Rune and her people have been taken under the mysterious wing of the Annex, an agency that works toward Other equality.
But with the new regime comes changes and some monstrous enemies the Annex seems to have brought with it.
The crew finds themselves up against a group called the Shop, whose leader cares only about his lab and the monsters he creates there.
But he hasn't been able to build monsters he can use or sell...until now.
Now Rune must follow a path of horror that leads from a little werefox named Megan to a town full of evil in Reverence, Kentucky, and find a way to defeat something worse than blades or guns or bombs.
Magic.
She can't use her claws on magic.
Can she?
In book five of the Rune Alexander series, Rune must deal with not only the monsters, but the escalating tension between the berserker and Owen, flashbacks from the COS attack, and the fear that she's losing Levi to the chasm of darkness started by Karin Love and deepened by the slayers.
She and her crew will fight with everything they've got to defeat the evil, even if some of that darkness lives inside each one of them.
Because they're Shiv Crew, and that is what they do.
Laken was first published in 2008. After a few exciting years with her publishers, she struck out on her own to write the now complete Rune Alexander series, and never looked back.
She shares her Ohio home with three spoiled dogs, two fish, and a tenacious African Violet. She drinks too much coffee and continues burning up the keys of her trusty laptop, getting the stories out of her head and into her readers' hands.
This series has grown on me it has its.problems but the words flow on the.page and you're invested in the story and characters before you know.it. But...........and its.a bit but Rune and the crew run from one disaster to another constantly, there is never any downtime and what the fight and what is done to them is pretty horiffic. The action scenes are very overblown, too many enemies too much injury being done.to.character but they are always able to walk away at the end (don't even need doctors mainly) and their endurance is.phenomenal, rights are quick things but not in Rune Alexander's world. Two characters are getting into it she is told to leave and let them right it out she does running all.the way to see Gunner the Ghoul.at the.cemetery then she runs all the way back and the two are still fighting and continue to.do.so.some.considerable time. It suspends your disbeief. Then there is the overall.violence, Shiv Crew now work for the Agency and at one point there is a standoff between the Crew and Agency enforcers Shiv Crew kill a great many of the enforcers they don't even try to just wound them....................this is supposed to be a force for good an offshoot of the police who Rune and the Crew just mow.down their punishment ................there is none. They go back he's day and all.is.forgiven and forgotten.............. Again unbelievable.................
Just when you thought the series couldn't get any darker....this is the darkest one yet. Soul-wrenching stuff. I'm intrigued by the assassin, still curious what's going on with Owen's history, wondering what Eugene is really up to, fascinated by Lex, still crushing on Strad, but worried about the twins after that climax....and Bill. We only get to see a very tiny glimpse of the new master vampire and none of the regular wolves, but hopefully the townsfolk show their familiar fangs again soon.
This is once again a non stop action packed thriller with a little bit more on the romance side this time.
On this sequel, a high funded group called Annex has absorbed Shiv Crew and it's management, who's desire is to create Other equality… And with Annex comes bigger enemies, which are: the Next, who is composed of Others and who does not believe that the Others should be equal to humans.. and then there’s the Shop, who doesn't care who wins the war be it the Others or humans, they just want to build monsters and they have magic.
The Shiv Crew’s enemies are never ending and it only keeps getting worst… So now we got the Next and the Shop, and there is still that assassin who is trying to kill Rune… Add to that, Levi is not getting better…. then there's Owen who keeps pursuing Rune which does not bode well with the Berserker of course.
There is all this and whole a lot more going on in this book that sometimes it could be a bit overwhelming. But, I love how it came together in the end. Though, not all of it, but most of it. The climatic ending was not so much as a huge action scene but a shocker nonetheless. And though I knew that it somehow always ends up with Rune getting all mutilated, I just never knew what happens next.
