Apocalypse
Harry Starke Book 13
By Blair Howard

Harry Starke is back in Book 13 of the series by Blair Howard and he is back in full-strength. I stopped reading this series for awhile as I was bored with the same type of plot: Harry gets a case, Harry gets involved, Harry solves the case. In Apocalypse Harry is faced with problems unlike any he has faced before.
The recurrence of Harry’s nemesis, Shady Tree, ties this story with previous ones but you don’t have to had read any of the previous novels to enjoy this one. (Though I highly recommend you start with Book 1 and work your way through the series. It will make for a more enjoyable read of each story.)
In this story, Mr. Howard kept me reading. At no time did I want to skim or hurry through any of the story line. I wanted to know everything Harry was facing and how he was going to handle it. And, as in all the past books, he left me eager to find out what is coming next.
If you have read past Harry books then be sure to add this one to your collection. If you have never read any of Blair Howard’s book, then get started now.

I gave this book five stars because the author’s character development has continued, improved, and deepened over the course of these 13 books (one more to go in the series). I really enjoyed the author’s note at the end of the book, too. He mentioned how his readers constantly say, “Harry Starke is no Jack Reacher.” I don’t know why, but that made me laugh. Probably because the same thought occurred to me (sorry, Mr. Howard!).

It’s true: Harry Starke is no Jack Reacher. But then neither is Harry Bosch or any one of a dozen other such characters. The real question is would you want them to be? I think not. Jack Reacher stands in a class of his own. But so does Harry Starke. Over the course of these 13 books, the author has done a marvelous job bringing Harry Starke to life. And a full life it is! Starke laughs and loves and even pranks like none other. He watches over his own, protectively, lovingly, and is compassionate. He’s super rich, which isn’t all that endearing to me, but it is fun to get an idea of what life would be like with all that money. He’s brilliant at pretty much every task he undertakes, intelligent, and has a smart mouth that has made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions.

The author, Mr. Howard, has generously made his Harry Starke series available for free on Kindle (lender’s library). That was very kind. I would not have been able to enjoy these books otherwise and would have missed out on some fascinating, fast-paced, crime detection novels that were perfect reading for the current shelter-in-place COVID-19 thing we got going on right now.

Give Starke a chance, and I think you’ll be happy and delighted that you did. He really does grow on you!

Enjoyable thriller and entertaining fun read!
This is the 13th Harry Starke novel and it doesn’t disappoint and is as easy going as you could want yet still well written and highly entertaining. You can’t but help enjoy Harry and his detective team.
The story starts with an assassination and a strange request from past ex colleague now a special agent with the FBI called Parker. Unwillingly he is drawn into a search from another person from his past that appears to be involved with the hit and what can only be termed as a Apocalypse cantered in his own town of Chattanooga. Harry agrees in principal to assist only by finding Lester “Shady” Tree only Harry’s wife Amanda who is nine months pregnant and not happy Harry has agreed to assist.
The team and some of his friends locate Shady but things soon go from bad to worse and Harry and his team can’t back down and have to take on the terrorists themselves as they try to locate a one half kiloton bomb! Then it is a race against time as to where they can put this bomb with only minutes to go....
It doesn’t end there either. There is a final twist and nerve racking ending that keeps you taught and apprehensive. A Great read and one I read in one go without putting it down.

"One, two, three - out you go."
Harry's office (his sanctum of sanctums) is invaded by an FBI agent demanding he finds an old nemesis, 'Shady' Tree who, Agent Packer claims, murdered one of their undercover men - and he has a grainy photo to prove it. But Harry doesn't believe him. Shady might be a nasty character but not a killer. Then the agent spins a tale about terrorist activity and a missing nuclear weapon, so Harry and his team agree to find Tree but nothing more, after all, Harry is about to become a father any time now.

This story is a full on thriller with Harry Starke's emotions ramped right up to bring out the nastiest of his nature. Narrator, Tom Lennon, fully assumes Harry's personality in this already well characterised first person relating of the story, further infusing him with a very believable persona as well as also delivering distinctive voices for everyone else. A good performance.

Although pushing into the need for suspension of disbelief at times, there is a feel of reality for much of the book, especially in the interaction between players.
An enjoyable, gritty thriller which stands alone despite being book 13 in a series.

