Life started out rocky for Devin Rice, but it’s turned out pretty well. He has adoptive parents and a brother who love him, and he works as a coder for his dad’s video game company. Romance is scarce, but a chance encounter leads to more than he ever expected.
While dropping off an assignment for his sick brother, Dev meets his mentor. Art history professor Seth Kent is brilliant and gorgeous, just what Dev has been looking for. Except that he’s in a long-term committed relationship.
Seth’s partner, Leaf, is older and sees the world differently due to his unusual upbringing. To him, the clear attraction between Seth and Dev isn’t a problem, it’s an unexpected gift. After all, Leaf is often on the road, going wherever rescue dogs need rehabilitation.
When Leaf meets Dev, all the missing pieces fall into place, and three men from different worlds and at different points in life fill each other’s empty spaces. For them, building a future together is the most natural thing in the world. But their unconventional love causes waves in their careers and family dynamics, and each man has his own doubts and fears to overcome.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t exactly have me holding my breath…
Devin Rice may not have gotten off to a great start in this world but sometimes Karma can be kind and for him it was. He’s got a set of awesome adoptive parents and a brother who he loves and who loves him…enough that they live as roommates. He works for his dad’s video company as a coder and all in all things are pretty good. But Devin also has some issues he’s got a bit of social anxiety going on and his romance life is pretty much non-existent, at the moment, but that’s all about to change when Devin agrees to deliver an assignment for his brother to his mentor and professor…Seth Kent.
Seth is older but he’s also brilliant and gorgeous and pushes more buttons than even Seth knew he had and he’s also in a relationship with…an older man…enter Leaf, yep, that’s his name ‘Leaf’ like the things you find on trees. So awkward moment, right? Nope, because Leaf’s all good with Seth’s attraction and when he meets Dev…well he not only understands the attraction, he quickly comes to realize that he shares his partner’s attraction to Devin. Thanks to his work with rescue dogs Leaf’s frequently gone from their home and while Dev had the good fortune to be adopted by a loving couple who gave him a wonderful childhood and home…Leaf, not so much and while he survived his childhood and all things considered turned out to be pretty awesome, it left him with a bit of a different outlook no life where some things are concerned.
I have to admit I was more than a little intrigued by the blurb and willing to venture into the story and things started out not to badly. I liked the first part of the book things between Dev and Seth started out fairly well and held a lot of promise and then we met Leaf…and that’s where the story fell apart for me. Don’t get me wrong I liked the characters all 7 of them…wait, what? 7 you say? Where did we get the number 7 from? Oh that’s easy…sit back and I’ll explain…
Ok, so you know who 3 of the characters are right? Devin, Seth and Leaf but somewhere early on…as in right around the time we meet Leaf we also meet…Husky, Grace and Missy and later on we meet Weasley (and any good Harry Potter fan will get this name and why he has it) and that makes lucky number 7…do you see where I’m going here? Because if you don’t than let me spell this out for you…I love dogs, hell I have one. He’s my fur-baby and I love cats I don’t have any right now but that’s not a reflection of how I feel…trust me on that one. Anyways back to the story and how things went sideways for me. Shortly after Leaf came into the picture I announced to my hubby… “It’s a little weird that I’m starting to feel like I know more about the animals in this story than a dog that I’ve lived with for 6 years.” so yeah, that was my first clue that we were heading sideways and unfortunately it became an ongoing problem for the remainder of the story. Pretty much without fail whatever was happening events consistently drifted back around to the dogs and one unfortunate little ginger kitten.
Ultimately there was a lot about this story that I like or could have potentially liked if I could have had more people time and less rescue dog story. It’s not that I didn’t like the dogs not even close I just needed them not to be in the foreground of the story so much and more a part of the background that helped to flesh out the main story which should have been about the relationship development between Dev and Seth and Dev and Leaf and ultimately between Dev, Seth and Leaf and for me when something else in a story keeps pulling my focus away from what’s suppose to be the core of the story than well…it’s a distraction and not an enhancement of what I thought I was going to be reading about and honestly, it eventually becomes a bit annoying.
