The Artisan and the Duke

Rate this book
Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton, never cared much for society and flew in the face of tradition whenever he could, but from the moment he met the strange artisan shouting out a rallying call in the streets of London, Gregory’s curiosity is peaked.

When he discovers that what he thought was a young man is really a beautiful young woman, Gregory is intrigued. Together they stumble into a mystery surrounding a fire that should never have happened, and get pulled into the darker corners of society.

Jules Kelley’s opinion of high society is pretty low. So, when a noble playing commoner stumbles upon her and her secret she is all but certain that things could not get worse, until there is a fire and a raid on the Mason Guild. Gregory may have saved her from the guards, but is he just saving her from one evil only to pull her into another?

"The Artisan and the Duke" is a historical romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

Gregory St Claire is a different kind of duke. He cares about the problems of people of the lower classes. He has the habit of going on that side of the city, disguised in simpler clothes, and sees and hears everything he can.

When he returns to walk in the middle of his peers, he is the charming duke, who continues to run away from marriage despite his mother's efforts to introduce him to the good ladies of the season.

His younger brother, Fredrick, is convalescing from war wounds, when he had to go to the battlefield instead of Gregory because his brother had just inherited the duchy.

In one of Gregory's wanderings, he hears a little confusion of artisans on the street. The guy who was speaking had passion in his words and seemed to be right in his complaints about the nobles. But to Gregory, there was something wrong with that guy. He looked small and too delicate, as if he could be a girl.

Jules Kelley, the passionate speech artiste carried the responsibility of supporting the widowed mother and two small sisters. This worried Mrs Kelley especially because Jules was Julia.
When her father needed an apprentice, it was to Julia that he taught his craft and it gave her a chance that she could continue his work. But to gain some respect, she had to pretend to be a guy.

When a factory fire strikes and several workers die, it catches Gregory's attention. But the most shocking thing is when there is the suspicion that the fire was criminal.
Gregory and Jules/Julia begin a hunt to find out who is to blame and the reason for such a crime, at the same time stronger feelings are born between them.
But how could a duke have as a commoner as a wife who had a passion for her work and would never abandon her family?

Very interesting story, but I did not feel connected with the couple

A slightly different take on a fake betrothal regency romance. Strong heroine, who wasn’t afraid to take risks. Interesting to learn about artisans and guilds too.

I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review.

A 🔥Fire Brings Them Together

London, June 1819
A factory 🔥fire brings Jules💃💋, a labor activist, and Gregory🐺🍆🌋, a Duke, together with a common goal.

When Jules' father dies, there is no male heir to inherit, so they lose everything and she becomes the male breadwinner in her family, in order to keep it together. She becomes a mason's apprentice, which was her father's trade, her mother sews, and her two sisters also have menial jobs. All to keep a roof over their heads.

Jules💃💋 spends time in the square promoting and speaking about fair labor practices, and that ends up getting the attention of the guard. They don't want the common people to have decent working conditions or earn a decent wage, so raids are conducted, rounding up and arresting dissenters.

Gregory🐺🍆🌋,the Duke of Thornton, sees Jules💃💋 at the site of the factory 🔥fire helping to carry bodies💀 from the ashes. He sees a short handsome lad but soon he discovers Jules💃💋 is a young woman and he is infatuated. The 🔥fire seems to be arson for insurance purposes!
When the guard goes on another raid to arrest labor dissenters, he convinces her and her mother and sisters to move to his townhouse. He will tell society that Jules💃💋 is his betrothed💍! That kills two birds with one stone. It helps Jules💃💋 get away from poverty and gets Gregory's mother off his back about getting married.
It's a fake fiance the old fashioned way!

This is an interesting book📑 about the time period and it has a lot of depth to it. Well written!

Gregory St Claire, Duke of Thornton, dressed like a commoner so he could go out and mingle on the streets of London to see “the plight of the common man” for better understanding. A man stood on a crate saying that change was needed. He was not calling for violence but the artisans had to stand up for their livelihood. After the speech, Gregory tried to talk to the young man. But there was something odd about him. His cheekbones looked too delicate.

