Marginalized young women have a tendency to disappear in New Mexico. PCT Bounty hunter Dakota del Toro knows the local vampire coven and their pet werewolves are to blame, but the badge she carries means she requires pesky things like admissible evidence and warrants to act—however when a bereaved mother comes to Dakota for help in recovering her daughter from the Lobos Diablos gang this bounty hunter will risk her career, her freedom, and her very life to bring Pilar Guzmán home.

Diego de Gama seems too good to be true—a handsome, wealthy, gallery owner who can dance and behave like a gentleman? What century is he from, anyway? On a night out on the town with the girls Dakota thinks she’s found a keeper, but Diego has a secret that could turn the archaic power structure of Santa Fe’s vampires on its head. However, he knows he can’t do it alone—and who would make a better compañera than the Cazadora herself? If only he could stop kissing her long enough to ask her…

Long ago, a fortune teller read Julia's palm and told her, “You’d better write this all down.” Julia has been writing, writing, writing, ever since. Somewhere along the line she earned a degree in fine art and traveled the world. Now she lives on a farm in Missouri with her darling husband, two criminal conures, one stubborn bulldog, one bad bunny, and possibly too many chickens.

But really, is there such a thing as too many chickens?

Loved this book! I am always a fan of vampire books but this one is now my favorite. A strong female heroine, twists and a mystery needing to be solved. Cannot wait for the next book!

I found the world created in this book immediately captivating, and didn’t realise how ready I was to read a romance with werewolves and vampires. The story wasn’t at all copycat or cliched and I ate up every page. Bounty hunter, Dakota del Toro is a tough, intelligent, relatable woman on a mission. Her love interest, Diego de Gama, may not be all he first seems but their chemistry is palpable and I loved them together. Julia de Barrioz’s writing style is rich, gripping and flows well throughout. I’ll be adding the rest of the series to my reading list for sure.

I feel the need to be vague with this review which isn't something I do very often, but I don't want to include spoilers, so I will do my best to give the book justice.

I wasn't sure what to expect reading this, so it was a pleasant surprise. Compañera centers around Dakota, a bounty hunter for the PCT (Preternatural Control Team). She is tasked with tranqing shifters and bringing them in. Some in her unit have studied to take down vampires, something she has yet to do as it is a daunting task. But Dakota is good at what she does, and she's drawing quite a bit of attention with her newest takedown.

She's recently met Diego and she cannot deny the attraction between them. But he might just be more than she realized, and that doesn't sit very well with her. While it's true he wants her companionship, there is so much more he and others want from her. She must choose which course of action she wants to take.

Compañera was a unique take on the world of vampires, especially in the sense that they didn't take the forefront in this book. I very much enjoyed that Dakota sat center stage. Tasked with finding the missing girls and then thrown into a hot mess with Federico. Dakota is a perfect heroine, she's strong and assertive. Though I do wonder how she is getting that extra push and I imagine I need to read on through the series to find out.

There was a lot of intensity in this book, a good mix of action and suspense, add in some supernatural elements and you have a perfect read! Cazadora will be up next in my TBR, very well done.

Compañera is the beginning of an urban fantasy series featuring supernatural characters - werewolves, vampires, and it even hinted at witches. This book follows the kick-ass main character, Dakota del Toro, as she gets on with her job as a "bounty hunter". Not really a bounty hunter though, more of a werewolf slayer. Except she doesn't slay, she knocks them out with tranquillisers and arrests them for their crimes much to the chagrin of her colleagues. The next thing she knows her life has flipped and she's getting embroiled into the seedy life of organised vampire crime, a revolution, and matters of the heart. So, yes, there's romance in this book. It's actually really quite romantic at times. But Diego was so slick that even I didn't mind the romance! It was also full of action and plot and you get to know a lot about the main character and her ambition which is ultimately to establish a legitimate and safe society for werewolves and vampires in today's modern world. A great spin on a genre I usually don't enjoy because they are more often than not it's rife with clichés and romantic plots, but I loved everything about this one: the author's writing style, the plot, the characters, the setting; and can't wait to continue with the series!

This was the perfect beach read!
I was drawn in immediately by the title and cover, but then reading that it was about vampire/werewolf hunters in the Southwest sealed the deal.