At the end of it all what should have been a story about two men in a relationship (Seth & Leaf) meeting and taking a third man (Dev) into their lives and their hearts got overshadowed by 3 dogs and a cat and at times started to feel like a PSA for rescue dogs. So, if you like dogs…I mean really, really, really like dogs you’ll probably like that, but for me, while I do like dogs, it just became distracting and a little bit annoying.

An ARC of “Like Breathing” was graciously provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I wish I had the time to be more eloquent with this review, but I don’t. I just couldn’t get on board with this, no matter how much I loved the beginning between Seth and Devin. There was so many dogs it felt like a puppy training manual. The “imperfect” characters were too “perfect”. Then Leaf just bombards Seth with the idea of them both dating Devin without any conversation or questions...not to mention the fact that he literally met Devin a few minutes before he brings it up. It was awkward and unsexy and not appealing. There’s also no tension anywhere. It’s just all good. They are all perfect for each other. Even after 1 date. I didn’t believe it. Not at all. And where was the kink? Seth needed it rough in bed and Leaf couldn’t do that so...enter Dev. And it was all a fizzle. It was not what I expected from the first couple of chapters. YMMV.
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This poly romance is both sweet and sexy. It is the story of a young programmer who falls hard for his brother’s professor - and then equally as hard for the professor’s older husband.
I really loved all three men in this book. Devin and Seth are easy to love. Both cerebral and somewhat introverted, the chemistry between them is instant and the relationship that builds makes sense.
Leaf caught me by surprise and initially the relationship between him and Devin felt awkward and forced. In their first conversation, Leaf comes across as a creepy old man and I didn’t understand why Devin agreed so readily to explore a relationship with him. But Leaf won me over almost as fast as he won over Devin. I loved the overlapping interests of all three men and I enjoyed the way Devin makes Leaf and Seth stronger together. I love a good dog in a romance and this one has three brilliant dogs - and a stray kitten.
While this is definitely a poly romance rather than erotica menage, there are some wonderfully electric sexual scenes that are all the more beautiful because of the emotional connections between the men.
As soon as I read the blurb on this one, I snatched it up. I couldn’t wait to see what Fielding did with these three guys and how it all came together. When there are so many personalities, sometimes its hard to make things work. Or things end up too good to be true. But Fielding does a fantastic job with this book and I really enjoyed it.
Each of the MCs is distinct and consistent. I loved them all for different reasons. And on their own, each one endeared himself to me. But what truly impressed me with this story is how effortlessly they blended together and how believable it all was. It stems from having MCs that were real and relatable. Each MC had his flaws and issues, but also huge hearts and wonderful traits. Dev is a complete sweetheart, and though he has anxiety that stifles him sometimes, he’s a genuinely open and caring man. Seth works far too hard, and has his own issues, but he loves Leaf with everything, and opens his heart easily to Dev. And Leaf kind of holds them all together, with his open-mindedness and huge heart. I liked the way they all balanced each other and supported each other. Truly, these guys fit so incredibly well.
While the title implies that the three men in this complicated romance feel a “love as easy as breathing”, this is true only up to a point. Yes, falling in love is easy for them because the attraction is there from the start, but trying to figure out how they all fit together is much more difficult. Not that this is a surprise: Seth and Leaf have been together for ten years when they meet Devin (Dev), the age differences between them are significant, and meshing personal and professional lives between three men is, by definition, more problematic than finding a balance for two. Then there are the problems with acceptance of their unconventional relationship from others, both family and friends, and you have quite the situation.
I love a good menage story, and this one was really enjoyable. I also love unique characters, and these guys were definitely that. Seth is the mentor of Devin’s stepbrother. He’s with his long-time partner, Leaf, who is older but has quite a sad background. He was raised in a cult by hippie parents, but he and his sister managed to get out on their own. Needless to say, he has quite a different outlook on relationships. He also travels a lot with his job of dog training and helping shelters with his skills.
