Perfectionism can have serious consequences, both mentally and physically. But there is a solution—and it can be found in the pages The Perfectionism Workbook.
There are more than a dozen reasons why I will highly recommend this book, but before that, it's necessary to make it clear that from the title this book may seem like it may promise to make its reader perfectionist in all aspects; instead, this book does exactly opposite of that. The author Taylor Newendorp himself already convinced and admitted in this book that perfectionism is unattainable and all the trials and work to obtain it can lead to nothing but a person's disappointments and failures.
This book gave me insights into how many of us are trying too hard to get perfect in everything and trying to avoid mistakes and setbacks at all costs. Even the author explained how our tendency to become perfectionists can cause many mental and psychosocial problems in our life.
This book discusses all aspects that drive people's behavior when their perfectionist tendencies get toxic and start affecting their productivity, interpersonal relations, world views, and develop low self-esteem.
The best part about this workbook is that it does not just talk problems but it offers relevant practical exercises right after that particular problem.
It helps its reader to understand everything about perfectionism that the reader needs to know and with that, it shows the mirror of reality how many people beat themselves up because of their incapability to do everything perfectly.
The major takeaways from this book are the concepts, ideas, and exercises where the author Taylor Newendorp describes the importance of feelings, emotions, beliefs, and thoughts in the toxic effects of perfectionism and how they can cause cognitive distortions.
Reading this book is more like a self-evaluation process where the author first motivates the reader to identify flaws in his behavior and beliefs, and then through reflecting exercises, helps the reader to reform healthy behavior and beliefs.
This is one of those books I will always be grateful to read and recommend it for the impact it can cause on its reader's life! This will surely help you to make peace with your flaws and imperfection.❤️
This book is great! As a perfectionist myself, things are challenging. This book walked through different steps and had actual activities and quizzes and thought provoking questions and lesson plans. This is a great companion for someone who wants to overcome their obsession with perfection. Or at least try to work with it more. I'm still working on mine. And it will always be a work in progress. But this work book has great information, tips and ideas and ways to look beyond the immediate focus and at the big picture and helps you work through it at your own pace. Its subjective but also comforting and not biased. Very well written and useful. I was given a copy through the Callisto Publisher's Club but the opinions here are my own.
The Perfectionism Workbook was really helpful when I was going through a tough time. The book discusses what perfectionism is (as well as the different types of perfectionism) and provides strategies to work through it.
I liked that there were different exercises for the various types of perfectionism. I skipped the exercises that weren't necessarily relevant to me and worked through the ones that spoke to me in the moment. I might go back and work through some of the exercises again if I feel my perfectionism creeping in. Some of the exercises involved meditation and self-reflection rather than working through a tangible problem, which were also useful.
I highly recommend this book if you are like me: self-critical, a people pleaser, procrastinator, scared of judgement etc.
Great book. I've recently realised that perfectionism was making me struggle with life for years. This book has helped me to name things in the right way and to recognize what fear it all is based on.
Recommended for those who struggle with perfectionism, self doubt, criticism, judging, multitasking and general mismanagement of life due to self-set high standards and problems to achieve perfection in life.
I've always known I'm a perfectionist in a bad way that I cannot function and always feel stuck. Many books have helped, but this book specifically hits home because almost all the examples are spot on and very relatable to me. Some are not because there are different behaviors of perfectionist. And what I love most about this book is how it is very helpful in getting me to step out of the negative mindsets about myself through exercises that made me think really really hard. It's as if I have my own therapist. Finishing this book doesn't mean someone will be done being a perfectionist because it is an ongoing process, and this book through its exercises has helped to prepare us for that process.
When I saw this book I knew just the title I had to have it. I am an artist and an author so perfectionism has a tendency to get in my way and keep me from being as productive as I would like to be. This book was an eye opener. It was like the author knew me personally, which was awesome and scary at the same time since we have never met. I mean how could so many things in one book describe me so perfectly. I am slowly making my way through the book. If you are like me and perfectionism gets in your way then this is the book for you.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided to me by the publisher.
Nobody's perfect and yet perfectionistic people still exist. More than anybody else, they're prone to "failure" because of their unrealistic standards. And that's is something they have in common with ordinary people— we fear failure.
This book offers practical tips and exercises that can help us to reframe our mind about fear of failures/mistakes, procrastination, and self-worth.
Reading it is just like having a conversation during a normal day. No very scientific terms nor a boring classroom type discussion. It is like reading a letter from a friend who knows your tendencies and what to do about it. That is how easy to read this book.
I have issues with procrastination and trying to be perfect, and I really like how this book dives into why we think this way. The author gives tips and tricks to change our perspective so we really can achieve our goals and start to move forward. Being perfect really is a lot of pressure, and that can cause us to start thinking negatively about ourselves. The author is practical. He doesn't ask you to do anything unreasonable. And although small tasks, they're effective. I enjoyed this book!!
Some good ideas in there but it's already been said and done. Not a fan of all of the questions and numbers.
I don't think the examples are good enough.
Exercises weren't good either. I think there are other books out there that might be better suited for me.
I think if this is the first time you're expose to CBT, then it can be beneficial but since I'm reading Feeling Good by David D. Burns. I think his book is better.
So i have learn't that I am not a perfectionist! There is some great exercises which are CBT/mindfulness or growth v fixed mindset which would be of benefit to most people, and some of the perfectionist issues apply to other people too. So there is still a lot to get out of this workbook if it turns out you are not striving for perfection.
This is one of the best workbooks for perfectionism. It deals with each issue and type, broken down. If you follow it, you are forced to be honest with yourself.
I went into it not expecting to learn what I did about myself and those around me in my Pride. Well worth the time to read and work through!
Keeping in mind that this is just a standard self-help book, I think it is a good one. I didn't fall in love with the book, nor I think it will solve all your problems related with perfectionism, but it can help you a little. Overall, it has two or three good ideas that could be interesting for you if you consider yourself a perfectionist person.
Very good workbook on overcoming perfectionism. A good number of the exercises weren’t helpful for me, but some were and it has good insights/tips on cognitive distortions, self-compassion, self-talk...a lot of ways I didn’t realize I was being perfectionistic.
This has a lot of handy exercises, first-hand experiences with perfectionism, and explanations for where some perfectionist tendencies stem from. I particularly like how the author broke down the different types of perfectionism and how they can manifest.
A pretty standard mental health workbook. I did appreciate that it went into different types of perfectionism. I honestly don't think you need to be a perfectionist to benefit from a lot of this -- it's really just about how you view yourself and stuff.
