I could go on such a big rant about how important this book is for parents or people who want to be parents!!! Airway stuff is not talked about I've known deep down for a while that we are dealing with this but have been dismissed from so many providers saying "it's fine" this book helps give some next steps and I'm thankful for that
This book should be required reading in every Pediatrics Resident's education before they graduate and move on into Pediatric practice. It will definitely be high on my recommended list for new parents. This is not to generate fear and constant checking of their infants to see if they are breathing, but as things come up and situations warrant that they will have it on hand to determine if their children fall into one of the categories covered. I wish my parents had had this book available when I was a child. I'm not certain I would have been helped by it, but I know I had troubles sleeping when young, and still at times demonstrate some of the symptoms described as an older adult. I will be bringing it up with my GP when I see her in two weeks.
Thank you for researching and writing this book. I believe you will affect lives for the better, both of children and adults.
I am an exhausted parent with a child who doesn’t not sleep through the night at 4.5 years old. What are my options? Well, I have two major ones: 1) Discipline, or 2) Look for underlying medical reasons. So often parents resort to #1, and even in Christian circles this is applauded (‘you have to just put your foot down!’). But there could be more going on… those 1 million bedtime excuses may not simply be misbehavior. Your child may have a bad relationship with sleep due to environmental factors, sleep disordered breathing or a sleep disorder. You might think, “not my kid!” Well… I thought the same thing, but thanks to our amazing pediatrician and the help of a few specialists (and this book!) we are *hopefully* now on the path to getting better sleep. Whether or not you suspect underlying issues in your child, if your child is not sleeping well, READ THIS BOOK.
As a dental hygienist who is trying to learn more about myofunctional therapy, this was a great read. It was very detailed on the list of red flags for sleep disordered breathing and various potential causes. There were also many potential solutions discussed, as well as muscle strengthening activities that could be done at home. It was very focused on children, which is helpful to me as a mother and as a clinician. The author obviously knows how to help children!
Really the only thing I wanted more from this book was what exactly a myofunctional therapist will do to help determine the root cause of the issue, and what they will do about it when they know. I knew I wouldn't get all the answers, but because of the main reason I read it, I hoped for more along those lines!
Upon seeing the title one might be inclined to lump this book into all the other “sleep help” books that aren’t truly helpful but rather inform how to train a child or disregard the help because of physiological development. But alas, you would be wrong. Moore does an exceptional job of giving concise and very practical information from parasomnias, environmental, psychological, sdb, oas, bed wetting, mold, habits and more all the way to the grand slam of oral dysfunction with how each effects sleep. Charts and questionnaires, lists of practitioners and who to help for what, websites, exercises, etc are all included in Sleep Wrecked Kids. Highly, highly recommend for all parents and any professional that works with children.
As a parent and a dental hygienist this book was incredibly enlightening. It has opened a world of knowledge and curiosity for my career that I never knew existed. I feel appalled that something so fundamental as sleep and breathing is completely looked over by health care professionals. We need to all work together to identify and create treatment plans for the now to help alleviate so many health concerns as these kids grow. Even many adults could benefit from myofunctional therapy and improving their airways. I wish this was mainstream knowledge in healthcare.
I interlibrary loaned this book. It's a lot of information! It's helpful in that it contains several checklists to aid in narrowing down specific sleep issues and pinpoint problem areas. It helps give discernment in knowing whether to pursue further help with certain sleep issues. It's a book definitely worth reading more than once, especially if you have a child who struggles with sleep issues.
Well-referenced guide to sleep issues. Our Myofacial Therapist didn't seem to have many ideas for how to help our two year old, however. She said she does the adult snoring exercises with older kids, but thought our daughter was too young.
great information presented in a style suitable for parents. Easy to understand checklists and helpful hints good balanced information including multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment
Eye opening and informative. Should be required reading for everyone planning to become a parent. I wish I had read this book before my kids were born.