When Seth meets and crushes on Devin, and vice versa, Leaf believes Devin was meant for them. He sees right away that Seth and Devin could be great together, and he is interested as well, so it was an easy decision to convince Seth and Devin they should all date. It was really sweet how it all played out, as they take their time getting to know each other. They didn’t just jump right into sex, though the chemistry was there off the bat. Not only did they just fit together, but Devin was great for both Seth and Devin, and, in turn, made their relationship stronger in the process.
Even though Seth and Devin had an established relationship, I never really got the feeling of Devin being a third wheel. He was truly important to both guys, and Devin clearly fell for both of them as well. Each of them had some issues, i.e. anxiety, etc., and it was great to see each guy affected the others in that respect. They had a few hurdles to overcome for their relationship to all work out, but I really enjoyed watching it happen. Extra points for the animal stars of this book, who also played important roles in the lives of these dog lovers. 🙂

This is a very enjoyable, romantic and thoughtful story. It involves three people with very different lives, and yet somehow, they all find their role in completing each other. There is always a bit of a pause when a newbie joins an established couple, but here the acceptance from the start makes that easier to envisage. Acceptance from others is less immediate, but they are confident in what is right for them.
Possibly in part due to the dogs, and the kitten, this has far more of a romantic, family feel than many trio stories may have, but never fear, you will get to read about the intensity of the chemistry between them as well. As the title says, their relationship is like breathing, natural, meant and life affirming. Delicious, thank you!

My review isn't going to do this book justice because I'm not great at expressing how I feel in words but holy flipping hell this book was good. M/M/M books are one of those books that can go really good or really bad. This one was really good. Just like the title the lives of Dev, Seth and Leaf are so smooth and natural just like breathing. There is no jealousy, no awkwardness and no unease at all. All three just fit so well together. Each man brings something differnt to the table and Dev conpletes Seth and Leaf like no other. Add in some amazing dogs and a little kitty and this book will melt your heart. I found myself putting the book down several times becauae I didn't want it to end. Amazing men and a beautiful love story.
I thought this was very very okay. The dialogue was cringe-worthy at times, the heated scenes very non-descriptive, and the pacing too fast then too slow.
DNF at 30%. The plot was not horrible, but quite dull and monotone. The MCs were pretty bland and their behavior highly implausible. In particular, the initiation of the threesome relationship was so contrived that it's impossible to believe it could happen. Examples?
2 stars I wish I could say I loved this story, but honestly it didn't work for me. I liked the three MCs: no one of them was perfect, but at least one of them had what the others needed. Leaf's past was very difficult to read and luckily there weren't too many details. It still hurt though.
They jumped into a relationship too easily: Leaf didn't really know Dev, he just knew what Seth told him, and yet, after meeting him for 5 minutes, he was ready to go into a triad. They also say I love you to each other very soon.
About the sex scenes, I think they're not balanced: Leaf and Seth have a strong connection and they start bonding with Dev pretty soon. Dev is a little hesitant and doesn't want to have full sex all together too soon, he needs time to adjust. And it was fine. Even if he was quite straightforward when he was just with one of them.
At some point, we read that they had penetrative sex together twice already, without any details. I don't think explicit sex scenes are mandatory, but when the story involves a triad I think the physical part it's very important to understand their dynamic. It all felt anticlimatic: the bj scenes at the picnic and the scenes the night Dev met Rain were way too long that the only one when they have full sex.
The book isn't long, but it was a very slow reading, I don't know exactly what was wrong, it was like the situations were dragged for pages: the dogs and the cat took way too much space between their training, feeding, behaviours, medical attention. And honestly despite Seth being very anal about cleanliness, sometimes they went from being kissed and slobbered by the dogs to being in bed and kissing each others.
Angel's situation and his explanation were surreal: is he bi or pan? Is he attracted to men or it was just that one time? His behaviour was awkward and uncomfortable, while the parents were surprisingly too accepting.
