Series is now complete! The FBI Dragon Chronicles Book 1 - A Ritual of Fire Book 2 - A Ritual of Death Book 3 - A Ritual of Conquest
A Ritual of Fire is book one in The FBI Dragon Chronicles by J.L. Hendricks & J.A. Cipriano.
I love books that feature dragons in them and I was expecting a fun mystery urban fantasy read, but what I got was lackluster.
The mystery is a case featuring several dead supernaturals, but with no real leads on who is doing the killing and why. Both Alyson and Vlad are partners and have been assigned this case.
We are treated to Vlad and Alyson’s POV’s and I like POV’s, but what I didn’t enjoy was that both characters fancy each other, but neither wants the other to know. The authors focused a lot on this in what I read and completely took away from the mystery and urban fantasy vibe.
The whole feel was slow to start and I couldn’t get into the story or world and so, I ended up DNFing this at 36%.
A Ritual of Fire as not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
Considering vampires turn to ashes if touched by fire, having one paired off with a dragon shifter shouldn’t be working out so well. This new trilogy is off to a flaming start with Alyson and Vlad surviving near-extinction and teaming up with local witches to find the entity behind a slew of ritual murders which in fact herald a much worse situation. The backdrop to the mystery is the relationship between these two FBI agents who count on each other above anyone else. Alyson is a kick-ass agent who doesn’t need to shift to take care of business, and the hottie Vlad is a vampire with a heart. In this book, the romance is a slow burn as we discover the attraction between Alyson and Vlad and events bring them even closer to each other. This novel was well written and didn’t lack momentum as the story starts with a bang that gets propelled right through to the end. I can’t wait until the next book in the series! I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
A fun read (completed it in 2 evenings) . Enjoyed the characters & their banter. Definitely hoping book 2 comes soon. I liked the characters, & was really happy with the amount of coffee being made & drunk in the story ☺️
I wasn’t sure about the start of the book, most of it seemed to be Vlad fancying Alyson but not wanting her to know, and Alyson fancying Vlad but feeling guilty about it, not a great start. Unfortunately I found the story a bit of a struggle, I didn’t like the way the POV kept swapping between Vlad and Alyson and I never felt I had a good grip on the ‘world’ created by the author. In fact although the main characters seemed interesting at the start, I found them quite one-dimensional.
This is a story about a young woman named Alyson Andrews who works for a secret branch of the FBI. But she’s not an ordinary agent, not by a long shot. Alyson is a dragon! That’s right, a fire breathing dragon shifter! And her partner is a vampire named Vlad, which is just awful, but other than his name, he’s a pretty cool dude.
So the duo work together to keep the end times at bay when a crazy band of magic users want to slaughter 100 supernaturals so they can open a portal to Hell. Yikes! Things begin with a bang when the evil group takes down the communications network in the city. Not knowing who to turn to, Vlad insists on going to a coven of witches he is familiar with because they might have some answers.
Of course Alyson doesn’t like this idea as she believes witches killed her parent. Yes, this is another one of those book were the MC doesn’t have a family. Surprise surprise! To make the MC even more “unique”, she is supposedly the last of her kind. “Supposedly”, and we all know what that means. How terribly unoriginal.
Because Vlad dated the High Witch of this coven once upon a time when she was young and attractive, Mara allows Aly and Vlad into her witchy hideout so they can talk about what’s going on and hash out a plan. However they’re all drawing blanks. Who would want to do this and why would they want hell on earth? It honestly makes no sense. And it never does!
Naturally things are going to be difficult for the MC because this is a book, and all the baddies suddenly come out of the woodwork in an attempt to keep the good guys from winning. But of course the nasties fail and Alyson, Vlad and the witchy coven predictably save the day. And that’s pretty much all that happens in the story.
I wish I could say there was more to it, but there’s not. There’s no real character development, or anything else other than action scenes. The plot is face paced, which I generally like in a novel, yet in every other way, this book falls flat. The reader learns nothing about any of the characters, the world building feels almost nonexistent, the mystery is lukewarm, and the odd forceful budding romance is bizarre.
