Seeing Jesus as He Really Is takes you on a journey through the Gospels and along the way, you'll see how Jesus really lived, how He radically changed the world, and how Jesus is portrayed through the word of God.
Seeing Jesus as He Really Is will help every reader know how to answer the questions that Jesus asked His disciples, "Whom do men say that I am" and "Who do you say that I am?"
Chapters include: Jesus and His Methods; The Sweet Presence of Jesus; The Name of Jesus; Called to Do the Works of Jesus; Pressing in to Jesus.
Rodney Howard-Browne is a Charismatic Christian preacher and evangelist. He is pastor of The River at Tampa Bay, a church which he and his wife founded in 1996, and heads Revival Ministries International. He was born in South Africa and has resided in Tampa, Florida, USA since the mid-1990s.
"Jesus was not a barefoot, scrawny, weakkneed individual with a lamb under His arm who spoke in Elizabethan English, "For yea, as thou hast gathered here this day." That's not Jesus, that is religion and tradition. If you read the Bible, you'll see that the reputation Jesus had among the religious people was that of a gluttonous man and a winebibber, because He hung around with the sinners, and they didn't like Jesus because He convicted them of their hard-heartedness.
On the other hand, when He was dealing with religious people - the Pharisees and Sadducees, the "wouldn't sees" and the "couldn't sees" - He was extremely blunt. In Matthew 23 He called them "a generation of vipers." He called them "blind guides" (v. 24) and "whited sepulchres... full of dead men's bones" (v.27). He said, "If you make any converts," (which He doubted) "you're gonna make them twice the devils of hell that you are" (Matthew 23:27, author's paraphrase). That's Jesus!" (Rodney Howard Browne, Seeing Jesus as He Really Is)
I was greatly affected by the author early on in my Christian walk. He taught me how to have the joy of the Lord. I watched many hours of YouTube videos of his early ministry where people would manifest the joy of the Lord. He has become a bit more political recently, but I believe is exercising his new found freedom, as before, preachers were muzzled from saying anything politically for fear that their tax status would be taken away from them. Trump has changed that now though. Preachers in the USA can more freely express their political views under a Trump administration; the oxes are no longer muzzled.
Getting back to the review; R. T. Kendall gave a foreword to this book and claimed there were 11 corrections that he had to make before he could write a foreword to this book. The reason was because he didn't want his evangelical buddies to give him a bad wrap. However, he says he just left it the way it was "and let the reader decide.." THIS READER has decided that no changes are needed. In my opinion everything is theological correct. I say this because, I felt the foreword was a way for R.T. Kendall to save face for the sake of man pleasing. And I felt his foreword brought doubts to the contents of the book. Have no doubts as you dive into this book; it is good theology and funny (which is very rare!).
One thing I like about reading Rodney Howard-Browne's books is that he weaves humor throughout. I was laughing out loud at times, as he helps the reader to see Jesus as He really is - in a non-religious way and free from leaning on the arm of the flesh. He says, "The problem is that some people are waiting for Prophet Doodad to show up; they're waiting for Evangelist Dingaling or Apostle Bucketmouth to come along. "Oh, if only he would come to our town, if only he would come and hold a crusade, it would be so wonderful." But you don't need any man; you need Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God."
I agree with the author, I think that if Jesus was to come to some of our churches today, they would kick Him out.
I'll be brief here. The brilliance of this book is that it is about the Real Jesus. Not the Jesus all have imagined or heard about; but the Jesus who we see in the Bible! Jesus is the Word so you can't even truly know Him until you begin to know the Word. Biblical and anointed, read it.
If I had to choose just one book to give as a gift for the rest of my life, it would be this one. This book brings to light what people often overlook when reading the scriptures—the true nature of Jesus. Pastor Rodney through compelling insights and scriptural references invites readers to move beyond traditional views and experience a deeper, more personal relationship with Christ. In these pages, you'll encounter a Jesus who not only is the Savior and healer but as someone who desires for us to prosper in all aspects of life. You’ll also discover His true character, which guides us to live a life of victory, from glory to glory, and from faith to faith. As you read this book, you will see the real Jesus, the One who longs for an intimate relationship with you.
“I discovered that the only way I could see and know Jesus was to read the Gospels. Then later, as I read the Gospels over and over, I started seeing a different picture of Him than I’d heard coming from the pulpit.”
“I saw that He was radical. He didn’t fit in with the religious. As a matter of fact, Jesus would be kicked out of most churches today!”
“As I studied the Gospels, I began to realize that through centuries of religion and tradition, the Church has relegated Jesus to a stained glass window. They’ve put Him in a religious picture found in children’s Bible storybooks.”
Rodney Howard-Browne's style of worship may be a little different than most, but his insights into the teachings of Jesus is a very good read.
Having written the Getting To Know Jesus Bible Study Series - a complete Bible study of every event in the life of Christ, I appreciated how Rodney took various traits and teachings from Scripture and assembled them to help the reader see the power of Christ in their life.
I found this book easy to read and apply because I am very familiar with the life of Christ and could relate/verify almost everything that is written on these pages.
You will find encouragement, empowerment and enrichment as you read through Seeing Jesus as He Really Is.
