Volume notes: The cultural festival arc that unfolds in this chapter is a welcome break from all that studying.
Series review: "We Never Learn" or #BokuBen is a comedy manga that draws its laughs from the interactions of the main character Yuiga with his harem, I mean, his classmates Fumino, Ogata, and Uruka. He tutors them, with a college scholarship on the line for him. There are also two other supporting characters in the periphery, teacher Kirasu, and recent alum Asumi, whose orbits sometimes cross into the paths of the main cast. It has the usual pervy tropes found in manga of its ilk, although toned down because of the high school setting. It was a manga I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did. It gave me that "finale high" which I associate with stories that get me as a reader.
One reason I probably enjoyed this series is the earnestness of the main character. One can't help but cheer for him. He's a good guy and hopelessly clueless sometimes, which is main component of his charm.
And a good time was indeed had by all. And who's hand was he holding???
Well, the school festival has now come & gone. Hijinks, flustered feelings, & misunderstandings abounded. But pray tell, who was the lucky girl? Humm! Interesting things afoot, for the next volume, I suspect. School festivals, so much fun. Back in my day, they were usually associated with the various American holidays- Valentine's Day, Halloween, etc. Plus also seasonally associated ones. Regardless, they were always so much fun. If any of you readers are still in school, you need to know, these are the most prec6days of your lives. 20 years + from now on, you will look back at your junior hi & high school days with a smile, realizing just how special that time was. Make the most of it. Eat that school pizza. Ask that girl out. Even if you aren't very good, try out for that sport you like! Go to the dances, whether you are in a relationship or not! Thank your instructors. Help the kids struggling with their class work. Be a friend to the loners & outcasts. Join the club you like, regardless of what anyone says. All the main characters are doing just that. They are making the most of their formative years. Good for them! But seriously, whose hand was mr. Tutor holding when the 1st firework went off? Talk about a cliffhanger! Art, very well done. Dialogue, excellent. Very real & entertaining. Characters, believable, relatable, adorable.
School festival arc! This could really have happened in any other series, nothing special for We Never Learn. Was it terrible? Not really. But it's... just a school festival arc. Whatever.
UPDATE: After thinking it over, I've decided I'm dropping this series. This series isn't bad, but I'm not interested in wasting my time following a series that, to me, tends to fluctuate in terms of quality. I would much rather focus on the series that have been consistently good and the new series being released this year than a series that started out fine and has since become a roller coaster of quality. Also, it dawned on me that I have no interest in figuring out who he ends up with (because, let's face it, that's really the only reason why you finish this series) and the pacing of the girls' academic success is unbearably slow. Don't let my opinion sway yours; this is overall a good series and if you're enjoying that's great, but I can't fathom spending money on a series I longer have any interest in.
The contrivances...HOLY SHIT, the number of contrivances in this volume were appalling. Usually I love school festivals in manga, but this was SO DAMN BORING. And bogged down by some of the most insulting contrivances I've ever seen. The minute the costumes got switched I knew exactly where it was going and was so uninteresting. Also, why the FUCK is the Thorn Society still a thing?! Holy shit, I hate this stupid group of girls and wish they'd disband RIGHT FUCKING NOW!
While this isn't the worst volume in the series, I'm struggling to find something to praise. I did like the chapter where Takemoto and Kirisu teach Yuiga how to swim, especially Kirisu's advice to Takemoto, and the scene where Takemoto and Kirisu team up to do a concert was fun. Seeing Sekijo's backstory regarding her struggles accepting her own genius and Ogata thanking her for seeing her denseness in a positive light was nice too, though the accidental pervert scene at the end kind of ruined it. And of course, best girl Kominami continues to be best girl, so that's always a plus. Aside from those aspects, there really wasn't anything that I enjoyed especially since the comedy was below sub-par.
This series has been better than this. For something as stock as a school festival arc, it really feels like they don’t mine it for the kind of gags the series typically does. Bit of a letdown.
Okay, this volume was funnier than I thought it would be. First, intense interviews. Second, female 'friend' bonding. Third, swim lessons. Fourth and best, the school festival.
The festival was awesome because everyone was spread out but somehow the author managed to put together a whirlwind day that still flowed into a cohesive story from start to finish.
But that firework silhouette scene was torture! Who was that and why did this series suddenly become the anime version of How I Met Your Mother??! (Answer: So we can get multiple endings, one for each love interest, in volumes 17-21! A round of applause for the author!)
This volume largely ignored the theme of the series (tutoring fellow students) and lost something as a result. Hopefully, the author will return to the central theme; otherwise, this is destined to become just another high school rom-com.
