“You’ll die if you stop ingesting bodily fluids from the opposite sex.”

Nichika’s fate has been foretold by a man claiming to be a witch, and it spells doom. What a thing to be told right after tumbling into another dimension!

Bodily fluids—in other words, tears, spit, blood, and even—yup, kissing.

With the threat of death snapping at her heels every day, Nichika finds a way to beat the arrogant, selfish, and eccentric Witch Oswald at a bet and gets him to take her as his apprentice as a last ditch measure to stay alive. Now bound to him by magical contract, Nichika joins Oswald and his talking wolf on the run from the Witch’s Council as she tries to find her way back to Earth. Though they’re a mismatched master-apprentice duo, they have no choice but to travel across magical lands filled with fantastical creatures to escape the constant danger closing in on them.

When I was in middle school, I watched an anime where a young girl named Miaka and her friend are pulled into an old Chinese story book at the library. It wasn't like anything I'd seen up until then, featuring a story based off of Chinese mythology and epic battles and the main characters actually died. There was a lot of death and attempted assault and overall it just wasn't the kind of time or the place you'd want to ever be trapped in. Still, I watched every single episode. I couldn't wait to see how Miaka would gather the Celestial warriors of the god Suzaku, and if she did, would she use her three wish to return home or would she use them for something else? FY was so successful that it inspired many other anime and manga and light novels of the isekai genre. However, while the shojo isekai fantasy genre seems to have died away in favor of high school romances, a new genre of isekai is blooming for the shounen audience: primarily video game worlds. But for readers who want a more shojo orientated story, it's hard to find more of them when you've already watched all of the old anime series that started the isekai trend to begin with. Thankfully Cross Infinte World is localizing web-novels for a shojo oriented audience looking for more of the magic that has faded away.

Eccentric Master is essentially a mashup of FY with witches and wizards, less attempted sexual assaults (thank god) and isn't overshadowed by the main character's obsession with her FEELINGS for her love interest. That's not to say romance doesn't play a role - it's nowhere near the infamous melodrama of FY though.

Eccentric Master is written in the typical light-novel fashion so it reads like an anime and is often over the top. This is where it succeeds. The characters are quirky and intriguing - especially Charlotte and Wolfie.

Nichika gets sucked into a fantasy world one day but she can't remember much of her past life. Or she's purposefully choosing not to because she only mentions her mother and her sister; anything else she freezes up on and it's hinted that something really bad happened to her that she's hoping to forget. She's able to learn how to read and write in the new world's language so quickly she starts to wonder if there's more to this world than she thinks. Sadly, this world is severely underdeveloped. We get the barest details regarding the towns (enough to make your episodic villain anime proud) or a brief skim over the some of its history. Aka there once was a Spirit Priestess who thwarted the evil deeds of humanity...and now Nichika is the new Spirit Priestess.

Totally not Fushigi Yuugi.

Nichika must collect the powers of the great spirits into an orb in order to be granted one single wish from the person who summoned her to this world. Doing so will stop the calamity that will befall this world. Again, totally not Fushi Yuugi.

Oswald, the Witch she signs a contract with to stay alive, can be frustrating as a character but he softens up more near the end and is pretty much your standard kuudere. He's a witch (not to be confused with Wizards) and wants to amass a great fortune no matter the means. If he has to kill someone to do it he's all for it. If he can obtain a weapon of mass destruction he'll use it to study how much havoc and carnage it wreaks on the populace. So yeah, all in all your swell average joe. It's a wonder he's not all over Nichika trying to learn about the world she's from and what he could gain from it, however.

Makina's story was the most interesting and I wish there'd been more time devoted to Princess Yura, who is a princess not because of her bloodline or marriage, but because she's a military general. That's so cool!

Eccentric Master really needs more development and world-building. We need to see Nichika and Oswald come to terms with their pasts and I'd like to see more background regarding the Spirit Priestess. If this ends like FY does, oh boy Nichika better hope she never gathers all of the spirits' powers :P that's not worth the pain and suffering.

I'm excited for the next volume to come out despite this one's flaws and I can't wait to see more of the world.

I feel like this is on the verge of being good, but the author is trying to do too many things. On the plus side, vaguely smutty light novel aimed at girls.

Full review eventually appearing on ANN.

This one could be 4 stars if the FL didn't act like she doesn't have a brain. There is a tiny bit of spice, but not a lot. I bought the second vol awhile ago but I always find something more interesting to read 😬.
