This was such a cute little picture book recommended as a family read for children as young as 3 years old. A story about 2 brothers, the older brother teaching his little brother his first word “dibs” and just like any other baby scenario, when you teach a baby a word, that’s all they ever say.. however in this case, bubs calls “dibs” on absolutely everything and those around it see it through from when he calls dibs on an aeroplane or a bakery even the White House Lol such a cute story, makes the kids laugh and the illustrations are quite colourful and eye catching. Special thx to Walker Books Publishers for sending me a review copy of this book.

Julian’s little brother, Clancy, learns very quickly that he needs to call dibs on anything he wants. He calls dibs on his parent’s bed, but that’s when things start to go crazy. Clancy calls dibs on a bakery, on an airplane, and even on NASA where he ends up blasting off into space. This leaves Julian happy, having all his parents attention again. But eventually he must go off into outer space to meet aliens and find his brother. This story is really “out there” if you know what I mean! 🙂 The illustration for this book were created with Photoshop, Painter, and Procreate.

I laughed so much with this book. The big brother is always calling dibs, so of course that's the first word the little brother learns. It gets silly fast.

DIBS! is a story about brotherhood. Julian constantly calls dibs on toys and snacks from his younger brother Clancy. Clancy is watching, and soon, his first word is DIBS! Before long, Clancy has not only called dibs on the toys, but also his parents’ bed, then the White House and NASA! Clancy has gone to outer space.

Julian is excited to have everything to himself at first, but then he realizes he misses Clancy. He goes to the museum and takes a rocket to space to find Clancy, and saves him from the aliens who called dibs on the ship. With some lovely messages about sharing/selfishness and sibling rivalry, this book is a comical adventure.

What I loved: Julian and Clancy have quite the adventures here, and children will laugh at Clancy’s dibs on the White House and outer space. The messages about selfishness and sibling rivalries are also really cute and get the point across subtly. Children and adults can enjoy the beautiful illustrations that accompany the delightful text.

Final verdict: This is a fantastic read for children who have brothers or sisters and/or who just love to laugh! With detailed and lovely images along with some fantastic adventures, DIBS! is a truly fun read that will engage and delight young readers.

True to Laura Gehl's genius for showing authentic family relationships, two brothers "up the ante" with each other, calling dibs on bigger and bigger things. The sibling rivalry comes to a head when the brothers realize that their love for each other outweighs their desire to outdo the other. DIBS is a heartwarming read that is fun and silly, but also an example of family loyalty and love.

Little brother Clancy’s first word is, “Dibs!” As well it should be since he’s been hearing it said by big brother Julian all his young life.

Julian called dibs on everything. “Dibs on the astronaut costume.” “Dibs on the star cookies.” “Dibs on the solar system plate.”

One day, popping his binky out of his mouth, Clancy says, “Dibs” and life will never be the same for his family again.

Marcin Piwowarski’s adorable, hilarious illustrations make this book. Big brothers, little brothers. Sibling rivalry is taken to a whole new level.

Growing up, our major battles were more over calling “Shotgun” (Is that still a thing?) but Dibs! by @AuthorLauraGehl and Marcin Piwowarski perfectly captures the vicious sibling battles and raises it to absurd extremes. (TY to @beckyscharn for the rec) #PB #kidlit

Julian always called "dibs" on everything he wanted. Eventually, his little brother's first word was "dibs!", and he called it first ... and took it too far. Great story, nice ending, beautiful illustrations.

If your kids already know the saying “dibs” it’s cute, but I’m not trying to teach them that so I’ll be taking this back to the library

Clever idea but a bit too outrageous to follow for me. It went too far over the top too quickly. The art is great, though.

Ages 4 and up. A comical story about kids learning to share. After the older brother abuses the act of calling dibs to get what he wants, the baby figures out how to do it and reign over all. Featuring an East Asian family.
