This is the 5th book in this series, and the 5th book in the LitRPG genre I have read.
This is the one I have enjoyed the most. The difference between Cari and Hal in how the act and live in Fantasma is so interesting to read. Hal focussed on luck whilst Cari is focussing more on her ability to fight and navigate the sea. Because a lot of this book plays out on the ocean it is totally different from the other books, I liked to experience these kind of sea 'battles' instead of all the pvp combat we have seen in the other books. I can't wait to start the last book in this trilogy surrounding Cari dix.
This book isn't nearly as insufferable as the first book in the trilogy. Cari seems to have magically lost that giant chip on her shoulder between books. Not that this book is free of the, 'you're just a girl' stuff. Thankfully, most of it comes from the empire to the east and we hadn't seen any of their culture before so it's entirely possible they were always like that.
About half way through the book is the "Big Reveal" of that SUPER SUBTLE plot point from the first book. What follows is a repeat of the comedy of errors from the end of the first book as Cari runs into barrier after barrier, side quest after side quest as she tries to reach her goal, only now it's done for half a book rather than the last 1/10th.
A quick word on the mechanics of the world. In all the previous books, Hal had to switch classes to gain their abilities and that locked out his previous class while he was doing it. Cari... just gets to have raider/sailor skills, while keeping her duelist skills... and apparently blacksmith skills at the same time, why not. O_o As you might expect, this makes everything SUPER EASY for her. Rather than have to make herself weaker with melee skills for a time in order to gain the new abilities, she can now out fight anyone and out sail/shoot anyone, and teach master blacksmiths new tricks. Hal already bordered on being a Marry Sue and this is a step beyond that.
About Hal btw. It's starting to seems the whole point of depowering magic was just to neuter Hal, shoving him into a secondary character in the very small B plot. It's a shame since I'm much more interested in his return to Fantasma than Cari's.
Ok, starting point is that (a) over read other Jamie Davis series in other non-LitRPG genres and loved all of them and (b) I’m actually a big fan of LitRPG as my husband (who I met decades ago when he was the DM in our college gaming group), and kids (20 and 17) are all gamers. So no surprise that I totally enjoyed the first book (Accidental Duelist) in Jamie Davis and C.J. Davis’ Accidental Champion series, from its real world intro to its RPG world bulk. So now we have book 2, Accidental Raider. Welcome back Cari Dix. I sooo want to be you. Welcome back to a great swashbuckler world. Pirate Raiders. A Missing Heir. An empire in trouble. Great fun and great adventure that’s perfectly written and perfectly enjoyable. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next (sadly final) book in this trilogy.
Dread Raider Cari and the crew of the Vengence continue to chase down the pirate ship that had been raiding up and down the coast. Captain Cari’s missions ranged from rescuing hostages, and slaves, to boarding, taking, and sinking raider ships. Imperial Navy ships along with the raider captains were in league with the Duke of Cairn to take over the Empire. Meanwhile, Hal and Mona Dix, aware of Cari entering Fantasma due to the summons by the Emperess, came after her. They made their way to the Crystal Palace to speak to the Emperess. With her information, Hal and Mona were sure they knew where Cari had appeared in Fantasma. Over the years, magic had become corrupted, and Hal was unable to create portals. So they had a long overland journey to Camden to search for Cari. Since this is a lightweight LitRPG, Cari gained levels and skills as she accumulated experience. Cari was amassing quite a reputation.
Generally, this genre is not one I pick up. However, there are a couple authors who write this genre that I really like and this author is one of them. We continue Cari’s adventures in the second book, and she is cleaning up the raiders along the coast. But, her enemies are still after her, and it isn’t long before she runs into trouble because Cari knows something that could change everything. This series continues to be a fun, well-written adventure with very interesting characters. I generally don’t like LitRPG, but those elements are so skillfully woven into the plot, I even enjoy those elements. They don’t take over the book, just enhance the fun. I thoroughly enjoy this series, and I do highly recommend this latest installment! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.
The adventures on the high seas continue in this 2nd book of the series
Cari Dix is now Dread Raider Dix, scourge of all pirates of the seas, in this sequel to Accidental Duelist. But fear not: mom and dad are coming. Well, trying to. It would not work well if they could meet with their daughter that easy, so they remain in the background, while Cari untangles the plots. The use of the litrpg abilities is still a cheat - but that's the whole premise. It remains big fun, and the acquisition and judicious application of special abilities propel the story. I still deduct one star because it's still a cheat.
At least, we know the title of the next book, despite it missing from the booklist: next up, she's the Accidental Champion, of course.
Action and adventures on the high seas , book one was good but this was brilliant totally fantastic, my heart was beating a million miles an hour , I must of said oh my god a billion times , Cari definitely skating by the seat of her pants in this book doing what ever she needed to do, one of the best heroines and leaders I've read, brave and fierce, it was non stop dueling, battles , plots and rescues . I really, really ,really need the next book , I need to know what happens next, this is going to kill me to wait , please don't let it be too long. Another excellent book.
My issue with this book, is that while I understand that the MC is Carrie, I didn’t get to really see Hal or Mona do anything impressive, which given the circumstances is understandable. I’m just really hoping that they finally DO something next book, since despite knowing that Carrie is alive, they also know who went after her. Lemme tell you, in their position, knowing that someone went after my daughter, there would be VERY little that could stop me from planning all sorts of unpleasantness to follow it up
I've read the first trilogy and now this one. I'm impressed! Sometimes litrpg tends to be less professional than other genres, but this author is a pro. The grammar is great, the plots have good solid arcs in each book and across each trilogy. The characters are powerful but grow into their heroics in a satisfying way. I've listened to the audible and read the texts, going back and forth and not are high quality. Even pros sometimes stumble with a generational sequel, but the accidental series pull it off! Bravo!
