The Dragon’s Stone is out for blood.

The powerful stone has fused with Nardus’s body. And now, he’s been captured and can’t get to Nasduron for help. Perhaps the stone won’t let him. It seems to have a mind of its own. Then again, it could be the silver collar…

His captors are taking him to Pravus. The same wizard who started him on this quest and promised him his old life back. But Nardus is desperate to break free. The Dragon’s Stone insists he kill the only man who can bring his family back to life…

Meanwhile, twins Aria and Alderan struggle to understand their awakening magical abilities. With one just a step from the throne and the other in the path of a bloodthirsty beast, their powers guide their every move. But against a master manipulator, the twins’ magic may not be enough to survive.

Once at the castle, Pravus strives to keep the prisoner Nardus a secret. But when Nardus, Alderan, and Aria discover the truth of their past, it may bury their future…

This is the second book in a three book series and like the first, "Dark Lament", it is fantastic! It has action, drama, romance, and fantasy. What more could you need. I can't wait for Daniel's next book. I loved it.

In the 2nd installment of The Dark Heart Chronicles we get to continue on the journey with Nardus & Co. We get to know some characters much more and we get introduced to a handful of new ones.

My favorite characters are easily the Gnolls and Eshtak (sic?)

There are some really interesting concepts woven together into the large-scale dark fantasy epic. The world seems vast and full of intrigue and history. There are some moments of incredible imagery, especially in the Black Citadel.

One thing the author does very well is his method of unveiling the tapestry very, very methodically. As a reader, you are always left with questions to be answered and mysteries to be unraveled. You will get your answers, but you will need to be patient. It keeps you turning the pages.

The story does have some strong spiritual themes but it is indeed dark fantasy, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Continues right where book 1 left off. You get to meet some new characters and follow the stories of your favorite ones from the first book. This book has action, adventure, love, sorrow, treachery and much more. Really looking forward to book 3.

Reading Reborn felt like being thrown into the middle of a conversation that you know nothing about. Kuhnley shifts between perspectives and scenarios, bouncing from Nardus, to Aria, to Alderan, and if you don’t have all the threads on hand, you’re left drowning at sea. So maybe I would have liked it better if I’d started with the first book. Ha.

Still, once you get into it, Reborn is quite a good read. It follows the classic hero arc—because of some prophecy, one youth is the only one who can save the world—but it’s also dark fantasy, so it’s not as hopeful and happy-clappy as some of the others. There's quite a bit of sexual stuff in here, so it’s definitely not one for younger teens, despite the age of the main protagonists. I suppose it’s in that vague new category called NA instead of YA.

A huge part of this book is also a mystery about one of the characters and, honestly, that annoyed me to no end. Which is maybe part of the reason I didn’t like it as much as I could have. I do hope, however, that it has relevance in the further books, if not, what the heck was that about?

What a story. Nardus has given up everything to bring back his family, but he’s given an order. This is something he can’t do. Ready for the next. Hopefully the stories never end.

Nardus has retrieved the Stone of the Dead which is fused with his body. The decision that assaults Nardus now is what should he do with the stone? Before, only his family and bringing them back were the only thoughts in his head. Now, knowing the power of the stone, he questions whether or not he should give the stone to the mage. His last thought in the prior volume was, “What have I done?” Nardus remains consumed with internal issues. Twins Aria and Alderan deal with separate issues. Aria drops out of sight, mesmerized by Lord Rosai. Alderan is avoiding a beastly Rocksar while looking for Aria in his spare time. Temporarily distracted from Alderan, Rocksar and crew are hunting Murtog to repay his kindness. Much is going on in this second volume; many sub-plots, many characters, almost too much to keep track of. Quite complex! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
