These love stories have other names. Mothering. Fathering. Befriending. Comforting. Helping. And, yes, holding on while letting go. For loving others is often as much about letting go as holding on—and never too tightly. If you are looking for a self-help book about caregiving, this isn’t it. But if you are interested in a thoughtful exploration of tending, taking care, and letting go of the need to attach other labels to stories about love, then you will enjoy this tender and uplifting collection of true stories written by a member of a big sprawling Southern family who knows how to laugh and cry—and move on. In short, you’ll be blessed to read Blessed. Get it now, and then get comfortable. It’s a good read for a tender heart. Daphne Simpkins is an Alabama writer and is best known for the church lady Mildred Budge series. Thank you Daphne. You are a special person who has been given the gift of gab 😂 and can put it on paper. I saw me in “Confessions of a Care Giver”. I’m a doter. I underlined many words in “The Activity Director”.....”Jesus, I trust you with my life.” He’s given me strength during these last 16 months after Sami passed away. Thank you for paying homage to Daddy, and helping me recall many sweet moments with Aunt Lola and Uncle Jerry. I had totally forgotten about that pink sink. This is such a nice book that will help others who have loved and lost and tended to. Xo.
What a wonderful time spent with someone who understands caregiving! Ms. Simpkins speaks to so many emotions and to times when emotions become numb. She knows the joys that can be found in the midst of intense sacrifice. She helped me see again the blessedness of being a caregiver. This is a gentle stroll through a hard place. I am so glad I stumbled upon this book. It is a gift to those who are touched by dementia.
As my life role has changed from full-time employee and part-time caregiver, to full-time caregiver and part-time employee, this book offered a variety of views of caregiving and what that means. Thanks for sharing encouraging thoughts in this book, and the varying roles of caring for others.