A dragon shifter and a vampire? Really? That is a very odd coupling. Not to mention Alyson and Vlad don’t really have any chemistry at all so it doesn’t feel very believable. Anyways, as you can see I was not particularly impressed by this book. The action was okay, but the plot was terribly predictable and bland. The shallow character progression and lack of proper tension building is what really kinda kills the story. Since I have no draw to the characters, I don’t feel the need, or the want to continue on with the series. There are far better books out there that are interesting and actually worth the read.
Alyson Andrews is a dragon shifter, as far as she knows the last dragon in the world. She was away at school when her family was murdered, by people still unknown.
She's also an FBI agent, in a very secret unit of the agency. Her partner, Vlad, is a 200-year-old vampire. Right now, they're investigating a series of what appear to be ritual killings of paranormal individuals--witches, shifters, etc. At the site of the latest killing, Alyson smells something very, very bad--an herb used only in death magic.
And as she and Vlad drive away from the scene, they're attacked with grenade launchers.
Something very strange is going on.
It gets stranger when they realize they can't call in to section headquarters. The line rings and rings, but no one picks up.
Vlad and Alyson have an interesting and sometimes tricky mix of strengths and weaknesses. Vlad, of course, needs to sleep during the day. Alyson's parents died when she was still a young teen, meaning they never taught her a lot that she really needs to know about her abilities as a dragon, and the customs and traditions of her kind. They suspected they were being hunted by someone, and that magic was involved. Because of this, Alyson suspects witches, but there has never been any real evidence one way or the other.
Alyson lacks patience. Vlad has the patience learned from two centuries of life. Their personalities mesh and clash interestingly, too.
Despite her own reservations, Alyson reluctantly agrees to Vlad's proposal that they go visit some friends of his.
Some witch friends.
The great witch and her coven.
Along the way, they stop at a sketchy bar Alyson knows so Vlad can shelter from the daylight sun. That's where they learn that the phone lines and a good deal else have apparently been taken down by eco-terrorists. What awful timing!
They don't know how complicated their problems are going to get.
I don't ordinarily like vampire stories. This really isn't a vampire story. Nor is it really a shifter story. These elements are present, though, as are witches and werewolves and halflings, and other paranormal beings are at least implied.
Its core, though, is an investigation of a series of major crimes, in a world where these things are present and real and significant enough that the FBI has a section devoted to the related problems, staffed by paranormals who can deal with them. It's a book that kept pulling me back even when a lot of other things going on in my life were pulling me away from it.
Recommended.
I received a free electronic galley of this book from the authors, and am reviewing it voluntarily.

Alyson, dragon shifter, and Vlad, vampire two centuries old, investigate a series of strange murders, and discover something larger and darker going on. Total Score: 5/5
Summary:
Received for n honest review.
Alyson and Vlad work for the FBI in the secret paranormal division dealing with the more unusual and dangerous jobs. Alyson, being a dragon shifter, and Vlad, a vampire, allows them to look at their cases from a different light and the present case dealing with multiple murders in a satanic like manor gives them cause for concern. The intense disregard for the lives lost and the amount of blood on the scene was enough to cause concern, but when Alyson smelled an unusual ingredient Vlad knew there search would send them to the coven run by the Great Witch. Alyson has an intense dislike for witches and her own family and all the other dragons were possibly killed by witches leaving her alone in the world. Alyson is hiding her ability because if revealed hunters would be after her. Vlad and Alyson soon find themselves in a race against time to prevent to not only save lives, but possibly the world itself. With their witch allies Alyson and Vlad must move heaven and earth to protect their friends, creating relationships that they may need if they are to survive what lies ahead.
This was a fast paced and intricate story and the fight has just begun!
This book is the first in a new series. Alyson is a dragon shifter, but it’s a closely guarded secret. Her partner Vlad, a vampire, knows as well as the agency she works for, an unknown division of the FBI. Their latest case is pretty brutal, and they may have to involve witches, a paranormal group she hates and blames for the death of her family, to find their killer, and her secret might just become much more well-known. Because the lives of everyone in the world are at stake and her dragon may be the only one who can save them. I am a longtime fan of Mr. Cirpriano, but I have never read the other author, and I was anxious to see how this book was. Well, I was blown away! This book was exciting from start to finish, with great action, and I loved the plot. I also really enjoyed the interaction of Alyson and Vlad, and I liked how the authors made certain parts of the book different POVs, alternating between the two protagonists. I am anxious to see what how the romance (I hope there is one) progresses between them, as well. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book; I want it now! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
I received a copy of Ritual of Fire from the authors and they have written a fast action story that never lacks momentum as the story grabs you at the start, propelling you right through to the end. This is the first volume of this series and I recommended reading the first book, otherwise you'll be wondering about backstory references.
