“Don’t worry,” Vinny says with a little grin. There’s a guy running towards us with a microphone, and Vinny takes it. “Yeah, I’m a gringo,” he says proudly. It startles the crowd and I hear several of them start to laugh. “And I admit, I’m a bit skinny, too. But I’m not ‘just anyone.’” He takes his hat off, having slipped his mask on, and hands the mic to Papa before lighting up.
“Peligro de Incendio?” the fighter says, looking stunned. “Nuestra princesa is dating Peligro de Incendio!” he announces to the crowd.
“Peli… pelican de what?” Vinny asks me. Unfortunately for him, Papa’s holding the mic close enough to pick it up. I can’t reply, though, because I’m too busy roaring with laughter.
“Fire Hazard, mijo. It means Fire Hazard,” Papa says, sounding close to laughter, himself.
“Oh,” he says.
“Pel—pelican!” I gasp out, almost falling out of my chair. It was ABSOLUTELY worth coming today!
“Everyone, give a round of applause to our newest super hero, Pelican de Incendio!” the luchador says, earning cheers and laughter from all around.
“I’m never going to live that down, am I?” Vinny asks. Papa pats him on the back in a consolidating manner, but he looks way too close to laughter for it to work.
Hey. This is volume twenty-freakin'-one of this series. By now? You know if you like it or not.
Me? I love it. I love the characters. I love their powers. I love their smart mouths. I love their insecurities. I love their chosen family. I love their school. I love the way they cling to each other through thick and thin. I love that, even when the stakes are high, you know that Ol' R. J. is going to bring it all together into a happy ending.
I love this world, and these characters, and if R. J. chooses to write another eighty, I'll be there shellin' out the greenbacks for every single one of 'em.
I liked the earlier books, but newer books are severely lacking in any kind of punch. The same themes keep popping up and it's getting more than a little long in the tooth. I spent the majority of this book waiting for it to end.
Awkward teenager love -- already done in nearly every other book.
Unrealistic situations. I.e. children made responsible for adults.
Telling and not showing -- Burnout being considered as a future Hall leader despite having a history of poor decisions and she's overly emotional which causes her to act before she thinks. Nothing in that character's history leads me to believe what the narrative is selling.
The hyper-focus on family is also getting VERY old. Everyone is somehow related to everyone else, even if it's through adoption.
I know the bulk of the villains are in the "game", but ALL of them act like cuddly teddy bears and oversized children.
A very nice addition to one of my favorite series. When I want to feel good these are the books I go back to again and again. My whole family looks forward to these Cape High books. This book drove the plot forward quite a bit and gave me lots of background material with many of my favorite characters - although it centers on South so we don't see a lot of them, (Central students and adults), at all. However, the cast of characters is so large I understand that you can't visit all of them in every book. Anyway, loved it! Keep them coming, and I will keep buying them.
Loved it!! It takes a really creative author to be able to have a series this long without it becoming repetitive. I don't know how she doesn't burn out writing these amazing books (see what I did there, lol). Every time you think you know a character she will surprise you and that's what happens here. I loved it and as always am looking to the next.
As always it was a fun read and it was over to quickly since I couldn't put it down. I e joyed getting to know the south branch characters better. Looking forward to seeing more of them.
As always a fun book for the young or young at heart
I am not the target audience for these books but they are fun and I like the characters and world she has built I enjoy reading them for lunch at work and am always happy to see a new one available. Give them a try and get them to your older grade school kids or early Jr high kids for a fun read they are fun enough that you and your kids will both like them and you both will have fun talking about them. Back when I worked in bookstores in the 80s and 90s I would have recommended them and the series. This goes for all of the books in the series so far.
Another book featuring Cape High South. The series is really growing in the size of it's cast and scope. It had been a while since I read this last time, and I felt that rereading it. A lot happens in this book, and I feel like the fun humor has started taking a backseat to a more serious plot, which is disappointing. The Deadly Darlin's do make their appearances and bring their humor with them, and I'm glad we got to see a battle between them and the Nemeses.
