This is part one of a two book story. **WARNING** It ends in a cliffhanger. Samuel Valentine is one of the country’s most prolific litigators and manages a successful law firm. His priorities are growing his business, building a legacy and taking care of his family. His life was closed off from people outside his circle until a case forces him to call on the help of an outsider. Averie Patterson excelled in law school, was granted a clerkship with a Supreme Court Justice then opened her own law firm. She is passionate about helping women overcome legal obstacles. Averie is put into the path of the one person who doesn’t want her help. Can they co-exist? This is part one of a two book story. **WARNING** It ends in a cliffhanger.
Wow, what a ride. When I read in the synopsis that the book ended in a cliffhanger, it messed with my head. Especially towards the end. This was a love story, but in my opinion, it didn't start as a love story. It was about 2 lawyers working their tushies off on a case. Samuel needed Averie's help and the way he relinquished power and control to her was awesome. I love that he didn't let his ego or pride or anything toxic to get in the way of that. Averie came through and did her thing. She exuded power, confidence and black girl magic. For Samuel, it was power, money, a little bit of BDE, grown man s#!+ and HBCU educated. Samuel was into Averie, (though I had hoped for more chemistry between them) but, he had those feelings under control until they finished working the case, which I thought was really smart. The author didn't tell us their age, (I like to know my character's age) but just the way they behaved, they seemed like they were more on the older, mature side. If my math is right, Samuel was in his mid to late 40's. But they were super cute. I love how the author incorporated Faith and God in the story. It was nicely done. I also loved the family dynamic in the story. Though I haven't read part 2 of this story, I would recommend this book, it flowed nicely. However, it did take a while to get to the romance portion of it. Also, stay focus cause there are tons of supportive characters. Now, off to book 2 to find out WTF is going!!
Bailey West is by far becoming one of my favorite writers! The Bluette Brothers Series is a favorite and I have read it several times. I didn’t think she could top it but she definitely has. Can I first just say that El is book bae?! He had so many reasons why he could have been bitter and underachieving but he wasn’t. He was a caring and compassionate soul who wanted to see all people succeed and didn’t hold their past against them. Averie is his spirit animal and soul mate. She is so him in female form. I love her toughness but not to the point of not allowing her man to be a man.
Now the rollercoaster ride of events in this book is crazy. El finding his biological dad in the most unconventional of places, Roc’s trial, the sabotage at Averie’s firm, the potential power move for the Stars by El to the shooting at the courthouse, you are on the edge of your seat the entire time. The depth of these new characters of Bailey’s is so vivid, it is almost like you know them. Can I just say that I love Keeva and Kenzie?! They are everything!
Now this ending....Bailey, why would you do us like that?! Now I can’t wait for part two! Side note: I almost had a heart attack until I got to the last page.
This two part series focuses on Samuel and Averie, two of the top litigators in the country. Samuel needs Averie’s help on a case involving his brother and sister in law. While working closely on the case the two fall in love.
The good: I loved Samuel’s backstory and the foundation the author sets by showing you how he was falsely accused of a crime and his experience in prison. His rise from being exonerated and becoming one of the the top lawyers and businessmen in the country.
The bad: the bad part for me was Averie getting mad over unnecessary things. We also got a touch of backstory but the author wasn’t as in depth as Samuel’s so you don’t know why she overacts to simple things like him paying for a date. I also didn’t understand the pressure from her mom to get married and have kids compared to her older sister who was married but had no kids. There wasn’t even talk of why her sister didn’t have kids when the pressure seemed to be solely placed on her.
One thing that is small but was irritating because it comes up in the second book with no explanation. We have no idea how old she is, your left to guess based on small information given. We know how old Samuel and his older sister are but for some reason Averie is left very vague.
The plot: since this is a two part book the first book focuses mainly on establishing the characters. There’s a mystery of who done it but it’s obvious who actually did it. The book ends on a cliffhanger and it was the type I absolutely hate because I’ve seen it done in many books to shock the reader. I did enjoy the legal workings of Averie solving his brothers case.
Bailey West has become one of my go to authors for her ability to combine stories of faith and redemption with romance. Her stories are not the clean Christian stories (these characters have plenty of sex) but their honest about their internal flaws and their faith. Redemption has been a running theme in her stories and you can see the transformation of Samuel from a man without a vision to a successful businessman.