The female protagonist, Dakota del Toro, is smart and spunky and also very real and relatable. This is a world where vampires and werewolves exist and there’s an organization that hunts them down. Dakota works for this organization and is a highly skilled expert in werewolves. We learn she’s been burned one too many times and isn’t interested in romance -- until the mysterious, handsome, Diego de Gama shows up. They click, and soon she’s dating a wealthy guy who has an unusual accent, a grandparent’s understanding of technology, and generally seems older than his years. She uncovers the truth about him just a little too late and ends up in a dangerous situation, which kept me turning pages till the end. I look forward to reading more Dakota del Toro books by Julia de Barrioz.

Werewolves, vampires, and kick-butt heroines, is there anything new to write? Evidently yes! I loved the main character Dakota, a former art student (!) turned Preternatural Control Team enforcement agent. The different twist on vampires is fun and interesting. New Mexico is lovingly described and practically a character of its own. During this time of "stay at home" orders, being immersed in a different place is "just what the doctor ordered". I'll definitely be reading the next book!

So very very good!

This is an urban fantasy with a Latina twist and a satisfying romance subplot. The MC is a hunter of the supernatural specifically werewolves. When young women go missing, the hunter is determined to find out what happened to them. Along the way, she meets the mysterious de Gama who has captured her heart.

What I liked
I loved the steamy dance scenes and the world DeBarrioz has created. I love the way the Spanish words are incorporated giving this a distinct culture and setting the scene for the world she lives in. The plot points were solid and it sets up the next book nicely. I was left wanting to know more. Did I mention the romance? I'm fanning myself over here.

What I didn't like
It was far too short! That's it. I wanted the story to go longer.

Overall
I will definitely be getting the sequel. It was satisfying and hit all the right notes. I think anyone would enjoy this. But if you are into paranormal romances or urban fantasy, then you MUST get this book.

The beauty of this book is that though it has a fantastical side, you don't need to be a reader of fantasy to enjoy it. The language and plot are rich and I would recommend this book for fiction lovers of all genres. A fine read

I went in to this story not knowing what to expect. A few people had recommended it so I jumped in. I'm so glad I did.

This was an amazing read! I didn't realize I needed a paranormal romance in my life. It was different because it was mature read. I think that's what I liked the most. There was not a naive girl, wide eyed about vampires and werewolves. Dakota Del Torre was a strong, independent woman who knew her worth.

Her love interest Diego was a swoony, mysterious gentleman. Their chemistry was off the charts and I enjoyed the insta-attraction. Each of them are people of action so they didn't hold back.

Great read!

Julia DeBarrioz has a new life-long fan. Her writing had me hooked from the first page, and I could not put the book down until I had devoured every line! Warning, spoilers below.

The world of Companera is beautifully detailed and rich, with a magical realism that really pulls you in. From the fascinating PCT, to the lycanthrope gangbangers to the medieval fealty system the vampires adhere to, the worldbuilding itself is so well-thought out and wonderfully logical that I found myself admiring the author's way of weaving the supernatural into the world we know.

One of my favorite parts of the novel is its handling of the issue of human trafficking in a really touching and empowering way. I love the way in which the fantasy elements of the story highlight real world issues in a thoughtful manner, and the author's passion for the setting of New Mexico and its culture is so refreshing in a genre that is over saturated with the same old tired tropes.

This brings me to the setting, which I found myself absolutely engrossed by. My favorite fantasy novels always involve stories that are deeply entrenched in where they are set on all levels, from plot, to history, to geography and culture, and DeBarrioz' Companera fits the bill. In this novel the setting is not just background or a pretty landscape, but comes to life as a character of its own from the adobe styled architecture, to the scent of desert rain, to the mysterious catacombs, I am in LOVE!

Another of my favorite (yes, another) aspects of the narrative is the vampires. I adore the way DeBarrioz has crafted her vampires; they're atmospheric, charming and downright seductive. Diego de Gama is swoon-worthy and is reminiscent of those old school vampires from classic literature that I love, simply mesmerizing!

This leads me to Dakota del Toro, a fantastic lead oozing with grit, wit and it. I really enjoyed reading the story through her perspective, her snappy dialogue and fiery personality never leaving me with a dull moment. Her personality in contrast with Diego is simply just perfect, and exactly that kind of fire and ice that I love in my romances.

This is the first book I've read in the Dakota del Toro series, and just like Dakota at the end of the novel, has me wanting so much more. I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series, and am very much looking forward to reading all future works by Julia DeBarrioz!

