Who said anything about love?

Jadin Fields is a werewolf with a big heart. She loves her work as a dog trainer at a pet store, and she loves spending time with her kid sister. She has such a big heart, in fact, that when a complete (and gorgeous) stranger approaches her out of the blue at a pizza shop and begs her to act like her girlfriend--just for a minute...Jadin actually says yes.

Tess Loranger has long, honey blonde hair, a bewitching smile and is the most attractive woman Jadin has ever set eyes on. She was also just dumped by her fiancee, and is trying, desperately, to show her that Tess can rebound just as fast as she can.

But this is just a one-time thing, right? Just a few minutes in a pizza parlor. Just one, amazing kiss, right in front of Tess's ex-fiancee...

But then there's the party. And the wedding. And then Jadin realizes she just might be falling for the woman she's not supposed to be in love with...

What could possibly go wrong?

My first book by this author and of course I pick the one book with, for me, the least appealing writing style because this book is basically written as being Jadin's diary.

Her often self deprecating thoughts and wry sense of humor were great fun to read. Unfortunately she also rambles a lot which became annoying at certain points during the narrative. Writing what happens at the beginning of a chapter and then proceeding to recap it during the remainder of that chapter is just not my reading style.

Adding to that, the story is full of angst. There are quite a few characters that were simply very unlikable. In fact a portion of this story might as well have been called "if Regina George marries Regina George" because 2 (very) mean girls getting married was a large part of the plot.

Although I didn't like this book very much I definitely liked the authors sense of humor but I'm still hesitant as to whether or not I will be reading more books by her. This ends with an overall 3* rating.

Loved it!

In the beginning I couldn't fully embrace the writing style but once I grew used to it, the story pulled me in and I was hooked. It's a story about a heartbreak, an ex cold as ice, a bunny, a wolf-only party, a wedding and pizza. There is a lot of internal conflicts, drama, a surprising twist, a beautiful love story, great storyline and complex but very interesting characters. How is it possible that a pizza could turn someone's life so upside down? Read it and you will know.

The Wolf Diaries relates its love story as journal entries and in text messages.

Jadin Fields sets aside one evening each week to spend time with her teenaged sister Jada. They share a love for take out food and pizza tops their list of favourites. Jadin drops into their local pizzeria to pick up dinner and meets Tess Loranger. Tess asks Jadin for a huge favour. Her ex-fiancee is about to enter the restaurant and find Tess eating alone. Tess hopes that Jadin will pose as her new girlfriend to make Laurie jealous. Jadin acts out of pure instinct and not so pure attraction as she quickly decides to go along with the subterfuge.

Essex explores the minefield of love lost and love found under the worst possible circumstances. Love/hate triangles are complicated enough for humans, but these love sick lesbians are werewolves. Jadin puts herself between Tess and Laurie. Laurie is already engaged to her childhood sweetheart, but still wants to be friends with Tess. Jadin wants Tess to face up to facts concerning Laurie's betrayal. As soon as she meets Tess, Jadin knows that her life has changed. She uses her journal to share the story and to contemplate its meaning. Jadin leads with her heart and couldn't be a better fake girlfriend. Writing to her future self, she wants to remember every moment as it unfolds with Tess. As the narrator, Jadin sounds ten years younger than her age of thirty four. The Wolf Diaries is a delightful and light hearted lesbian romance. I'd give it 3.75 stars and definitely recommend it.

This was a light romance between werewolves. The book was made of diary entries and I loved the heroine's voice. This was the first book I've read by this author and I'll look for more soon.

Excellent!

This is another very well written story of budding lesbian love by Bridget Essex. The characters are well developed and the storyline flows from the pages and right into your heart. Finding love after being dumped unceremoniously can leave a person devastated and unsure of themselves. Enter someone new into the equation and feelings flutter into chaos. Can old feelings be released in order to make way for new possibilities? This book belongs on your must read list.

Enjoyed the way you wrote this

I usually enjoy your writing but this time I must admit this is the first time I have read anything written in this way. Also the characters in this story seemed very real and brought back memories, both good and bad, for me.

I had not felt enticed to binge read this, but that turned out to be a good thing; the “episodic” feel stemming from the diary-like narrative actually made coming back to the book more enjoyable each time, despite it being unrealistic when one thinks about it (no one writes so much in a diary in so little time! Unless the character had been established as a writer of sorts, but that’s just me nitpicking).

There were a few typos/mistakes I didn’t find too jarring, except... agh! I wish people would stop confusing the verbs “lay” and “lie”! Occured at least twice, so it wasn’t an accident.

“I’d go out there right this minute and lay (nooo) down in it.”
“We lay (ok) like that together for a small while... I don’t know how long. It was nice to lay (NOOOO!!!) there...”

Wait, I had unconsciously been aware that it occurred twice? Not thrice? (just searched for “lay” on kindle) Oh my, internal detector! Hehehe.

Overall, an enjoyable light read.

