Hexborn. Abomination. Unclean. Young Shiloh knows exactly what she is. She just refuses to let that stop her. Her illness might make her an outcast, but her broken body hides great magical power. The king's ruthless fixer, Silas, seeks to use that power to preserve the uneasy peace the kingdom has enjoyed since the end of the Siblings' War. Silas hauls Shiloh from her mountain village to the Royal Academy of Mages, where sorcery and court intrigue conspire to create danger around every corner. Can this child of war save the peace? Or will old sins rise to threaten Shiloh, Silas, and the kingdom of Bryn?
In addition to her work as an indie author of paranormal new adult fantasy, A.M. Manay is a former inner-city chemistry teacher, a singer, a yoga enthusiast, a Clerk of Session in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and a mother through domestic open adoption. She has a passion for increasing diversity in popular culture and for strong heroines who stand up for themselves, make their own decisions, and don't depend on romance as their reason for being.
Hexborn is a cross between GOT and Harry Potter. If you love the supernatural and magic, it's a must read. Manay is one of best writers I've come across in this genre. The characterization is superb and the plot original.
Shiloh is a young woman used to being shunned. Pink hair, pink eyes. The law of the land declares her kind as outcasts. Hexborn. Unclean. But Shiloh has powers and Silas, the king's enforcer, among other things, takes an interest in her and brings her to the Wizard Academy. It's best to have possible enemies close, he thinks.
Deception, betrayal and conspiracy plague the Kingdom of Bryn and Shiloh struggles to prove herself. She discovers more about her identity and the scope of her powers. Much more.
Although part of a series, the ending is satisfying and leaves an opening for the next chapter in Shiloh's adventures, which I can't wait to read.
Highly recommended for fantasy readers, young and old alike. Her books are better than Harkness, and yes, comparable and even better than some of Anne Rice's novels.
I began reading Hexborn slightly nervous, wondering if this book could possibly meet the massive expectations set by the literary genius that was the November Snow series. I had nothing to worry about. Once again, A.M. Manay has hit it out of the park. As with the November Snow series, this book showcases a cast of robust and intriguing 3-dimensional characters that you can't help but fall in love with and want to read more about. The world within which the characters reside is well-built, the storyline is fascinating, the plot twists are unexpected (to the point where - at one point - I actually gasped out loud, covering my mouth with my hand in horror as I thought, "Wait, WHAT?!", then whispered a resigned, "Oh NO!" as I frantically read on). But, again, it is the amazing cast of characters that has me waiting with bated breath for the next in the series (or...vibrating in my seat, feeling like a crack addict waiting for my next fix, but...that's the same, right?). As with the November Snow series, the characters are expertly "crafted" to demonstrate the motivations and personal conflicts that makes every one of them relatable, understandable and at least somewhat sympathetic, no matter how much you think you have the character pegged when you first meet him/her. Write like the wind, Ms. Manay; write like the wind! Don't prolong my suffering any longer than absolutely necessary for the release of the next book in this phenomenal new series!!!
I was given the opportunity to receive an ARC of this book, and since I loved this author's other series, I took full advantage to read this book. I was not disappointed. This author is brilliant in her story-telling ways and in her ability to create such incredible characters. Except for the first chapter, every chapter beings with a flashback from either Shiloh or Silas, her two main characters. The flashbacks help you to understand why the character behaves a certain way or why he/she does certain things.
These characters are not wholly good or evil. Well, maybe Shiloh is (for now). Still, I couldn't help but come to care for each of the characters, even the ones who deserved zero sympathy and earn his/her fate seven times over. The characters are so well created that I immersed myself into each of his/her circumstances.
The plot of this story is incredible! You've got a girl who is considered "unclean," who should have died as a child, and yet she does everything in her power (and she has a LOT of power) to help those who look down on her. You've got a man who tortures people and kills them as part of his job, and yet he can't help but protect the girl. You have a king who is self-centered and ruthless in his selfishness, and yet as vile as he can be, he also has a soft side to him. And then, there are a whole bunch of other characters who have their own motives for either wanting the kingdom to survive or working to have it destroyed.
