The setting in this was like a side character, really richly described, and I really liked reading about the Yukon gold rush and the characters travelling from Vancouver to Dawson City in 1898. I wanted to like this more though, I mean it’s a woman doctor on the frontier (my crack) and a Mountie (my other crack) but it just didn’t hit for me. I dunno if this three star is the product of my reading slump and nothing really keeping my attention or if the book itself just needed more depth overall. The story was really too short and not enough development was done for anything; the suspense, the characters or the romance. It was extremely surface level and didn’t go deep enough for what I was looking for, but it was a comfortable read nonetheless. I might try the next book in the series and see if it’s better, but I will need to find it free on a subscription service or the library, so far it seems unavailable so I guess this is it for me.
It’s 1898 in the city of Klondike of Yukon and the middle of gold rush frenzy. With it comes overpopulation, strained resources and crime.
Sergeant Colt Hunter of the North-West Mounted Police and bodyguard for the Finance Minister of Canada is going under cover with five other Mounties to capture a notorious thief who was terrorizing travelers making the trek from Alaska to Klondike. Starting off their journey from Vancouver, they were caught off guard when Elizabeth Langley announces that she’ll be joining them on the trip. She’s a medical doctor struggling to be accepted as such and wanting to treat men as well as women. She believes she stands a better chance of being able to practice in Klondike and has another, secret reason for getting to the city. Colt and his team are displeased and concerned about her being with them on a dangerous mission but agree that she can pose as their sister.
I was unfamiliar with this period in history and found the descriptions of the gold rush environment highly interesting. The perils of the travel were enlightening, some never occurring to me. Colt and Elizabeth have somewhat of a history, one where she’d created a divide by meddling in his last relationship. They bickered a lot in the first half of the story and it became tiresome after awhile, especially as it seemed to be the same argument. When it shifted to one of romance, it became steamy pretty fast and didn’t feel as authentic as the other historical elements of that era. It was hard to accept they’d take the risks for their interludes.
It was an interesting story and the last third of the book was exciting as it focused more on the mission of the Mounties. However, the romance moved too quickly for my taste...not their feelings but the steamy encounters. They got in the way of the believability of the story and undermined an otherwise historically accurate book. The mystery and suspense elements are the most intriguing.
The writing was done well enough, but for me, it was too much about the scenery, how they manoeuvred thru the mountains, etc. It read more as a Western for me, than a romance.
Maybe I gave up too soon before the romance kicked in, but from what I read... the heroine was a very strong-willed female doctor, the hero and everyone around her kept telling her that she is female and can not do this or that, etc. I did not buy the sparks/chemistry that the author was telling me that was taking place.
I might need to try this another time, but for right now it didn't work for me.

The exposition is too long. So far it’s just description of the setting and the group of men complaining that there’s a woman joining their trip, and the two leads have barely interacted.
I’ve read Kate Bridges before and enjoyed her so I figured it would be the same this time. But alas it was not to be. I struggled mightily with this book and got about 3/4 done before finally giving up.
One of the issues I had it was the book read like more of a love story to the geography of the area rather than between two people. The author waxes poetic about the scenery and travelling by boat and how to get horses from place A to place B rather than building on the connection between the hero/heroine. She’s done her research, the reader can tell and while I really appreciate an author who loves her subject, I really do, I have never been there and couldn’t picture it in my mind.
And since I didn’t feel the connection I need to, for me, this turned out to be a DNF.
Now I’ve really found it. Cowboys and Canadian Mounties all in one story. Good adventure with lots of action and the thrill of Alaska in the gold rush days.
Colt is my first book by Kate Bridges, what a great surprise. Ms. Bridges has given readers a well-written book loaded with amazing characters. Colt is a Sergeant with the Mounted Police, assigned to protect the Finance Minister of Canada. When he is sent to capture the gang preying on miners, the Finance Minister asks that he escort his daughter on her trip until he leaves the train on his mission. Elizabeth has no plans of staying on the train. Elizabeth and Colt's story is loaded with drama, humor, action, sizzle and suspense. This book hooked me at the first page and held me hostage till the end. I enjoyed reading Colt and look forward to reading more from Kate Bridges in the future. Colt is book 1 of the Alaska Cowboy and Mounties Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Good story line and characters you will love. It weaves in the history of the gold rush in Dawson and my grandfather and great-grandfather were two in that stampede in 1897-99 so I have a special interest there. I just looked up the history, the route taken, hardships etc...and Kate did her homework as well and plus a few things I did not know. But the story is of several Mounties and a lady Dr. One of the Mounties was her father's personal guard for years and so they knew each other before the trek up the Chilkoot Pass to go to Dawson. There is a great story line that is intense in several ways and riveting when it comes to her Mounties. I know you will enjoy it. A wonderful bond is formed with the lady Dr and the Mounties all around her. But how does this all end? Read it and find out for yourself.
