A good book that got better towards the end. The beginning was very slow this book would have been the power up stage of the game. You have to fill up your inventory before setting off on the adventures or quests. Also find more powerful item.

Continuing the game type flow oc the book this is a run around in animal form, collect your items and level up before the boss battle.

I would give book 3 stars for the story being too slow, 5 stars for the artwork, and 3.5 stars for the action as it was too brief and a bit too late. The selling point of this is the artwork. Also on an important story note we see the main big bad and a link to the past (pun intended).

In this volume we finally get some explanation for Midna's mean behavior. It doesn't excuse her, but it does develop her better as a character, and we finally reach the turning point where she stops acting only her own interest and starts caring about others. The backstory we are given is entirely new content not seen in the game, and it adds a lot of depth to both Midna and Zelda, which was quite beautiful.

Speaking of additional story, Link himself has a new and mysterious backstory that was spoken of in Book 1 and is still hinted at even in Book 5. I am quite curious how the manga plans to resolve it.

And as you can see from the front cover--the Master Sword. At last. The art is truly impressive. I adored the sense of awe and foreboding as Link walks in the footsteps of the legend before him--the Hero of Time, and the amount of respect still left to that legacy. In the space of a few panels, the comic manages to give the Master Sword a greater impression of pure power than you ever sense in the games. A power that can conquer evil. But with those epic and triumphant visuals, comes a certain...foreboding. A shadow. Such subtlety in the drawings, but definitely there. For if one is to defeat evil, one must first confront the darkness within oneself.

Content: I will note that the spirituality in this series has been a bit confusing so far. There is a definite Light and Dark, but then there is also the Twilight, which usually gets grouped into the Dark by the wise sages of Hyrule, which is treated as grossly unfair. And I get it, religious leaders can often get things wrong, but even the SPIRITS OF LIGHT warn that the Shadow Magic wielded by Midna is...not good....but Link continues to put his trust in Midna, which I assume will pay off. It's just a bit muddled in what message its trying to send.

The Manga is filled with action and interesting facts about the Twilight Princess. For those who've played the game it's all that and more as they dig deeper into the lore and plot points into the game.

Ahh so good!!!
In this beautifully illustrated volume of Twilight Princess, we get an even closer look at our three "main characters": Link, Midna... and Zelda. Finally we learn more about our very silent princess, who so far has been locked up in a tower, very fairytale like. I was confused earlier as to why she has seemed not to... DO anything... but her being locked away because of the danger that is outside of her tower makes very much sense. I LOVED seeing her backstory, and Midna's backstory. The idea that we have two princesses in this story, one of light and one of midnight, is brilliant. Link has also grown a lot as a character. He has really stepped into his role as a hero in this volume. His slow way to confidence has been great to read about. And that ending! Ahh!
(I am also very, very much loving the small references to Ocarina of Time. My heart, ah. Skullkid, is that you?)

Another fun, if a tad slow, entry into this exciting manga. Himekawa continues to take stories that only work as games and making them work as manga. Bring on the next!

I thought the manga existed to further flesh out the story, but so often it just feels like the authors are abridging it. The Arbiter's Ground chapter in particular is really disappointing. As usual, the art is amazing, but so much STORY content was cut out. I understand cutting out working through the dungeon. We don't need to see Link solving puzzles and collecting keys. But the whole raiding the bandit camp? The fires? And the boss fights! In this section each battle is ended with a single sword swipe. These are some of the most epic battles in the game and they're glossed over.

And I just wish the authors would let the art speak for itself. So often there's unneeded text bubbles explaining exactly what's going on. In the game, wolf link never speaks, except to animals. It makes sense! And his inability to verbally communicate, with midna or zelda, is emotionally powerful. It asks more of the artist, and these artists have the talent to make it happen. When Midna is on death's door, she's talking complete sentences, paragraphs. Saying less would've given more.

And the story between Midna and Zelda... one of the only new additions in this section. It didn't really work for me. It came off as cheesy. Where the sacrifice Zelda makes in the game, barely knowing Midna but willing to die(?) for her and her people, moved me.