Serving Time by Bailey West is about litigators Samuel Valentine and Averie Patterson. This is quite a story, from the very first page I was drawn in. Samuel’s law practice wants to hire Averie for a special case, they do not start off on the right page. However as the begin to work together on the case, the chemistry between Samuel and Averie is very evident! It was great to see two hardworking, headstrong individuals figure it out as a couple. Samuel is very mannish but he doesn’t try to control Averie, it’s the perfect balance. It was also a plus to see high powered women not being told to lower her standards, Averie owns her own law office and is building it on her own merit. Samuel’s backstory is so intriguing, I am glad that he became well accomplished despite what he experienced. The story has a few twists and turns, I’m excited to read part two. Yes, this story ends on a big cliffhanger!
This was a good story but I felt there was a lot to be desired with the writing style. I felt that the book sort of just told me what happened instead of letting me feel like I was part of it or was witnessing it. Not a lot of description, a lot of jumping scenes. But it was a good story premise and was entertaining.
Bailey be knowing what to write. Whew!!! This book had me going. That ending was just wow. It is always great to see characters from her other books in this. I love how they all are connected and friends. I need part 2 like yesterday.
There's nothing like a Bailey West novel. Reading your books pull at your heart while speaking to your spirit. Averie and Samuel were one of the best power couples to evolve in a book. Their chemistry and drive was just perfect. Looking forward to seeing their story play out.
I really liked this story because it touches on real and quite current issues. Both El and Averie are tough with strong personalities that blend very well, who fight for injustices and inequalities that they have experienced firsthand. Together they give great strength to history and each struggle they must face to achieve a better world for themselves and their loved ones.
Loved how the love story between El & Averie developed. Also enjoyed the law background while not getting bogged down in lots of complicated legal lingo. This story has love, sex, mystery, suspense, drama & a cliffhanger. Can’t wait to see what happens in Book 2 & 3! Thank you Bailey West!
Serving Time is a solid book and I enjoyed reading it very much. One of the things I really appreciate in contemporary romance, is when the author puts in the time to allow the reader to get to know the characters in the book. I can't really dive in, appreciate and root for a relationship if I don't like the characters, and I can't like the characters if I don't really know who they are. A lot of times, authors throw readers into a book and we never get to know who the characters are outside of who they are when they are with their love interest.
Bailey West didn't do that with this novel. We get to know Averie and Samuel very thoroughly. We get to see them work and spend time with their family and for a large part (half) of the book, they keep things very professional which allows for the tension and attraction to build between them and makes the relationship when it finally happens, that much more authentic and rewarding.
The only thing I have to say, that put me off just a little, was the fact that after Averie and Samuel did finally get together, all of the focus that was put on them as individuals and seeing them be lawyers, work cases, manage their firms, hang out with their friends, etc. All of that took a MAJOR backseat, which isn't necessarly needed or wanted. I would have loved to continue to witness all of those things that happened with the characters prior to them getting together, with the added bonus of feels and FEELS between them.
All in all, very enjoyable read. Crazy ending. I'm excited for the next book....hopefully, I don't have to wait too long for it to be released!
OMG ! That’s all I can say...well not really This story is amazing As much as I was impressed with Everything about Samuel Valentine , Averie Patterson won my heart being an example of a professional Black woman who wouldn’t compromise who she was to achieve her life goals. When she first met Samuel it was like throwing gasoline on an open flame and I don’t mean that in a good way. I really thought oh these two alpha personalities will never make a love connection. The love story that developed between them was better than any I have read. And believe me during this year of pandemic I have read some love stories ☺️
I know that when deciding to start this series there was a notice that this was book would end with a cliff hanger 😏😅. When I got to the last page of this story all I could do was scream OMG!!!Then I started laughing thinking okay I have to virtual appointments this morning and as soon as I’m finished I have to start the second book in this series. 😂😂 After reading five of her books over the last six days Ms. Bailey West , has become my new favorite Author ❤️
This was a very interesting start. The coincidence of who El’s cell mate end up being was unrealistic but the author made it work.
I really like Averie. She wasn’t with the shits. Loved the way she stood up to El in the beginning. Her mom was getting on my nerves. I hate people who acted like their daughters or women were incomplete or some how less than if they didn’t have a man in their life. As a natural, I resent that her mom tried to push the wig on her. I see nothing wrong with wearing them, but can’t stand when people act like that makes you look better. And she needs to do it for a man. Why would they want her with a man that doesn’t check for her with her preferred hair style of choice. Ok I’ll come off my soapbox. At least for now.
I like how averie and samuels relationship has been building organically, but that sitch with Ted was foul.
