okay, now THIS is where it’s at!

i was pretty disappointed with volume 3 - all dumb scattered subplots with significantly less humor and charm than i’d come to expect. but this one is completely back on track. laffs! realistic situations! no weird crime families! (which was in the second volume, but whatever) i am able to love these characters again without reservation!

their dorkiness:

 photo IMG_1398_zpsvxywiel6.jpg

their loyalty:

 photo IMG_1390_zpsksknfa9n.jpg

the sweet dumb oblivion of youth

their expressive outrage

 photo IMG_1393_zpsrjzqokm6.jpg

their esther’s amplified woe

and all the missteps characterizing the treacherous entrée into adulthood

including the specific perils of romance.

It's springtime at Sheffield University—the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and fast-pals Susan, Esther and Daisy continue to survive their freshman year of college. Susan is barely dealing with her recent breakup with McGraw, Esther is considering dropping out of school, and Daisy is trying to keep everyone and everyTHING from falling apart! Combined with house-hunting, indie film festivals, and online dating, can the girls make it to second year?

This volume was so fun and lively. We continue right where we left off in the previous one aka convincing Esther not to drop out of her studies just yet. And a lot of new happenings also occur, such as:

• Seeing Daisy with her grandmother. (I want more of Daisy at home!!)

description
• Another favorite is back with her adorable baby to give Esther some needed advice.

description
And she’s still a badass, just like her sweatpants spell out:

description
• Susan and Daisy arrive at Esther's house to convince her to come back to university.
• Esther gives in and agrees to return to her studies, as she simultaneously realizes that her home town isn't as great as she recalled.
• The group returns to school on the lookout for new living accommodations for their sophomore year. Things get quickly complicated when they realize that there are virtually no fitting homes for them. But things have a way of working themselves out after a necessary street fight with Ed and McGraw about the house.
• Daisy's bisexuality is finally mentioned again!!

description

description
• And in case you're wondering, she's still the best mom friend as always #goals.
• Meanwhile, Susan gets back into dating, which isn't as promising as she thought it would be.

description
• Oh, and Esther gets to star in a movie, which is also not as promising as she thought it would be.
• All this to say: College is a mess. (And this was just their first year.)

A whole lot of other shenanigans occur throughout that left me jumping from issue to issue. And I just cannot wait to see my girls go on and succeed in the next volumes.

3.5/5 stars

After being persuaded to give university a second chance, Esther triumphantly returns to Sheffield with Susan and Daisy for the tubthumpin’ second year. And then they realise they got nowheres to live! Oh ladies. Classic Gigantic Hays! While Susan joins Tinder in the vain hope of getting over McGraw, Esther falls for a student film director and becomes the leading lady in his movie. This is Giant Days Volume 4… aannnnd ACTION!

Among the many things I adore about this series, the balance between the characters is one I’ve really appreciated. The last book was mostly about Susan and Ed Gemmell and this one is mostly Esther with Daisy having some great moments. Everyone gets their time in the spotlight to develop!

Seeing Esther’s homeplace was fun and full of the melodrama that follows her everywhere like a shadow. And, aww, Daisy is totally the girl at the party who does a jigsaw puzzle! The house-hunting issue was the least interesting one but then house-hunting isn’t interesting so John Allison had an uphill struggle finding ways to make that fun! It ends well though with a cray street-fight.

The student film contest was the best issue by far. Esther can’t act but she can ineptly woo the clueless, emo student film director very entertainingly, and the whole episode (this volume feels more episodic than most) was all the better for Susan pressganging Ed and Daisy into making her a movie for the five large prize. We get to see all of the entries too and they’re so funny!

The book closes strong with Susan cramming three hopeless dates into one day and Daisy meets her possible first girlfriend. These characters are so adorable.

John Aliison’s writing is pitch-perfect as always – he knows these characters inside-out, what kind of stories to put them in, and his jokes and observations are genuinely funny. He IS Giant Days!

Max Sarin’s art really helps sell the humour too with the facial expressions – the look on Esther’s face when she says “I’m going to DANCE!” cracked me up, as did Daisy’s running face and Susan’s deathly-bored face when she’s in her shoulder lecture. This is such an awesome creative team!

I envy the people in the future reading this because you’ll have way more Giant Days volumes to binge on after this while I have to wait for the next volume – and the next and the next and the next! This is the problem with discovering a great series long before it’s over - I’m a heroine addict and need my next Giant Days fix NOW!! Volume 4 is another effortlessly brilliant addition to this marvellous series. Come read the comic that turns me into a fawning idiot!

It had been a few weeks since I'd picked up volumes 1-3, so I wasn't sure how quickly this volume would suck me back in, but within a couple of panels, I was wondering why the heck I put the series down for even such a short amount of time as this! I missed Esther, Susan, and Daisy, even though this wasn't my favorite volume so far (mostly because I'm quietly rioting over Susan and a certain someone being grouchy at each other).

