Edge of Spider-Geddon

Rate this book
Spider-Punk is back and better than ever. After SPIDER-VERSE, Hobie Brown was a Web-Warrior, but that didn't mean things back in his universe were solved. The writer of the Spider-Punk story in SPIDER-VERSE is back and joined by VENOM's Gerardo Sandoval! Spider-Punk's Earth is under attack both on the ground and from space, meaning his responsibility seems to outweigh his power. After Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance, The Umbrella Academy) and Jake Wyatt created SP//dr back in SPIDERVERSE, she was one of the most requested heroes. With Spider-Geddon on the horizon, SP//dr is back. Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler are joining the team to bring you the next chapter in Peni Parker's life and set the table for the Spider-Event of 2018!

This solid final catch up with Superior Octavius (Doc Octopus) comes across as an 'I've seen it all before'as it features four alternate Spider-Men some familiar, some new. The overall story was already feeling jumbled with the creators doing lots of assuming that us readers remember every tiny detail of previous Spider-events; well I didn't. On the very much plus side, Tolliver, AKA Superior Octopus(!) is as brilliantly a portrayed character as ever. 6 out of 12, Three Stars overall.

These were surprisingly good for the most part. Five stand alone stories of what each Spider character is doing in his or her own universe before being recruited into Spider-Geddon. I loved the Spider-Punk story and his nighilitic cohorts suck as Captain Anarchy. The was good clean fun and a story made for Gerardo Sandoval's art. The Sp//der story was decent. If you've seen Into the Spider-Verse then you are familiar with Peni Parker. The Spider-Ben story was confusing, which isn't surprising. Jason Latour should stick with drawing. I hate his writing. The last story flips the script on the Spider-Man / Green Goblin dynamic and I dug it. Last but not least was the Superior Octopus #1 setting up his new series and what Otto Octavius has been up to since Secret Empire. I'm looking forward to this series if Christos Gage can tone down Otto's haughtiness some.

Edge of Spider-Geddon is run, the other two issues are pretty meh.

World: The art is great for the four Edge of Spider-Geddon issues, they have their own distinct style and it’s pretty beautiful to look at. The other two issues on the other hand are ugly and mediocre (Spider-Geddon 0 is the ugly one). The world building here is solid, it follows the same road paved by Spider-Verse and continues on it and it’s not a bad thing at all. The four Edge of Spider-Geddon issues are solid with old fan favourites and new ones taking stage. The pieces of the puzzle that start off this new event is a bit iffy and it’s pretty stupid but oh well it was needed to start the event.

Story: The four Edge of Spider-Geddon stories are strong, very strong and interesting to read, the new characters are great, I love Spider-Peter and Spider-Ben and the Norman version is pretty creepy. These four issues are paced well and well constructed and really feed off the best parts of Spider-Verse. The other two issues are needed to start the event but they are rather ho hum and also pretty stupid. One issue with the video game version was alright but it’s pretty much filler and there is nothing new of note and depth there to be found, it’s fan service (plus the art is absolutely terrible). Then there’s the Superior Octopus issue which has a really annoying main character and his arrogance of course is the cause and it’s a leap in logic we need to accept cause Otto is not stupid enough to do something like this knowing the Inheritors are around, but oh well, this was needed for this event.

Characters: The new characters are pretty great, they are fun and unique and I can’t wait to read more about them. I love that Peni continues to be Evangelion and her story is also amazing to read and look at. Spider-Punk is one note but it’s a beautiful one note and I like that. Norman is creepy and with him in the world it will be interesting for this event. Superior Octopus is just obnoxious and annoying and...oh well there had to be some bad eggs there.

It was solid until the final two issues, which then took a nose dive.

Onward to the next book!

Interesting and fun iterations of the "Spider" across the multiverse. My favorites were Spider-Punk (ahem... I mean, Spider-Man) just because... who doesn't love a punk-themed universe? And 13-year old Spidey with a powered Uncle Ben. Basically a Marvel Batman and Robin, so... yeah, you know how I love my family dynamics. The Superior Octopus story was a nice bridge to the main Spider-Geddon story arc. I'm actually kind of interested in that character now. So, we'll see if I pick up that series. All in all.. fun and an awesome set-up to a big comic event.