There were certainly twists in this story that I did not see coming and others that left me with my jaw dropped, and that is not an easy thing to do since I find most stories entertaining but predictable. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to be released because this one left me craving more!
If you are a Game of Thrones or Harry Potter fan, you can remember the thrill of opening that first book, reading a chapter or two, and realizing that you were onto something big.
HEXBORN, the brand new YA fantasy novel by A.M. Manay, is the NEXT BIG THING. Hear me now, believe me later. I had the privilege of reading an ARC months ago, and I could not wait for this day, when the book would finally be available to everyone.
In HEXBORN, the first book in The Hexborn Chronicles, Manay has created a world full of danger, political intrigue, and magic. She's given us solid characters with depth, not the least of which is Shiloh, the young heroine of the story. Shiloh is different, and is therefore marginalized by the uneducated, yet coveted by those who would use her for their own selfish agendas.
Manay has created a richly drawn, exciting, and suspenseful world for her characters to traverse, and a map of her world is included in the book.
I can't say enough good things about HEXBORN. All I know is that I can't wait for the next book to find out what happens next for young Shiloh. 5 HUGE STARS!!!
I could NOT get enough of this book. It was like reading Game of Thrones and Harry Potter with a splash of The Scarlet Letter and King Henry IV's story all rolled into one great story. The story line is interesting and hard to guess so you don't get bored while reading the book. The action scenes are fast paced and don't lag (the nifty little list of spells and names provided help immensely). I definitely can NOT wait until the next book in this series comes out. Shiloh is someone I would want on my side any day.
Hexborn by A. M. Manay is a young adult high fantasy with mages who fight with weapons and curses in a backdrop similar to the Tudor Dynasty. Shiloh is a young woman who survived her cursed birth without a hand, pink eyes and hair, and deadly maladies that can manifest at any time. Taken under the wings of a powerful mage, she reveals hidden magical power that surpasses most mages. After her mentor dies, the king's ruthless fixer, Silas (who reminds me of Thomas Cromwell) takes her to be trained in the Royal Academy of Mages.
At the King's court, Shiloh becomes immersed in political intrigue and religious fervor of everyone surrounding the king. She earns the favor of the king when she saves his family from dark magic. Though she is considered unclean, a hexborn, she slowly wins the hearts and respect of instructors and students at the Academy, particularly Silas. However, her loyalties are tested, and she faces danger from those who threaten her, Silas, and the kingdom. She must rise above her humble beginnings and dark secrets to help preserve the uneasy peace since the end of the Siblings' War.
A. M. Manay is a masterful storyteller, weaving in back story at the beginning of each chapter to give insight into the current situation. The story is told primarily from the perspective of Shiloh and Silas. The three-dimensional characters have flaws, but they are engaging. We understand each of their motives as they struggle to come to grips with their challenges and feelings. Shiloh is an inspirational protagonist who teenage girls can aspire to be like. Although she has suffered as an outcast, she draws strength from her experiences and learns how to use her supernatural powers for the good of the kingdom and others. Silas also dramatically changes as a result of his interactions with her.
I highly recommend Hexborn for both young adults and adults who love reading fantasy with strong female characters who can rise from their humble beginnings and learn from their experiences to meet the challenges in life's journey.
This was a very beautiful and entertaining read. I really enjoyed it.
Shiloh Teethborn, the Hexborn, grew to adulthood in spite of the general belief that hexborns should not be allowed to live. She was the result of a curse that deformed her and made her an outcast. Her mother, Alissa, also known as the Usurper, wanted her dead. She ended up dead instead of her newly born baby. Shiloh grew up not knowing who her real parents were.
After the death of her teacher, Edmund Courtborn, bastard half-brother of Alissa, Silas Hatch, another bastard of some Lord of the Vine, who knew who Shiloh was, went and brought her to the court of Bryn. Silas was also known as the Baron of Northgate. At court, Shiloh showed great prowess in the art of magic and quickly rose from nobody to the rank of a noblewoman.
