Shari Dawn seems to be the most boring girl on Ronah, an Island on the Realm of Lissae, where almost everyone uses Innarn, and Shari is relentlessly bullied because she doesn't use magic. But when her secret is uncovered, and it's revealed that she's the Altoriae, the General fated to save her Realm in the war to control Lissae, time starts to count down on an ancient curse designed to test her skills. Caught in a fight against the clock, Shari must save her Realm with the team she never wanted.
With the curse at work and only ten days to save Lissae, Shari faces challenges harder than keeping her secret. Will she overcome them, or will Lissae end up under the control of a creature from her deepest nightmares?
Don’t miss Ronah, the first of the Lissae series by R. Lennard. If you like epic battles, relentlessly enemies and elemental magic, then this young adult fantasy novel will have you turning the pages!
R. Lennard dreamed of being the headmistress of a boarding school, a jockey, a ballet dancer and a diplomat. At the same time. Two left feet stopped the dancing dream, and a fear of falling stopped the jockey one.
At ten years old, when she discovered that the squiggles on the page actually meant something, she devoured every book in the library before figuring out that she could be all she dreamed of and more if she wrote the book.

An avid fantasy and sci-fi reader, she fell in love with dragons, space travel, discovering fantastical history and stepping through a cupboard. This book starts out when Shari is three, and takes about a hundred pages for her to reach age seventeen, during which we see snippets of important events in her life. Once her powers are revealed to everyone, it's pretty much non-stop action. It's a huge world being built here (I think the glossary was over fifteen pages) full of vivid imagination. All manner of races and culture to explore!
Action packs the pages of this fast-paced and engaging read about an intriguing world and dangerous creatures.
Ronah is an island, a sentient island, which is part of Lissae (a sentient realm). Both of these are part of a series of realms and islands, all with their very own types of creatures. Not all creatures are friendly. To protect the Ronah, every so often a champion is born, the Altoriae, and the current Altoriae is unlike the rest before her. While most creatures on Ronah possess a type of magic, some are blank. Shari is a blank, or so her tests have determined. In fact, she is so talented that she's been able to shield all tests. As she grows up, she learns from Ronah and Lissae how to train her powers because she knows that once her identity is given price, her life will never be the same. But she can't hide forever and soon finds herself up against the deadliest creatures the realms have to offer.
I sat down and had to read this book in one sitting. It's that engaging. And I can't wait to get my hands on book two to see what happens next. That said, this isn't the easiest book to write a review about.
The author has put together a very complicated world with a wide variety of characters and monsters. There is constantly something happening, and each situation is more dangerous and sinister than the last. To say Ronah has her hands full is an understatement. She's a warrior with a huge task, one she's up to but not without help on her side. Still, Ronah isn't the all-powerful warrior that one might expect. The book starts with her as a very young child and spends the first few chapters watching her meet Lissae and Ronah, and come into her strength. These chapters, while cementing the background and Shari as a character, went on longer than necessary...and yet, held my attention. There are violent scenes as well...which might be harder for more sensitive readers to handle.
There are huge battles in this book, vivid and well-described ones. Others, are mentioned in past tense with just a quick remark. While some moments sit and draw in, others are told and superficial. And everything happens so fast! In this sense, it wasn't the strongest read and normally, would have caused me to lay it down. But there's something about this book which holds. The characters are intriguing. There are secrets, and intrigue and so many things hiding in the shadows. And Shari is a heroine who is easy to connect to and cheer for the entire way through. Every turn adds something unexpected and it makes it impossible to set this read aside. So while I normally would see problems in the writing, it's hard not to give the book full marks since I thoroughly enjoyed the read and can't wait to see more of this tale.
In other words, YA fantasy friends who love action, intrigue and all sorts of bumps in the night...and enjoy a tough heroine who isn't always tough. And maybe the hint of romance thrown in...which it might not be at all... these readers will get lost in this world and enjoy it.
I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
I received a digital arc in exchange for an honest review. This is simply my opinion on the book and is not influenced by any external factor.
Before I start this review, I have to say that the worldbuilding was breathtaking and out of this world. Literally. Sentient islands. This is a really unique concept, even in fantasy, and as such, does take more time to develop. Especially with also creating a new culture with new greetings, new technology, and new lifestyles. This is why I found the first 30% of the book to be dry compared to the rest of the story; however, bear in mind that during that first 30%, the author has been setting the scene and the plot for the other exciting 70% to roll out.
