When studious Nariyuki tutors two supergeniuses who are total dunces in their favorite subjects, he’ll get a crash course in love!
Nariyuki Yuiga comes from an impoverished family, so he’s eager to secure a full scholarship to college when he graduates high school. His principal agrees, with one stipulation—he must tutor the two smartest girls at the school and make sure they get into their target colleges! Rizu is a science genius who wants to study liberal arts. Fumino is effortlessly good at literature, but math makes her head spin. Nariyuki is stuck between a rock and a hard place, but who can complain about tutoring a couple of cute girls?
Nariyuki Yuiga’s tutoring duties just don’t stop! He must contend with a teacher with a messy home life, a shocking number of romantic hijinks and long walks in public with beautiful girls and lost cats, all on top of making sure that everyone is studying efficiently! Not to mention…a kiss?!
Volume notes: This series is starting to get interesting as two of the girls realize that they both like Yuiga. This is also the volume where Fumino starts to become my favorite character as well. If this series is goign to end with one victor, I'll be sailing the Fumino-Yuiga ship.
Series review: "We Never Learn" or #BokuBen is a comedy manga that draws its laughs from the interactions of the main character Yuiga with his harem, I mean, his classmates Fumino, Ogata, and Uruka. He tutors them, with a college scholarship on the line for him. There are also two other supporting characters in the periphery, teacher Kirasu, and recent alum Asumi, whose orbits sometimes cross into the paths of the main cast. It has the usual pervy tropes found in manga of its ilk, although toned down because of the high school setting. It was a manga I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did. It gave me that "finale high" which I associate with stories that get me as a reader.
One reason I probably enjoyed this series is the earnestness of the main character. One can't help but cheer for him. He's a good guy and hopelessly clueless sometimes, which is main component of his charm.
My, how torrid things have become! And the last page is a shocker!
Well, interesting things afoot, to be sure. Sleeping beauty &sensei sure are spending a lot of time together, and now at the spot lovers meet at?!?! Say it ain't so! But wait, the mathematician mistress is falling too... oh, dear! Poor miss mermaid! It's all gonna come crashing down, sweety! Once you recover, you should tell him how you really feel. Poor girl. I'm rooting for her the most. Why? Well, just read & see! Art, very good. Dialogue, excellent. Characters, believable, relatable, loveable.
I really like all the characters here. It was great to see everyone bonding and there was some pretty funny moments as well, like Rizu looking angry from having bad glasses and the whole misunderstanding about Fumino's relationship with Nariyuki. I also really like how earnest he is and the way he's sweet but still acts like a boy his age.
Wow, rating this volume was an absolute struggle for me. I eventually settled on four stars despite the numerous issues that I have, which will be discussed first and are as follows:
1. The fan service in this volume extremely hit or miss. Some scenes, like Furuhashi pushing Yuiga into Rizu to get them to embrace only for him to fall face first into her boobs, are so predictable I can't even be mad at it. Others, like Yuiga walking in on his female teacher on the floor of her apartment with her ass on display, made me cringe. However, the entire chapter devoted to the characters studying while bathing I found pretty funny and aesthetically pleasing.
2. Kirisu's logic behind forcing Rizu and Furuhashi to stick to the strong suits makes sense in theory but not in context. The reason why her dreams were cut short were because she chose a sport where an athlete has a limited time as a pro in said sport. Furuhashi and Rizu want to attend schools that focus on academics, which will offer longer lasting careers. I get where Tsutsui is coming from with her backstory and that Kirisu's whole thing is careers should be decided with logic rather than emotion, but from a logical standpoint her argument doesn't work because her prior career was completely different than Rizu and Furuhashi's present career goals. Sorry, but in terms of motivations this is easily one of the weakest I've ever seen.
3. The 3-A Committee to Protect Sleeping Beauty, aka the Thorn Club. Are you actually kidding me with this? Why is this necessary? How is this going to enhance the plot in any meaningful way? Oh wait, it doesn't. It's a complete waste of time, wasn't interesting, and wasn't funny. Thanks, Tsutsui, thanks a bunch.
Now I know what you're thinking, "if you have so many problems with this volume, why'd you give it four stars?". Here's why:
1. Most importantly, I really enjoy some of the chapters and these individual chapters made up for some of the issues I have. As I mentioned earlier, I love the chapter where everyone's studying in the bath, but I also love the chapter where Rizu uses her old glasses. Just her perpetual squinty face is hilarious and adorable at the same time. I also really like back to back chapters with Uraka giving Yuiga a homemade lunch and trying to wrestle with rumors about him dating. The comedy is strong and Furuhashi gets to shine a bit, too.
2. The art is incredibly strong in this volume, mostly for comedy but the characters' designs are really well-drawn. Everybody looks great and adorable, plus there are added art bits like Furuhashi putting together in her mind that Rizu likes Yuiga with puzzle piece imagery. I really enjoy it and it makes me smile as I read it.
3. I'm glad that not only does Uraka know that she has feelings for him and is actively trying to confess to him, but Furuhashi has figured out both Uraka and Rizu like Yuiga as well. This level of self-awareness and character awareness is pretty rare in most romance manga and it is a refreshing breath of fresh air.
This turned out to be a bit more ranty than wanted it to be, but those are my thoughts on this volume. There was enough in it that made me give it such a high rating, but I do have concerns for this series. I can only hope it continues to be as entertaining as it has been because I do enjoy this series, despite its flaws.
4/5 More of the same but I’m here for it. I like the cast and the humor. It’s a fun harem manga. Volume 3 focuses a lot on misunderstandings, very stereotypical for the genre. Uruka is still the only one who has out right said she has a crush on Nariyuki but there’s rumors and misunderstandings all over involving the other girls. We also spend more time with Kirisu Sensei which is awesome. The bath time study chapter also kills it.
Rizu showing off her swimming skills with Fumino & Uruka. Kawase & Umihara in the background.
And it continues! We Never Learn remains nearly infinitely cute, with the characters relationships developing with some relatively meaningful events and revelations. It is absolutely insane how well this author has done to develop these characters, and I hope the quality stays this consistently high!
I really liked the direction this series started off in, but now it feels like it's going more into a girls-fawn-over-nerdy-guy story. It's not bad, just not what I was hoping for. Still interested in continuing.
True to its title, the girls in this series never learn. They're all interested in their tutor, Nariyuki, whose selflessness seems somehow irresistible to these characters. High school drama ensues.
We're getting good and bad plot development here- people realizing characters have crushes... but also, seemingly adding a teacher as a love interest (ew). The art's very cute though, fanservice aside the characters have great reaction faces.
Volume:7.5/10

This is supposed to be a harem style manga where Mr. Plain-but-Genuine gets wins all the girls hearts...WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE I'M READING A SHOJO?! I don't care if Rizu or Fumino are supposed to end up with Nariyuki. I ship Nariyuki x Uruka. (Also, PLEASE don't make the teacher fall for him. That's just gonna be weird.)
Speaking of weird, a WARNING to anyone reading this volume! This one has a whole chapter of bath scenes so there will be a lot of (mildly censored) nudity. I repeat, this is a NSFW volume!
More silliness -- accidental hugs, kisses, exposures, etc. Towards the end of this volume the silliness diminished somewhat and the story improved.
There is at least one interesting character in this manga -- Kirisu Mafuyu, the former tutor to Rizu and Fumino. She has her own opinions about the goals of the education and volume 3 begins to expose the source of her opinions. If this manga ends up being interesting to an adult, she may well be the source of that interest.
