On a quest to rescue their father in a fantasy realm, sisters Abbie and Mae are butting heads. Mae is the story of a young woman who finds her sister who has been missing for the last seven years. Turns out she was off adventuring in an Oz type land. When her sister is kidnapped they both head back to find him. I love Ha's character designs. They look like they could be real creatures. His storytelling is often disjointed though. I always feel like I missed a page or a panel. Still, I'd read the phone book if Gene Ha drew it. If his writing ever gets to the level of his art, he'll be unstoppable.
MAE is a whirlwind of imaginative daring and sterling character work, and boasts a color palette that seems culled from the vastness of dreams. It's really cute, too. A YA comic series that almost demands to be placed on your shelf, to be rediscovered again and again and again. Timeless.
I liked this volume more than the first. I found the dialogue to be less corny and more realistic. While the first volume was more of an introduction into this world and felt, at times, info-dumpy, this one was more action and the reader and MC's discovering the world together. When I started this I thought it was the end of the story but it's not. Gene Ha is working on volume 3 but there is no release date yet. I'll definitely be continuing on as the end of volume 2 ended on quite the cliffhanger.. literally.
Mae is really coming into her own, after small fued with her sister now she has to navigate this parallel world on her own. I found it to be very suspenseful and the story's pace quickened as Mae becomes a lead inventor in a world stuck mostly in the steampunk/clockpunk past tech ways. She gets a big surprise when she sees their are more advanced technology in the cyberpunk realm within the enemie's hands. Now I'm waiting to see about volume 3 as I need to know what's going on, and how their father is coming to the picture like this.
Good thing I grabbed volume two with the first volume, as this one went above expectations. Loved development of Mae in role of creative tech engineer, and am glad that Dahlia gets to join in on the fun. This one leaves us with a great cliffhanger! Looking forward to volume 3. Reader Advisory: I still rate this series as a clean read. Adventure violence (not super graphic), some violent death/destruction.
Despite the irregular publishing schedule, I’m really enjoying Mae. I actually just finished Issue 12 and decided to check out how the trades were being divided, and realized Vol. 2 was complete 2 issues ago!
I enjoyed this volume more than I did the first, actually, and I loved seeing Mae take over the ass-kicking, and enjoyed Dahlia and their friendship in effect here. It's a little batshit, but I'm about it.