Harry crosses the line

Harry ran Lester 'Shady' Tree out of town and instructed him not to return. Shady returned.
Harry gave him a manicure & he wanted revenge.
Harry is in danger, as is nine month pregnant Amanda. Shady knows she is Harry's weakness, so the best way to hurt Harry is to hurt Amanda.
Did it go too far, was she just supposed to be scared? Who knows?
Who would think a woman about to give birth fair game? Shady by name, evil by nature. He sends Duvon, his associate to perform the task. Amanda is unconscious and critical, their daughter, Jade is born by cesarean and Harry's stepmum, Rose takes her home. Harry is a wreck, a single minded one, and with a little help from a couple of loyal friends, Duvon takes a dip in the nuclear power heated lake, 450 feet deep.
I've left out the good bits, so you can enjoy them as much as I did. Happy reading.
P. S. A touch of the Jack Reacher, but Harry has close family and is not Reacher. Both are great characters in their own environment.

This is quite a departure from the previous books in this series, it is a full-blown thriller, rather than a mystery. It's still very well written, with a lot of characters from previous books making an appearance, but for me it was just a bit over the top and the plot verges on the unbelievable (although it has to be said, no more so than a lot of other mainstream thrillers).
I do think that the character of 'Shady' is great, and I can see him making another appearance in this series as a nemesis for Harry.
I know that the author was trying something different in response to comments that Harry was 'no Jack Reacher' and he set out to write a story where Harry is a all-action hero, he certainly succeeded in that, the story really flies along and keeps you engrossed, but as far as I am concerned I prefer the 'normal' Harry, who likes to use his brains, rather than brawn to solve his cases.
I received an ARC of the book but this review is honest and voluntarily written.

APOCALYPSE by Blair Howard is another in this author’s series featuring Harry Starke and company, but this book is a thriller and very effectively done. I have liked each of this primary character’s stories and this one was no exception. In it a shady character Harry has known for years is involved with a Middle Eastern group intent on terrorist activity at different locations in the United States. The place that involves Harry is Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The group of terrorists has a plan and the means for setting off a nuclear bomb. Harry, a successful private investigator and former policeman, is asked by an old acquaintance to help the government stop this group, save thousands of innocent lives, and his efforts at doing so are an intense race against time.

Harry’s wife Amanda is pregnant with their first child and close to delivering the precious baby in just a few days. The way Amanda fits into this story adds to the tension and intrigue. Another job well done, Mr. Howard!

Author Blair Howard is back with Harry Starke. If you've read any of the Harry Starke novels, you know Harry is an ex police officer, sometimes "retired" private investigator with a very beautiful and pregnant wife, Amanda. Harry comes with all of his friends/associates that we've come to know and love, and a few we've learned to hate. In this 13th novel you will go up and down with Harry as he fights his inner demons and some old fiends from his past, as always trying to keep his future open. A few surprises in this one, not your typical Harry Stark mystery, more of a Harry Stark Thriller. Come along for the ride, you won't be disappointed. One of the nice things about the Harry Starke series, even if you haven't read all of the books, you get enough back ground throughout each one to figure out who is who. As an ARC reader for author Blair Howard, I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This 13th book in the series keeps you on your toes all the way through. Harry and his team are once again putting their lives on the line. The difference this time is it is to save the entire city. A terrorist group is planning to bomb the nuclear plant, or are they? One of Harry's old school mates is now in the FBI, and wants Harry to help him find an old nemesis Shady Tree. Now the one issue is Harry really hates this guy and in no way wants to help him at all, and he did promise Amanda. Amanda is just about ready to deliver their baby and makes Harry swear not to put himself in danger again. Does Harry listen of course not. His old enemy Shady Tree has helped terrorists into the country and also the backpack nuclear bomb. Harry must find Shady and find out where they plan to deploy this powerful nuclear device. The end will leave you hanging on eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. I know I am

Harry Starke Older and Wiser!

Yet another great book (number 13) in the Harry Starke Stand-alone series. With his wife about to give birth Harry is contacted by an old college friend and his life goes to hell in a handcart. An old adversary rears his ugly head in a most extreme way and Harry’s new life is threatened in a way he could never have imagined. Fortunately he’s surrounded by good friends and employees. They work together to neutralise the threat successfully but all is not well when his wife is badly injured. Revenge is an ugly word but it’s what Harry needs right now.
Wow what a read. Blair Howard has done it again another riveting read. Couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Now onto book 14. How could I miss it? I love the series including Harry Starke and Kate Gazzara.