Jules returned home and talked with her mother. Their family had lost everything when Mr. Kelley died and left no male heirs. So Jules pretended to be his son and apprentice to protect her mother and sisters, and she had been working as a junior mason before she was promoted to junior artisan. She told her mother about the man she met who claimed to be a herder but had soft hands. He also walked into the center of London which made no sense for a herder.

A factory burned and Jules went to help carrying water buckets and later carrying out bodies of those who died. Strangely, the watermen never showed up to fight the fire. And the owner, Marcus, had not been seen around since the first day after. Word was that the fire may have been deliberate. When Lord Gregory read that in the paper, he rode to the factory to see for himself and ran into the young man. He was pretty sure that he was recognized from his previous encounter. When he went back later in his disguise as commoner again, he saw the young man and pulled him into an alley to talk. But in the scuffle, the cap fell off and Jules’ long hair fell around her face, making it obvious the “young man” was really a woman! He followed her home and, because Jules would no longer have work with her fellow tradesmen, he offered to get them out of London in case the guardsmen came to arrest Jules.

This was a wonderful book that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had a light touch of humor that kept the more serious moments in perspective. The characters, both the main ones and the secondary, were very well developed and likable. I enjoyed the dialog among the family members, both Jules’ family and the St. Claire family. While Jules’ family is taken to safety at Gregory’s country estate, he tells his mother and others that she is his betrothed to keep her safe and acceptable while they track down a mystery about a factory burning down. You will love this book – it was exciting, fun, full of love and friendship, and definitely worth reading!

This is unlike any other Regency novel I have ever read. I absolute loved it. This has sadness, tragedy, danger. betrayal, kidnappings, a betrothal, a wedding, family pride, manipulation, deceit, greed, murder and a clean romance. Julia has been impersonating a man named Jules. She is an artisan and speaks out for fairness and justice. She had to go into disguise in order to support her mother and her two young sisters after her father died. One day when Jules was out talking to the crowd, a man dressed as a commoner approached her. She could see that he was not a commoner. Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton, was use to dressing as a commoner to listen and observe how to help the working class. He came across Jules talking and wanted to help in some way. He did not know Jules was a young woman. He saved Jules from being arrested. He then found out he was a she. He felt that Jules could not stay there for fear the guards would come back for her. So he arranged to keep her family safe. But he had to get the family out of London to his estate in the country. Julia agreed to his plans. Julia and her family stayed with Gregory at his townhouse. From there her mother and sisters were sent to the country. But Julia stayed behind to help find out who started the fire at the workhouse and killed many innocent children and adults. Also she wanted to help her brethren of the Guild who were arrested. Gregory had a friend who was a barrister and involved him to take up the case on behalf of the workers. But in order for Julia to stay in his home he had to set up a guise that she was his betrothed and they were to be married. In the meantime there was trouble a foot. Then the story takes a turn to danger and problems. This story is action packed. I had to read it straight through. Page after page I was totally engrossed in the story. The author did an excellent job in developing the characters. The story went at a quick pace. It took me a few hours to read. I highly recommend this book.

The Artisan and the Duke, by Abigail Agar.
This is one of the most exciting Regency novels I have ever read. It bounces from situation to situation with no letup.

The premise of the book is believable but for one thing. I have a hard time believing that the heroine could be taken for a boy, and that she is a mason by trade. But if you refuse to let that distract you the book unfolds like a mystery and steadily from crisis to crisis.

Jules (Julia) Kelley has been trained as an apprentice mason, and is a member of the Mason's Guild. Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton, is a man who though titled, has little sympathy for the aristocracy. From the minute he meets Jules rallying her compatriots against unjust aristocratic actions he is hooked. When he discovers the young man is really a young woman everything in his world begins to change.

He rescues her from the Guard following a suspicious fire in which many young child laborers burn to death. He convinces her that becoming engaged to him will help her to bring the perpetrators of the fire to justice. From that point on his family and hers become inevitably intertwined.

But that's really just the start of the story. The engagement is really a ruse to hide the fact that the duke is investigating not only the fire, but the justice system, and members of his own aristocratic family who have designs on his title.

First his brother, a survivor of the Napoleonic Wars is kidnapped. He himself is attacked. Jules, now his wife, is kidnapped and transferred from workhouse to workhouse so he is unable to find her.

