In a world of soulmates, what happens when you fall in love with someone you weren't destined for?
Newly promoted Nicholas Carson has just moved to an upscale neighborhood in a seaside town. But despite his new life, everything seems drab and dull and colorless until he meets Brylant Harrigan at a local bar one night. He's never fallen for a guy before, but something about Bry seems strangely attractive, and hauntingly familiar. Nicholas is sure he's straight, yet he can't seem to stay away from the other man, as if they're bound together somehow. There's something about Bry that makes his formerly dull days seem brighter and more colorful. For the first time in Nicholas' prosaic, ordinary life, everything seems vivid.
The only problem is that Bry's just found his soulmate... and it isn't Nicholas.
An m/m light paranormal romance, the first part of a three-part series. 37,000 words.
Meg Harris is a busy mom who spends her spare moments dreaming up worlds a little sexier than the one in which she drives kids around, runs to the grocery store, does endless loads of laundry, and scrubs the kitchen floor. Her chosen profession involves a great deal of time dedicated to imagining sweaty, gorgeous men in the throes of passion, as well as long hours spent poring over pictures of beautiful male chests in the pursuit of the perfect cover. It's a tough job, but she's willing to bear the hardships... all for her readers, of course!
When true soul mates first meet, their skin develop The Mark, visibly declaring them taken for all to see. Society expect monogamy for life for soul mates, and angry mobs who kill cheaters are a thing.
I found the idea of what happens when someone falls in love with a person not their soul mate fresh and interesting. The first half of the book was good, between 3-4 stars. There is a pivotal scene in the middle of the story, after which point I could no longer see much logic or reason in the characters' behaviour. The remaining push-pull theme of the story almost gave me whiplash, leading me to skim a lot towards the end. The second half I would give 1 star, in part caused by the writing style.
There are frequent detours into unrelated topics, and straying train of thoughts in the middle of dialogue or smex scenes which ruined the mood for me as a reader. It ultimately lead me to no longer care for the story nor for the characters. There are also repetitious elements, like how the majority of the chapters ends with something akin a punch line in the form of a 'catchy' single sentence paragraph. Not bad per se, just used so often I couldn't help rolling my eyes. Even though there are very few typos, I suspect this book hasn't been professionally edited which is a shame because it has the bones of a good story.
This is the first instalment in a trilogy so there isn't a HEA or HFN at the end, but rather a to-be-continued. I'm ok with such an ending, but my journey with Bry and Nicholas ends here. I wish them both well and hopefully there is a well deserved HEA for the two of them in their future.
This book is very unique in its story concept and at first read became one of my favorites that I've read several more times since then.
Nicholas and Brylant meet at a bar. Both are drawn to each other, but Nicholas doesn't understand why since he's not gay (or bisexual like Bry.) After watching Brylant leave with a gorgeous woman Nicholas feels a bit remorse, but figures he'll move on.
The next night they both show up at the same bar again and continue talking. Nicholas is starting to wonder if maybe he should see where things might go with Brylant... Until the woman from the night before shows up throwing herself at Bry announcing to the entire bar they were Marked as soulmates. Nicholas walks out knowing that means Brylant is now off limits and to the world it means he belongs to Marilyn.
Despite being marked Nicholas and Brylant do get together and start a relationship. It does have angst and not only from the parts about the Marking. Both men have issues from their past and Brylant can be a bit of an a$$.
I truly loved this book. It does have a happy ending, however because it was meant to be the first of a series and none others were written after it I don't know if was meant to be a HFN or HEA. That is the only part I was disappointed in... I was very excited to see where the rest of the story went.
The book is in both Nicholas and Brylant's POV. The angst level is medium/high.
Only in one other book series have I seen such a unique storyline. It's like finding an Easter egg in movies or video games.