Once again, I enjoyed all the action and surprises… and the romance, as Rune and Berserker’s feelings are getting more intense, I say it’s about time…
What I didn’t quite appreciate was, well for one, the run around of who Owen is… and I’m glad Berserker finally kicked Owen's ass and I thought that was it, seriously, but I guess not! I also didn’t like how Rune seems to be almost always easily fooled… Last time with the bird, now with Epik. I mean, how stupid… he pushed her on the well and on their next encounter she bought whatever he says again! Nope, not good. Oh, and enemies got away… why am I not surprise? Hmmm….
Anyways… despite all that frustrations, I still very much enjoy this series and I am looking forward to the next book!
Rune Alexander is a bad ass. She's real, complicated, & totally fucked up... just like all of shiv crew. Much more depth and mystery is given to most of our main people and favorite micro-characters. There is not a lot of world building, but some craaaazy shit happens. Lots of foreshadowing... enemies, plot twists, excitement.
With both Shiv Crew and RISC now under the direction of the Annex, things are changing for Rune and her Crew. The Annex is known to be a shadowy group and it's unclear whether or not they are out for the same purposes as both SCRU and RISC were. Luckily, Elizabeth and Bill, aka "Mom and Dad", are still around, although not quite in the same capacity as before. With new management comes new positions and Rune now reports to Eugene. Eugene is as shifty as the Annex, making things a whole lot tougher for Rune.
Rune and crew have a whole lot on their plate in this installment. Not only are they battling two new, bad groups - Next and Shop, but the Church of Slayers is still around. Still reeling from the events of their last encounter with COS, Rune and Levi are doing the best they can. Still haunted, still afraid, it's slow going for them both. One of the groups has ties to COS and what that group is doing is quite horrific to everyone involved, especially the shifters being kidnapped for the experiments. Although Rune and Levi survived the slayers, they unfortunately learn that their time with the slayers is far from over.
Back when Rune started to finally embrace her Otherness, it seemed that she sort of disconnected with her human side. I was really glad to see in New Regime that Rune has gained a bit of her humanity back. That's not to say she's getting soft. She's still tough, she's still an immortal but now she's all of those things, just with more feelings. I like the Rune with feelings and I'm really liking her relationship with the Berserker. It seems as if they are finally, finally understanding one another more and that's working quite well. Not working so well for Owen, but that's to be expected.
This installment didn't reveal everyone's secrets, some of which I'm dying to know,(Ahem, Owen...Will...Bill...), but it did shed a bit more light on certain characters. I'm anxious to see in future installments where exactly Will fits in because again, accidentally, Rune has addicted yet another person to her blood. She's not going to have much time for Shiv Crew if she has to keep biting all these people, that's for sure :)
This series continues to get better and better (and creepier, as this installment proved). If you haven't started this series yet, what are you waiting for? I definitely recommend the entire series for those who like the darker, dirtier side of Urban Fantasy. Laken Cane definitely delivers dark and dirty in spades, but she's got a bright spot amidst the darkness with Shiv Crew and their friendship and loyalty to one another.