I didn't have much hope for this book, since it's just a group of one-offs highlighting alternate Spiders. And I suppose the plotting is a little shallow, like I expected, but the book really excels in telling us who these alternate Spiders are, providing us with their characters and their background.

So, this is a great intro to Spider-Geddon because it fills in the backstory of many of the peoples we'll meet there.

(My only complaint is the muddy, hard-to-understand Spider-Peter-and-Ben story, but the rest are fun, insightful, or both.)

Spider-Geddon is nigh, but first, it's prelude time. You know the drill by now - four one-shots spotlighting new and existing Spider-Men from across the multiverse, plus an extra one focusing on what Doctor Octopus has been doing since the end of Dan Slott's Spider-Man run as he finds himself tied up in the insanity as well.

You also know the drill by now in terms of quality. We start pretty high with Jed McKay returning to Spider-Punk alongside Gerardo Sandoval. He throws in as many Spider-characters he can; I'm surprised this hasn't become the new Spider-Gwen title, to be honest, since there's a lot to mine here.

Then we take a bit of a tumble. The Sp//dr story isn't bad, but it feels like a multi-part arc shoved into one issue so that we could get her version of Venom all in one go. This is written by Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson, based on a story by Gerard Way, with art by Alberto Albuquerque, and it's just kind of fine.

The worst of the bunch is the Jason Latour and Tonci Zonjic story about Spider-Ben and Petey, which reads like his original Spider-Gwen one-shot in the original Edge Of Spider-Verse; the dialogue is all over the shop and feels unfinished, and the characters just aren't that likeable. Plus there's a big continuity error that really throws this one out. Not a fan at all.

The Norman Osborn one-shot written and drawn by Aaron Kuder is probably the most important since he plays the biggest role in the main Spider-Geddon story, but he's another immensely unlikable protagonist that makes it a bit of a slog. It also ends strangely, so you have to make some leaps between the end of this and Norman's reappearance in the main event.

The shining star however is easily the Superior Octopus one-shot, which I'd say is almost required reading for the main Spider-Geddon event, bridging the gap between the end of Slott's Spider-Man run and Spider-Geddon for Doc Ock. It's by Christos Gage and Mike Henderson, who are unsurprisingly the team behind the newly relaunched Superior Spider-Man book, so I have high hopes for that too.

Edge Of Spider-Geddon feels a bit by the numbers - some stories are great, some are dire, and some fall somewhere in between. Not required reading bar the one Doc Ock story, but not worth decrying entirely - check it out if you fancy.

This was decent. We basically get a look into the world these characters come from and what they were up to before they were recruited for Spider-Geddon. Mixed bag as some issues were better than others. My favs were 1) the Spider-Punk story. Gotta love Captain Anarchy and the Punk version of Hulk. 2) the Superior Octopus story. Being as tho I got this book after I had read Spider-Gwen and Spider-Geddon , it was cool seeing how it all started.

I only bought this for one reason and that was to read Superior Octopus #1, let me tell you I was no disappointed. It takes place straight after Worldwide story arc, now Otto has decided to go to San Francisco to become their new hero. It's strange because every superhero has do it at some point, we've had Daredevil, Scarlet Spider and even the West Coast Avengers . For a place so popular they never seem to stay, anyway he's working at a university with you know you, again! Mean while he's getting criminals to do his work for him, it's a pretty satisfying story.

The rest of this was pretty solid as well, we had a Spider-Punk story which was alright Kang was selling his merch and wanted him to play by his book. Eh wasn't the best but it did it's job but I think the rest of these were very good.

We had the SP//dr story which I didn't expect to like so much, it was kind of unpredictable and predictable at the same time. You could see some story elements coming into play with the inclusion of Venom, the best bit for me was the Kauji fighting and the aftermath, that's what really made me enjoy this story.