The only reason I didn't give this one a full five star is that (although the characters were beautifully done, and the humorous wit of the main character was awesome) I still had some trouble being able to stay wanting to read the story all the time. I still love Bridget Essex's books and fun-loving characters. Usually, most of the lesbian romance stories I read turn out well, and I like those other stories where there is a hint of "Are they going to be able to get over this problem and stay together?" Of course, there are the moments where the main character's lover is trying to figure out their heart, well this is that type of story, so if you're not into that type of slow-build towards the final scene of the story, or if you don't like that heart-pounding, gut-wrenching feeling you get when the two characters you've grown to love might not work out, but somehow, someway you just know they have to fit since it's their story, well, it's that type of story again, and I love those stories, but I think you should give this a try. I didn't like it for the first 50-something pages either, but I finally got into after that.

I read/listened to this audiobook over the holidays—a sweet lesbian romance type of werewolf book, which is a description you don’t get to use that often. I enjoyed Essex’s pushing the boundaries with her narrative style in this one; as it says in the title, this is literally written as a diary, combined with interposed text messages between the characters. I was impressed by TJ Richards's effortless handling of this in the audiobook.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Tropewise this is a fake girlfriend story; I have to admit, I haven’t read enough of this kind of lesfic for the arc to feel stale to me. I liked the quirkiness of the characters, but at the end of the book I was left wondering if taking out the whole werewolf element would in any way affect the story. I’m a stickler for Chekhov's gun, though. An enjoyable read that will give you a major pizza craving and a few laughs/chuckles along the way.

Disappointed

I purchased this book because I thought it would be a cute and semi intense werewolf novel. Instead I got a human novel that vaguely talked about wolves and only a few only shift into their wolf in the last few pages. I have been on a werewolf binge for the last few weeks and was disappointed by this book.
The story itself was cute, I even managed to get past the journal entry type of writing. What I couldn't get past was believing that any of these characters were wolves. Wolves are territorial beings, they are emotional. They claim their mates and they rely on their packs. This book had none of that. There was a talk of mates vaguely, no real claiming, no shifting, no pack mentality. I could understand a lone wolf, but not dozens of lone wolves with no pack. I'd even understand that every author has their own interpretation of wolves. This barely hit the bar for me.

I read a lot of books now by Bridget Essex in quite a short time span, but this one was written in a journal form.
I liked the characters in the book, and in a way it’s just another feel good story, were girl meets girl. Where would these girls have been without “Moanie”.

I’m sad that the werewolf part is pretty much on the background and if it wouldn’t be there it wouldn’t be missed.
At the ending there is some werewolf traditions, but even that felt like if it wasn’t there it wouldnt matter.

I like the way the book is written and in a good pace. If you would have asked me at the beginning of the year if I liked romance novels I would have laughed so hard, but guess what ... I kinda like them, at least Bridgets :)

P.S its kind a weird for a werewolf to have a bunny pet ...

I have mixed feelings about this. I really liked that is an easy read, i read it fast and I actually enjoyed most of it.

What i did not like is that, if I remember correctly, our main character is 34 years old and sometimes acts like a child. And what is all about Tess continuing being friends with her ex-fiancee and even going to her wedding!!

I liked the chemistry between the main characters, and a very enjoyable fake-relationship book, my guilty pleasure.

Girlfriend dumps her and now wants her back?

Laurie dumps Tess. Tess still in love with Laurie. Tess sees Laurie come into their favorite pizza store. Tess asks Jadin to be her fake girlfriend. Things don't go the way everyone thought. Does Tess and Jadin dissolve the fake? Delightful! Enjoy.

I can taste the pizza!

Vivid writing! I can see, hear and taste the story and I don’t feel bludgeoned by description. The main characters are easy to love and just beg to be embraced. The story is sweet but not sappy. Who know werewolves could have a rabbit for a pet.

Would you help a heart broken stranger?

It's a romance book plot but fun. Would you pose as someone's fake girl friend to go to her ex fiancé's engagement party? How would you act if you were both werewolfs? What happens if you realize you'd like to be real girlfriends? Bridget Essex never fails to entertain you. Spoiler there is an HEA

Just Wow!

Once again Bridget Essex writes a wonderfully amazing book! I was captivated immediately by the style this latest one was written in! It’s like I’m reading Jadin’s diary. Loved it from the beginning and was sad when it ended. I want to know more!!

Slight twist on the I-need-someone-to-fake-date (or go to a wedding with.) This time the story is told in diary format from the standpoint of the right-place right-time invitee. Described as a werewolf story in the PR blurb but that was a very minimal component of the story arc.

Exactly what you expect from Bridget: a funny, sexy, sweet romp. The werewolf aspect is actually pretty incidental to the story, weirdly-- you could take it out without changing the story at all. Good fun.

Funny and endearing

A really enjoyable wolf themed love story with plenty of little quirks. Written as by the main character who is just very endearingly humor filled as a werewolf pinning for the girl...

Such an adorable little love story. Who knew that pretending to be someone’s girlfriend could lead you to finding love and happiness. I’m so happy Tess and Jadin figures it out and get to be deliriously happy in love.

More like whywolves. Seriously, the fact that the characters are werewolves could be removed entirely and it wouldn't change anything. Bit of an odd choice.

The storytelling and Main Character's voice are fun and different from the bog standard which made this an easy read.