Between the turns and the twists of life in the palace; her saving the newly born princess Loor from an assassin to saving the kingdom of Bryn and establishing peace, she was hoping for a peaceful settled married life when the worse happened.
Of course, this is a series and if I want to know more about the intrigues surrounding Shiloh’s life, I will have to read Book 2 of the series. I do like stand-alone series. This is not one of them. But, the story of Shiloh is so interesting I would like to know how she fared in the end. Great storytelling!
Juxtaposing corsets with pink hair, jesters with destructive magic, and royalty with outcasts, Hexborn is an epic fantasy dripping with originality. The politics of war drive the plot, along with the journey of the protagonist Shiloh. Shiloh is blessed with enormous magical power, but at cost of being afflicted with curses, some of which could easily kill. She is an outsider, and unclean because of her curse, but she is brought to the royal court, regardless. She must navigate its treacheries and her own afflictions to stay alive.
The storytelling premise is full of tension and author Manay navigates a complex interweaving of conflicting motivations among ambitious nobles. There isn't a lot of humor to be found in these pages, but there are fleeting glimpses of joy. Plentiful violence is treated without a lot of explicit detail, so this book is fine for teens. The story is enriched if you know the Renaissance history of the English monarchy.
I recommend this book. The writing is immersive and carefully crafted. It is part of a series.
I’m going to write this without spoilers because well y’all deserve all the gasping moments I had. The characters are easy to love, hate, and root for...the storyline is amazing. I love a book I cannot figure out and I thought I had this one all figured out until the first plot twist. I read the book in three days because I couldn’t put it down. I recommend it to anyone who loves the fantasy genre but it’s a wonderful fantasy book but also has plenty of action, a little mystery, misplaced love, and some romance. It has a little bit of something for everyone. I cannot wait to read the next!
This book is very well written and I enjoyed it very much. I am delighted to have found an author who tells a story so well. The protagonist in this book I absolutely love. She has been through so much, and likely will a whole lot more. But her heart and spirit are so strong. And she is powerful. I am so rooting for her. And for Silas as well. I enjoyed his character as well. Was pleased with what transpired for them and I hope things work out. I could barely put this book down when I had to, and can’t wait for the next. There were a few grammar errors, but nothing to take away from the story.
Many fantasies focus more on the world-building and magic description and the characters lose out but the Hexborn weaves the world-building naturally into the story while giving the characters first place.
I am giving Hexborn 4 stars and not 5 because of the overt use of Henry VIIIs wives, life, and character to provide the external plot. Of course, a few details, including the names, were changed, but not enough to disguise the parallels. The parallels felt (for me) heavy-handed and detracted from the deft hand in the rest of the story.
Five star all around this book was freaking amazing totally didn’t see that end coming and with the curse i wonder what will happen to the new queen.. u wld think after all was done to protect the new queen she wldnt put up the new rules smh but the book omg the book was amazing book i finished the whole thing in one day it was on the longer side to i absolutely love it
I adored Shiloh, she is such a strong and unique character. It's unusual to have a competent and powerful person with a disability in any story let alone a fantasy one and she was a woman! Well done, the world building is brilliant. The characters come alive and you become so invested. I particularly liked how the backstory is given to you in pieces to make the whole story one cohesive unit. 5 huge stars, I'm super excited for book two!
Ms. Manay is a talented writer with the gifts of imagination and creativity. Hexborn is a well-written account of the life of Shiloh who is considered to be unclean. Therefore, a Hexborn. Yet her gifts are quickly recognized and welcomed. It is a long story, but a page turner. The various characters and settings are well described and I never got confused or lost in the storyline. Congratulations.
Powerfully written; richly imagined; immersive reading. A coming of age story full of passions, powerful magic, a concealed past and the skills & hopes of a young girl.
Hexborn by A.M. Manay reads like historical fiction, only better. The days of kings, knights, and brutal warfare is a bloody part of history. That is a fact. The author added a wonderful twist—the use of real and deadly curses to maim and kill enemies while casting wards to protect the casters from harm.