Apocalypse starts with an assassination that must take place before the murdered man meets with his handler. The next afternoon Harry walks in to his office to find out that FBI agent Carl Parker is in his actual office, sitting in Harry's chair, behind Harry's desk. They have a history and needles to say, Harry is pissed. Carl wants Harry to find Shady Tree because they think he's involved with terrorists. He'll find Shady Tree alright, but then he's done. Or so he says... Oh, this book is a good one! It's more of a thriller than Harry's usual mystery solving as a private investigator. Excellent plot along with great characters we've come to love or hate. Whatch out terrorists, Harry is coming!

In Apocalypse by Blair Howard, Harry Starke gets visited by an FBI agent former friend friend who tries to enlist Starke’s assistant. Intel has shown that a group of Iranian terrorists have gotten hold of a backpack nuclear bomb. Surveillance indicated that Harry’s old enemy, Shady Tree, executed the one member of the Iranian group who was going to report to the FBI. The agent wants Starke to locate Shady and help stop the nuclear threat, which he thinks is targeting a nuclear power plant. But with Starke’s wife, Amanda, due to give birth to their first child any day now, Starke hesitates to get too involved.

Revenge

A different type of story for Harry and friends. It is not really a mystery but more of stop the action before the world ends. You have terrorist group who want to cause damage to Chattanooga and Harry saves the day with help from friends.
Shady Tree is the recurring bad guy and with the twists and turns you have a different type of story for Harry. It is well written BUT not my type of story for Harry. I gave it a five but the ending is a bit of a cliff hanger. I hope the next book is typical Harry Starke book as I enjoy the other books better than this one.
Do I recommend it not really because it is not really a Harry Starke mystery that I came to enjoy based on the previous 12 books.

Apocalypse takes the action and the turns it up a notch when Harry Starke finds himself on a race against time looking for an old enemy to stop a nuclear bomb. The book is really intense and good, though perhaps a bit far fetched at times. I have to wonder how things will resolve themselves after the ending of the book as it leaves some pretty major loose ends. I find Harry has gotten much more palatable since he settled down.

The narrator does a good job with the books, and has a rough detective like voice. I feel like he sounds a little old for the character, but that's a matter of personal preference.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Apocalypse is the best one yet!!!! I couldn't put it down.

Harry is on the verge of becoming a father. An old friend draws him into a case he cannot refuse, stopping terrorists from setting off an atomic bomb somewhere in Nashville. He promised his wife Amanda, that he would leave the dangerous stuff to his partners and employees of his very successful private investigating company. But knowing that there is a bomb in Nashville capable of killing thousands of people, he had to get involved.

With time running out Harry has to find the bomb before it is set off. In getting his nemesis to reveal what he knows forces Harry to do things he never thought he could. As he struggles internally about lying to his wife and the extent he had to go to get the information, he continues is search for the bomb and the intended target.

While people are starting to compare Harry with the Jack Reacher character( I'm a big fan of both) I think it is a stretch to make theses two characters out to be the same. The only similarities I see are their need to help others, usually the underdog in the situation. I guess if you sent Reacher to charm school they would have more in common but Reacher is Reacher and Harry is smooth. I wouldn't want them any other way.

This story has Harry going against his nemesis Lester"Shady" Tree once again. Harry is asked by a former collegiate friend to help with locating a terrorist group who are suspected might release a nuclear bomb. The FBI wants Harry to find Shady because they believe he is working with the terrorist. Amanda, Harry's wife, thinks Harry is getting into too many situations where he might be. Harry told her that he only agreed to find Shady and that was it.

Things didn't work out the way Harry thought and he wound up being a lot more involved that he wanted.

To learn what Harry wound up doing and how Amanda was impacted, then you need to read this book. It is well worth your time.

Apocalypse (The Harry Starke Novels Book 13)., my forty-fourth read from author Blair Howard. Well-written and enjoyable, edge-of-your-seat detective fiction, thoroughly entertaining! I always look forward to the next work from Howard. A Blair Howard book is like a visit from an old detective friend. I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." Tom Lennon’s excellent narration to the enjoyment of an excellent book. The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Next up is Aftermath (The Harry Starke Novels Book 14). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Blair Howard gives us a change of pace in his harry Starke series. This is a true thriller that includes many of the characters from the previous books. It is clearly part of the overall story arc even if the style is a little different.