Like Breathing is the first book that I’ve read by Tia Fielding but it isn’t going to be the last. I liked her style of writing and attention to details, but I also liked that I felt like I was in the book and living each of her characters’ lives with them, sharing their happiness, joy, hurts, sorrow, loneliness and at times jealousy. Oh and can’t forget about all of the hot kinky scenes. Yep definitely going to be reading more books by this author if they are like this book. I love a book with a good Daddy kink to it but with three main characters that have different needs that isn’t the only kink that’s in this book. There’s also a nice gap in age between the main characters. I loved how they all fit together and filled the holes in that needed to be filled.
They really complimented each other. But adding another person to an already established and committed relationship isn’t without its problems and misunderstandings. Communication’s key in every relationship and even more so when there are more than two people.
I loved Devin Rice. He’s twenty-five, has anxiety issues, and writes code for his father’s gaming company. I loved how he interacts with Seth and Leaf. I also like the relationship that he has with his adoptive parents and his brother, Angel even if Angel has issues with Devin dating his mentor, Seth. Although I get it, Angel’s afraid that Devin will break-up Seth and his partner, Leaf and that it will affect the professional relationship between him and his mentor. But there were times that I wanted to smack him and tell him to get over his homophobic issues, although that one scene where the brother walks in on them all is priceless. And that’s just one scene out of many that you won’t want to miss.
I liked Seth. He’s an Art history professor that’s thirty-six. He’s a little bit of a perfectionist, and he’s in a long-term committed relationship with Leaf and has been for about ten years. He loves his partner, but Leaf is gone a lot of the time training problem dogs.
When he mentions to Leaf that it’s been over a year since they’ve had penetrative sex, he knows that something has to change. He doesn’t want to have to give his partner ultimatums, but he doesn’t want to be taken for granted also. When he meets Devin dropping off his sick brother’s paper and then later ends up having lunch with him, he’s surprised at how easy he is to talk to and how much fun it is to have somebody to talk to. They’re just friends but he can’t help that he thinks he’s attractive and they have chemistry.
I liked that Leaf is different than both Seth and Devin in how he was raised. He had an unusual upbringing, and it’s left him with a different view of relationships and monogamy. So when his partner, Seth, gushes about his protégé’s brother and how they had lunch and talked for a while, he can see how animated his partner is, and although Seth doesn’t seem to be aware of it, he can see how attracted Seth is to Devin and he’s happy about it. He thinks that Devin could be just what their relationship needs. Somebody to be with Seth when Leaf has to be gone, and it doesn’t hurt that after meeting Devin that Leaf likes him just as much as Seth. And the attraction seems to be mutual between all three of them. I also liked that Leaf is fifty and has salt-n-pepper hair and is attractive enough to make Devin drool.
All in all the book is fabulous and one that I will be rereading.
***The ARC was provided by Dreamspinner Press. My review is an honest opinion of the book ***
This was a great read. It is a book about three different men, three different age groups, and three different types of age groups. But even though these three are different in more ways then one, they completed a part of each other that they did not realize they needed completing.
Devin is a twenty five year old who works from home. He works for a gaming company that his father owns by writing code, figuring out glitches, and creating and testing new games. He loves his life with his brother Angel. Angel is a college student and when he gets sick and has to turn in a paper, Dev gets nominated to take the paper to Angel’s professor.
When Dev meets Angels professor, Seth, sparks fly between these two. Though Seth does not realize that he is so taken with Dev at first, anyone who knows Seth knows that Seth is interested in Dev from the start. But it takes Leaf to help Seth realize what is obvious.
Leaf is Seth’s long term life partner. And when Seth starts talking about the guy that he met by chance, Leaf knows that Seth is interested. Normally in these types of situations the partner would not be as happy about this as Leaf is. But then again Seth is not like most people.
When Dev is invited over to Seth’s house on what he believes is a date, Seth is thrown for a loop to find out Seth has a partner. Then he is even more thrown when he realizes that Leaf not only knew about the attraction between Seth and Dev but that he is also intesredted in Dev as well.
So this is how these three men decide to date one another. But there is several obstacles that these men will have to face if they want to try and make a real go at the three of them having a relationship between hem. It will not be easy. And there will be hard times but if these three have any chance at all they are going to have to face things head on.
