Crime fiction always my first choice of reading genes, and like most people I like to see the baddies get their comeuppance, but this story blew my mind, to the extent I was rooting for the crooks. I honestly can not ever remember wanting the bad guys to come up trumps before.
Gripped from the first page Ludovic Fear, ex SAS officer is almost at the end of a prison sentence in Scotland's toughest prisons, sent there by who knows who, on trumped - up charges. All he wants is to keep his head down and out of trouble, to hopefully get his young son and estranged wife back on his release. But someone is about to play on his sense of justice and empathy, only to hook him up to something he didn't see coming........they want his expertise.
Crime Lord, commonly known as the Cyclops, started the web of intrigue to ensnare Ludovic into believing his family will suffer if he refuses to help, by using his military training and jumping to the Cyclops tune he's truly hooked. This storyline is full of twists and turns, moments of hold your breath and gasps, you can't see the wood for the tree's until it smacks you in the face. Cleverly woven and fantastic characters bring you to see into the depths of these so called lawbreakers and it isn't just lawlessness for the sake of it, that makes the impression in your head, the reasoning behind it all, put the crooks out in front!
There's a little romance along the way, with some violence and gore pertaining to the storyline, that is to be expected. Brilliant dialogue throughout had me chuckling in parts. The characters are well thought out, some more complex until you suss them out, but they all seem to grab your imagination one way or another, even the crooked policemen!
I honestly can't recommend this book highly enough, it's different, intriguing and mind grabbing and has you rooting for the wrong side. The protagonist is fabulous, his thoughts touching your very soul! I loved it, just glad to see Ludovic Fear will be back next year.......thankfully!
I've been slightly generous with a 3 - I wanted to like this book since I was gently accosted in WH Smith by the author - apparently I look like someone who would enjoy crime novels. He wasn't wrong. It's also set in the city where I live and there is something quite enjoyable about reading about locations (and people) you know! But it wasn't earth-shattering, the writing was a bit clumsy, the characters super-clichés, and there were several things that the editor should have picked up which I found irritating. Having said that the story rattled along and I did find myself wanting to know what happened next, hence the 3!