Taking a page out of Spider-Gwen's book, we have character swap. With Norman Osborn being Spider-Man and Harry trying to stop him, there wasn't really much to the story. They mentioned Pete a lot but it's never explained what actually happened to him, it's more about Norman enjoying being evil and Harry coming to get him. Even that is short lived but with only one issue, what do you expect?

Finally we have probably the stand out story, aside from Superior Ock, this featured a Uncle Ben and Pete both being Spider-Man and teaming up to fight crime. Throughout this Ben is trying to explain to Pete that because he's young, he doesn't know everything whilst Ben also makes a very grave mistake. Part of the story takes place after Spider-Geddon which is a bit weird as the rest of these stories are a prelude to it, so it might spoil part of the story.

We also get a prelude at the end with a bunch of Spider people hanging out only to find out the inheritors aren't dead.

After the events of Spider-Verse, it was hard for me to see how much further the storyline of the multiversal Spider Force could go. Yet this next chapter in the Inheritor saga was a great introduction into the deadliest chapter of the Spider-Man mythos yet. Getting to dive head first into the various worlds of the Spiders, from Hobie Brown’s Spider-Punk to the incredible new SP//dr story based on Umbrella Academy writer and My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way’s original Spider-Verse creation, giving a more tech based Spider hero the spotlight she deserves. This is a great way to jump into the action and see the buildup to Spider-Geddon’s epic story.

As any anthology by different writers and artists, the quality is gonna be wildly different; however, like with Edge of Spider-Verse before, these stories were a pretty amusing setup for both the big event and for future stories with these characters.

I hope Marvel gives us miniseries starring Spider-Punk, Peni Parker and Spider-Ben with these creative teams, since they did a pretty good job at continuing prior stories and/or setting up the path for new ones.

So this book was supposed to be read before Spider-Geddon, which they could have signposted at the start of that book. Thankfully I didn’t get too far into that book before reading this one. Still, some of the narrative twists were undermined because I’d started reading Spider-Geddon.

Generally, I enjoyed this book. Spoiler alert, Otto is still annoying. I know he thinks he’s a good guy now, but with that ego, he’s far from it.

I’ll go over the stories one by one. Hobie’s world is so interesting and so scary. Even though comic book Hobie is American, I still only hear Daniel Kaluuya’s voice and accent and feel like I’m reading a story set in England. That particular world just makes more sense to me as being British. I liked the alternate versions of known characters, but I was startled by how young Hobie looked here. I guess that’s regular, but Across the Spider-Verse has me thinking of Hobie differently. I kind of wish the book had stuck with being an exploration of the world and characters, and not a boss fight. I really just wanted to know more about this world.

Peni’s story—I still feel like her stories are way too chaotic, and she often takes a backseat in them. In this story, Peni is absent for a significant part of it while her aunt and rival take centre stage. I feel like Peni’s life, which is so unusual given she’s SP//dr and working for, is it Osborn?, would be interesting to read. Who is she, what does she feel being so isolated and different from those around her? The central conflict between Peni and the Venom girl was badly set up. Can people just come out with it instead of dragging a misunderstanding along forever. Peni’s aunt and uncle aren’t nice people. I don’t think they see Peni as a person at all—more like an experiment and a weapon. And then in the end, something tragic happens, but instead of us reading about Peni dealing with it, she gets whisked away on the Spider-Geddon mission. What a cop out.

The two Spideys story—honestly, this just confused me. Ben was dying of cancer and then was magically cured after a blood transfusion from Peter. Not a fan of magical cure stories. And Ben is not a very loving husband since it appears that despite being married to May for decades, he knows absolutely no Spanish. Not a great start. And then instead of some bonding between the two Spideys, Ben tries to kill Kraven because Kraven tries to kill Ben, and Peter is super angry with Ben…and then they make up? Or did something happen, since Ben is drinking in a bar? It was all too confusing. It felt like the writers very going for a vibe rather than a cohesive narrative.

I actually really dug the Osborns story. Despite it being in epistolary format, which is very old school, I liked that it gave us a Spidey voice without being yet another Peter Parker story. It was a little ghoulish but not disturbing or horrifying. It had a sweet, though sad ending. I wonder if this world’s Harry and Peter were closer than friends. Sure came across as such.