This is the midpoint. I hope the latter half improves on these issues rather than exacerbating them.

"It's been a while Midna...hasn't it?

Oh snap! That really was Zant at the end of the last volume and he is not an evil force meaning to destroy our hero but he will try to get what what he wants even if he has to use the power granted him. Midna in peril and Link forced to bear the darkness imbued by Zant the duo must now seek out Zelda who can possibly help even though she is trapped in a now monster filled castle. It's hero time as Link does what he does whether man or beast and we get a glimpse into a shared destiny between Zelda and Midna as well as the prejudices of the Twilight and the lit realms each of them live in. There is also a scene that makes me think Skull Kid from Majora's Mask has been protecting the Master Sword but perhaps I am just making connections that are not there. :)

My favorite moment is probably Agatha shocked to see a wolf in town and reports it to protect her buggy friends. Next thing you know even though Link has done nothing wrong the statements started by Agatha escalate into making Link look truly sinister. :)

1/16/2023 Update:

Now having read the previous volumes, think I can appreciate more of the liberties taken with the story. Though a lot of the story beats are the same, the biggest difference I can see are characters reacting more to certain situations and sitting in those moments as a reader. The initial conflict here with Zant is very different and the obsessiveness of Zant over Midna has been turned all the way up. It's super uncomfy. I also love the extra details and backstory connecting Midna and Zelda and setting a deeper rooted foundation to their friendship. Though, lowkey I think Midna is getting little moments with everyone that can be interpreted as shippy, lol

Such beautiful art and I love how this story takes liberties from the source material! Such a good read ❤

Now this... this was perfect. We've hit a big turning point in the story, and it was written in such an amazing and emotional way, and I felt myself so immersed in the story. The smallest things really moved me, and I was inwardly crying over the things that I would have found mushy and cliche in any other book. I found the character interactions in this book to feel very genuine and was sweet, and it showed how much certain characters cared about each other despite how they may have acted earlier in the series. There were a lot of themes in this book in particular that could be connected to real life because this book did more than just show an adventure story and throw in a bit of stuff that symbols heroism and bravery. This book showed friendship, responsibility, selflessness, standing up for others, working hard, and the power of home.

I will be going into depth about the story, so spoilers will be ahead.

I was actually surprised by how genuine the emotions in this book were as well. There were a few moments like this earlier in the series: Ilia debating suicide, Link desperately searching for his friends, and Prince Ralis mourning the death of his mother just to name a few. But this book really seemed to hold all this emotion above our heads. Even from the first scene when Zant and Midna talk face to face there is so much courage and determination in the way she stands up to Zant. Then when she is dying Link puts himself in danger to bring her to Zelda, who sacrifices herself to help her. And then of course at the end we see a particularly sad moment when Midna realizes the mirror is broken and thinks that all her hard work was for nothing and that she might never be able to return to her home again. I felt so genuinely bad for the characters during these scenes, and I really like how Himekawa treated these emotional moments.

I also really enjoyed the scene of Link getting the master sword. There wasn't any buildup to this scene in previous books, but I didn't really care because I knew it was going to happen anyway. I like seeing how the master sword is introduced in different games/stories, and this was unique in its own ways. The way Link picked it up and immediately went into this epic inner-monologue was amazing, the art was so detailed and breathtaking, and the way he described the power coursing through his body was something else. It was sort of funny how he was so into it and then when Midna called his name he awkwardly snapped out of it. It's alright, Link, you can have your fun. I act the same exact way when I pick up a stick outside, so you are allowed to have your epic moment with the most powerful sword in all of Hyrule. I will say that those wooden marionette things were creepy and they were unnecessary. I will simply not be able to sleep tonight because their demented smiles that will traumatize anyone that looks at it.

