All Georgia Rae Winston wants is to fall in love. Life, of course, has other plans.
Georgia’s biggest challenge in the farming town of Wildcat Springs, Indiana, is figuring out how to win Evan Beckworth’s heart. Until the day she discovers the body of a former student in the woods.
She assumes it was an accident. When she starts to suspect it wasn’t, it stirs memories of her father’s murder nine years earlier. A murder never solved. Georgia refuses to let that happen this time.
Not necessarily the wisest decision.
As Georgia works with the sheriff’s department’s newest detective, Cal Perkins, she finds her heart slipping into his hands. But her head is pummeled with conflicting evidence and anonymous threats of severe consequences if she digs any deeper.
In the end, Georgia faces a paralyzing choice. Ignore the dark secrets inside the family and friends who surround her or be willing to risk her own life to uncover the truth.
Marissa Shrock is a survivor of many awkward blind dates and many years of teaching middle school. Both provide excellent inspiration for her fictional yarns.
Since childhood, she’s loved to read a variety of genres, so her own work includes dystopian thrillers and cozy mysteries. She’s the author of the Emancipation Warriors Series and the Georgia Rae Winston Mystery Series. Her debut novel, The First Principle, was a Carol Award Finalist.
Marissa enjoys playing golf, building elaborate LEGO creations, and traveling to new places. Her home is in Indiana, where she’s surrounded by corn and soybean fields.
Georgia is a good Christian woman farming grain in Indiana. She's also living in fear of becoming an old maid.
When she discovers a body while harvesting a bean field, she meets the usual cozy supercop, Cal. She starts poking around her small town, looking for answers. Somebody tries to kill her. She makes a new friend, there's a couple of new romances, and a guy with a man-bun gets tossed to the curb.
Atheists might not like it, but it's a fairly good mystery.
3.75⭐️ Cute and fun but talks wayyyyy too much about church, religion, and only dating a Christian man. Felt a little like it was getting shoved down my throat.
4 Star review Deadly Harvest (Georgia Rae Winston #1) by Marissa Shrock
Audio Review:
Marissa Shrock is a new author to me although I have listened to a few books from narrator Jennifer Jill Araya before. I enjoyed this clean, Christian cozy mystery and would be happy to listen to more in the series. I don’t often listen to Christian books but I found that the suspense and mystery was so good that I was not fixated on that aspect of the story.
I liked Georgia Rae Winston and her band of friends as I found them easy to relate. Detective Cal Perkins certainly caught my eye as he tried to keep Georgia Rae safe whilst trying to solve the case.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It’s a cozy mystery and one that I found thoroughly entertaining. There are many twists, turns and surprises in Deadly Harvest as Georgia Rae and her band of friends follow the clues and I have to say that I was taken by surprise on a couple of occasions.
The narrator did a fabulous job and certainly kept me entertained. This was a a book filled with secrets, miss communication and clues to satisfy my detective spirit. The intrigue and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened to this story.
I was given a copy of this audio book from the narrator and have voluntarily left this review.
This was a great start to a new Midwest cozy series! Georgia is a farmer in Wildcat Springs, IN who is trying to follow God’s will while trying to find the right guy for her since it doesn’t seem to be her best friend, Evan. She discovers the body of a student she had years ago on her farm and everyone thinks it was a hunting accident until the evidence points to homicide. Georgia is determined to find her murderer since she was never able to find her father’s and against her family and friend’s wishes for her to stop, she keeps digging deeper and deeper even after threats have been made. I found Georgia’s character, along with most of the rest very realistic and relatable, with their every day problems, wavering faith, and miscommunication. The little town of Wildcat Springs was your regular small farming town where everyone knows everyone and they’re a tight knit community of multiple generations. Some of the relationships in the book seemed like it was built for teenagers instead of people in their 20’s-30’s, but it flowed nicely with the story and hope to see more of Georgia and Cal’s. I can’t wait to continue this series to see if she ever finds out who her dad’s killer was. This book was filled with mystery, multiple suspects, twists and turns, romance, and tons of prayer. Jennifer did another fantastic job with this narration! She uses different voices for each character and keeps you hooked from start to finish. I love the way she can bring every character and suspenseful moment to life! *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I received a free copy from the author for my honest review.
At first I wasn't very impressed with the characters at the beginning of the story. They acted quite immaturely and the main character, Georgia Rae, has a problem with cussing in her head. I'm glad she didn't let those words fly in the story, because I never would have finished it. Several times people cussing up a storm was mentioned, but I'm glad that the author didn't put the words in the story - thank you!