I started with the Accidental Traveler series and loved it. I was seriously disappointed in this effort, I was cought off guard by the insanely feministic disposition of the heroine. It's fine when it's appropriate, but it's as if the authors goes out of their way to find things that could be considered offensive and then I have to listen to our heroine make the BIGGEST deal out of it. I got thru the first book, but got stranded on the second. Blah.
An excellent continuation of a wonderful series. There’s fighting, danger, and suspense. True love, Friendship and losses.
Spoiler
The parents are still comically 3 steps behind and seem to have lost their sense of adventuring. Lol I find it amusing and truthful their reactions in the steps they take “to protect their defenseless little girl” and yet not acknowledge everything she has accomplished. Smh typical parent.
This was poorly written with unneeded sections using tired tropes. The entire concept driving it is solid, but the author is unable to properly write for it. I had to force myself to finish this one and will not be bothering with the last. It saddens me that such a good series as the last one is followed by this crap.
This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story. I have read a lot of stories from Jamie Davis, this story was no different. I absolutely loved this story just like all the others I have read from him. He is a great author and this book just proves it all over again.
This is the second book that I’ve read and I’m looking forward to seeing the third one. They inspire me to finish my book that I’ve been writing, and I hope that it turns out as good as these!
This is the fifth book in the series and it's even better than the first I can't wait to read the next book in the series. The intricacies of the caricatures are amazing . You have to read this book.
Cari Dix is back in this 2nd book in the Accidental Champion series, having helped the Royal Dragoons save Prince Timron to escape the Duke in the 1st book. The 1st book saw Cari find Fantasma, rediscover the lost magical place of her youth, and realise that her parents had hidden it from her for years, lying to her at great lengths to try and make her forget. Cari had become an accomplished Duelist in the real world, with this obsession for all things that relate to that world. It is by a stroke of luck that she happens to find the message sent by a desperate Empress to her former friend, Hal Dix, and finds herself in Fantasma. Time passes differently in Fantasma, so for the 14yrs that have passed for Cari, it has been 80yrs in Fantasma, meaning that the stories of the great Hal Dix and the Dix Family, have passed into Legend. It has become somewhat of a joke now that every time Cari says her name, people laugh at her, thinking it is funny someone named her after the lost Princess. That is, until they get to know her, and see the amazing things that she can do. Here she meets what remains of the Dragoons, and Rodrigo, who she joins in the adventures of book 1. She also meets Stefan, a young officer of the Dukes forces, as well as the crew of the Vengeance (and there are some brilliant Easter Eggs to Pop Culture references all throughout these books – my favourite has to be ‘The Dread Pirate Cari’ from The Princess Bride. At the end of the 1st book, Cari had left to return to the Vengeance, and now, in this 2nd book, we get to see the results of this, as ‘The Dread Pirate Cari’, Teenage Girl (much to the disgust of so many of the Raiders, and Dukes men) on the Quarter deck of a ship, happily sails up and down the coast. Whilst you would think the fearsome Raider Captains would never be scared of a Teenage Girl and a single ship, Cari, with her able Lieutenant’s Stefan and Rodrigo, so ever desperate to please Cari in a never ending competition for her feelings, have one of the most capable ships on the ocean. This is only made even more powerful by Cari’s special ‘Sea Skills’, as well as her innate abilities gained from her knowledge from back home – especially her knowledge of engineering etc – that give her incredible bonus skills in Tactics, Strategy and Warfare. What is really great about this book, is the intense world building that has gone into creating this story, the knowledge and depth that has gone into making this gritty and realistic (maybe not ‘Master and Commander’ realistic, but certainly at a level that is going to pass for 95% of people, and give us a really good feeling that we are on the decks of the ship, trading shot with another ship, watching the sails gust, splinters of wood fly from a hit. Davis has covered all the different positions on the ship, as well, from the Command Crew, to the Carpenter’s Mate who worked below deck repairing the ship. The features that Davis has portrayed in the gun battles in the Naval warfare is just exceptional. This is a stunning book, not just for the outstanding character work, or the riveting story, but for the comprehensive and thorough detail that has gone into researching the story to make it as in-depth, intelligent, gritty and realistic as possible, and this just adds a real level of immersion and enjoyment to the story that is just Masterful. Add to this the spectacular and absolutely extraordinary Character work, and you have one of the best LitRPG’s on the market. Cari’s character is just outstanding, her growth from petulant, self-centered teenager, who just thinks she is invincible, and has a very narrow minded view of the world, to this extraordinary, powerful, intelligent, thoughtful Champion, is just mind-blowing. Even her growth around having to kill, which initially, she was so nauseous, she almost threw up, even though it was life or death, and no other choice. Her maturity in accepting that in some cases this cannot be avoided, and more to the point, it is not right to expect others to shoulder the burden, especially when she is their Leader, or at least to be mindful of the consequences. Her understanding of the sacrifices of Command, and the challenges, all of this leads to an absolutely brilliant Character that you get so attached to. There are some very clever statements about issues in society today, with obvious discussions of Equality, Misogynistic behaviour, Women’s Rights, Bullying, Acceptance (No matter the species!!), Hate, and so many other clever little references that whilst they make you think, they don’t necessarily either take away from the actual story, nor do they stop you enjoying the story or stop you reading. It is just a masterful piece of writing. For those that enjoy a great LitRPG, there is more than enough to keep the reader interested, but it is not too overwhelming so as to get annoying, or ruin the flow of the story. This is a spectacular Action/Adventure Fantasy LitRPG story, with action from the 1st to the last pages, and just such a great story that you will not be able to put it down. Davis has covered every aspect of what you could hope for in a story of this type, and then added more, so that it is truly amazing. This will be one that I happily read/listen to again!!