On to Superior Octopus. I’m sorry but who chose that name? Doc Ock is a clever and intriguing moniker—Octopus is a silly word. Otto is not as infuriating here, though the chip on his shoulder must give him a back ache. I like that a lot of the story is about him being tongue-tied around Anna Maria. I have no idea what he did to her when he was Otto, but in his new form he decides not to pursue a relationship with her, instead establishing that he’ll just respect her. I think, if that one panel is to go by, she may have figured out his secret. I have never met Anna Maria before, but she seems sweet and vivacious, and apparently a Little Person, so that’s refreshingly different to see from the boring conventional shapes and sizes we always have in comics. The story dragged in the end with the Gorgon, but what would have been a cool twist to see Otto come back from the dead and seeing how he did it, was undermined by the fact that I’d already started reading Spider-Geddon.

The last story is short and leads into the actual event. I thought the moments between Billy Braddock and Karn were really touching. The only two people left on Loomworld, of course they consider one another their greatest friend. I will say, Billy is supposed to be British, but his dialogue doesn’t sound right at all. He sounds American, and even makes a quintessential American mistake of saying ‘it’s just you and I rattling around here’. Pretty sure Brits don’t make that specific pronoun mistake.

I do think the Spideys abandoning so much tech at the Inheritors’ hideout is shocking. They can’t have been that dumb when there’s a tech genius within their enemy numbers. What a strange choice to kick off the event.

Good enough.

Extra mini english/spanish review:

Nice setup for Spider-Geddon (Verse 2??). Spider-Punk (MAN) was my least favourite, probably cos I can't stand the edgyness of it but yeah It's a joke so,fine.

Sp//der was nice. I'm pretty sure it was over copying Evangelion but I haven't seen it so can't be sure. Art's great on this. Would like to read more of this.

Got mixed feelings about the third one. The storytelling was strange I kinda dig the flashback/bitter old man or how I call it: Old ass Logan vibe. But, dunno I gotta read a comic that wasn't out yet to understand this one??? Yeeeeah. It's probably my fav tho, pity they for later.

Last one,not much to say. Apart from

This was a partial slay as it was 5 various spider one-shots and not all were actually good. 💀

Absolutely LOVED the Superior Octopus story. I had just finished reading his run before this so it was such perfect timing. I love Doc Ock Spider-man so much and I wish that was just the whole thing here because 10/10, his new suit and the metal arms were dope as fuck. It's so funny because he still has such bad guy energy even in the way he goes about things but he has the sense of responsibility from Peter and he aims his evil mastermind toward saving people, and like genuinely wanting to do so. 😭

I really liked the Peni Parker story too but it had SO much plot and world going on, I wish that had it's own run too because it was so rushed and ended so abruptly. The Norman Osborn story was pretty interesting and I liked how it flipped it but it was so forgettable that I literally forgot about it when first writing this review.

The Spider-Punk story was neat but the punk Hulk just had me crackling up I'm sorry. Then the Spider-Ben and young Peter story which was so confusing, I had no idea wtf was going on? The writing was horrible like goddamn. I can't play the flute, I deal with it. That dude can't write, he needs to deal with it instead of forcing us all to suffer his jumbled confusing mess of an issue.

The Edge of Spider-Verse anthology was where Spider-Gwen began, so you can see why Marvel would want an equivalent collection for the godawful sequel event, and why they'd get Jason Latour to write one again. Alas, lightning does not strike twice; a world where a transfusion of Peter's blood both saves Uncle Ben's life and gives him spider-powers too is a lovely idea, but for a single issue this tries to do way too much. Ditto the one about a world where Norman Osborn is Spider-Man, and as for the SP//dr issue, I still don't really buy the character as a solo star (though Peni is great fun in teams. Ideally ones where you don't have to see the name Peni written down, because...well). The highlight is definitely the Spider-Punk issue, an entertaining exercise in biting the hand that feeds where a world with an anarchist superhero scene is being commodified by the enormous conglomeration from their future that owns all their image rights. And they say Marvel aren't doing political comics anymore. The collection is filled out with a Superior Octopus one-shot that does its best to tack around various inconsistent elements of other people's stories, and has fun moments, but which would surely be more at home in the first volume of the same writer's new Superior Spider-Man series.

