Exploring New Earth should be a thrilling undertaking. Instead, the more the colonists learn about the planet, the more alarmed they become. Alien ruins hint at a species who fought great wars among themselves and disappeared centuries ago. When Connor Gates discovers a hidden bunker, he finds something he never expected. Everything the colonists have learned about New Earth’s previous inhabitants is wrong. Connor must race to unravel the mystery. The colonists must face the possibility that they are not alone and that New Earth was never theirs for the taking. Discovery is the fifth book in the First Colony military space opera series.

Better than Sanctuary by a good bit. Connor returned to form, for the most part, and Lenora and Dash were not "onscreen" too often. This story had a bit more adventure and took Connor, especially, to the brink. Well done.

The book is practically over in the first 3 quarters of the pages. The last quarter of this book is a setup for the next book, which is not written yet. I don't mind a plot twist at the end to setup another book, but this was just wasteful. Of the five book's in this series I've read so far, this was the worst.

A much more enjoyable read than the last book.

This story takes place a year after the last book and finds the colony in a period of peace.

Gone are the unlikable characters and a Conor who was led around by his... This time we have a strong cast of main characters and a compelling plot.

I was happy to see the characters whom were dealing with Ptsd where doing so in a more believable way, and the subject was dealt with in a more mature way than the last book.

My biggest problem with this book, other than the unfailing hero, is the plot length. The plot was mostly over, after being extended as far as the author could stretch it, and then the book didn't end. There was a whole aftermath to deal with, which was done much longer than it should have.

However, still very enjoyable and rekindled my interest in the series.

I'm very much enjoying this series. There is some good character development and a lot of action (which I like). The books are well written and I can get through them rather quickly and not get bored of what I'm reading. I would definitely recommend these to anyone who likes science fiction.

We are not alone

This novel is a real short but fast paced story. Connor has become more involved at Sanctuary since assuming the role of Mayor. He also developed a program to help the CFS personnel find a way to effectively deal with their PTOS from their service during the Vemus attack. He has arranged for a special exploration camping trip to check out a NEIIS site for Dash who is now in charge of his own department. The site was just located on the NEIIS map but appears to be a site with a non-functIoning consoles, but when Connor arrived at the site he noticed good different was the geography which appeared to have sustained heavy attack which destroyed the buildings. As the group spreads out to check the area they find a hidden bunker underneath a small hill. The door couldn't be opened but Connor finds a way in through the roof and enters bringing Noah and two others with him, leaving the rest to guard the outside. What they find is an old bunker with a room full of stasis is but only one is undamaged. While trying to access the console, they activated the one pod to power open by because of the damage to the bunker the cover doesn't open properly and they have to help the NEIIS individual get out of the pod. After he gets his bearings, he sees all the damaged pods and starts reacting by screaming and then running through the bunker. Connor and Noah follow the NEIIS but send the other two to inform the rest of the group. Rhyars climbed into the bunker after the console activity alerted but the NEIIS has a vocal ability to cause them to withdraw. He leads Connor and Noah out of the bunker via an escape tunnel that he accessed the door to enter. They established a small method of communication with him and he gestures for them to follow to another
location. To access this new site, they have to climb a mountain where they find vehicles and working console, which they access to find another site over in an area near a big body of water that has a more tropical weather zone. The NEIIS wants to go there immediately but Connor trys to stall is he can get back-up help but the NEIIS knocks him out and kidnaps him and flies out using one of gliders. After sending coordInates to Sierra, the group follows with the rovers. Connor has been taken to what appears to be a military base, where the NEIIS leaves him outside of a building to cross over to another by bypassing the animals guarding the section. Once inside Connor has to battle with the NEIIS for his PDA, which gets damaged from the struggle, but because of all the console Connor can send a signal if he can get away. When he does, he also explored the building and found a room filled with thousands of stasis pods and the NEIIS activating a bunch of them. When the group reaches his location and is able to communicate with him, a plan is devIsed to both rescue Connor and destroy the power score to stop full activation of all those pods, based on the hyper- aggressive behavior against others by the NEIIS. When they return home to Sierra, Connor is treated for hIs injuries and when he has healed enough is called to a "informal" meeting to discuss the events that occurred with the NEIIS and the group actions. He was told that a committee was being formed to discuss protocol for future situations and he was politely told to go back to Sanctuary since he was the Mayor there. But he has decided to develop his own protocol setup too.