Blair doesn't sacrifice his attention to detail and character development even as he gives us a really fast-paced effort to thwart a terrorist plot. Harry is about to become a father and weighs his responsibilities to Anna and his unborn child vis-a-vis saving thousands of lives.

This is a quick and enjoyable read.

"All About Saving America"

This is a very threatening, scary thriller by a very popular author who knows how to intrigue his readers. In this exciting novel, a tactical nuclear weapon is missing in the Middle East. It's believed to have been smuggled into the United States by a small terrorist group. The FBI suspects the Sequoya nuclear plant is the target. Harry Starke is tasked with the assignment with very limited time. This is a tough task for Harry but spellbinding for readers. You'll not want to put it down. It's a nail biter, that's for sure!

My heart rate is still elevated, what a thriller! The storyline never let’s up and the characters are raring to go face harm at every turn.

Harry is contacted by an acquaintance in the FBI, seeming his help to track down terroists with a nuclear bomb. Harry promises his very pregnant wife he will not get involved beyond connecting the FBI except to track down the man helping the terrorists. Of course he jumps into the fray with both feet.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

Apocalypse is one of many volumes in the Harry Starke series. This scenario involves Harry, his arch enemy Shady Tree, and missing backpack nuclear devices. The nuclear devices are in the Middle East and a nuclear power plant appears to be the target. Harry is convinced to go after Shady, find the devices, and stop Whatever plans are in place. No problem right? Seems to be a typical Harry Starke adventure. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

I've read the first 3 books in the Harry Starke series, and have been a fan ever since!
This is Book 13, and I'm not stopping now! ;)

Love Harry's character, everything you'd want - very complex man :)
Action packed series, great writing, and love Tom Lennon's narration - spot on!

This is one that you'll read (or listen to) straight through after starting.. you won't want to put it down.
Highly recommended :)

Another excellent Harry Starke book. I feel this one is emotionally packed with all the twists and turns Mr. Howard is known for. I especially liked the Shady Tree segments and wonder how he will handle him in the upcoming novels. There has to be a standoff somewhere in the future. I think this is the best of the series so far, but then I say that with each book that follows the last. Nice job. I listened to this as an audiobook which makes it all the more enjoyable with the inflections and excitement of the moment.

Please tell Harry that PTSD is not limited to military. He needs to get help!!! Everybody wants Harry’s help. But, when push comes to shove they are there for themselves only. I realize this is a bit of an over statement. But, look at Greg, and Chief Johnston, and the Sheriff’s Department, and … Well, you get the idea. Good thing he had Sol and Jimmy. I enjoyed the story and recommend the book.

Apocalypse is gritty thriller that builds to an incredible ending. Although this book is the thirteenth Harry Starke novel it can be read as a stand-alone. In a race against time Harry Starke and his team need to do anything and everything they can, lives depend on them. This is an action thriller rather than a mystery and it is definitely explosive. I have to read the next book in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.

This book was a bit different from the other Harry Starke novels. Part of that is due to Harry making concessions to Amanda as to how much trouble he will allow himself to get into since he is due to become a father shortly. Then this book was more of a thriller than a mystery and I'm just a little more partial to mysteries. There were the usual twists and turns in the storyline but some parts just were a little out there. I do still recommend reading the book if you are a Harry Starke fan.

A Change of Pace

A bit of a change of pace for Harry with suspenseful scenes that make you hold your breath. However not my favorite book of the series.

I lost track of the amount of space devoted to descriptions of weapons being loaded and unloaded. These did nothing to advance the story.

Will Harry and Shady have a final showdown? Will Amanda recover? What about baby Jade? Stay tuned.

Tense, Edge of Your Seat, Non-stop Action!

This was literally a book I couldn't put down! To say the threat of a nuke being donated in a downtown area that would take out a major part of the nation's electrical grid as well as kill untold thousands is a thriller is to under sell the plot. That Harry Starke is up to the task is gratifying. That his wife and unborn child's life is threatened is unthinkable and cannot, will not stand! Not with Harry on the job.

I enjoyed this book much more than Calypso. The narrator seems to have found a good pace for telling the story. This book was full of action, good vs evil, a bomb, and plenty of shooting. It's more of an adventure novel than a mystery novel. The characters are well developed and some characters from previous novels reappear in this story. I liked the ending and the justice served. Good book.