This was a great read. I enjoyed the good and the bad times he’d three has to go through in order to find heir happy. I was entrenched in this read the whole way through the book. Tia did an incredible job on this. Definitely a book worth reading.
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
I wish Goodreads let you do half stars because I would give this 3 1/2 stars.
Now, disclaimer. I am not a huge fan of menage/poly-amorous relationships. I do not judge anyone in the life who pursues a relationship like that. I respect any and everyone's right to have loving and consensual relationships, they need not fit my perspective of monogamy. I had the honor of reading this book and really do appreciate that opportunity. Even though I had a feeling that menage relationships would prove tricky for me to get into. I am more so annoyed about my personal hang ups when reading stories like these.
Now, I love Tia Fielding's writing. I love the way she can make you feel for the characters and learn from and about their struggles. However, I find it hard to like Leaf. For a majority of the novel, I felt that Leaf need not be in the picture. I did not feel anything towards him in regards to Seth and Devin. I did not understand his place in their dynamic. At times, I learned more about the dogs and their background than I did Leaf. Also, I found Devin to be slightly annoying because of how he came across in some scenes.
Usually, menage stories (that I have read in the past) are used for kink factor. Not so much for the relationship dynamic. So, I guess that is where my personal hang ups come from. I also do not always see how the three fit in the relationship. I usually end up only liking 1 or 2 of the three.
I did not connect with Leaf. I did not feel the connection between him, Seth, and Devin. I liked Seth. I did. Yet, I struggled to understand him and Leaf together. I think I might need to re read this one day and pin point why that connection escaped me.
And honestly, I am not entirely sure that Seth and Devin would make a good couple. It’s weird that I also did not think that Leaf and Seth made a good couple. Kind of confused as to why they were together in the first place, but then Devin came into the picture and I wanted it to make sense. I truly did. Yet, it (their togetherness) felt stilted at times.
Like Breathing is a fantastic male ménage romance. As this is one of my favorite genres, I had to dive into this one by Tia Fielding right away.
Fielding explores three men with diverse life experiences, who come from vastly different backgrounds and ages. Leaf, the oldest at almost 51, is a dog trainer who travels often, leaving Seth alone for long periods of time. Seth, age 36, is a brilliant, perfectionistic professor who overthinks everything. They are perfectly happy and content, albeit lonely when apart.
Then Seth meets Devin. The youngest at 25, Devin navigates anxiety and OCD issues while beta testing video games for his father’s company.
Devin is interested in Seth from their first meeting. As Seth seems to be reciprocating these feelings, Devin is shocked to discover Seth has a longtime partner, Leaf, who he calls his husband. Even more surprising is the fact that Leaf actually encourages Devin and Seth to date. Soon, however, both men are dating Devin. Of course, they can’t possibly anticipate the bond that will develop among them.
What follows are sensationally steamy moments, but it is their relationship that I truly admire. These three men blend together in an especially tender manner. Realizing that each actually needs the other two to fully complete himself, both in life, as well as in the bedroom. They each bring something special to the relationship, which is what really makes for a great ménage story. It is beautiful and admirable that they can accept how a trio works, avoiding any jealousy.
The author tackles several tough subjects, including the effects of growing up in a cult, sexual abuse, and family tension, as well as the inherent complications of polyamorous relationships.
I highly recommend Like Breathing. It is a beautiful love story, which has a lot of depth, infused with hope and acceptance. I find Tia Fielding a wonderful writer with a superbly engaging style. This book is one I will be re-reading often!
This is somewhere between 3 and 4 for me. It was an enjoyable read for the most part. I liked the characters and while the relationship gets off the ground very fast, it is related in a detailed, domestic way without much drama that I enjoyed. It was nice that the sexual stuff did not all just happened at once. There are some issues though.
