Rift - a review by Rosemary Kenny

The time has come for the Colonists to ally with the Terran Alliance representatives under Lyndsey Teague, as the deadly symbiont fuel-source has mutated, [spreading deadly spores and killing all humans who even brush against it] in Michael Campling's fourth adventure in the the colony B series, in the waning hope their former frenemies can contact their superiors back on Earth to send a rescue mission - even if that takes 5 years to arrive!

I like the way Siobhan Connor refuses to give up hope of survival on another part of the planet, now the Wall has been breached and feel her character and determination to triumph against overwhelming odds most inspiring, rather than having the constant battles and one-dimensional characters of so many other 'Lost in Space'-type sci-fi stories.
Her father as Leader of the Colony B residents never fails to display courage and strong leadership and it makes the story more realistic that traitors like Mac are punished and isolated, yet given the chance to redeem themselves by helping achieve the survival of all. Derek and Teague are wild cards and the Connors have to decide whether to trust their judgement in this respect.
The idea of electro-magnetism to repel and kill the symbiont was very cleverly introduced.
I did however feel there are rather too many characters, which can be a little distracting, though (unfortunately) balanced out by the sad death of Ben, Siobhan's partner.
Overall, the book is well-completed in a realistic manner, which leads me to recommend it to fans of apocalyptic 'what if..?' stories and overcoming the odds in an interesting and unusual way, without the tired trope of invading aliens and space tyrants anywhere to be seen.
A great book for your sci-fi bookshelf - grab your copy today and then read the whole series!

Rift is a wonderful adventure in the Colony B series! Adding more fully to the adventures of both the colonists and the team sent to turn the planet into a fuel dump are the characters true to life handling, reactions and emotions in all situations thrown at them. Humanity raw and unedited, realistic grief, anger, jealousy, joy, love, pride, the gamut that each human feels in a lifetime. Michael Campling is an exceptional writer. Colony B series is an example of exceptional Dystopian/Sci-Fi!

The rover team, acheived their mission and came home safely to the celebration of the newly reunited Colony B. No losses on the mission, unfortunately not so for the unsuccessful coup. At least now they have a communication network for within the colony and can communicate with the outsiders too.

Life is settling back into a routine. Things are perhaps a better normal, with the ability of the patrols to communicate and the use of the rover for missions beyond the wall. Siobhan and Ben are part of the regular rover crew assigned to begin mapping nearby terrain. She hopes to find somewhere more habitable than the hill of the colony. Ben believes the hill's ability to repell the Grunge, or symbiote, is due to the magnetic properties of its rock. With science he hopes to find another area with even stronger magnetic force, safer for habitaion. Working together, their attraction grows.

On a routine mission, the crew encounters a new and frightening type of the symbiote, more dangerous than any yet. If this new danger reaches their settlement will the wall be able to stand against it? Will their colony survive?

Dr. Teare and her crew are heading back toward their base camp. Morale is low after receiving the news of abandonment by their company, but she is keeping secrets from more than the settlers. When the trucks come upon the stage two symbiote, disater strikes the team, and it is clear Dr. Teare knows more than she has been telling anyone. Will they be able to recover from their own encounter with the symbiote? Will they make it back to base? Will she share her secrets, with her crew, with the colony?

Someone else has survived. There were two of them at first, one quite brilliant. They found a place of refuge. She made sure he knew how to care for everything, to be safe in this alien place. Now she is gone. It has been so long. It is very hard to be alone, when everyone you counted on is gone. Who is the mysterious survivor? Where did he come from? Where has he ended up?

Rift continues Michael Campling’s Colony B series. As the colonists from the Hill fight against a mutated form of the symbiont. With their home in jeopardy they search for a safer location, while maintaining hope of rescue. Meanwhile, Dr. Teare and her team return to Base Camp.
Once again, another great book in the Colony B series. Engaging and entertaining, with enough suspense to keep the reader wanting more. Unfortunately, let down slightly by a few spelling and grammar errors, which is unusual for this writer.