A whole lot happens in this volume. This series is so much fun and like college, it is exploring everything to figure out who it is. The girls go to Esther's house and convince her to stay in school. Esther is cut off and has to figure out money. Susan tries out dating and she does 3 dates in one day and none of them go well. McGraw moves on. One of my favorites storylines is Daisy volunteering for new student tours. She gets a wild group and ends up getting a smack on the lips for her trouble.

The series continues to have life and joy and that college experience. They even make their own art films which were amazing. This story bounces fast all over the place, but the glue that holds it together is the girls. They are also moving out of the Freshman dorm and having to find a place to live which is tough. There are hilarious moments with that too. I have seen that dance living in a college town for so long.

I am going to read this series. I hope they can keep the story going. Master's programs are not the same as college I have learned. It's way more serious.

I'm such a fan of this university-themed graphic novel series. The three amigos it centres around are such unique characters and their endless drama-filled antics make for hilarious and endlessly engaging reading. This wasn't my favourite of the series, as I found the issues this contained jumped topics, but made for a fun hour of reading, nonetheless.

Update: I remember why I love this volume so much! There’s so much going on. The first chapter starts off with Esther wanting to drop out of Uni as Daisy and Susan attempt to convince her that it’s a bad decision. I think I read this at a time when I could heavily relate to Esthers feelings of a college or university not necessarily being what she expected to be. This would have been around the time that I was in grad school and the amount of work I was doing was grossly overwhelming. The story then transitions over the trio looking for housing, entering a film festival, and finally concluding with Susan trying to stick her foot back into dating only to get a few surprises. I really loved Susan with McGraw and I know that what she did in vol 3 really messed up their relationship but a small part of me is hoping, praying, and wishing that they get back together at some point in the series. Overall, this is one of the best volumes of the series with the greatest artwork. Definitely looking forward to continuing my reread.

I just have one thing to say and one thing only. Where in the hell is volume 5?!? If you haven't started this series yet I need you to hurry up and pick up the first volume. This is one of the best slice of life comics I've ever ever read.

The house-hunt was too relatable:
*it's Easter* Daisy: I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD HAVE GOT SOMETHING BY CHRISTMAS.

I just love this series so much, if you about to attend uni, are currently at uni, or want nostalgia for your uni days then you need to jump on this series. It's incredible. I can't wait to see what the girls get up to over the summer and I hope this graphic novel series continues until they graduate!

More Lumberjanes for adults! This is a volume I really liked a lot. I feel I'm very much in the groove of it now. We are still in year one, first year uni for Susan, Esther, and Daisy. It’s spring term and Susan is in the throes of breakup with McGraw:

"Do you need to go somewhere and repeatedly fail the Bechdel test?"
"Yes I do."

Esther is struggling with whether to drop out and/or get a job. Daisy is trying to take care of her friends and everything else. Apartment-hunting, indie film festival, online dating hilarities.

In short, nothing surprising happens, nothing anyone who went to university or college wouldn’t know, and so it’s delightful on every page, because Allison is just so clever and funny. All hijinks, all fluff, all the time, played for laughs. It just works!

Most of this volume seems to be the roommates looking for a new place to live, which seems strange to do in the middle of their first year at college... maybe things are different in the UK! Also dealing with relationships. Light and fun, mostly. Not gonna lie, this is the kind of thing I "read" on my iPad while watching something on tv.

Another superb volume of Giant Days From the pen of John Allison!

This one has it all: The girls get exposed to a radioactive isotope, gain super powers and stitch together skimpy latex costumes in order to fight crime! Not only that, but a man-made virus escapes from a top secret government installation and brings the dead back to life as brain-hungry zombies! Susan gets hooked on heroin and has to go into the porn business to make ends meet!

A-hem... Actually, none of that happens, but I wasn't lying when I said about this volume being superb! I absolutely love this comicbook and it must run forever!

Are you listening Mr. Allison and publishing type folks at Boom! Studios? FOREVER!!!

Just as fun and enjoyable a read as the last 3 volumes, this volume was long-awaited by me and I'd had it pre-ordered for several months! It definitely did not disappoint. Esther's character is still as hilarious and dramatic as usual, and I liked that her character really shined in this particular volume. I'm not sure if there is going to be a volume 5, but I sincerely hope so!

I just like this comic series so much! Esther, Susan and Daisy are the best of friends, they're always ready to support each other in times of need, but they can also make fun of each other and have a good laugh about it. Their adventures just bring a smile to my face. I think this series is doing a fantastic job in showing the readers some very important and realistic aspects of university life.

"Do you need to go somewhere and repeatedly fail the Bechdel test?"
"Yes I do."

After a little bit of a weird slump with Vol. 3, I am back in love with this series.