For example when Dev meets Leaf for the first time, had no idea Seth even had a partner and pretty much after just knowing the guy 30 minutes or so agrees to a threesome dating arrangement. Without either of them talking to Seth before either. Or introducing breath play the first time they are playing a bit rough, when Dev even admits he's no Dom and just winging it. That's pretty hardcore for just experimenting, I thought. Also, the kiddos. There are three dogs and a cat. While I did not mind the pets for the most part they did take up quite a bit of space in the book. Also, the baby-speak around them was rather silly, but maybe that's just me. I didn't even talk to my actual baby that way. I also felt their "couple kinks" that each pair apparently shared where a bit shoe-horned in. Especially the daddy kink felt forced and like an afterthought. While I appreciate the idea that each couple has something that's their own, it really needs to be integrated better to work.
Devin and Angel are adopted brothers but closer than most blood brothers. Devin takes some papers for Angel to his professor and Seth flirts with him. They go to lunch and Devin likes him but knows it will cause issues with Devin. Then comes a shock to Devin...Seth has a lover. One he has been in a monogamous relationship for ten years. Leaf is an unusual man. He was raised in a cult and has different beliefs. He knows that there are things each man needs the other doesn't supply and perhaps Devin could fill those needs and complete them. I loved all of these characters. I adored Leaf and how open he was. I loved that he trained dogs and helped in shelters. I would have liked a little more about his job though. Exactly what he does and how his dogs helped. Seth was sweet and I love me some hot professor stories. I liked how Devin fits in so perfectly completing the relationship between Seth and Leaf. Usually, in a menage, I want a touch of conflict because it feels more natural, but in this story, it just fits perfectly how smooth they fit. If you like game coders, hot professors, dog trainers, cute dogs, funny kittens, sweet sensual sex and an all over sexy menage romance this is for you.
A cute romance where Dev meets his brother's professor and ends up in a romance with him and his husband. I enjoyed how they started off their relationship, with the conversations they had and how the people around them reacted, as well as how the three of them dealt with their issues in the past.
That said, I would have loved more relationship conflict in this book. There was some conflict in here but it mostly came from . There was some mentioned in the epilogue (about finances) but we skipped over that in the main part of the book and it was just skimmed over in the epilogue. It would have been great if we had something like that in the main plot of the book so we could see how the three of them dealt with it.
But I enjoyed this well enough and I would recommend it.
Conflicted! That’s how I feel about this book. On the one hand I loved the premise, I’m a big fan of poly romance and of kink, so when I saw this on Joyfully Jay I went for it immediately. I liked the writing style and the way the animal relationships were included. Unfortunately, overall I found it a bit disappointing. So, so, SO many extraneous tropes & plot lines thrown in for no real contribution to the story line. I kept thinking “ok, where are we going with this” and... nothing. If she’d Skipped some of them and explored more deeply the kink relationships she kept referring to but glossed over, I’d have been much more into it.
I’ve read this author before. This is a MMM story set in the USA. The main characters are Dev, Seth and Leaf. They are all varying ages and have varying background. Life is about 50 and a dog trainer. Seth is a university professor with Dev, the gaming programmer, being the youngest and the brother of student of Seth’s. Leaf and Seth have been in a relationship for the last 10 years, and didn’t know they needed a 3rd to complete them. By accident Dev, meets Seth and they go on a date. This story has dogs and cats as well. I’ll read more from this author.
I love a well done m/m/m and this one hit all my buttons. I loved the age differences that made no difference at all. I loved how different they are, how accepting of each other they are, and how they complete each other. And really, who doesn't love cute, sensitive, therapy dogs. I highly recommend this story.
Great book, plenty of storyline and a little heat too. Dev, Seth and Leaf were lovely characters, as were the supporting characters and let’s not forget the furry characters, who were amazing! There’s no hard hitting angst, but I knew that going in and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very entertaining, sexy and different menage than most menage's. Everyone was more accepting than I think would actually happen but could hope for! Lovely MC's - a wonderfully enjoyable, feel good read.
I enjoyed this even if I did think it odd that EVERY single person they came out to as a three-some was completely open and accepting with no one expressing concern or thinking it odd.
