Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis...They happen all the time, and when they do, people wonder: What about the Big One? Truth is, no one alive has ever seen a real Big One - not since Toba erupted 75,000 years ago, and created a bottleneck in human evolution. Then there's the biggest of them all: Yellowstone, where the Monster Under the Ground has been biding its time for 640,000 years...
What if it erupted tomorrow? How would humanity and human society react? How would they survive?
Pressure is that story, and Fall is just the beginning.
The author is a 14 year veteran of the US Coast Guard. He's currently living in Las Vegas, where he's almost done with his sixth novel, Zombies of Infamy.
Apocalypse in the western half of the United States and Canada. Thomson has created a scenario and characters who interest us, even the evil and the stupid. The story is mostly set in Nevada where all the main characters improbably meet up with each other in the middle of nowhere. The author's skill is in managing to carry it off. The only thing I could think of was that I suppose there aren't many roads in Nevada. Travel in a certain direction and you're bound to meet up with someone you know. What brought the book down from 5 stars was the author's venting of his pet peeves: politicians and all US presidents, except Obama, were terrible for the country. Needless to say, I disagree. Hope any sequel avoids the pitfall of venting about politics. Other than that it was a great read.
The author needs to spend more time with character development.
There were a ridiculous amount of coincidences which occurred that bring everyone together.
There was WAY too much time spent on the fake religious zealot, when that time could have been better spent on main character development. To be honest, I rolled my eyes & skimmed through most of that guy. He was just too over the top.
The sleazy volcanologist who liked to "pet" his interns, another eyeroll.
The bad guy, released from jail, with, of course, NO ONE the wiser, who just happens to run across the main characters love interest, eyeroll. It was just an awful lot of trope, when I wanted to hear more about the action and the characters survival.
I used to live about 20 minutes outside Yellowstone and went often. I knew about the super volcano. But didn’t give it a thought. But now....I wonder. I’d still go back. This is a new to me author. I gave it a go and glad I did. Pulled me in and I read way to late. I had favorite characters, like usual for me. But some...grrrr. There were a few editing issues but so few and far between. Just bring it up for the ones wanting to know about them. I highly recommend this book.
Really enjoyed this. Earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions. The Yellowstone caldera. The storylines are interesting, the characters too, and I'm looking forward to the next book.
Once again Jeff Thomson has written a book with characters you can actually love, hate, or just like. The plot is interesting and well written and I can't wait for the next book in the series. If you like his Zombies In Paradise, this book's for you.