After coming from watching 'Diableros' on Netflix I needed a book series like it. What I got was so much more in the form of Julia Debarrioz’s ‘Companera’. A rich world run with werewolves, vampires, even the possible - witch, and a bounty hunter team called the PCT who try to keep them in line. Our main Dakota del Toro was the real deal. I absolutely loved everything about her. It’s been a while since I’ve read a well-balanced female character who wasn’t all tough I can do bad all by myself so no one can hurt me. She was passionate about her job, well-aware of her strengths, her past pain but in the same vein wasn’t afraid to give her heart a chance and be vulnerable. She was a sharp, smart cookie and her banter with the classy, handsome art gallery curator, Diego *sigh* I could watch their flirty word match all day. Diego was the perfect match for her. He was respectable, calm, soft, strong and - a sure thing.

This world was so well thought out I didn’t want to leave it. I could picture myself in the middle of New Mexico in the fray, taking down werewolves, in a vampire’s den (castle), rescuing women, falling slowly in love – It was awesome. You fall in love with every character good and bad because this beautiful beginning of a novel breathes life into them. You either want to love them and protect them at all cost or surely get rid of them never to wrought havoc on this town ever again. The mythology and magic behind the vampire left me wanting to know more about their life and history. It was so intriguing and the connections and questions it brings up with Dakota is like dangling a carrot in my mind. I want it. I want to learn more about the how and the why. So book two is definitely getting read.

Thank you, Julia. It's been a while since I've been this excited about a book series.

Dakota del Toro is a bounty hunter for the PCT, an organization responsible for taking down supernatural beings in Santa Fe. Her specialty is werewolves and her weapon of choice is a tranquilizer gun. After taking them in, the weres are supposed to take medication to control their werewolf tendencies. And, it just so happens that Dakota's father is the inventor of this medication.

Young women, mostly illegal immigrants, are disappearing and Dakota believes that the worst of the werewolves, Juan Padilla, is responsible. Will she be able to find Pilar Guzman and her friends before it is too late?

When Dakota begins to fall for the handsome Diego de Gama, she doesn't realize how her life is about to change. Without giving away too much of the story, Dakota soon finds herself deeply involved in a group of vampires who want to start a revolution to get out from the rule of the ancient "king" of the local vampires.

I am a longtime fan of vampire stories, having read the original "Dracula" over 45 years ago. I am always looking for something new in this genre and this book definitely fits the bill. Add in the fact that I live in New Mexico and love the culture and scenery of Santa Fe and this book shoots to the top of my vampire list. I had previously read the first book in this series and was delighted to be given the chance to read this prequel through an online review group. The opinions expressed are totally my own.

I hope that Ms. DeBarrioz continues to write more books in this series because Dakota is one of my favorite kickass heroines! I can't wait to see how her relationship with Diego progresses (because you know it will!) and what adventures she finds herself in next.

Although Companera is not my usual genre, I will admit to being a bit of a Laurel K.Hamilton fan, and this book reminded me very much of her series.
The story was engaging and pacey, particularly in the second half. I had no trouble picturing the scenes as the writing style is very colourful and descriptive.
I liked Dakota, the spunky, female protagonist.
In my opinion, Companera would benefit greatly from a professional edit, but this did not detract from my enjoyment.
If you’re a fan of paranormal vampire-slayer types, this story has plenty you can get your pointy little teeth into.
Thank you Julia; I’m sure there’s much more to come! x

I won this book in a Giveaway here on Goodreads and my review is my honest opinion about the book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. My family is originally from Mexico so I could relate to the character in a small scale and having Spanish words scattered in the chapters was something that I greatly enjoyed.

In recent years there have been a ton of books written about vampires and werewolves but I loved how the author, Julia, wrote a story where the lead character didn't fell head over heels over a supernatural creature. The story follows Dakota Del Toro, a werewolves bounty hunter, and her quest to find where the missing young women of her city have disappeared to. She makes some enemies in her journey especially that of that the leaders of both the vampire and werewolf covens.

Dakota has been hurt by her ex boyfriend and it seems that she will never get over him until she meets a gallery owner. She is falling pretty quickly for him when it is revealed that he is a half vampire that is regarded as an outcast by the main coven. He later asks her to aid him and other vampires in a revolution that will free the coven of its present leader and into a new era. Dakota is intrigued and willing to help but stops any romance between them. Throughout the story we see Dakota embracing her new found strength and courage.

I really liked the story and can't wait to read more of her story.

4.5 Stars for this emotional, action-packed ride

A world where werewolves and vampires play in the shadows with the lives of others at their whim, sadistically using people for their pleasures and generally terrorizing New Mexico.

A feisty female bounty hunter, Dakota del Toro, who is on the Preternatural Control Team and has just been privately clued into the disappearance of a young woman, the unlucky prey of the creatures as they take those who can’t afford to be noticed.

