Upon returning home from a friend’s funeral, high school teacher Mike Wells gets in the middle of a fight between two high school boys resulting in his suspension. Mike soon finds himself implicated in the death of the district superintendent who suspended him. Knowing he didn’t kill his boss, Mike sets out to find out who did. He is assisted by his old Army buddy, Tommy who served on the same tank crew as Mike, in looking into who was actually behind this murder. It is during his suspension, Mike discovers his sister had been on the receiving end of an abusive marriage for the past twenty years in which Mike feels the need to fulfill his role as big brother in this matter. While assisting a local private investigator to work off his legal fees, Mike gets involved in the search for several missing teenage girls. The clock is racing to find these girls and Mike staying ahead of the police’s investigations of him.
Do not judge a book by its cover; this is not a war story. I found this story suspenseful and the characters rough but relatable. It is a quick read and I enjoyed it and recommend it.
