This story has such a delightful collection of absolute fucking lunatics.

It's a shame so many of them don't survive.

five stars for Edogai alone.

I loved this volume, it has quality Ogata content, Tanigaki content (that sad backstory) and intense chase in the coal mines.

The art is so beautiful.

This is the most macabre volume of Golden Kamuy as the Western veers sharply into horror territory with the introduction of a taxidermist who

The rest of the volume is actually a bit tame as the author takes some time to visit with the various factions and individuals who are searching for the tattooed men whose skin depict portions of a map to hidden treasure. There's also a chapter flashback to the Russo-Japanese War for one of the side characters.

The ending goes way over the top with an unlikely mining car chase scene straight out of Scooby-Doo.

Thanks to Yasaku Edogai, things are getting interesting. Fake skins can be troublesome for factions trying to get their hands on real skins, but surely it will be even more fun.

Satoru Noda has this incredible knack for blending humor with the darkest of moments, and this volume is no exception. It’s wild how one minute you're laughing, and the next you're thrown into some pretty heavy stuff. Honestly, it’s a ride I’m totally here for.

Noda also has a gift for creating some of the most bizarre yet fascinating characters, and I can’t get enough of it. The fact that they’ve finally crossed paths with Hijikata has me wondering what kind of unpredictable twists are coming next. How on earth will they manage to work with him?

This one felt like a filler to me. The taxidermist storyline was odd, nothing really happened with Asripa and Sugimoto. The only interesting thing was Tanigaki's backstory.

Wow.
Este tomo lo tiene todo. Me hizo reír. Me hizo llorar. Me perturbó.

As Golden Kamuy, Vol. 8 (Chapters 70 to 80) opens, the diviner, Inkarmat, makes her move to find Asirpa, and she gets former 7th Division soldier, Genjiro Tanagaki, to help her. But why is she so interested in the Ainu girl? Meanwhile, our heroes' nemesis, Lt. Tsurumi, plots to make it difficult for any rival to find the tattoo “maps” to the treasure. So he finds psychotic taxidermist, Yasaku Edogai, and seeks to add him to his ploy to deceive the other treasure hunters. But how will Tsurumi convince the truly bizarre but supremely talented Edogai to use his talents in Tsurumi's service.

The Golden Kamuy manga is certainly one of the best historical manga that I have ever read. It is so intense, yet creator Satoru Noda tells this story so beautifully.

Golden Kamuy Graphic Novel Volume 8 does not offer more of the same. Yes, this volume is intense, but there is a cart race (of sorts) in the last act of this volume that had me flipping pages almost faster than I could read then. Also, I don't know if I want to call Noda demented, but his depiction of the taxidermist and his work is crazy-cray-cray. I would say that Edogai's story could generate at least a few volumes of manga, and, judging by Noda's imagination in depicting Edogai's talent, would also result in some interesting costumes for him to wear.

"the Jewish Communist party, led by Lenin". Not a good look.

Given the extensive research put into this series, I do believe Noda included this as characterisation of Hijikata and not as a refection of his own beliefs.

"MR DUNN, YOU SEEM LIKE A DECENT GUY" Sugimoto WHAT. That fucker doesn't get to be gracious and give Asirpa the bow.

I absolutely loved Tanigaki's backstory. The kane mochi with walnuts fucking finished me. I can see why he's Noda's favourite.

I LOVE EDOGAI. Fashion icon. I'm really appreciative that his whole deal didn't seem to involve gender dysphoria or general self-identification shenanigans; he and Buffalo Bill share a prototype (Ed Gein), so I'm glad more confusion hasn't been created. His relationship with Tsurumi is EVERYTHING. Tsurumi was making use of Edogai's skill, but it felt less like manipulation (who am I kidding, it's mainly manipulation) and more like he was collabing with a favourite artist of his. Devastated he's dead, but will delve into fics of them.

Also, I'd like to see a taxidermist in a non-horror setting. Just once, as a treat.

Ogata and Sugimoto are in the same space :)

I really don’t get it... turn to pages 14-15, then Google image search Chidorigataki Falls. The first image you encounter is the exact same one on those pages. Not a pencil and ink recreation but a cut, paste, filter, scratch some lines Photoshopped piece. On a two page splash for goodness’s sakes! There are about a half dozen more panels with the same “technique”... Gah!

If you can get over that (and I, obviously, can), it is another terrific volume. Lieutenant Tsurumi is in need of a very particular set of skills, and he finds an apparent Norman Bates/Buffalo Bill lovechild who is just the freak for the job! There’s an abbreviated Indiana Jones inspired mine cart chase with explosive results and an unexpected rescuer, and more fun than you can shake an ekimne kuwa at!

Just when I think the enemies can’t get more disturbing, a new one sweeps in and makes me go “what the fuck.” I guess this is what happens when you are chasing convicts and willing to do anything to reach your goals! But also why is he like this! Edogai has such a twisted mind.

We learn the backstory of Tanigaki in this volume and it was a great payoff after the way we quietly get more invested in him as he turns away from the 7th division and more towards admiring the Ainu village that cared for him. His tale is so complex but I liked the discussion on finding your own purpose, not spurred on by another person or expectation.

I have a few unrelated things I want to say, but first of all my WILDCAT OGATA is the cover! CHEERS for me!

Edogai Yasaku! At first I was thinking he was Norman Bates, from Alfred Hitchcock's film, Psycho (1960) with the taxidermy and him mentioning his mother on the other room resting. It's really him. But then the notes at the end mentioned he was modeled from Ed Gein which also makes sense! Nice.

Tanigaki's story about his mochi made me cry really. Also, the mention of histories are really neat! Very smooth, like the mention of Lenin and etcetera.

Really interesting volume! (I am bias towards Ogata tbh LOL)

Edogai is creepy as heck.
This volume brings several complications for our group as spring comes to Hokkaido, as well as some more beautiful landscapes. Noda has talent with both the bizare and picturesque, and this showcases that.
A chase through a coal mine and Edogai's final words reveal that things are going to get complicated, with several fake tattooed skins being given to Tsurumi- however where is the sixth one?
We also get to learn more about Tanigaki's past and there's a prophecy about Asirpa- which one will betray her if it's true?
This is a pretty good series so far.

This is the greatest manga series of all time. In the space of one volume you can go from a horrifying riff on Psycho involving a series of increasingly deranged costumes made out of human skin, to a heart-wrenching tale of a man trying to get revenge on his murderous brother in law that ends in tears, to a a comical mine-cart chase that ends in a deadly serious story of survival after a coal-mine explosion.

WHAT OTHER SERIES COULD HAVE THIS RANGE?????

I really loved the backstory given for Tanigaki in this volume it really made me enjoy the character a lot more. Edogai, what a mad guy, his contribution to the story was great and added a lot of intrigue to the plot moving forward. Also are we getting a collab in the next few volumes because that ending... i’m excited!

One very freaky ass Taxidermist and a giant chase through a mine! While there's more general travel in this volume, it's less exciting than those before. We get a very sad backstory for one of our former soldiers, a quest for revenge that doesn't end as you expect. Curious where these fakes will lead our cast, as alliances keep shifting.

Disturbing. This volume in my opinion brings the strange to a new level. I think this is the volume when my daughter dropped off the series and said it was just a bit too much for her. I can understand it. There is so much going on here...I will continue to read but man oh man...some disturbing things go down in this volume. No more explanation is needed...trust me!

An interesting volume yet a little too offputting in regards to the whole Edogai arc. Lt. Tsurumi's plans though are interesting and I'm excited to see where it leads. We got some great insight into one of my favorite characters, the hunter Tanigaki.
