It was that difficult moment when we usually part ways. Outside on the doorsteps in the light of the night as we embraced each other. She rested her lips against mine and I couldn’t help but think of the first time we kissed. Spontaneous and unsure if we were riding the same wave, I reached for her lips only to end with our laughter at the awkwardness. But despite the error of the first time, this time felt like new. Sighing in awe of the soft and gentle embrace of our lips, it turned into a tug of war. Like a battle because we didn’t want to let go of that smooth and passionate feeling. That was the final shake as the bottle was about to burst from the pressure, then it “I Love You”, I said softly but firmly. The words seemed to echo for an eternity back and forth between our chests. She stopped and stared at me. Just like my Drill Sergeant badge, I wore my heart on my sleeve. There was so much that she said without words. What a genuine expression of agreement that reflected from her beautiful brown eyes, beyond the ability of any woman to fake or hide. Then she kissed me even more passionately than ever before. In my heart, I believe that it could be more, if it wasn’t for…. THE TABLE BETWEEN US
Kendricks Fields is a writer, father, and military veteran from Fork, SC. Kendricks received his AA from Central Texas College and is currently serving in the United States Army. He is currently working on a degree in Psychology from University of Maryland.
While he's been reading (and writing) all of his life, he is the author of The Table Between Us series. It's a collection of poems expressing the highs and lows of love, cheating, forgiveness, and commitment. It is the love story of a soldier and his woman fighting to stay together. The PG rated version is on Kindle (54 pages long) and the paperback version is for adults only (105 pages).
This is his first book. The sequel to this book, From The Table To The Bed, is coauthored by Latasha Taylor will be available in August of 2019.
But I joined a few book related groups where people can share reviews, articles, and authors can share their work. Which is how I came across Kendricks Fields, an American author who currently lives in the same city as me, IN SOUTH KOREA. This fact alone made me want to read his work.
So The Table Between Us is a poetry book (can be found on Amazon). It's a quick read about love and heartbreak. But to me, personally it felt like young love. One of my favorite poems was X's and O's, which actually takes place on a school bus. Another one I liked was Intoxicated. It told such a vivid story, a story that most people can relate to.
I think that's what I got out of this book; that young love can feel like the best thing in the world but it can also feel like the worst. It's the beginnings, the electricity, the excitement of starting a new relationship that makes the chase feel worth it. But once the realities of life start setting in, things begin to fade, to crumble, to inevitably end.