As I continued to read I got more into the story. The suspens was very well written and I had no idea who-dun-it until the end.
I appreciated Cal and his reasoning for not going to Georgia's church. I wish all of her characters would have that attitude. He wanted a Church that showed respect for God and where sin wasn't down played. Amen!
I gave it three stars because I almost didn't continue reading the story with twenty-something and thirty year old characters not acting their ages, but rather having the emotions and reactions of teenagers. I'm glad I kept reading.
This is a great Christian cozy mystery. There is quite of bit of suspense and several well-placed red herrings. The characters are realistic although at first, I found a few of the characters a little immature for their ages. As the story progressed the characters seemed to mature and work out their differences. The storyline was entertaining and well developed.
I listened to the audio version of this book. Narrator Jennifer Jill Araya does a wonderful job of giving each character a voice and bring the story to life. I had no problem knowing which character was which. Her voice acting draws the listener in and is an asset to this book.
I received a copy of this book at my request, and I have voluntarily left this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.
This was a fairly cute cozy mystery. I was kept guessing. I enjoyed the characters. But I didn't like the romance really. I didn't feel the connection really. IT was also a little too heavy on the religion for me. It had a very old fashioned feel in a modern setting. I'm not sure if I will read the next one.
As soon as the character mentioned they were "not a feminist" and treated it like a dirty word after all the religious musings (a have nothing against religion until it enforces subjugation, then im out)
I started this series with book four and five but enjoyed them so much I had to go back to the beginning to found out what I had missed. I enjoyed it but the Christian side of the story was more apparent with this book, with them offering up prayers before making decisions. The group of friends do know each other through prayer studies. Don't get me wrong the author isn't trying to convert anyone and it is tastefully done. The characters are likeable, I especially like her two best friends who in there own way can be quite funny and caring. This is cozy so of course you get a fun and complicated love interest to get in the way of the investigation, especially as one of the hunky guy's in the police detective and the main suspect is a relative. There are a few explosive (haha) twists that you don't see coming. The mystery it's self is interesting, with plenty of suspects to keeping you guessing. I liked how it played out and I didn't guess the killer. Off to start the next book. Georgia Rae Winston is a busy farmer with crops and her non existent love life on her mind. Until she discovers a former student dead in the woods on her property. She was dressed for hunting but without permission just what was she doing there? And more importantly who killed her? The police focus in on Georgia's cousin and before long she finds herself proving to prove him innocent by providing the police with plenty of other suspects. The dead girl had been wild in her youth, before finding God but could something in her past be the reason for her death? as if a relative being in the hot seat isn't enough to get her involved Georgia is shocked to find a letter from the dead girl asking for her help. Armed with her notes, files and questions Georgia is going to do just that, help. Even if it means she becomes the target.I I really like the narrator. I have listened to a few books by her and they are always a pleasure to listen to because she gives each character there own voice and the hours just fly by. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This excellently crafted mystery novel introduces us to amateur detective, Georgia Rae Winston. Georgia isn’t thrown into detecting by whim or chance or a notion of being a busy body or butinsky. She is thrown into it when she discovers the murdered body of an old friend in a field on Georgia’s farm. What first looked like a hunting accident is soon ruled a murder. The shock of finding the body becomes even more complicated when Georgia receives a letter from the dead woman asking for Georgia’s help is resolving an unnamed problem. Georgia is also driven by the unsolved murder of her father several years earlier. The case becomes even more complicated when a member of Georgia’s own family is arrested for the woman’s murder. Georgia’s own life is threatened when she continues to investigate. The author, Marissa Shrock, presents a fascinating mystery with a multitude of potential suspects, each with a plausible motive. Ms. Shrock places her story in a fictional town in Indiana and creates a believable story world of a small town farming community with families that have been there for generations. The author brings the community to life with cleverly crafted characters and relationships that extend back years. Ms. Shrock also adds believable romantic complications to Georgia’s life without slipping into a formulaic exposition of the romance genre. Georgia stands out as a character. Dedicated and determined to run her own farm and to find the killer. She is strong in many areas, but also flawed. And the tension between the two draws us to the character. The characters surrounding her offer both support and frustration. I particularly enjoy Georgia’s self-deprecation. She’s aware of her weaknesses and doesn’t take herself too seriously. The writing is solid and strong and creative. I look forward to the next Georgia Rae Winston mystery.
