YOU REVEAL TO YOUR GIRLFRIEND THAT YOU'RE AN ASSASSIN OMG.
-"Pennyforward" and "Austin Woodriver" lols.
Things I Was Not So Into -Nina's nice and all, but for the first half of the book all I was getting from her was "generic nice girl" vibes, and even at the end I'm not sure I feel like I really know her, not as much as I'd like to.
-Lupi is shady as hell! I genuinely dislike this organization; they raise every member of their species to be either assassins or assassin back-up from a veeeeery early age, don't allow members to associate with outsiders, and tell their assassin members explicitly to suppress all emotion. Tbh I think maybe we're not supposed to like Lupi? But I also was kind of eh about the vigilantism aspect... maybe superhero/vigilante ethos are wearing on me but I'm getting less into the whole "taking justice into your own hands (through brutal murder)" schtick. I don't really blame Falen for it--she was literally raised into it--but seriously, Lupi, what the hell?
-And then there were some things that just threw me, like prophecies coming out of nowhere in the last couple chapters, the Chosen One aspect getting amped up, and .
Overall It was pretty good. I'll probably read the sequel. Seriously side-eyeing Lupi tho, I hope that organization either burns to the ground or has Falen enact some serious reforms.
4.5 stars! Found another book that made me read and finish within 24 hours. This book is full of angst coupled with badass characters which is the reason why I love this book and will sure dread until the sequel comes up. It's just sad that some of the music Fal likes doesnt really exist in the real world (pls correct me if I'm wrong) because I tried to find the titles and I failed. I'm a person who likes books with badass characters who likes music and stuff. Even finding and playing the music the same time it pops out from the book.
The author did great in giving this book a touch of reality with what's going on in our world today. And with Nina's dark past, I just loved her more. Can't wait for The Chosen #2. Wish I could grab a hard copy here in the Philippines :(
I just read this was this author's first book. Well I was very impressed. I read allot of werewolf books. This one was so different, but a great different. The storyline is easy to follow and the characters are loveable. I did like how the werewolf community in this book had different beliefs then other werewolf books. I definitely recommend this book.
As I understood it, this was the author's first novel. It has potential. I liked the story and character building. I hope they keep writing and give us a sequel.
I was excited to see there was a second book available for the Chosen series so I grabbed this one to read again and I'm so glad I did. It's even better a second time.
Fal's described as a sociopathic asshole but I think she's just a badarse who's afraid to care and feel things. She's as human as the rest of us even with all of her Lupi-ness. I think she's awesome and Nina truly brings out the best in her and helps with her fears. I thought Nina was annoying when she's first introduced, but the little human grew on me and she's even more of a badarse than Fal. This tiny little pocket rocket is by far the strongest out of all of them and she's a little human. The two of them together are awesome and are up there with my list of favourite couples.
Also, the death sentence rule for assassins who fall in love is stupid.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
fal and nina are such beautiful characters and the way they are written is just utterly devastating in the best way. my heart was continually breaking for them.
the author also made me love the side characters?? which a lot of the time isn’t possible for me because there just isn’t enough development. but by god are these characters good. and nathan?? the child?? i hate children in books but that’s my son, my boy.
the only thing that made me a bit disappointed (only a furrowed brow moment) was the fact that when nina and fal reunite nina wasn’t more pissed off?? because i’d have been furious like even with the situation they were in i’d have lost my mind shouting at fal but maybe that’s just me.
I loved this book and I’m glad it’s a series. It’s full of silly fantasy stuff but if that’s your favorite your in luck. The characters are developed and have you rooting for them. This is a first effort by this author and I think she has a future here. Enjoy the read.
It's really too bad the cover to this didn't feature Fal. Black clothes, combat boots, bi-colored eyes, face paint, a prominent eye scar and armed with a gun and knife...yeah that would've made an eye-catching cover! I had to make do with picturing a more lethal version of Raven from Dannika Dark's Crossbreed series since that heroine also dresses dark and has bi-colored eyes.