Once again, I seemed to have gotten a very short book. It seemed like I just started reading it the other night and then last night I finished it. It was very exciting, but I don’t think that’s why I read it so quickly.

Our main character, Connor Gates, now Mayor of Sanctuary, has to get away from his position and the city for awhile. He’s never been the “behind the desk” type of guy, so it’s no wonder that he’s planned this little outing into the wilds of New Earth. “Little” is kind of a misnomer since Conner had requisitioned two brand new N-Class Rovers and they were already packed for what appeared to be an extended camping trip. The other members of the camping group were now showing up and it was going to be quite a group Altogether, including Connor, there would be nine campers.

Some of the group were questionable as to why they were included. John Rollins was one in particular. A lot of Colony Defense Forces (CDF) took R&R in Sanctuary just to get their heads clear and rest up. Some had pretty back cases of PTSD and Connor thought this little camping trip would give them a chance to unwind far from everything and anything. John was pretty much mad at everything and every body. He had a pretty unfriendly attitude, but Connor was willing to work with him to get him back to normal. Anna Gray was another camper with issues (PTSD) that had drawn her into an almost extreme introvert. While she was smart, she was also scared of everything. Her experience during the Vemus War where she was trapped behind enemy line for days was causing her to react as she was now. Again, Connor thought getting her out and away from everyone and having her do something different might ease her fears.

Well, Connor’s intentions were good, but they didn’t work out so well. He got a satellite relay call from Dash, another of his research friends who asked him to go explore a satellite imaged location not far from where they were going. Of course Connor agreed since he and Lenora, his wife, were actively involved in the archeology of New Earth. Dash thought this might be a new NEIIS (New Earth Indigenous Intelligent Species) site. While most of the known sites contained very little about the original inhabitants of New Earth, little by little they were piecing together a better history. And, on a rare occasion, some of the NEIIS technology still worked, barely, but it worked when a new power source was applied. That in it self was amazing since it was thought the NEIIS had died out almost two-hundred years before.

So, off the party goes to check out this new site. Little do they know that some of them won’t be coming back and that they’re about to discover something truly remarkable about the NEIIS. No matter where you go on New Earth, especially outside the cities, you are armed. There are several indigenous species that are very dangerous to humans. The camping party will soon find out that they didn’t bring an adequate amount of weapons or ammo to face the problems that are coming to them. A call for help is required, but will it reach them in time. Read the book to find out.

Lastly, the author does mention there will be a 6th book. There’s still a lot of undiscovered territory on New Earth and the long dead NEIIS may not be so dead after all!

The fifth book of the series is an interesting mix between Indiana Jones and Enemy Mine.

This story tones it back with only having a couple third person limited points of view to follow. It continues the trend of exploring New Earth as well as trying to figure out the history of the aliens who previously resided there and who may still be there. the book also continues the trend of having a quickly paste short or rather short story better said. It should be an easy day read for most people. Given the fast pace the author has produced the books as well as other works it is surprisingly free of editing errors. However I do think there is some confusion as to the time passage between the first book and this one. It states 12 years has passed but given the links in the previous books that was said I think it's a couple years shorter than that. There was also in the first chapter a couple point of view eras where we were reading from Connors third person perspective but sorta got a little bit of Noah's perspective in a brief paragraph. Nothing to really take away from the story.

it received a 5-star rating this time because nothing actually pulled me out of the store and once I accept the story for what it is in writing style in jonra it is nicely written. It is a short science fiction that comes from military science fiction I feel that the story stays faithful to its roots while giving an interesting view into a short couple day time span most of the events take place.