I don’t like princess. I know she’s a child but 🤷🏾♀️
I love the way the families bonded. Glad Averie and her mom had that talk bc moms was working my last nerve.
This book made it absolutely difficult to catch your breath. I was not expecting the drama so soon, I thought for sure that I was safe with Bailey and that she would do the formulaic build-up but that was a sucker's bet on my part, she took the reader "there" from start to finish. The shoe dropped on the first page and the story that ensued sucked you into a whirlwind of injustice, secrets, ego, brokenness, restoration, second chances, redemption, passion, debauchery, tragedy, love, and so much more!
So many layers, so many awesome secondary characters and subplots but make no mistake that the fire that El and Averie kindled was top priority. Bailey West paced the heck out of their romance and it was genius that she did so because by the time it went down, their mutual attraction was undeniable. There were no qualms or misgivings just hiked skirts and...well let me leave it there. Lol. This story packed a mighty punch with more than enough to savor while we wait for book 2. Read this one today, you will not be sorry!
I knew it was going to be great. Just by the description it caught my whole attention. I waited for months to read it because it ends on a cliffhanger. I didn’t want to read it until the second book came out so I can pick it up right after. Unfortunately l, I couldn’t wait anymore and now have to wait for the second book. This book was more than I could’ve hoped for. The relationship between Vee and El made me so happy, especially the way the relationship blossomed. I knew a ball would drop but I wasn’t expecting that, I just knew I needed them to finally get it together. I cannot wait for this second book to come out so I know how the story ends. I think they are my favorite Bailey couple. She also tied her other characters in which I loved because I got a small update and was able to link all the characters together. Wonderfully written
Omg this was my first read by this author and baby when I say de blow me out the water with this book. It was straight fire 🔥 from start to finish. It kept my attention so much I couldn’t put it down I fell asleep with the kindle in my hand and woke up just to finish. The way Samuel aka El started off his life was crazy meeting his father and all that good stuff was simply crazy. Samuel and Averie were a team to be reckoned with because trust me baby those two were it. All I can say is the ending shocked the hell out of me brought tears to my eyes. Gotta read the next part to see what happens. Trust me this book will change the way you fell about certain things love will definitely set you free and all your desires will come to face you no matter who you are. I hope you read this book because I definitely feel in love with this authors work from this one book. This is definitely a 5+ star banger.
Ms. Bailey i absolutely love your style of writing. The interactions with the people. The stories flow very well. I’d definitely recommend this book. Very funny. The back stories are interesting. Fresh Characters. I wanted to know about everyone. I read a ton of books and I don’t feel that I’ve met them before. Especially El. He’s different. How the book began I’d never would’ve imaged this is where it would lead. So happy i found these characters.
That crap you pull with the “funeral” almost gave me a heart attack . I nearly stopped reading right then. I couldn’t allow “a book” to kill my spirit. Zane did that to me a while back, messed me up for nearly a Month!!! I felt like i lost a loved one. Damn you scared the hell out of me. Whew Anyway I’m anxiously waiting for part two.
I'm rediscovering the appeal of African American romance and I'm ecstatic that Ms. West is an author that my Kindle recommended! I long fell out of love AA books because they followed the same pattern, good black man, stripper, or hood chick that's a drug dealer or thief on the come up. No meaning behind them just drugs, sex, death, thievery. How refreshing to discover a story where the hero had the hardships but did a n entire 360. Samuel is that man and he has an intelligent, humble, hardworking woman by his side with Averie. Not only are they powerful together but powerful in their own right. This alpha man practice what he preaches! He is all about saving other black men from the streets and assisting them on staying on the straight and narrow. Securing their futures. I enjoyed every page of this book and already clicked for book 2!
First off, the character development is on point. We know these people, we are invested in El and Vee!!!! Who doesn't love a power couple who gives back to The community? El is The buttoned up, consummate businessman with a hint on savage that will knock another out ( oooh, sexy). And Vee can code switch with best of them (Becky or neck rolling Kesha, who you want). The supporting characters are wonderful and entertaining. While I knew this would be a cliffhanger, I am so excited for the suspense!!!! This story definitely entertains as it is the perfect blend of sexy, faith, humor, and suspense. This is definitely another win for Bailey West!!!! Can't wait for part 2!!!
