By Moms, for Moms―Redefining Motherhood for a New Generation
With This Is Motherhood, the cofounders and contributors of the Motherly online community present a collection of essays and practices to celebrate motherhood in all its complexity.
Here you’ll find reflections on each phase of "the wild ride of motherhood," including the soaring highs of meeting your new baby, the ground-shaking lows that make you doubt everything you’ve ever known, and all the beauty and pain in between. Each chapter closes with practices from Motherly’s team of wellness experts to help you define, clarify, process, and celebrate your journey.
This book was created to inspire and guide you through some of the most miraculous and stressful milestones of your life, such
• New Mama―get ready for the mysterious, unpredictable, and beautiful start to your new life as a mother • Firsts―each step is brand new to you and your baby . . . and a chance to discover your way to learn and love • Mental Load―even with the worries, the to-do lists, the midnight emergencies, you deserve time and attention, too • Village―how to find the support that’s all around you, because you aren’t meant to do this alone • Transformation―discover and embrace the powerful, loving, capable woman who’s been molded by motherhood
There are many ways to get motherhood right. It’s not your mother’s path or your sister’s path or that seemingly-perfect mom from your kid’s preschool’s path. It’s yours . You get to define―and redefine along the way―your experience of motherhood.
And you are not alone.
Each essay in This Is Motherhood is a letter to you, from one mama to another, to remind you that your feelings are normal. That you’re doing an amazing job. That you’re stronger than you even realize.
First, I want to say that I won this book through a giveaway in exchange for an honest review...
Wowzaaaa! What an incredible book! This is probably the absolute BEST book there is out there for new mothers, or mothers of any kind for that matter! It felt so much more real hearing directly from real mother’s instead of just some textbook shit. This book is full of amazing contributions from women that know their stuff! I am so glad I won this book and I will be keeping it for a very long time! I have already told multiple friends about it too! Thank you to the sponsors for letting me read this book!!
A book about and in favor of motherhood will always get a 5 star from me. I had just given birth to my 4th baby when I took a stroll to a thrift store to get some books. And I saw this one staring at me.
Saying ‘Fine geh, you see motherhood boldly written on me and you want to skip me, never. Pick me abeg, it is 5 thousand Naira only.
I took it fast fast before someone else come and chance me.
Anyway, I read all of the entries and boy I was relieved. I wasn’t a terrible mother after all. We are all struggling. Trying our best, despite the mom guilt, the picture perfect family we are always inundated daily on social media.
I am only a a third of the way through this book and I’m so impressed, thankful, and overwhelmed that I can leave a 5 star review with much certainty about the remainder.
As a new mother, in any situation, this book is a must. It is healing, is is beautiful and it embraces the high highs and the low lows of motherhood. I am nine months into motherhood. It was an unplanned pregnancy and I have struggled with the transition. I read several sections before bed last night and today was the first day that I truly felt proud, supported, competent, excited and happy about who I am as a mother and the journey to come.
I will be recommending this book to all of the mothers that I know, and buying it for all of the new mothers to come.
I love everything about this book, the writing, the personal stories, the journal exercises after each chapter…it’s the perfect book for a new mother. There are also mediations and project suggestions (such as a vision board or writing a letter) that are a great addition. The stories are broken up into sections (strength, love, firsts ect…) and there is something to relate to in each story no matter where you are at in the journey of motherhood. The writing is honest and wonderful, capturing the chaos and beauty of motherhood that I haven’t read in any other book. I’ve already bought this several times as gifts for other new moms. Highly recommended!
I’ve actually been reading this for a couple years, but it’s nice to have on hand to remind me about this beautiful, crazy, amazing journey I’m on through motherhood. There are other moms out their going through what I am in the best and worst moments. These stories make me laugh, tear up with joy and sadness, and reflect on how blessed I am to have these two little people in my life, no matter how much I feel overwhelmed at times.
Such a lovely, light-hearted, touching look at all aspects of motherhood. This book brought me such comfort during the early days of my son's life. It's certainly one that I'll return to as he grows up!