The story follows an FBI agent, a closeted dragon shifter, and her partner, a “reformed” 200 year old vampire who has a dark history he would prefer to forget. Alyson lacks patience and Vlad has the patience learned from two centuries of life. Just to make things better, they're trying to ignore a growing attraction they both fear.
They are just starting to investigate some strange murders of shifters, witches and other paranormals and see a disturbing pattern that suggests these are ritual killings. At the scene of the latest killings, Alyson smells something that scares her -- death magic. Then, as they drive away they're attacked with grenade launchers. When they call headquarters they find out that all communication is down - they are on their own.
Five stars for a fast moving and enjoyable story. I look forward to future installments.
Alyson is a dragon shifter (the last one and hiding it from others) and Vlad a 200 year old Vampire - they work together as partners for the FBI in a secret department that looks into crime involving paranormal people and artefacts. They are starting to investigate some strange murders of shifters, witches and similar and see a disturbing pattern that suggests that something very dangerous and dark is going on. Can they find out what is going on, what they are trying to achieve and who is doing all of these murders?
Great story. I loved the relationship between Alyson and Vlad and the suggestion of possible romance between them in the future. The story was well told and very clear and easy to understand. As this is the first story in the series I'm definitely addicted and just NEED to know what happens next. A great writing partnership that has definitely delivered something special - they need to keep this going!!
I tried this book because the kindle blurb looked like fun and I’m a longtime fan of JL Hendricks. I’ve not read anything by JA Cipriano yet but, based on this book, I see I’m going to have to. Why? Because this book was frankly superb. The lead character, Alyson Andrews, is just the sort of ideal kick-a** heroine I adore and she’s a Dragon too (the last one known) - and dragons have always been a weakness of mine. She’s got great chemistry with her partner Vlad the vampire (yes, an actual Vlad) who she works with at a secret branch of the FBI. Cue in the potential for romance here and I will be cheering it on. Then add in their latest investigation, with its witches, paranormals and sacrificial rights, and (mustn’t forget) murderous fiend out to sacrifice Alyson’s friends - and, by the way, the potential reopening of the gates of Hell (anyone interest in demons walking the Earth?). Not a fun day at the Office. Luckily it is a fun read at home. Great stuff and highly recommended.
This book had a lot of good things going for it. I thought it was an interesting start to the new series, however, I found it leaked a lot in certain areas and the two-person perspective just didn’t flow. The main character seemed lost and not really able for me to get into her. The story didn’t really flow The way I think it could have, there is also not enough world building to really get understanding why witches didn’t like the wares or how to the paranormal structure is set up in the world. I think the world building needs a lot more work to help the reader better understand who’s in charge of who? why don’t the species like each other? and who represents each faction? It’s not a bad start to my series but it needs a lot of work I’m not sure if I’ll read the next one but I may check it out. The romance aspect also seemed thrown together like they had to have a romance tension it seems like the author wanted to add a romance aspect but really didn’t think it all the way through.
The action never ended in this story, so I was hooked from page one! I wanted to get finished, but then then I didn't because I did want all this great on-the-edge-of-your-seat action to end!!!! Let me say that Vlad can feed from me anytime, and I would love to run his horns for him😜. Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens between Alyson and Vlad. All that chemistry and want has to go somewhere. So I knew that this book was the start of a series, but I was yelling at them, by the end, to get it on already. I hope the next book comes out soon. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book, and I borrowed it through the Kindle Unlimited program too.
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Wow!!! This story was gr8. FBI agent, Alyson is possibly the last dragon shifter & her partner Vlad is a vampire. They make an awesome team. They're working on a case where paranormal are being ritualistically murdered. They're attacked by nasty wolves & end up working with someone awesome witches. I really enjoyed this story. Can’t wait to read the next one. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.