Edge of Spider-Geddon serves not as a prequel (Much like edge of Spider-Verse did), but as several short stories that run alongside the early parts of the main story. They are:
1) Spider-Punk vs Kang the Conglomerator and Thunderstrike
2) SP//dr vs. VEN#m
3) "Spider-Ben and Petey" - both their origins
4) Spider-Man (Norman Osborn) fights against the horrible heroic Kobold (Harry Osborn) (Was nice to see a twist and role reversal...)

The stories do their best to establish the worlds these Spider-Totems come from, but ultimately only serve the purpose of getting them into the main Spider-Geddon storyline.
Overall, not enough substance to be wonderful. Ended up being just ok.
Kind of recommend, but only if you NEED to read the complete story.

Collects Edge of Spider-Geddon issues #1-4 and Superior Octopus issue #1

I really enjoyed "Spider-Verse" and the "Edge of Spider-Verse" issues, but those "Edge of Spider-Verse" stories didn't always tie into the main "Spider-Verse" story. In fact, some of the Spider-characters featured in "Edge" didn't always appear in the main story at all. The thing I liked about these "Edge of Spider-Geddon" issues is that they strongly connected to the main "Spider-Geddon" story, and all of the characters here appeared in the main event. The final issue in this collection is about Otto, and it acts as both a kick-off to "Spider-Geddon," as well as a kick-off to the new "Superior Spider-Man" title.

These are all the set-up stories for the event, Spider-Geddon, which is essentially a spin-off of Spider-Verse. I still love meeting all the different spider people, but there are so many that it becomes a bit difficult to follow. Despite that, the artwork is fantastic, and the creativity really shines through as we meet some new characters that we didn't see before. The different iterations of Spider-Man work together to add to the cannon of the character.

Like any anthology, this has its hits and misses. But even the misses are fun and chefs kiss on the hits. In particular, the Spider-Punk story. As Sony and Disney squabble over Spidey rights, this story is particularly pertinent with its criticism of media monopolies and how they control and shape our culture and not always for the best. I'm legit surprised this made it past editorial with news leaking of Marvel exercising out critical essays for being political.

I e read the spiderverse event so this seems like it collects some of the stories that happen afterward to bring about the next problem - spidergeddon. Which is really a continuation of spider verse with the same villain coming back for more.

Some of these were meh, but a couple were really good. The Doc Oc one was the best and probably most relevant to the continued story.

Meh, some were good others either annoyed or confused me.
I liked Spider-punk and Superior Octopus.
Thought Pini was a PITA and the story felt longer than a one shot.
Got confused by Petey and Ben.
And annoyed that Norman got away without facing retribution by getting zapped out of that reality.

This was a surprisingly good prelude book. I don't know why I read these books. They're clearly aimed at suckers like me who are completionists. They add only the barest hint to the main book. Otherwise, they'd be collected with the main book.

But I remember thinking this was good. Also, makes it clear that Web Warriors is largely forgotten but not completely.

Some of this was interesting, but most of it was just mainly confusing and I'm not sure if I'm going to bother reading the main Spider-Geddon event now. I mainly just wanted to because I want to read Seanan McGuire's run on Spider-Gwen which is directly tied into Spider-Geddon, and I don't know if it'll make sense if I don't read that alongside it...

Dammit, I hate comic book events.

I love Spider-Man and I think that Spider-Punk is one of the most interesting characters in the multi-verse. Unfortunately, this volume contains little to no cohesion, which kept it from getting interesting. I would have vastly preferred four issues about Spider-Punk’s role in everything. Instead, I was given a bunch of seemingly unrelated stories. Meh.

Interesting snippets of stories about the Spider people in alternate dimensions. Almost every story had some unexpected twists and turns. Different versions of heroes and villains from 616, which is always fun. But I couldn’t get into the Spider-Ben & Spider-Pete story. What even happened in that one? Otherwise, solid art styles, varied storylines. Good.