This story is good and intriguing. It held my attention from the start. I love the first meeting between Samuel and Averie. He may have commanded attention, but she did too. Vee stood her grounds and didn't let anyone intimidate her. Samuel met a woman in Vee who had the same drive and mentality as his. You couldn't debt their attraction and chemistry, so I was glad when they gave into their feelings. I definitely wasn't expecting that ending, so I will be in tune for book two. It so much mystery surrounding her firm, and I can't wait to see how that situation unfolds. It was good to read about former characters that I love. I highly recommend this story.
Bailey West Novel Serving time was well developed and written. The storyline was was written so well that the story flowed from one scene to the next it was seamless. Serving Time will make you angry, sad, and happy all in one novel. This roller coaster ride is well worth the ride and the emotions that you will go thur.
The character was so human and so developed to the point you will either love them or hate or feel sorry for them. Averie and Samuel made me love them and I am definitely pulling for them and the things that will come for them.
Serving Time will leave you in your feelings and racing to get to book two of the series. Cannot wait to see where this series is going.
I am doing my best to post reviews. I will do my best to not put any spoilers as well. . . . I like both the main characters Averie and Samuel because they are both on fire in their careers, they do not stand down and they exude strength for each other. The characters had some vulnerable moments which they both traded off with being there for each other. Samuel had a hard start but he became a power house. Averie’s sisters gave us the right amount of comedic girlfriend moments which I enjoyed. Family is the overall medium which I love. . . . I liked the book and can’t wait for part 2 because the cliff hanger is one where you are kinda like oh come on but yet happy because another book has to be made.
I loved the story and the characters. I loved all the male attorneys and I loved Avarie, her sisters and her assistant. I love Countee and Laila. Will there be a story about them.? What about Wesley? I loved Samuel and Avaries relationship. I liked that she knew how to submit even though she is a self proclaimed feminist. I also loved the relationship between Roc, his dad and Samuel. Hopefully it explored a little more in part 2. I’m also hoping to hear about the custody case. I actually like all of the character except for Princess. She’s a little too grown and it’s not cute.
Bailey West....I was thinking about this book for awhile, but never got a chance to read it. I usually look at reviews first, the cover next and the author last. But let me make this clear I should have looked at the author first!! She has trumped my decision to look at the author first from now on. This book was by far one of the best reads I’ve had in a while. I was intrigued by the fist sentence. It was funny, suspenseful, witty, fun, loving and insightful all in one. I’m sure I can name more adjectives but I’m trying to read the next series!! If you don’t know, now you do!! Bailey West is the G.O.A.T!!
This is my first book by Bailey and let me tell you I was intrigued! The book was well written and the dynamic between Averie & El kept me reading! Sam’s background is heartbreaking and a reality to many black men in America! But how he didn’t let the stop him and became a prominent lawyer and we’ll respected man was dope! I hope this isn’t the end of Mr. Samuel Valentine because it would be just devastating! I think I know who the person is that causing all this crap. It’s not Caroline. Maybe Av’s assistant👀👀👀👀
Wondering who's trying so hard to end Averie and Samuel before their love connection really get started. I love their sensual attraction for each other. It's constantly evolving in everything they do. They both are opposites in away, but go getters the same. I love their drive and passion for their communities and clients. Glad they found in each what they lacked and what they can accomplish. I love power couples. Can't wait to read the next installment. ReneeG 👍
Bailey West outdid herself with this book! I found myself laughing, holding on to my seat, side eyeing characters, and crying. I wasn’t turned off about it being a cliffhanger at all, and you shouldn’t be either. I will say that you can definitely see the growth in her her writing and I LOVE it. She’s got me pulled in and interested in Xavier and Countee’s stories with their ladies. I can’t wait for the next part of this story.
When I read the preface I thought okay I'll give thus a try. I'm so glad u did . I happened on this arthur by accident and have loved every one of her books. I çant wait for part two. This was an excellent real and I was wondering how she would put these two together since Averie is so I am shera hear me roar. Samuel really does handle his business both in and out of the courtroom .
This is not my first book by Bailey West. I was introduced through the Bluette series. I am a sideline fan until now. I loved this book and am thirsty for the sequel. This book was excellent second n every way. The character development was fantastic and the pace was good. The ending left me hangry. She hit this one out of the park. Tell me the rest is on the way. I really hate cliff hangers, however, in this case, I have to.
Talk about a cliffhanger, I'm clutching my invisible pearls and gasping for air. Samuel is everything the perfect gentlemen with necessary roughness and him and Averie compliment each other so well not just from an career aspect but personal and family as well...I love the dynamics that they share with their friends, families and coworkers definitely loving all the characters can't wait to see how they evolve in book two 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read all the way
