“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Have you ever struggled to change your life situation? Have you ever tried to find a solution to a problem of any kind? Do you feel alone without guidance or unprepared to fight for a place in such a competitive world? How to Beat the Dream Stealers: Breaking Barriers to Success by David Mendenhall is a beautiful guide that will assist you to improve yourself in all areas to be as productive as you can.

The author will work on subjects like time management, comfort zone, self-sabotage, self-esteem, procrastination, failure, attitude towards definite goal, awareness and much more. He will help you to develop good psychology while studying strategies of famous and successful people like Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, Bo Bennett, Martin Seligman, Viktor Frankl and Stephen Covey, just to give a couple of names, but you will find a lot more. The author has no scruples in admitting that what he teaches is the result of studying many successful people, he even suggests a book that was the most important book of his life! Do you want to know the name? Dig deep and you will find.

He follows a very simple method to improve yourself: let’s say the author will discuss procrastination, he will share a personal story or other related to the subject, some insight of a person well-known and successful, questions to help you to find in yourself how much this issue may be influencing your life, and how to approach it to reach a solution.

One feature that I loved was the selection of quotes to help you to reflect on ways of living. They are very pertinent and fit perfectly with the subject in discussion. How to live better with other people: “Being tolerant does not mean that I share another one’s belief. But it does mean that I acknowledge another one’s right to believe, and obey, his own conscience.” How to be original: “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Some radical truth: “Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you’re a good person is like expecting a bull not to attack you because you’re a vegetarian.” And the way to mastery: “Sow a thought, reap an act. Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap an eternal destiny.”

There is a plethora of wisdom in this book. It is small, but heavy in value. After reading it, you feel like you have eaten enough for days. This book will be relevant to my life for a long time since the steps are designed to create lasting change and require constant practice and introspection. Another nice feature is that there are many meme-like illustrations throughout the book to help you to memorize each topic discussed.

I have found one misspelled name, but nothing that has marred the beauty of the book. For this, I am glad to rate it 5 out of 5 stars. An overflow of knowledge and experience could be shared, but I finish this review with one of the finest quotes: “We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

I asked for this book through Netgalley but these thoughts and rating are 100% my own