I really liked how we got to see into Shari’s past and how it all started, but I think there was a bit too much focus on her childhood. On the other hand, this contributed nicely to the worldbuilding as it allowed the reader to learn about the different roles and conflicts before acting on them on a larger scale.
The characters, with the exceptions of the antagonists and Anika, were all likable and well developed. Shari was not rude, angsty or helpless, and her actions were always thought out. I do wish that we could have seen a bit more development between Shari and Mitch and Tania.
The other thing I loved – there was no romance in this book! For those who don’t know, I am not a fan of romance in books, so this made the story more enjoyable for me.
Also, the ending, just as we think that it’s all over and the story will end on a positive note, we get a real twist which shifts our sense of comfort and sets the scene for book two. Which I also plan on reading.
Overall rating: 3.75/5 (Rounded to the nearest full star). A really great start to the series, definitely one to be reread in the future. I am looking forward to reading the sequel and any future installments.
This first book in the series had me HOOKED from page one. The world-building? Rich, immersive, and so easy to fall into. The kind of fantasy world where you can see the landscapes, feel the danger, and immediately understand what’s at stake.
And the characters—especially Shari. She’s not just a girl… she’s a warrior. Strong, determined, and thrown into the task of a lifetime, her journey kept me glued to the pages. Watching her face impossible challenges and grow into her role was incredibly satisfying and emotional in the best way.
The pacing is fast, the action hits hard, and the magic system adds that extra layer of wonder that makes you want to keep reading “just one more chapter” (until suddenly it’s 2 a.m.).
If you love:

AN AMAZING ADVENTURE!!! Delightful! Lennard seems exceptional at weaving a tangled web. She absolutely nailed all of the emotions swirling through this bad boy that leaves you reeling and wanting more. She spins this baby with such a refreshing realism it catapults this bad boy to life effortlessly. Such perfection at escalating this little jewel to a whole new level with this compelling storyline and such an intertwined plot. The personalities are well matched and brought together smoothly. The scenes are so graphically detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that feels so realistic it's like you're right there with them. Throw in some twists and turn and a few bumps and bruises as you watch the world light up. Amazing job Lennard, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
I liked the story with its mix of action, and magic. I liked the characters and thought watching Shari grow up and learn what she could do was amazing. I loved the glimpses of her everyday life along with her secret training was fun. Of course then she reaches her teenage years and wham. What a curse and character builder. It was a good and entertaining read that kept my attention and had me reading to the end to see what would happen next.
A wonderfully constructed new universe. R. Lennard has done a magnificent job of weaving not just one world, but many different worlds and unique creatures for each one. Shari is a powerful heroine and is surrounded by a great support team. I love the suspense and inspired in this book. I look forward to the rest of this series.
Action and Magic combine to make one heck of a first book in this series! The world and character building in this book are amazing! This story follows Shari, a girl...a warrior...on the task of a lifetime. I was hooked from page one and can’t wait to read more!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was an absolute amazing read. As an intermediate reader I found it very easy to follow and the story flowed very nicely from chapter to chapter. There is plenty of character and world building that make it very hard not to get a bit emotional at times. An absolute roller coaster of an adventure in the realms and the island of Ronah. I would recommend this to anyone.
Wow what a read! Shari Dawn is one amazing character. Her introduction to the series is out of this world. I love how stubborn she is, reminds me of myself in a way. This book is full of surprises, shocking moments and laughter all in one. I couldn’t put this book down once I started to read. I highly recommend this book series
I have read this book and giving my honest review. Not what I usually read but I wanted to have a change and give it a go. What a book full of surprises and twists . You feel as if you are in the book . Enjoyed hope you enjoy as much as I did .
Wow there is alot going on in this fast paced dynamic read. Monsters, drama and non stop action makes this book so awesome. The characters are real and the story can be a bit much at times but all in all it is a fantastic book!
A fantasy unlike any other I've read - Shari protects her home and the realms of many others without anyone knowing. I love that she's a hero used to doing it alone with know credit, so being thrust into the limelight is confronting on so many levels. An intriguing start to the series!
A wonderful story. Shari isn’t aware of the powers she has, until Ronan and his band come where she lives. Now she’s committed to helping save the people. Enjoyable.