A sexy, artistic rebel vamp who either has a real, intense connection with our heroine or is simply manipulating her to his own ends.

Any way you cut it this story and Dakota herself are exceptional. With her strong opinions and even stronger ability to somehow withstand what comes along with hunting these beings, we join her for an emotional, action-packed ride that does not disappoint.

Moreover, this tale seems to just scratch the surface of a world that is rife with rich history and detail on the players at hand, Dakota’s unique gifts, and so much more. The ending of this installment was fist-pumping satisfying, yet leaves so much more story to be told. It’s the perfect start to what promises to be an amazing series.

Dakota del Toro is a bounty hunter for the PCT, Preternatural Control Team that specializes in shifters. Several girls have gone missing lately and Dakota just knows it’s the local werewolves that are responsible but she knows that working for the PCT means that she needs to find proof before taking them out.

While investigating she meets a gallery owner, Diego de Gama that is more than human. Although having a hard time in relationships she finds herself drawn to Diego. Dakota knows that he wants her professional help and her so she is torn on how to react to him.

This is a great paranormal story. You have vampires, shifters, and a team that takes them out. I really liked Dakota. She is one tough cookie and doesn’t take crap from anyone. I love how she does the odd cases even if it causes a rift between her and the other bounty hunters.

As for the missing girls and the vampire drama, I loved this story. I couldn’t put the book down and couldn’t turn pages fast enough to see what was going to happen next. I loved this story and can’t wait to read more from Julia DeBarrioz.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

I was skeptical about reading Compañera because my taste is more about documentaries, college courses, or learning about new disciplines. But how wrong I was!! I am sorry my dear author/writer, Julia DeBarrioz, you have the skill to take a simple and common story and turn it into a movie. Although I am always very busy with my work schedule and my own writings, I found ways to read Compañera even at places we don’t spend much time at (if you can read between the lines). This story has everything: a well plotted romance, excitement and remarkable action, suspense, betrayal, mystery, it is a great fiction work. I am sorry but I don’t like to give away any spoilers, but I just hope this review can attract people to get this novel, and when you do (and have read few chapters), you will be driven to get the other two books: Cazadora and The Fiercest Star.
Compañera is saturated with an intense content and not hard to capture, I think this is why Julia DeBarrioz makes her work very special, the mind of the reader gets captured instantly and will not get disappointed. As crazy as this may sound, after reading this first novel of Julia DeBarrioz the reader will have the desire to be part of her novels (another vampire) and live the story yourself, that’s how captivating her work is.

I went in blind with this book. I didn't read what it was about and I just went with the flow. I was amazed at how much this book had me on the edge of my seat. My heart raced in some moments.

I feel like just saying a few things could giveaway the whole book.

Our girl is a bounty hunter for the supernatural (werewolves and vampires). When I think back from reading this, I imagine it to be kind of like a drug cartel who is being taken down by a vigilante.

I can't wait for another!

There is something so very satisfying about reading a story so good that even though its a prequel and you know what happens, you are entirely caught up in it and on the edge of your seat. You worry about the characters and you are yelling at them (in your head) - 'Stop keeping that a secret Diego! it will go badly for you.' 'Don't go in there without backup Dakota!'

Compañera is that kind of story!

And while the world of New Mexico is vividly portrayed it's really the characters that draw you into this. Dakota is a wonderful heroine whose habit of taking on off the book cases both lands her in trouble and puts her ahead of the other bounty hunters some of whom are already irritated at her pesky trait of remembering lycanthropes are people too.

And I was rooting for her and Diego so hard even though I knew that ahem something was going to come between them.

Highly recommended:)

Couldn't stop reading!

I was pleasantly surprised by this wonderful indie book. I wasn't sure I wanted to read about vampires and werewolves again (it has become cliched and overdone in recent years), but Dakota del Toro's journey as a bounty hunter, to find a missing young woman, who she suspects has fallen into the clutches of the local vampire or werewolf covens, proved to be anything but cliched. Dakota is tough and smart, but not so much that she doesn't have her weaknesses, including falling in love with the mysterious Diego do Gama, who may have more insight into the disappearance of the young woman than Dakota is willing to accept.

Well-written and wonderfully paced, this book "sunk it's teeth into me" and I finished it in 3 sittings, despite telling myself that I needed to stop and do other things. I couldn't stop reading. Loved it and looking forward to reading the next book.