I would also like to thank Laken Cane for the dedication. It's so awesome for authors to recognize their fans and now I can say, "Look, Ma! I made it!" :) Go ahead, check me out. That "Meigan" is yours truly :)
Oh My God! I was addicted to the Rune Alexander series after the first page of Shiv Crew. But this, book 5 in the series, takes you to a whole new place. I was wishing to get my hands on this book. Be careful what you wish for. The brilliance that is this series blows my mind. I love this book! Laken Cane does what no other author dares to do. She makes no character safe. Main characters can die. Bad things can consume anyone. That takes guts, and Laken has that in spades. I have never feared reading a book. That is no longer true. This amazing read will blow your mind. This book should come with a warning. Everything can and will happen, whether you are ready or not! In this book, the hell just keeps getting worse. Shiv Crew is now a part of the Annex, a group lead by Eugene Parish and his second, Iris. Rune doesn't like them or the secrecy they have. She feels less significant than when they were with RISC. Bill and Elizabeth are still her bosses, but the new building doesn't feel like home. They have two new threats. The Next, lead by Lee Crane, is made up of Others who do not want equality like the Annex does. But a bigger threat, the Shop, run by Orson Blackthorne, is the devil incarnate. They do not care about humans or Others. They just want to make monsters. And no one seems to be able to stop them. While searching for a girl named Megan, who started out as a missing Other and quickly morphs into the crux of this book, Rune and her team will be pushed to the limits or their sanity. And not everyone survives. Or do they? There are so many layers to this story, the horrors from Obsidian Wings, to Gunnar the Ghoul, to Owen and Strad, to Karin Love, you HAVE to read this book to believe it. Even the ever, and eternally good guy Ellis is not spared from darkness. This book completely blew my mind. I am not sure where Laken Cane finds her inspiration, but she is the Goddess of amazing tales. Thankfully, there is no way this can be the end of the series, and I find hope in that. If I could rate this book higher than five stars, I would do it in a heartbeat. If you love paranormal books, this series is hands down the best of the best. I am honored to have gotten an early look at it, and at the same time, fearing the withdrawl. This book is one that will haunt me for some time. Grab a stiff drink, your fortitude, and a healthy respect for fear and dive in, you will be on an incredible journey through the brilliant mind that is Laken Cane. Be prepared to be blown away!
This is such an amazing series and here a few reasons why:
LEX- She's one hell of a demon. She does have "mommy issues", but I'm sure she will overcome them with the help of her new family, The Shiv Crew,
Denim and Levi- The twins are a perfect fighting machine. They had some issues with Lex's mother as well, but the three of them managed to escape and find Rune. They were kidnapped and had to endure torture that ultimately built a closer bond with Rune.
Owen Five- Who is this cowboy?? I know two things for sure about Owen. First he has his sights set on Rune and nothing is going to change his mind. Two he can take a punch!
Raze and Jack are Rune's giants and they have been with her since book one! They are as loving and caring as they are deadly!
The Berserker- He has an overwhelming need to protect Rune. He's addicted to her in more ways than one!
Ellis- He's the heart of the crew. He was there for Rune to keep her secrets when she needed him to. Neither of them can image life without the other. He has some hurdles to overcome, but he will never leave her side.
Gunner- Has to be one of if not my favorite character in the series. Not an official member of the Shiv Crew, but no less important. He gives Rune information on the others. Of course it will cost her. Luckily he's addicted to Baby Ruth's! I just love his greeting for Rune. Gunner has stolen my heart!
Rune- Our leader! Rune has changed since book one. All in good ways. She now asks her crew for help and grateful to have them. With half the crew addicted to her she understand how important it is for her to live. Some in the book see Rune as being soft. I see her as finally accepting happiness and love with the family she has created! Acceptance for who and what she is.
She is the monster and the monster is her.
There are also many minor characters that I sense will be playing a bigger role in upcoming books. These characters I mentioned are the reason I continue to follow the series. In order to get the full appreciation of the series you need to start at the beginning. Are you addicted to the Shiv Crew yet? You will be!
Because that's what they do They are the Shiv Crew
Just when I think this series can't get any better.....Boom....next book comes out and it's better than the last though I am not sure how that can happen. I have several favorite series but the Rune Alexander series has blown them all away and has become my absolute favorite. This series is not for everyone.....if you are looking for a HEA....or light reading, this series is not for you. This series is a dark urban fantasy/horror that will rock your world and leave you gasping for breath while begging for more. I know, I ask the talented Laken Cane constantly, "Is it done yet"?....even the day after New Regime came out....or was it the day....hmmm... Read the other reviews to get an idea on the storyline because I hate repeating but I will say this, this is a love story...oh not one light readers are used to but one that shows that even broken and at times self loathing, Rune Alexander loves her Shiv Crew and they love her and each and every one of them would give their life for the other...if that is not love? What is...monster or not!
Wow. What else is there to say? Laken Cane blew me away yet again! I've been anxiously waiting for the fifth installment of the Rune Alexander series and this one certainly did not disappoint.
Rune and the Shiv Crew are back after tons of terror and heartbreak, they come back better than ever. There's still a gaping hole where one of the Crew should be and lots of tension between the rest.