Farmer extraordinaire, Georgia Rae Winston, spends most of her time in her combine, but when she discovers a body on the edge of her field, she wonders if the woman’s death was foul play and not the accident authorities are claiming. Especially after receiving a mysterious letter from the deceased. Her skills as a farmer soon turn into playing detective as she finds herself as an amateur sleuth, piecing together the mystery.
Georgia’s life is turned upside down with this puzzle, but it becomes even more complicated when she has to decide between feelings for a longtime friend or the new sheriff in town. Can she overcome this obstacle while trying to stay alive with threats on her life?
Deadly Harvest is a delight! I loved reading this cozy mystery. It kept me glued to the pages to unravel the mystery along with Georgia, trying to piece together all the clues. The plot was well written and engaging. It kept me guessing to the very end.
The characters came to life on the page. I loved Georgia’s friends. Kind of reminded me of Nancy Drew’s best friends George and Bess. They were always there for Georgia at her beckon call, keeping her on her toes.
The imagery used throughout was effective. I could see myself in the combine with Georgia in the fields and in different areas of the town while she played detective.
I can’t wait to find out how Georgia’s love life will turn out. Maybe we’ll find out more in the next installment of the Georgia Rae Winston Mystery Series. I will be waiting!
I give Deadly Harvest four combines. This excellent mystery will keep you plowing through the clues to find out who did it!
**An e-copy of this book has been provided by the author in exchange for my honest review.
What a delightful find! I don’t know of many cozy mysteries that also fit into the Christian Fiction category and Deadly Harvest is an excellent example of how well that works. I loved it — but do be aware that there is no mistaking the inspirational elements throughout the story. Prayer, scripture, bible study, friends who talk about Jesus and who are striving to follow Him. The characters are realistically flawed so this definitely isn’t a sugary sweet Utopia kind of read. Just be prepared to be uplifted in the midst of all the murder and mayhem! And yes, it actually works, as odd as that seems.
Love that Georgia has an unusual occupation for a heroine. She’s a farmer, spending her days out in the fields and working in the barn and doing all the things you would associate with farm life. She has an interesting backstory mystery which I think will play out more in future stories but in this first book in the series, Georgia stumbles upon a body on her property and the race is on to expose a killer…and new a literary amateur sleuth is born!
Georgia’s gutsy and even a bit brazen when it comes to investigating. I enjoyed how up front she is and especially appreciate that she keeps the police in the loop when her snooping produces results. And speaking of the police…there is a new detective in town who just happens to be single. Yes, that’s a cozy mystery cliche and I love it!
I enjoyed listening to the audio edition narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya . She did a fantastic job with these characters and delivered a compelling performance.
Happy Sidenote: Deadly Harvest is currently free on Kindle right now.
I want to thank Marissa Shrock, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the eBook Kindle copy of Deadly Harvest ~ Georgia Rae Winston ~ Book 1 that I won in the Giveaway.
Not many murder mysteries start with a Bible study group and Deadly Harvest did just that. Georgia, is a tall, just turned thirty years old woman that wants to find her forever guy but so far just manages to be friends with the guys she dates. She owns, works and runs her own farm and likes what she does.
The day after the prayer meeting with her friends she and her Grandpa are harvesting soy beans when she finds a dead body beside her field of a young woman she knows. This starts her looking for the killer along with a new police detective in town that warns her to stay out of it but she just can't when the chief suspect is her cousin J.T.
A threat on her combine screen, a bomb to her truck, a new security system and the killer still gets to her. Georgia Rae turns out to be right about who the killer is and the police detective admits she was right and it ended with the unlikely killer caught and her cousin cleared. A Christian murder mystery was a pleasant surprise and very enjoyable.

As you get to know the characters and Georgia’s knack for curiosity, you realize just how small of a town she lives in. It reminded me a lot of growing up. While I didn’t grow up on a farm I did grow up in a small town and everyone knows everyone and kids never get away with much cause by the time they come home someone has already called your parents ha ha. I throughly enjoyed this book. So much so that I ended up reading the next two books and kept reminding myself to not forget to write reviews for each one. This first book had a slight feel of high school crushes and drama but it really helps to see the characters grow. I love the Christian aspect in the stories. It’s not preachy at all and has just the right amount to remind you that god has his plans and many times in our lives we need to just let him take over and watch how things play out.