I thought this was a very good first novel. Yes, some of the ideas/themes will feel familiar to the genre but there are enough subtle twists and changes that also make it unique. Of course the obvious genre twist is that the protagonist is an Alpha female and that her mate is a human female. But there's also a mystery about being 'chosen' and what that really means for the future of the Lupi. You get the feeling that as an organization, the Lupi have grown stagnant in their limited roles. So the forbidden pairing of Fal & Nina isn't just another excuse for romance but also a shakeup of the status quo. It will be interesting to see where this series goes from here.
I hope the next book has less music lyrics and more internal dialogue from Fal. Maybe it's just me, but I find reading music lyrics very distracting in books. As for the internal dialogue, I just felt the need for a little more thinking from Fal. Because she is struggling so hard to regain her balance of emotions, it would have been nice to hear her inner voice a bit more often. I could catch glimpses of her frustration, awkwardness and humour but it was very fleeting. Hopefully we'll get more of that in the next book so her character can really develop.
The story was very different from others I have read about people that shifted into wolves. The Wrath was about Chosen wolves (or Lupi) that lived as people but were trained as assassins to save humans from the evil around them--killers, pedophiles, etc. The main character, Falen, is a Lupi who achieved the rank of Alpha assassin, motivated by the murder of her mother human killers. But the assassin jobs leave Falen socially isolated and unable to make friends or have a relationship, until she meets Nina, a human. Their friendship grows in spite of the fact that Falen knows Lupi are forbidden to associate with humans, and both she and Nina could be put to death for becoming lovers. The love affair grows in spite of the threat, and the assassin jobs that Falen undertake show her character and goodness as well as her deadly talents. I had hoped for more description of Falen and Nina's sexual connections, but the story carries their love beyond the sexual and works with their journey as they grow together. The story had me unable to put the book down, reading late into the night. I look forward to reading Book 2 by this author.
In the beginning words ran long, like... It felt like there was too much back story, too much information, just... too much. But then, I was kind of upset that I had to put it down long enough to sleep because I’d read other books yesterday and I couldn’t keep my eyes open at 5 in the morning. There were maybe 3 minor spelling errors in 366 pages so it was very pleasing to my grammar freak of a brain. The storyline is and will be good due to the cliffhanger (thanks for ruining my life, dear author, and making me wait for a whole new book!). And if the author somehow reads this random review - writing is SO hard and the fact that you managed to complete it to the point that I’m leaving you a review, means you did good. Don’t give up, I read too fast and I need more of your brainchild.
Is book two out? That’s all I can think about. With most books that I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy it I always jump to some random page further into the book to see if it will have me curious enough to find out the ending or if it will make me want to read from the beginning. I’ll say I was hooked and couldn’t read from the first page to the very last fast enough. I found the book painted a picture with just the right amount of description. It was just enough to get a picture going and not too much to the point where I just wanted to skip ahead. I need more.
4.5 stars if I could. Really enjoyed the book and characters. It was gritty and dark, but still had a nice romance story to it. Characters were great and well written, definitely left me wanting more to read. My only complaint about the book is a formatting issue, each paragraph seemed to start in the middle of my tablet and phone screen which was kind of annoying.
When i first started reading this, i didn't dislike it.. but i didn't like it either. I kept reading and eventually got sucked into the story line. Overall, loved it. Looking forward to the next one!
I liked the story and the characters very much. There is one part I am highly upset over and the Author’s wife’s idea! I know about having to listen to your wife so I get over it. This book is worth reading and highly recommended. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Omg this book had me biting my nails the whole time. I am just in awe of this story! It is worth reading and I fell in love with the characters. To anyone that is looking to read this, it is amazing!!
First person is not my favorite . I'm just nosey. I want to know what everyone is thinking at all times. That being said, I will be reading the next book in the series. I recommend this book . I enjoyed it.
