Recognized in both publishing and TV, Jane Hissey is best known for her children’s book series Old Bear & Friends. First published in 1986, it later became the inspiration for BAFTA award winning TV series Old Bear Stories.

As a child growing up in Norfolk, Jane developed a love for writing and drawing. Her holidays were spent wandering fields and lanes, conjuring up fantastical worlds with pencil and sketchbook. When she wasn’t doing this she would spend days at a time sitting in her favorite tree, reading the likes of Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton.

Jane continued to nurture her passion through adulthood and studied illustration and design, later becoming an Art teacher and settling down with her husband Ivan and their 3 children Owen, Alison & Ralph. Inspired by a childhood teddy bear given to her by her grandmother, Jane has written and illustrated more than 20 picture books featuring Old Bear.

Her tales of adventure and discovery are both heartwarming and fun, captivating the imaginations of children and adults alike. Her illustrations are unique, using layers of colour pencil to build a more full & finely detailed finished image.

The Old Bear & Friends series has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide!

Fantastic book, great for bedtime reading just long enough to finish the whole story in one sitting.
I have 3 of the Old Bear books that have been read over and over again.
This story is about a gang of soft cuddly toys (Little Bear, Bramwell Brown, Rabbit & Duck) who play a game of hide and seek (As Old Bear packs up for a Picnic) only to lose Little Bear. They search everywhere and just as they're about to give up they find him fast asleep in the most peculiar place.
Beautiful illustration can't recommend this book enough.

A wonderful read from my childhood, one I’d certainly suggest for other youngsters. Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.

And isn’t that what we want with children’s books, for them to leave a positive lasting impression?

This is a lovely children's book - I used to read it to my daughter when she was young and she loved it.

The story's about some toys who decide to play hide and seek, one of them, Little Bear, goes missing, so the other toys have to search for him.

The illusrations are gorgeous - it's almost as if you could feel the actual textures of the fabrics if you ran your hand across the page.

A lovely little tale. Flo was genuinely worried about Little Bear’s whereabouts but it all ended well.

I was overjoyed for Noah to choose his first additional book from the school library and the fact that he chose one I read as a child meant that reading it together was even more special.

‘Little Bear Lost’ by Jane Hissey is an adorable little story, beautifully illustrating a teddy bear’s picnic with a hiccup!

It all begins when the toys decide to play hide and seek. Old Bear counts to ten as all of the other toys hide. Old Bear struggles to find any of the toys as the room is so untidy so he decides it would be best if they cleaned the room first, and then continued playing. All of the toys gather round to do so, but then comes the realisation that Little Bear is nowhere to be seen.

The story takes the reader on the journey to find Little Bear, inquisitively searching under beds and behind curtains. Hunger then strikes and the toys decide it would be best to eat the picnic that Old Bear had prepared. Of course, as they lift up the lid to the picnic basket, they find Little Bear asleep amongst the food with crumbs on his tummy!

This innocent story evokes a real sense of fun and adventure and would be a great read for young children, particularly those of early KS1. This book would be fantastic as a bedtime story as it ends with all of the toys having a sleep after all of the earlier excitement (much like what you would hope for with the child!) A much enjoyed read.

A kind friend gave this book to my son when he was very small. I read it aloud to both children many many times. Some years later the book was sent to the Goodwill by my well-meaning, tidy spouse who thought the children had outgrown it. When I discovered it missing and learned what had happened I cried. It felt like I'd lost a friend.

That moment marks the conscious awareness of my love affair with illustrated children's books. Since then I've collected a small library of favorites but have yet to replace Little Bear Lost.

In a rather messy toy room, the animals play a game of Hide and Seek. Little Bear is missing and a search begins. Accidentally found sleeping in the picnic basket, the toys have their own picnic.

The pictures appear to be almost like photos. The author has the ability to make the animals seem real. Cut story for young readers.

This book is a little above beginner. The illustrations are really creative. The characters look like real stuffed animals rather than an illustration of an animal so I think young children could relate to the characters. But the illustration is what really drew me to this book and I think they would also appeal to younger students, maybe first & second grade.

In this story all the toys want to play hide and seek, but they stop the game to tidy up a bit. All the toys come out except from Little Bear, and they end up spending the rest of the day trying to find him.

These Old Bear books are great as bedtime stories. The subject matter is suited to the very young but the language and complexity of the illustrations suit a slightly older child.