This is an action-packed paranormal story featuring an unlikely pair - a dragon and a vampire. Although there are some typical aspects of paranormal and fantasy stories, there are also some unique twists and turns that will keep you interested. A spark of hinted romance between the two main characters is also worthy of note. Will definitely look into the next installment of the book. Voluntary and honest review after receiving ARC (advanced reader copy).
Sci-fi, urban fantasy readers. Funny, a different type of justice league. I can't wait to read the rest of the series -3 more? The only problem was the need for a human proofreader. It seems to have been speech to text, without checking grammar, verb conjugation, noun usage. I enjoyed the book and it has the potential to be an urban Dragons of Pern series or a modern take on a Xanth multiverse. 2 stars on grammar, but 4 for the story.
The FBI dragon, Alyson is one of the last of her kind. Partnered with a vampire, the duo must find out who is practicing ritual sacrifices and save the world. Fast paced and easy reading, the story catches the reader's attention until the explosive and action packed ending. Full of supernatural creatures, the cast of the book is interesting and compelling to make the reader want more.
Alyson, a hot dragon shifter, and Vlad, the hot vamp, are FBI agents partners. Their investigation leads to black magic and sacrifices. To make things hot for the dark ones, dragonfire seems in order. I like the action, humor, and romance. Alyson's character is very strong yet vulnerable. Vlad is controlled and careful with his emotions. Will they get it on later in the series? I look forward to the next book.
"I glanced over at him and sighed. We had only been partnered for about six months, a very intense six months, and I would be lying if I didn’t say he was a very handsome man."
Why? Seems a really weird way to introduce a professional law enforcement partner and enough for me to put the book down.
(I didn't want to give this a rating, but apparently I can no longer review without one?)
Wow! What an interesting book with lots of suspense. We are deep into paranormal territory with witches, vampires and shifters. The last two actually work deep down for the FBI. It’s a crazy tale with plenty of action and I enjoyed it all! I received an advance readers copy and chose voluntarily to leave this review.
This is the first book in a new series and boy was there plenty of action to keep a person pulled into the pages. I loved the world building and the characters in this book and truly hope that there will be more books! I loved the hinting of a possible romance between Alyson and Vlad. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
I loved this story. The interactions between Vlad and Alyson were enjoyable. All the characters were engaging and entertaining and the storyline was intriguing and interesting. I loved that chapters were told from either Vlad or Alyson point of view. I couldn't put it down and I hope to read more.
Writing failed to emotionally involve me with characters, not three dimensional enough. Repeatedly, they said I feel this or that but unlike characters of great writers like Bujold, Cherryh, Lorna Freeman, or Heather Gladney they were unconvincing. Show not tell. Mara closest to well done.
I downloaded A Ritual of Fire: An FBI Dragon Shifter Adventure as an ebook from Amazon Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed this storyline and the chemistry between main characters Alyson and Vlad add a nice tension alongside the great plot. This writing team has given us a wonderful first book to his paranormal action series.
After reading the synopsis, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be more of comedy, action, or dramatic. Turns out it had some of all of the above. It was a real page turner, I did not want to stop reading.
What a great reading book! Both authors know how to write stories that grab your imagination. A female dragon shifter and a vampire work together for the FBI to make a better place to live but now black magic is in the works. Werewolves and witches are being sacrificed to bring demons from hell on Earth, and let the hunt begin. A page turner for sure.
Really enjoyed this first volume in a new series. The world created is wonderfully done, the characters vivid and three dimensional, the plot sucks you in from the word go. Struggled to put this book down, and was disappointed to finish it. I can't wait for the next installment!
How can a book get better by an author that is already superb. Just loved it, couldn’t stop reading. When I got to the end, I was so wrapped up in the story, that I didn’t even realize it. Ready for more. Received an ARC
Great action-adventure urban fantasy. Alyson and Vlad are a dynamic team. Stella adds interesting friendship. While the story has a solid conclusion, it seems like there is definitely more in store. I look forward to more.
Based on a Kindle Unlimited version borrowed on 15 June 2018.