The whole situation becomes so complicated that it is apparent some really powerful lords are working not only to thwart him, but to destroy his family.

I read through each set of difficulties thinking after each that his crisis was solved--until the next crisis occurred and he had to stickhandle his way through again. I thoroughly enjoyed the action, and followed the story breathlessly to its conclusion. As Regency Romances go, this one is better than most. Kudos to author Abigail Agar.

SINK THOSE CLAWS DEEP!!!
Oh my goodness gracious. This is one, over-the-top, brows drawn almost lost in the hair line. Taĺk about a spin that spurs the gossips tongue a wagging. This is one page turning, explosive bombshell that you will not be able to put down. I read straight through. The feelings are in such a tizzy you're not sure if you should run hard and fast or crawl under something to hide. The characters are intriguing and complex with a realism that doesn't go unnoticed. The two main characters were attracted to one another but tried to ignore it. When the doors finally close behind them, they realized this was just the tip of the ice burg. Things swept up in a corner, wouldn't stay hidden under the rug much longer. You have all the components to make this phenomenal read the master piece that it deserves. Action packed, fast paced, nerve racking and nailbiting all in one amazing tale. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with danger closing in. How much longer will they survive? Is the next door that opens be the last one for them. Abigail draws us deep into this world she created until nothing else exists except this adventure before us. She has a gift of bringing her imagination alive so that we, her readers enjoy the intrigue and danger with such splendor that's up close and personal. Everything appears as if it's In 3D Technicolor that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. Remarkable job Abigail, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

Julie is use to dressing and acting like a young man, being vocal on her views of the London elete. One day she meets Gregory, who likes to dress and act like he is a part of the London poor. Gregory notices right away the young man was not what he seemed. The next time they meet Gregory is preventing the young man from being arrested by the the guard who enjoys arresting the vocal poor of London. Gregory volunteers to help Julie and her family, to keep her from being arrested. When there is a fire at a factory, killing everyone inside, Gregory and Julie feel the need to investigate. Who are the people betraying Julie and Gregory?

This is a very good book. The mystery has so many twists and turns, which will keep you on the edge if your seat and holding your breath when the next twist hits. If you enjoy romantic suspense you don't want to miss this exciting novel by Abigail Agar. This is a sweet and clean book. I received an ARC from the author, and the review is my honest opinion.

My compliments for Abigail Agar. She wrote a surprising original regency romance novel. I just loved it, especially the social awareness of the main characters.
Julie has lost her dad and wants to save her family from hunger and poverty by posing as a boy, Jules. He or she is employed in the Mason Guild. She is really opposed to the way the gentry is suppressing the poor and the hardworking people of the guilds. While she is protesting against the inequality, Gregory, Duke of Thornton, discovers her. Gregory dresses down like a poor man as he wants to find out how the commoners are doing. Both discover their hidden identities and Gregory saves Julie and her mother and sisters. It's a beautiful romance and of course an ideal romance of two people who are fighting for the same goal. But they are not yet there. Well I can't tell more without spilling out the whole story. But be assured, once you start you have to continue reading. There were some grammatical mistakes and repeats, but still a lovely novel and those mistakes are not at all a problem.

Rights vs Priviledge

Gregory, Duke of Thorton, has held the the peerage needs change for some time. He goes out in disguise to check on the welfare of all society. He tries to help right wrongs but feels it is not enough.

Julia, Jules, works for the mason guild. She was taught by her father. Not many know her secret. Those that do guard it well. She meets Gregory in his disguise one day and !earns the next her suspicions were correct.

As these two work together to fight against the injustice of the guild members and find out who set the fire and why, they are met with one stumbling block after another.

This is on thrilling, adventurous read you won't wAnt to put down. With rich characters and a great plot it is an enjoyable read.

A different Regrncy

Abigail Agar writes quite unusual Regency romances. Her characters don’t fit into the mold as standard members of the peerage or commoners, and have more interests than fashion, parties, and parliament. In this book the heroine is a brick-mason, and our hero is a Duke! The puzzle they unravel has many unexpected twists, and our villain unexpected. It is also clean — no detailed sex scenes or language. The only problem there is that the book is rather light on romance. A little more romance wouldn’t hurt. I also found a couple of editing errors, but those are pretty standard with e-books. All in all — an enjoyable read.