The story was so amazing, but it was nothing compared to the ending, which I was not expecting. I knew our dear friend Ganondorf would be the big villain in the end or that he would at least be one of the important villains, and I remember over-reacting to his appearance at the beginning of the second volume. But for some reason I wasn't expecting him to be introduced yet and the reveal would have been towards the end, so I was surprised that he was brought up now. Thinking about it, it makes sense because, as I mentioned earlier, this is a real pivotal moment of the story, so it would make sense for there to this new piece information. I sort of wish Link and Midna could have found out about him in a different way, because they have already been handed so much information just by other characters sharing this convenient information, but I still think the reveal was so cool that it didn't matter that much to me. Now I really can't wait for the ultimate showdown between Link and Ganondorf because I'm so pumped up right now, and I will wait as long as needed for the final volume to come out so I can see it happen.

I know I've said this in all of my reviews so far for this series, but I'm really excited for the next book. The story has gotten to the point where it's snowballing, and I am enthusiastically chasing that snowball down a hill. Especially now that Link has the master sword the fight scenes are going to become 10000 times cooler, and I believe, at least based off the cover, Link goes off against or meets Dark Link in the next book. Dark Link is so iconic, and I know that he is difficult to defeat in the video game, so I really can't wait to see their interaction in the next book. If it does not stand up to my expectations I will be thoroughly dissapointed, so I'm crossing my fingers that it is absolutely amazing.

This series has been a lot of fun so far. I love how well they have taken the plot of the video game and adapted it to fit a comic. The artwork is absolutely beautiful; so detailed and expressive and captures all of the character perfectly! If you are a Legend of Zelda fan, or just an art fan, then I highly suggest taking a looks

And now I need to go into spoiler territory, so if you don't want spoilers, farewell for now.

I really loved the adapting and backstory going on in this issue. The main one was Midna and Zelda having met as little girls. They talk through a portal for a long time and become very close. But one day Zelda's tutor (Auru; great tie-in by the way) discovers Zelda has been peering into the Shadow Realm and orders the portal and all access to it to be sealed away. Both girls are heart-broken over the loss of their friend, and Midna is left thinking Zelda has abandoned her. It was a really nice touch and really built on the relationship that already existed in game.
The other bit I found super touching was when Link encounters the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods. Though Link is in wolf-form at the time, once the Skull kid sees the emblem for the Triforce of Courage he embraces Link and says "I have been waiting for you for so long! You said you would come back!" and as Link departs for the hidden temple adds "Come play with us again!" It was such a sweet moment I felt like crying! This tied in not only with Twilight Princess, but with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask as well, as this hints this is the very same Skull kid from that era. Which makes sense, since the Skull kids seem to be immortal.
All these little bitter-sweet moments really heightened the story and the sense of world and history. The one minor criticism I have is Link seems to suffer from major mood swings in this issue (actually in a few of the others as well.) He goes from being stoic or mildly curious to MASSIVELY intense in the space of a few seconds. I will not hold it against the manga-ka(s?) though because 1. It was bound to be an issue. Link is left kind of intentionally ambiguous, and his expressions slight, in the games so he can be the 'everyman' hero and each player can assign their own attributes to him. When creating the manga, the artists and writers had to pick a personality and story line for Link and just go with it, and it may or may not match up with each readers expectations. 2. I'm guessing these extreme reactions have parts to play in the plot. Whether is it the forces of light and darkness pulling on Link (which seems to be hinted at in this volume, Midna even comments that Link is acting a bit scary), or plot elements that I have yet to be revealed, I think it will all pay off in one way or another.

And with that, I eagerly await the next volume! Happy Reading!

I don't even know what this manga is anymore. I'm used to Akira Himekawa changing stuff in the most peculiar ways, and sometimes that can make the story a little better. Here (and increasingly with their adaptation of Twilight Princess), I am just getting more and more confused. I feel that I am descending into madness.

I hid this review so I could explain two things that I can remember currently about it. Firstly, the Princess Zelda and Midna interaction was very nice. I enjoyed it, though the logistics of the water / mirror was a little confusing. I'm not going to hate it for that. It was a sweet sentiment and I cared a bit more about Midna than in the game. That's a good thing.

