Not a whimper, nor a bang--the end comes with a squall of entropy shrieking from the ravenous maw of death itself. The message is clear: Unicron has arrived. The Transformers lock into a desperate bid to save Rom's homeworld from the world-killer--but why has Unicron chosen this world on his path to Cybertron... and Earth? The biggest story in the history of Transformers starts now: for Unicron's arrival can mean nothing less than the end of a universe.
This is a single comic book issue given in the Free Comic Book Day event of 2018, featuring the beginning of the storyline “Transformers: Unicron”..

UNICRON IS COMMING! UNICRON IS COMMING!
After a decade of IDW Publishing with the successful franchise of Transformers, creating its own storyline, beginning from stratch, showing a new timeline, keeping the highlights of what is Transformers is about.
I read myself, two of the many titles, Transformers: Hail Megatron and Transformers: Robots in Disguise, which I enjoyed a lot both of them.
And certainly, Transformers, not only had its own roster of characters, but also they did crossovers with other iconic 80’s animated franchises like G.I. Joe (that also already had similar crossovers with them in the past), but even with Visionaries, and now they are having a crossover with…
…ROM: Space Knight!!!
Since this Transformers timeline is different from previous ones…
…it’s only now that they will have to deal with the greatest menace that Transformers ever faced…
…Unicron!
In this special FCBD issue, you’ll realize that Unicron isn’t attacking worlds at random, but there is a design after it.
And during the following months, IDW Publishing will have the great saga that gets its 10-years’ run to an end.
Man, this bums me out each time: Ruckley had a decent run, but it didn't compare to Phase 2. Barber and Roberts just nailed it, although if you ask me, I'll tell you Roberts is my favorite. Barber's no slouch, but Roberts seeded things years in advance, in panels that made you laugh, that you thought weren't of any importance and then just wait for it, no a little longer...
That being said, Unicron ushered in Barber and Roberts leaving the Transformers universe, or at least these writing gigs, as it pretty much imploded the universe - kinda? - and ushered in Ruckley's run. Which again, wasn't bad, but wasn't nearly as good as this universe. (Yes, some weird stuff from Furman was fixed, but it could have shed without shedding these writers. I suspect it was more 'this isn't selling well, shakeup', but it wasn't worth it for me.)
I'm not as on board maybe just a little bit because of that, but other than that making me sad, but overall, I don't think this was quite as good as Barber's earlier work: Robots in Disguise was my favorite run, although Optimus Prime wasn't bad either. (Then again, Optimus Prime's sister series was Lost Light which brought back a couple favorites - with Roberts writing them - so while I subscribed issue by issue, I always looked forward to LL more than OP.)
My thoughts about this series are weird, they'll probably continue to be.
Last year was bad: I got a mental health diagnoses that derailed my life and so I wasn't on for the last half or so, I knew something was wrong before then. I hope to be on more this year.
Didn't really get into this one for reasons that are pretty obvious for me, I haven't been keeping up with the TF books or really anything IDW so as this is the beginning of the final chapter for those books, I was a bit lost. Though it wasn't like I had no idea what was going on, I know the basic status quo of this universe through word of mouth but having not read most of it myself left me feeling like I was watching a random episode of a show someone recommended me instead of starting at the beginning like I should have, which again is on me. Though I gotta say, it's gotta be pretty annoying for Rom fans that they've now revealed his armor is connected to the Transformers in a Free Comic Book Day tie in that didn't even advertise he would be in it. I mean, I haven't heard ether way and I'm not a Rom fan myself, but if I was I can imagine myself being annoyed at it as that has happened to me with other properties before.
This was the lead-in issue for the Transformers: Unicron mini-series. It was released as part of Free Comic Book Day in 2018. It is interesting but I wish I had the rest of the series. We open with Unicron destroying a world which from the story may be a Transformers colony, though the inhabitants seem to me more human than anything else. As well as the Transformers aboard the rescue ship is Rom, a Spaceknight. The Spaceknights were a separate line of toys issued by Parker Brothers/Hasbro. As such it is part of IDW's Hasbro Comic Universe. Truth be told this wasn't a bad comic book. Unicron here seems to be more like Marvel's Galactus. Still an interesting story, even if at times it seemed confusing. Happy reading.
Honestly, Transformers: Unicron #0 (FCBD 2018), wasn't the best Transformers comic I've ever read, but it was definitely entertaining. I've loved Unicron ever since The Transformers: The Movie (1986) came out. I DO love the fact that this comic had Rom the Spaceknight in it. I was recently asking my friends what happened to the character, since we haven't seen him in a long while. And then he appears in the Transformers universe! Transformers: Unicron is the beginning of the end of IDW's 13-year publication of Transformer comics. All things will conclude in this comic book series.
Liked this way more than I expected to. Having read NONE of the previous comics I couldn't follow everything, but enough to like it. I also found a handy abbreviated timeline in the back leading up to this point. Might have been helpful to put in the front of the comic that it was back there. Maybe they did and I missed it? Anyway, it was good! Made me feel young again.
I liked what I read so far and looking forward to getting started on the rest (1-6). Ever since the movie, Unicron has been an intriguing character; can't wait to learn more.