The main character, Shiloh, comes to life as a force to be reckoned with. This outwardly frail gal with her pink hair and eyes is taken in by the king after she is grown and only after she proves her loyalty to the crown. An outcast due to her hexborn bloodline (not all is as it appears) climbs the ladder of success quickly. Life, however, can turn on a dime as Shiloh sees frequently and the heads of queens roll often.
Shiloh begins life only because of the good nature of her uncle who cannot end her life as he just did for her mother. Edmun cares for her and educates Shiloh in the ways of the haves and the have-nots. He also is an outcast and though poor, Edmun strives for a better life for his niece. He teaches her the magic she’ll need to survive long after his failing health takes his last breath.
Hexborn is well-written and the cast is long. It was difficult to follow who was related to whom at times, but the author weaved the story so well that this really didn’t matter. I only noticed a couple of very minor errors that you may not even see. The spelling of the character’s names I assume is consistent with the times and the descriptions make them memorable.
I’ve given you only a minuscule glimpse into the story. It is fast-moving and complex, which shows the competency of the author to weave such an awesome tale. Flashbacks gradually reveal the history of the characters while the story progresses in the present. I enjoyed the story immensely and recommend the book highly. I trust you’ll pick up your copy today for your reading enjoyment.
I’m happy to start 2019 with a review of Hexborn (Hexborn Chronicles Book 1) by A. M. Manay. Read on for my thoughts on this interesting fantasy novel!
Synopsis (from the author): Hexborn. Abomination. Unclean. Young Shiloh knows exactly what she is. She just refuses to let that stop her. Her illness might make her an outcast, but her broken body hides great magical power. And she intends to make the most of it.
Silas, the king’s ruthless fixer, seeks to use that power to preserve the uneasy peace the kingdom has enjoyed since the end of the Siblings’ War. Silas hauls Shiloh from her mountain village to the wizard academy at the king’s court, where magic and political intrigue conspire to create danger around every corner.
Can this child of war save the peace? Or will old sins rise to threaten Shiloh, Silas, and the kingdom of Bryn?
What I liked: Hexborn was an interesting twist on fantasy. Shiloh and Silas are strong characters, while the King is weak. The story follows court intrigue, arranged marriages, and religious persecution, all as a backdrop to Shiloh’s growing power and Silas’s concerns over her power and the threat of her heritage. All told, it’s an excellent read!
What I didn’t like: My only real complaint about Hexborn (Hexborn Chronicles Book 1) was how long it took to explain fully what hexborn meant. Other than that, good stuff!
Overall impression: I enjoyed the book! Great characters, plenty of action, intrigue, and hints of romance kept me turning pages. If you like fantasy, try Hexborn!
I loved Ms. Manay’s November Snow Series. I wondered if a new story line could rival that…yes it could. In fact, it could even surpass it. I found myself drawn deep into "Hexborn". Shiloh grew up considered unclean by the population even though the laws against her kind had disappeared. Shunned, she was being educated to use her strong magic. Dealing with illness and deformity she develops an inner grace and strength. Suddenly when her teacher dies Silas arrives to bring her to the King’s court. Silas seems the perfect villain and I love the relationships she builds in court. Then there were surprises along Shiloh’s journey that she answered with her heart. I admired that about her. The flashbacks were skillfully used so the reader could understand how things developed. What her body lacked, her fortitude made up for. I’m hooked on the magical girl with pink hair and eyes. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. If I could give this more than five stars I would. It may be a YA, but it’s for adults, too. I highly recommend this book!
The author's writing is so well written that it’s over my head. It was only when I got to the fifth chapter that I began to grasp the logic of going back into the past. I'm not crazy about this style of writing but got used to it and started to get into the complex story. Shiloh, the main character had you cheering for her through all her triumphs and failures. She was born to be an outsider but was really something else entirely. Some of the characters went by several names, so keeping up with them was a bit challenging. The book was paced well with many surprises along the way. The ending was puzzling and I think there will be a sequel. I can't wait to get it. I give the author five stars. This book was also featured in the "Raters Not Haters" RRBC Rave Waves Blog Talk Radio Show on 9/22/18.