But then... everything else. Firstly, I was looking forward to seeing them deal with Arbiter's Grounds how they had with the other dungeons for a gruelling four books. No other game got this special treatment, so I assumed that was the format they were going with. All was well. But they skipped the entire dungeon and boss fight. My beloved, useless spinner was gone. I was quite confused. And disappointed. That's not even mentioning the adapted plot.

Like I've said, when it comes to this manga, I've repressed a great majority of it. All that remains is the permeating sense of "What and why?" that happens throughout the whole thing. I think that's mainly due to Link's weird personality and broody backstory? So yeah... if you're reading the fifth volume, this no longer surprises you, probably. But as soon as I think they're going to leave it at that, they add more to deal with. I don't understand. This isn't required? Why?

In conclusion, that's the spirit of this review, even if I can't be too precise. I will end up buying the next volume because I am a slave to all Zelda merchandising, but I don't understand. I'm happy other people like it and get it but... I don't? It just seems redundant? Anyway, buckle up for more shenanigans that don't resemble the game at all next time in the Twilight Princess manga series, because I will be there too. Screaming in fright amongst people who are having so much fun on this roller-coaster.

I just want to say with no spoilers, this book has my favorite boss fight from the game, though I was disappointed that a certain aspect of that boss fight was not in this book. I do understand it would have been a little out of place had it been in here, but still was kind of hoping to see at least a nod to it.

Anyway this volume I feel was all about character growth. There was a lot revealed about the past relationship for two of the characters, which isn’t from the game, but I really liked how it fit so well within the canonical game story. Alongside that, I have liked the arc that Midna and Link have had so far in this series. This has helped the series, especially this volume, feel more than just a retelling of the game story. It has given this series its own identity apart from the game. I expected that I would enjoy the series, but I have loved it so much more than I thought I would have.

We hit the halfway point with this volume, and things show no sign of slowing down or declining in quality. Covering the visit to Hyrule Castle up through the Arbiter's Grounds, Link and Midna's adventure continues to be perfectly plotted, expanded in all the right places, and just downright sweet in others. I love the subplot about the previous Hero, and the backstory between Zelda and Midna was wonderful. The art's gorgeous as always, and Wolf Link looks super realistic.

This is what can be done when you have the time and the page space. Look at it this way - in 10 volumes, Akira Himekawa covered something like 6 previous games, and now we're getting 1 whole game across 10. It's just so much better. I really hope we get more once TP is finished - Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, and Breath Of The Wild are all ripe for the taking.

Much as I enjoyed the last two installments, I loved this even more.

Amazing as the game was, I'm overwhelmed yet again by how much more there really was to the storyline, and the depth of the character relationships explored in this manga series. While the game made it clear Midna and Zelda were acquainted, I really like how that relationship was a fair bit deeper here. It's so charming and so sad to know what got in the way of them having a fulfilling friendship with one another.

I feel the manga series has explored everyone's--Link's included--backgrounds with a great deal more thought and care, and the artwork is beautiful.

And that cliff-hanger wherein the Ganondorf climax is set to occur? You better believe I'm diving into the next one.

The quest continues...

So close and yet so far... I was starting to wonder how there was going to be 11 volumes when the story felt like it was coming to the conclusion in volume five. Obviously, I'm not even halfway there right? It's been so long since I played the game that I couldn't remember the details but I could remember some of the temples hadn't been hit yet. But considering how fast the manga has been flying through the gameplay stuff and focusing more on new world building content I wasn't sure if all that stuff was even going to get touched upon. Definitely worthy adding to your library, makes me want to play the game again. I don't currently have copies of the remaining volumes so it's going to be a little bit before I can binge on...

Twilight Princess is definitely becoming one of my favorite manga series. This story is incredible, and I love seeing the added storyline that goes with the game. The details are amazing and I love Link's character development.

The story is just getting better and better and the new characters you meet in each book add more and more to this great series.

This particular book made my emotions go flippity flop and it was crazy. I especially loved Link getting the master sword. Zelda disappearing to save Midna was insane, hope she comes back.

Anyway can't wait to keep reading. Until next time!