Glad I tried out this author as this is a good, sensible read that could really happen. A heroine who feels unloved (always friends but never girlfriend), down to earth and content with her height and weight. As a farmer she has gotten used to the trials that nature sends but finding a body by the field she is harvesting is not in nature's remit. This is the death of a young woman, who she gave piano lessons to and she has a gut feeling that this was no accident. Mix in a whole line up of suspects, throw in fraud, computer hacking, betrayal, a bombing and a whole deluge of men after a really dry season for a read that will have you guessing until the end. With characters that come to life quickly and complete. A really good read.
A delightful read! Georgia Rae Winston is a farmer who is still mourning her father's murder. Her frustration at failing to solve her father's death has lit a fire for her to solve Wildcat Spring's latest death, a body Georgia finds while harvesting.
It is refreshing to read a Christian novel where the characters are believers but also express a normal amount of doubt about applying their faith to their lives. The book also discusses church and bible study as a natural and normal part of life. There is a nice cross section between married and unmarried, including widows.
As a Hoosier, I enjoyed the Midwestern references, a great slice of Americana. I will definitely read this author again.
This is a Christian mystery, which includes a number of references to Bible Study and the like. There are no swear words or questionable content, which may be important to a number of readers. The author writes well and the characters are likeable. Unfortunately, the mystery just didn't grab me the way I wanted it too. However, the ending satisfies the mystery and it is overall a good book. I would have given it only 3 stars but added another for the clean language and situations, which is so very haad to find in a mystery.
Started out slow not much interest, but I never stop reading a book once I start. Glad I did. A farm girl was in the fields one day and found a dead girl. She knew who she was. It bothered her - what really happened was this just an accident or what. She got involved in investigating it till someone send her a message to leave it alone & stay out of it. The police had a few clues but not enough evidence to arrest anyone. She also was in the middle of choosing what man she wanted in her life. A prior sweetheart on the new hunky cop thats running the case of the dead girl.
bunches of them in here. and the issues they share range from the predictable jealousies of unrequited love to the unpredictableness of murder. Georgia Rae Winston weathers them all while racing to clear the name of the front running suspect. the dialogue and especially the first person narrative are often humorous and even sometimes thoughtful but are also reactionary and tend to persuade a reader that the entire cast needs a timeout so they can grow up a bit more before tackling life as they sow it.
This is the first in the series. The main character is Georgia who decides to take over the family farm and loves running it. She thinks the love of her life is Evan who thinks he loves Kelsey. Then while out in the fields she finds a body and that is when everything starts to go nuts. She starts to investigate and then someone tires to kill her by blowing up her truck. Can she figure this out before it's too late ?
It took me a while to get into it, and to start with the way two guys were talking together about a new love interest seemed immature to me. However, I'm glad I stayed with it as the storyline was good and the characters grew on me. There was mystery and intrigue. The murder of a young woman and also a cold case murder which needed solving. I suspect the cold case will continue through the series. I am interested in reading the rest of the series.
This was a freebie on Chirp. It's the first that I've listened to/read by this author. I enjoyed the cozy mystery a good bit. I would say, to anyone considering reading, that it is very focused on religion (prayer, church, etc.). This is not something that bothers me, but I know that it might bother some.
Overall, I enjoyed this cozy, and I would consider reading some of the others in the series.
This book was very well written. It had a clear concise plot, excellently developed characters. The book was great. I read it on a small trip with my family over the weekend. I don't want to give any of the plot away for people who are thinking of reading it. I will say it is a must read though!
The first few chapters really held my attention. Although the middle slowed down somewhat, it gave me a breather which helped as the end really racheted up a knotch.. The characters were well developed and the descriptions held that perfect balance: not too much, not too little. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. It was different, had an unique spin, and held me until the very last page.
Good start to this series about a young Indiana farmer and her family, friends, and walk with God. Prayer and religion are mentioned frequently. The twist in this series is that the main character’s father was killed years ago and a new sheriff’s detective plans to investigate the cold case. They both happen to be single…
I got this ebook free, and it may have sat on my Kindle for a while if a lady had not gushed about this series in a Facebook group I am in. So I read it today, and loved it. The series is first person, which I am not a huge fan of, but it worked for this book. The book was entertaining, amusing, and had a lot of great truth woven throughout it. I already am planning on reading #2
I thought this book was intriguing. It is a murder mystery/trying to find a romantic partner book. It kept me guessing all the way through and involved in everything that was going on. I enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed this Christian, mystery/romance novel. It is a story of ordinary people who are dealing with the crime of murder. It is also a story about getting to know another person.