For starters, I was sold when Dakota describes the man who’s chatting her up in a bar as, ‘Che Guevara meets James Dean’. I don’t think I’m giving anything away to say that it was almost love at first bite.
I knew I was going to like the young dedicated female bounty hunter and I wasn’t disappointed, we got along famously. There are nicely structured elements to the writing, the dark futuristic world of werewolves and vampires, the mysterious relationship between our protagonist and her love interest Diego; a worthy cause to fight for and a great buildup to a climactic end that as all good series should, leaves me wanting a sequel where hopefully Diego makes another appearance. Short, punchy and enjoyable. Yes, a few minor glitches but they don’t detract at all from this new indie’s efforts.

Companera

Oh yes, just found myself another author to follow or at least read some more books from and sign up for newsletters. If you like strong women characters, action, adventure and fantasy all wrapped up in a pretty lil package. This book is for you. Though it doesn't quite leave you hanging on a cliffhanger. I honestly want more of this series like asap.

Dakota is a PCT bounty hunter. She only specializes in hunting werewolves. And wants to keep her city safe. If that means she needs to get down and dirty so be it. She'll be the cowboy or cowgirl rather. That will get the job done. But it would seem she has an secret admirer or two in her wake. Can she do her job, plus help some new people in her life with their mission and still keep everything under wraps?

Paranormal with a fresh twist and lots of excitement

I loved this novel. The author has managed a fresh approach to the vampire and werewolf theme and has given it a beautiful setting and a Spanish flavour that has us glued to the page.

The female lead is strong, beautiful and determined even at the cost of her heart, and the male lead Diego, is fascinating and yet at the same time has a vulnerable appeal you instantly fall in love with, and you want him to get the girl.

However fierce the sensual pull, this is more than a romance. It is action packed novel, well written with a smooth pace throughout and a distinct style that had me downloading the next book the minute I finished the first.
Great reading!

Vampires, werewolves, Cazadora y una Revolución! Count me in!

Dakota del Toro is a kickass heroine with a soft spot and a broken heart. Eduardo got my attention with his bandito ways and Diego is an old world sexy mystery.

The story had me engaged since page one, it packs a punch with the right amount of spice, we got a whole lot of action and enough hints of romance. I adore the New Mexico setting, and the connection to old Spain. My family is from Granada, and my great-grandmother was said to be a gipsy, so yeah, might be biased but I LOVE IT!

The perfect start to the series, go on and get Cazadora, you won’t regret it!

First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also, this author is new to me, but it won't be my last.

Wow!!! This story was gr8. I love Dakota del Toro. She's strong and sassy. She stands by her convictions no matter how hard they might be. There's something also very special about her. Diego is a hot and sexy vampire. This story has so much going on in it that it was hard to put down. I was so wrapped up in this story that I couldn't stop reading until the end. I'm looking forward to reading more. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.

Compañera, by Julia Debarrioz, draws the reader in right away! A world in which vampires and werewolves really exist! You will feel like YOU ARE the main character, Dakota Del Toro, while reading this book. You’ll be fighting shapeshifters and falling in love right along with her! It’s a really fun read full of action, intrigue and sprinkled with a little love. We can’t WAIT for the sequel! Julia does an amazing job describing Dakota’s world. It has a totally different feel to vampires and werewolves than other books we’ve read. We highly recommend you pick this book up and give it a try! You will not be disappointed!!! Thank you so much for gifting us this book Julia!!!

I loved diego and Dakota. Dakota is such a fierce badass and I loved learning about her job and the world around it. Diego is a swauve soldier, he his fiercely protective of Dakota and the more i learned about him the more questions I had. They crime and justice aspect of the story was constant twists and turns that kept me wondering what could possibly happen next. What is between diego and Dakota? Will their plans succeed with their unlikely bunch of outcasts by their side? I will be getting the next book as soon as possible, a gripping and suspensful supernatural read.

Companera was the best werewolf/vampire story I’ve read in a long time. It has romance, betrayal, and scheming bad guys. The author did an amazing job taking the paranormal creatures and placing them in a modern world, even going as far to fit them in modern jobs. She kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more...in a good way! I didn’t want the story to end! I HAVE to find out what happens next to Dakota and wether or not she chooses the guy that I’m pretty sure is destined to be her soulmate.

As a lycanthrope bounty hunter Dakota knew how evil worked and when a desperate mother asked for her help, she was ready to get involved and in doing that she found herself in a dangerous adventure where her life was at stake. Diego's character left me intrigued. Strong, smart and with his own agenda could he charm enough Dakota? Action, suspense, strong characters, evil lycanthropes and vampires, romance and violence. First book that I read by this author and it will not be the last. Well written, interesting plot development and left me eager for more.
