An enemy thought long dead waits in the shadows. It’s taken nearly two centuries to reach the New Canaan System. Four beautiful, pristine new worlds await the colonists, but there’s trouble in paradise.
Upon arrival, Governor Richards gives Erin a special mission: to build secret shipyards in the outer system, hidden within moons and safe from prying eyes.
Yet while Erin makes good progress in space, construction efforts on the planet of Carthage falter, causing the governor to call her down to the colony world to get things back on track.
To speed things up, Erin uses the colony’s most valuable tool: their picotech. But a sinister agent attempts to steal a picotech module, and the colonists realize their past troubles have returned to haunt them.
Now she's in a race to identify the perpetrator and keep New Canaan's picotech out of the hands of the colonists’ enemies, who would use it to destroy them.

She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.
Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Excellent stand-alone book and the beginning of a new trilogy! Erin and Isa and Martin are wonderful characters who deal with professional as well as personal difficulties as the building of new worlds moves forward. A clever and hateful villain, of course, is there to make sure nothing is easy. Jump on into Aeon 14! The water is fine!
A Good start of a series. Though it seems to focus more on the character building. The main character is a bit different than the other Aeon 14 books in that she is an engineer not a fighter. I look forward to seeing how this plays out in the next book.
I had to stop reading at the half way mark. The two stars are only a recognition that the story is breezy and also part of a popular series which may prove enough to entertain a lot of readers.
I was disappointed by Cooper in this book and others in the series. The writing seems uneven to me. The writing has an almost teen level undertone. The dialogue doesn't reflect much depth and the characters are not the richest. The plot finally broke the believability barrier. I am not sure that I'm going to try any more of the Aeon 14 books.
Throughout the series, there is one technology that every foreign power seems willing to destroy the Intrepid in the attempt to acquire. The tech is not deployed in any project in the system, which is being massively reshaped because of the presence of watching powers.
The POV's bounce around but that's not a problem. It may be the cause of some confusion on my part. A supervising engineer (early thirties, lesbian) is flirting with a middle aged, self-involved loner of a marine biologist. I felt sorry for the guy. While she's doing that, she manages to get that number one secret tech released in order to not disturb young sea turtles with the vibrations from conventional drilling too near a beach. The tech is guarded by twelve people better suited for WalMart duty. After an attempt at theft of the top secret tech, the engineer and her girlfriend are going to guard the device themselves overnight, hoping that the enemy agent tries again. Neither is combat trained and one can't stay awake?
The agent is not operating alone because if he's successful, his identity will be blown and he still has to escape the system with his prize. The agent involved must be a killer (surprising how many spies are), to ensure nothing stops him. No military unit is available to guard the tech or replace the twelve guards already deployed, who were not able on their own to foil the first attempt.
The plot together with the writing style, was too weak and unbelievable for me to keep reading. I don't think that I will rush to read anymore Aeon 14 books, even though I liked Cooper in others series.
To many a fan we know how that Tanis and Co lunch a very heavy weight in any engagement but it's the heart and soul of the people and their tech which just settles the issues more often than not. So here is a side series where we find out why their industrial bases are so advanced ,and we get to see more or what kind of people they are at home as well. Some very interesting tech and some very familiar faces, this first book is a bit more of an introduction and may appeal more to the die hard fan but it's still a good 4.5 stars i reckon and im sure JJ Green will do well with further books in this series.
HI and Michael are presenting us with a new series that is giving us a really good look at the new home of the people of the Intrepid. And like the problems encountered in their various missions, the dangers are there. Their enemies will stop at nothing to get the secrets of picotech. Nothing. Erin and company have their hands full. Excellent first novel in this series. It presented us with great characters, both good and evil. Ready for the next!
An enjoyable read this one. While certainly still has suspense and action, it's smaller scope compared to other Aeon 14 books allows us to see more of what every day life is like for the characters, and also how the economy works and what terraforming planets is like. I think it also shows well how freer society is in the future, with people not hung up on things that don't matter as much. You still get a variety of characters with a number of flaws, but paints a nice picture of what the future could be like. I look forward to reading more in this series :)
I liked this addition to the series very much. We get to see some of the problems the colonists face and the solutions they find. We follow Erin, who we met previously in other books. Tanis makes a few brief appearances. We are also introduced to several new characters. I especially like Martin, who is a scientist seeding the oceans , so we get a lesson in the eco system. And an old enemy makes a try to steal the Pico tech. I especially
Great story, enjoyed a lot great time in the saga.
J.J Green is a fantastic addition to the team of talented people working with MD Cooper fleshing out the AEON 14 verse. Great new characters well written and great background details. Can't wait till the next installment in the series.
Aeon 14 is an ever expanding tapestry of richly told stories filled with the most interesting of characters and grand adventures. This small corner of the Aeon 14 universe focuses on just one of those characters, and some of her tales of love and struggle in the new colony of Carthage. Lives up to the high standards set by this series in general.
The attempts to steal the picotech feature heavily in this story, giving the action and excitement, but what fascinated me most about this story was the relationships. It delves into the unexpected difficulties of connecting while working hard to create a new society. Very interesting.
An interesting story, slightly different than most, Tanis is on a tour and Erin has to work through the building of launch bases, using their incredible pico technology, which is desired by everyone. We are also introduced to two new characters who offer Erin interesting alternatives to the black!
World building 101. Loved this book and the explanations of creating a diverse marine eco system. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. I look forward to more from this series 😁
I'd give the sub-series Carthage/Tyre/Troy 2.5-3 stars. It's pleasant enough, but not particularly well plotted. (Sort of generic television quality storylines.) I give the authors credit for some effort to give the primary characters some personal growth through the stories.
The kindle price-point was very reasonable, so I'd say I got my money's worth out of them.
Yet another great story for the readers within the Aeon 14 series. We have a little bit more details on what was happening during the building of the New Canaan region of space. This first book where we are introduced more fully with Erin and her role building the required secret shipyards. We also find that the enemy is still attempting to capture the picotech, and will do whatever they need to do in order to lay there hands on it. Looking forward to seeing where our author takes us next.