This book is chock full of Karin Love and the COS, plus some new groups (one of the groups makes COS look like saints). Along with some new shifters, some new magic, and a new employer, Shiv Crew has their hands full.
An Other, Megan Smith, is kidnapped and the Crew has to find her and figure out who kidnapped her and why. Rune isn't sure if her new employer, the Annex, is with her or against her. The secrecy gets to Rune and she's not sure who to trust.
This book was amazing, the action never stopped. I couldn't put it down, but at the same time, I was terrified it was going to end! I cannot wait for the sixth book!
If you have followed any of my reviews it takes a lot to get more than three stars out of me. A lot. I am stingy that way. First off I absolutely love Laken Cane and Shiv Crew. I love the world she has made and Rune is one of my all time favorite heroines. She is flawed, loyal and even with being a "monster" she doesn't waver in her moral ethics, even when it would be a whole lot easier to do otherwise. She fights for what she believes is right and gives it 110%. In New Regime, Rune has a new boss that she is not sure is looking out for her and her crew's best interest. We are introduced to new bad guys that are evil to their core. Rune and Levi are still dealing with the aftermath of being tortured. Shifter girls are missing. The assassin is still after Rune. Gunnar is missing. Add in Zombies, non-stop action and well executed fight scenes you have one helluva book. Which is what I have come to expect from Laken Cane. Oh yeah, and the... No wait, you should read it and find out you won't be disappointed.
I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
Laken Cane does it again in this action packed installment of her Rune Alexander series. Laken has created a world that sucks you and and holds you there till the very end. Even in the end you don't want it to stop. The latest book is deals with two new threats and an old one. Friends and Others go missing. Rune and her Crew need to sort through all of the information and stories on both the "good" and "evil" sides and figure out what is going on. This is the darkest of the books in the series but it is so well written and honestly wouldn't be as good if it wasn't as dark. There is very little down time in this one, it has you turning pages eager to find out what happens next.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series and I give it a 5 out of 5 fangs. While you could read and enjoy this book as a standalone I also recommend you get the first 4 books, you will not be disappointed.
I'm at a loss for words to describe how amazing I found this book. I loved the other four books equally, this one however is my favourite Rune Alexander book by far. It is written to perfection and has everything we've all come to crave from Laken and much much more. This book has you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. I love how through all the bad and ugly you get a lot of love weaved into the story, there is a brilliant balance of good and bad all the way through. Rune is a very compassionate character with a lot of love to give, even if she is supposed to be this big bad monster. The characters are all so loveable in a scary "I'll cut you up" sort of way, I also like that Laken isn't afraid of doing anything to her people. I don't do spoilers so there isn't too much I can say about the actual storyline without giving a lot away. All you need to know is that you have to read this book!
This book was freaking amazing! This series keeps getting better book after book i'm not kidding! So many things going on and the ending omfg are you serious?!!! You can't end a book like that noooo.... Laken Cane manages to suck you into the book and have you holding your breath on every word from start to finish and when the story is done it'll blow your mind, wow just wow, I was happy things didn't go the way I thought they would but at the same time I was like "What?! What?! Are you kidding me?! but... I don't.... understand?" This book will definitely make your head explode to the point where you'll be demanding book 6 RIGHT NOW! that's how freaking awesome this book is and how good a writer Laken Cane is.
I've got one of the tackiest Southern-Twangs you've ever heard so when I say 'DAMANNNNNNN' understand that there are many consonants in THAT word! Laken Cane don't write no sparklin' vamp like critters now y'all.....no way no how! This is some dark stuff! This is some brilliant stuff! This is some gut-wrenchin, kick ya when you're down, not give ya time to catch your breath before you get punched in the teeth kind of brutality stuff! But ya know what......... I believe this is some just keeps getting better stuff! Laken Cane makes you love this Crew. Period. You love them. You hurt for them. You cry for them. You rage for them. And at the end of the day you can NOT wait to find out what it going to happen next to them. Start with book one....'Shiv Crew'. ABSOLUTELY START!