This was a very good book written by Kate Bridges and I enjoyed reading it. Five mounties, a young woman doctor, no respect, a trip into Alaska , engagement?, buying a lot of supplies, a boat trip upriver, trying to help, can't be a doctor, meeting people, trecking into the wilderness, again going up river, bathtub and Champagne, falling in love, getting robbed and a whole lot more. Will they catch the robbers and have a happy ever after? I would recommend this book to everyone. Buy this book and see what happens. Enjoy reading.
I won a copy to read and review. This was a very well written historical romance. Set in the Yukon gold rush days, the locations in Alaska and Canada were beautifully described. The characters are likeable and easy to relate with, and their relationships were well developed. Lots of action and adventure keeps the storyline moving at a fast clip. Reading this book was like taking a adventure vacation in my mind!
Colt Hunter is a Canadian Mounted Police on a mission looking for thieves along the route to Dawson City in the Klondike. He is also taking Elizabeth to Dawson City to meet her grandfather and fiance. The dangers along the route are constant. They can never let their guard down. Colt and other Mounties disguised as his brothers and Elizabeth as their sister pretend to be peddlers of apricots and sausages to sell in Dawson City. Fun and exciting read.
This is the 1st book I have read by Kate Bridges and it will not be the last. The main characters, Elizabeth and Colt, are so realistically depicted I felt they might have been real people I know. The story is complex enough to hold my interest and the love story progresses very nicely. I am excited to read the next story in this series. I appreciate Ms. Bridge's voice and her fresh writing style. Enjoy!!
I think they have been in love with each other for years. Colt often acted as her body guard thought that she was a class above him. It could never be. Elizabeth studied to be a Doctor during a time when women were not allowed in medical schools. It took an undercover trip to the Klondike to finally get them together. An easy story to settle into and a hard story to leave until it was finished.
Very interesting account of traveling to the Klondike in the gold rush days. The details of the trip made it seem like you were right there. The characters, I imagine, were indicative of the type of people who made the journey for real. A tad of romance thrown in made the story more poignant.
I really enjoyed this book. A good mix of historical fiction and romance with plenty of action and mystery. There is a good amount of slow burn for the H and h and includes danger for all. I enjoyed a strong female character that was really out of her time and that there was a man to appreciate her for it.
I enjoyed this book but it did start off slow. I am glad that I continued reading. I enjoyed the adventure and the mystery throughout the story. The biggest disappointment for me is using the Lord's name in vain. I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I am not obligated to give a review and am doing this willingly.
Thank you for this exciting story about Colt and Elizabeth and their journey to Dawson City in the Yukon and the undercover plan to capture a gang who stole the gold miners claims and the gold they mined. The storyline was fast-moving and the many characters were interesting.
Colt is a Mountie in canada. Elizabeth is a doctor, unheard of in this time. They r traveling to dawson city for the gold rush, him to catch a band of thieves targeting the travelers and her to practice medicine in the uninhabited land. Interesting story. Enjoyed her doctoring along the way. Enjoyed their romance. Colt is an intriguing man with good policing skills.
A wonderful throughly engaging story with likable characters. The story line was intriguing. I liked the “ trip “through Alaska and the Yukon. There was always a surprise around each corner. I’m glad I went on the trip with these characters, I so enjoyed it.
An interesting historical romance set in Alaska and Canada. It shows the hardships, determination and dangers (both natural and human) that were faced. Medical problems, action and illegal activity add more to the story. I'm ready for the next one in the series.
An interesting tale based in the gold rush era. I love that the female characters were not characterized week, but as strong vibrant women. I recommend this story to others.
6 men that were in disguise as brothers and her as their sister. They were Mounties trying to catch a gang of robbers. They were also to escort her to her grandfather.
Headstrong rich girl and the mountie! Great story, great descriptions and plenty of action. She is a doctor long before women were accepted as professionals. He is on a mission to catch the band of thieves. Of course Sparks fly. A good book!
3.5 stars I enjoyed it, the world building was very well done, the story was catching and I ended up rooting for the two main characters and their romance. I am curious to read more books by this author.
I enjoyed this book. It was refreshing to see Colt and Elizabeth go from being annoyed with each other to loving each other instead of the characters falling in love right away.
I loved the adventure this story brought to mind. The descriptions were wonderful. I could see and hear the places on the trail. I could feel the tension. It was a great read. It does contain fairly vivid romance descriptions.
Even with interruptions this book has a lot going on and you can still follow the story. Descent character build-up. Ðidnt drag with long descriptions of the hazards from gold fever. A likable entertainment.
I really thought this was interesting. I haven't read too many historical books about the gold rush up in the Yukon Territory. Some interesting reading that had me looking up maps and information.