I am a little bit weary of a bit of retread in which the new leaders of the government are once again up to a bit of no good. In the previous books having the stubborn and difficult leaders of the civilian government being opposed to our military hero was akin to having the interfering adult that a children's protagonist has to get around. Though it does hint at more intrigued to come and that would spicing up the story and it does feel a bit repetitive and being a roadblock for the good guys to get by. Still I think the author can make it turn out fairly decent.

There is some complex issues our hero Connor has to face that makes the story stand apart from the others. I believe that despite the short length of the story it is impactful. It is not meant to be a saga but rather a short blind into the lives of those characters we have enjoyed through the first four books. I would not mind actually seen some longer stories set within this world to make it feel more complex and get to the meat of a story. It does feel to me as if the author had wanted to write a trilogy and had laid the foundations for future stories within the world if the series became popular. It looks like he has many irons in the fire and it's spitting out stories at a rapid pace.

It does not get too graphic or violent and the language is tame. It's not the action packed dangerous adventure that books two and three were but rather a down-to-earth story with lasting consequences.

Can't We All Just Get Along?

It doesn't appear that we can get along! Pilgrims came to America to escape persecution, they set up their own legal system, different colonies are formed but they can't get along with England, then we fight amongst ourselves in a Civil War Between the States. Now we have internal political strife, not to mention pressure from other countries. Imagine what we could accomplish if we all could get along instead of trying to take from somebody else or force them to do things our way. So, in Discovery, colonists travel to a new country only to find the first thing they meet is to fight an invading enemy, then they forget about the fighting thinking they are all done, only to find the indigenous species don't like them there. So, they fight. Then we find that the colonists themselves are fighting for power and not getting along. Can't we all just get along? Nope!

Well, I like it better than the last one! In a lot of ways, this book seemed to get back to what works with the series--characters we know and care about, less POV switches, more fast-paced action, and a decent lead-in to the next one.

It was, perhaps, the most anticlimactic "first contact," I've ever seen, and it did start to drag for me at the end, but I think that's because Lozito clearly seems to be setting up some big reveal for the rest of the series.

I already have the next two books on Audible, so I do plan to read them, but I think I need a little mental break from this series first. While it's a fast, easy read, it does tend to get repetitive.

Great Storytelling!

Ken Lozito has an almost Clancy like talent. Some of my favorite things about the late Tom Clancy ,
. The ability to hold numerous story threads and draw them simultaneously together into the spell binding conclusion of a story plot.
. The complete emotional fleshing out of his characters.
. The attention paid to the emotion of a story and the relationships of his characters.
. The ability to make me sad that a book has ended and excitedly look forward to the next.
Can't wait to see what happens in six!😎😁

Ever wonder where all the inhabits of New Earth went. In Discovery we find out about some. Connor stumbles unto a hidden bunker and he awakens someone he has rather leave a sleep. The tension and danger ramp up from there. This fleshes out the direction of this new trilogy. Connor is not the only one to make discovered that will change the colony and we catch a glimpse of some new opposition. This keeps the danger and tension going. No audio book yet so I read instead of listens.

A short but fun book. This continues the adventures of some of the "First Colony" crew. It continues the larger story arc of the series but could realistically stand on its own. If one did choose to read this first, some parts might be a bit confusing but the larger story is clear enough to enjoy.

There wasn't a huge amount of character development, but it was character driven enough to avoid being a travelogue.

Finally

Another great instalment, and finally, finally we get to meet the NEIIS, which doesn't turn out well. Interestingly, they're not what was speculated in earlier books due to the lack if staircases.

What will the next instalment bring? Find and wake up some more amenable NEIIS and all live happily ever after? Too obvious methinks, so don't keep me waiting too long please Ken.