This book was enjoyable. It is about a girl, Julia, who disguised herself as a boy to follow her father’s trade as a mason. She is responsible for her mother and 2 small sisters. She meets Gregory, who is in disguise as a commoner, to learn more about the problems of the working class. Julia and Gregory come to an agreement to help the mason guild. The plan continues and they decide to marry. Things are not always as they seem and I enjoyed all the plot twists and secondary characters. I would recommend this for those who like to read clean, historical novels.

I like historical romances and especially when the other has written them true to the timeperiod and made their research for the events and language. This lacks at times but not anything that destroys the romance.
A slightly different take on a fake betrothal regency romance. Strong heroine, who wasn’t afraid to take risks. Interesting to learn about artisans and guilds too.
A mix of sadness, tragedy, danger. betrayal, kidnappings, a betrothal, a wedding, family pride, manipulation, deceit, greed, murder and a clean romance makes this story worth the read. It is engaging and captivating.

An entertaining, clean historical romance

The Artisan and the Duke is an entertaining clean historical romance with a lot going on. The story is a quick read because it is hard to set down.

The romance is a bit too clean. I don't think the characters even kissed in the entire book. The book could use a more chemistry between the characters. The story is also a bit too complicated, and there are story threads that were left unresolved. So it is a good book, but not quite a great one.

what an amazing book

Jules is so poor and disguised as a boy when encounters the duke. It doesn’t take long until he finds out she is a female. After that he convinced her to pretend they are courting and then engaged. Their marriage was not an easy one with all the craziness of people trying to get the dukes title. Jules and her brother in law set out to help him and Fred got kidnapped. Gregory and his workers managed to rescue Fred but Jules got put in work houses. So glad they were able to get back together and end up with a baby boy. Beautiful story

Suspenseful Romance

This story has both suspense and romance to it. Jules and Gregory’s story is filled with a suspense as to who burned down a workhouse where lives were lost. In trying to find out who was responsible, Jules and Gregory find love. During all this they are able to find out who burned the building and are also able to mend family troubles. Definitely a page turner to see how this story ends.

This is a story about the upheavals of change in the class system of England but it is also much more than that. We get first hand knowledge of how the poor were treated, child labour, the House of Lords, expectations of high society and more. This book is full of suspense, kidnapping attempted murder, betrayal, wow! It’s quite the story. This book will sweep you to another place to see how others lived and struggled whether rich or poor. I highly recommend reading it.

Jules Kelly appears as a young man instead of the Julia Kelly who she really is. She is going to a meeting when Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton saves her from being arrested with the rest of the masons guild. Then makes arrangements to get them freed from prison. He falls in love with Jules and wants to marry her but the question is does she want to marry him. Then there are other trials and tribulations. To see what happens u need to read the book.

A lesson learned about a Commoner and a Royal. We often forget how our country started out with the castle system. Two different people find true love as many folks tried to break them apart including relative. There is mystery and intrigue but love concurs all

A young Duke is sick of being bombarded by young ladies wanting him to marry them.
That is until he runs across a young man in the street, only to find it's really a young woman in male attire.
Ok the electric attraction sparks, what happens next, well you need to read this dramatic episode for yourself.

Another predatory by this author. Excitement, mystery, intrigue all taking place in Regency England. Shows the disparity of the haves and have nots, and the degree one person would go to continue it. Enjoyed every exciting page.

Four stars, a good mystery, a lot of good family love...Not a lot of romance, it was a fast pace book rushing from one scene to another, if you can keep up it had an okay ending

This starts out odd, but once you get into it, it's a good story. The "artisan" in this case is Julia, pretending to be Jules, a boy trained by her father to be a stone mason. Not really a spoiler as you learn this a few pages in.

A good read

I enjoyed the storyline of the book as well as the characters. What I do not enjoy and it seems to be throughout Ms Agars books are all the spelling errors and typos. Being as beta reader for a few other authors, I cringe when I see these.