Susan is fresh off her break-up with McGraw (she sees moustaches everywhere!), and tries to fill the hole with various activities and other men, and nothing is working. Esther has vowed not to come back to school after the Easter holidays after messing everything up all year and in general being a hot sexy mess. And Daisy is . . . still Daisy. They are friends, and it is beautiful.

Maybe it's just because this volume focuses on the girls as they approach the end of their first year of university, and with that automatically come decisions and problems. Like, money? How does one get some? Housing for next year. Can it be found?

This series is such a nostalgia kick. I didn't go to college in England (obvs), but it just captures that feeling of being young and on your own SO WELL. The friends you collect, the mistakes you make, the really dumb things you did, and the freedom that comes with being an adult, but not quite. How everything felt like an adventure, even if it was just a dumb trip down to the pub on a Saturday night. What it captures for me, while being extremely hilarious I might add, is that feeling of transition from being a kid to being grown. This age is such a transition time, of figuring things out and trying things on. Plus, the characters are still my fave. I love all of them so much. They are my children.

The only thing is, I still really miss the original art that was in the first two volumes. The new art is okay, but I LOVED the original.

Anyways, very much looking forward to Vol. 5 now, and the official end of their first year at University. Highly recommend this series if you're looking for something really fun and fast to read.

" I'm the Andy Serkis of imagining cinematic entities that might be played by Andy Serkis. You're lucky you found me."

Reread: I'm changing the rating up to 4 stars because I loved this volume! Maybe it's because I already got accustomed to the disjointed feel? Like every issue is a new adventure, and I'm really enjoying that. I guess that's why in my first reading I rated this lower. Anyway, I can't say this enough, I'm so happy I'm re-reading this series, it makes me laugh a ton and I care so much about the characters. Giant Days is my happy place right now.

Original Review:
3.5 stars
Such a feel-good series, I love it. The characters are always on point, the banter is great and it feels relatable and ridiculous at the same time. The only reason I gave this one 3 stars instead of 4, like the others, is cause I laughed less, and there were plenty laughs in the previous volumes, and it took me a few sittings to finish it.
That being said, it's still the charming story I need to start the day in a positive way.
If you haven't picked this up yet, please, give this a chance!

House hunting! And Susan is still struggling to get over her breakup with McGraw. Esther’s parents are cutting off her allowance, forcing her to hunt for a job. And Daisy is trying to keep everyone and everything together as usual, though a new prospect for romance beckons …

This book is seriously addictive. I think they mix opium into the ink or something. I love John Allison’s character design sketches at the back of the book. They should have kept Cosmo’s Stryper tattoo, dammit!

Really liking Ingrid. Hope she becomes a regular. Seems likely at this point anyway.

“Do you need to go somewhere and repeatedly fail the Bechdel test?” Highly recommended!

This volume didn’t capture my attention quite as much as the previous ones did but don’t ask me why, I’d be hard pressed to come up with an answer. I still adore all the characters and their quirkiness and I love reading about their various mishaps but there was just a teeny little bit of something missing from this one for me. It’s still hilarious though and definitely still worth a read!

This series is just so beautifully character driven.

World: The art is beautiful, it's simple and oozing with personal voice and personality, it informs the tone and the feel of the book so very much that this book would be so different without it. The world building here is basic, it moves the story forward but mostly it is merely there for the character drama to play out.

Story: 4 little tales that are short, sweet and full of wonderful banter and interaction. These tales mainly focuses on Esther but the rest of the gals and folks have plenty of time to shine here. This series is great because of the little moments and this is the case here, simple slice of life situations that ooze charm because it's so well written and illustrated. The film issue make me loud out loud.

Characters: The trio of gals is the best, they each are so distinct and full of character, complex and quirky. Then there's the rest of the cast which is also wonderfully realized. The focus on Esther this arc is wonderful and gives us a deeper dive into the drama bomb that is her, fantastic!

I love this series, it's just a great change of pace compared to the other doom and gloom and world ending stuff that I read.

Onward to the next book!

I never have anything bad to say about Giant Days. It's just an incredible graphic novel about college girls. They are delightful. I love reading about their lives.

Volume 4 is chapters 13-16. If you haven't read this graphic novel series, what are you waiting for? Since this is an ongoing story line, I'll try to keep it spoiler free. Chapter 13 the girls are on Easter vacation and Esther is having second thoughts on going back to university after the break. Chapter 14 we learn the girls need new accommodations. There is no way they are going to live in the same vicinity as the baby new comers. These girls are in their second year and they are now women. Chapter 15 Esther needs some extra cash and is desperate for some love. Chapter 16 Daisy does campus tours for free and Susan is on a mission.

I hope this series never ends. It's like a college soap opera that needs to be made into a t.v. show. I would watch it religiously. Anyone else find McGraw attractive? It must the the lumberjack vibe I get. The moustache and his ability to fix and make things is just so enchanting lol.