Best of the five books, so far!

Books 1-3 were a little formulaic, but book 4 showed a lot of the author’s growth. Smoother prose, and it was easier to slip into the story.

Book 5, however was a really good read. The author slipped into a groove and told a story adroitly, and with no sense of strain. Nothing jarred me out of the “willing suspension of dis-belief

And he introduced smart suits! Hooray!

Waiting eagerly for book six to continue the story.

More Great Writing and Characterization

I don't much care for series but I've enjoyed THIS one completely. The author writes so well that you are THERE. You see and live what the characters are seeing and living. The people are real. The stories exciting. I believe the author could write about any subject and it would be entertaining. I'm definitely moving on to the next book. My FRIENDS are waiting!

Just keeps getting better

This series is getting better and better. The action doesn't stop for long. I'm getting so caught up in them, I've done nothing all day except read. I'm hooked on exploring this new world and the people who are doing the exploring. Now we know there were people (?) Who used to live here. Now I have to start the next book in the series and see what trouble they can get into this time.

Well paced book that keeps you going

SPOILER ALERT

What really annoys me about this book is that the newly discovered alien acts like Connor did after coming out of hibernation and does his best to revive his friends. Still the fate of the aliens is genocide for a few counts of animal abuse and one count of petty larceny.

Hopefully the author pulls more of the aliens out of hibernation and takes the time to prepare an actual first contact scenario in a later installment.

As the action returns to terra firma, we get a gritty colonial adventure with a dash of 'Predator'-like alien. It's a great standalone story and one of the stronger entries in a series that seems to struggle to decide its genre. That can be a good thing when it feels more deliberate but at times it's felt more whimsical.

The alien in question is less interesting than the many new mysteries that are unleashed - and that promise interesting reveals to come.

The First Colony continues to find surprises on New Earth. Now after a Satellite locates an interesting location. The NEIIS and their installations are always good for exploring but this one is different it is a Bunker. Hardened and quite intact. What they discover is Capsules with NEIIS inside. When they bring one out of Stasis, Connor feels he must first try First Contact. Which leads to a long chase.

Lots of fun on this one. I will be getting back into the Series.

I've been so enjoying this series. But the plot on this one was tragically boring. It was to much cat and mouse and cat and mouse and cat and mouse.............. whew! It finally brushed a point and a solution that I hope to see revealed an better "tempoed"
I digress because of course I plan to give his next in series a solid look! Let us hope it is entertaining! Good luck to Ken Lozito book 6.

Genocidal colonialist

This was the worst book in this series to date. After invading another planet these murderers proceed to wipe out the remnants of the original inhabitants for their own selfish reasons. Reminds me of how the white immigrants to North America killed off the native Americans and praised themselves for doing inexcusable acts of evil to other human beings.

Why did the ancients go into stasis?

I like the multiple threads.not too many and not too few. A new threat from an awakened alien or not. Are there more. Yes. Are they friendly? Hard to decide from a plethora of actions and language. Again, creative impossible situations. Very enjoyable!!!

Just when you thought the Vemus were the biggest problem

We still have our familiar cast of characters, with Dash now a more responsible person that is less likely to rush into trouble.
Without planning to they wind up learning much more about the NEIIS society when they come across a functional NEIIS bunker.

More questions than answers

As I get further into this storyline, I find myself rushing to get through the book to see where the story goes next. It started pretty slowly, although I understand that the characters and storyline had to be put in place, it has now become addicting. I finish one and immediately rush into the next.

Great story!

Once again, another planet side based plot line. I know it's because the wars are over and the focus is on rebuilding the colony and exploring the ruins, but still. It's not that interesting to me. This book is dealing with finding hostile military NEIIS stasis pods. I know later books will delve back into space so I'll just have to be patient.

Great story

As it should the fifth book left me curious as to the direction of the sixth book. I envision the earth2 natives might have been more advance than first thought. The building on sagan could have be teleported there.