Ah, it was a wild ride with this one- a little bit uncomfortable in places- sort of like the car wreck you don't want to see but can't stop looking. Rune has grown into something I no longer want to be- she's wild and awesome! You know how if you eat some really hot spicy food and you're lips burn and you hang your mouth open and for a while you just can't drink enough iced tea? Yeah, that's this book. You may eat Denny's for a while afterward but sooner or later you'll be back to that same old Thai restaurant that gave you the lip burn before. I might have to re-read this series.
Best one in the series yet. It really had me on the edge of seat the entire book. Rune keeping showing the reader and her crew new sides of her. The story stays fresh and I fell more in love with the Crew as a whole. It helps that you see more of Owen Five in this book. He is my favorite! It will be hard to wait for the next installment, but at least I know it will be good. Laken Cane never lets me down!
New Regime was amazing. So much happened to the Shiv Crew, so many secrets, mistrust, loads of action and never forget the romance mixed in. Owen the cowboy is definitely still a mystery to me. Rune and the twins have been through so much my heart continues to break for them. This has been such a great series. Ms. Cane has done an amazing job with this series. I cannot wait until book 6 is available.
I should know better than to start reading a Rune book on a evening during the work week. Started reading at 8 pm last night. Next time I looked at the clock it was 4.37am. I had to get up at 6am <:-|
Gosh, I love this series!!!! This was another great installment in the Rune Alexander series. I can't wait for the next book. This series is gritty and action packed and I love it. If you like a fast paced, action packed and gritty urban fantasy series, then give this one a try.
Rune is an awesome character and so are her crew. They get into tighter and tighter spots. The hits just keep coming. Great book and writing that keeps the reader sucked in.
Another amazing Rune story! So many threads to follow and each one is amazing. I love the fact that there is ALWAYS something new to learn in each of the books. Can't wait for the next!!
This little freak series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine despite all the messed up topics. Someone referred to them as “hard topics” though and I guess that’s a nice way of saying seven days of fuzzed up. Anyway.
This book- this series -is like going through a house of horrors on medication. You see everything but you keep moving on, numb from compartmenting, until you get to the end or break down and continue. That’s how this all feels. Am I happy? Eh. I hate the numb feeling. But honestly I don’t think I’d read as fast as I do if I didn’t have it here. I’ve read some books that don’t shield you and it’s a LOT. So. Yeah.
The characters are… there. Rune and the people she interacts with are really the only ones I see actively growing. The drama is what tells me how the rest are doing. The reveals and wondering keep me on my toes. I like the world created, the triumph.
All I can say is WOW!! What a series! At times I thought some of it was too much for me to handle….but I just couldn’t put it down. The zombie stuff is something I have never wanted to read about or even watch on t.v. But I just love the characters in this series….mostly Rune, Strad, Lex and Ellis. Laken Cane is one of a kind. She is an incredible writer! I’m so glad I didn’t have to wait on each book coming out. It would have made me nuts! 🤪 Thank you Laken for taking me away into this crazy world of the insane, action packed, horror filled world with a good monster and her team to save the day!
Rune Alexander and the Shiv Crew face every person's nightmare: a new company (with competitors), new bosses (with serious clout and worse attitudes), and new rules (kill who we say not who you want).
I know. Hell, right?
But hey, they'll figure things out in New Regime because they're Shiv Crew, and that's what they do!
This was so gripping! I read it in one day and just couldn't put it down. The plot was full of interesting twists and turns. The characters are both complex, heartwarming, and at times, heartbreaking. I hope that maybe one day Gunnar will get his own novellas.
This is an absolute page turner from beginning to end!! So many different things happening!! Always something new in every book to keep your undivided attention!!! Awesome job Lake Cane!!!
Book 5 kicks off where we were last left with book 4. Sooo many things happen in this book its almost overwhelming for the characters, and maybe the readers. But once again, laken delivers another solid hit for this series.
