My new cabin-mate is a telepath and the whole ship’s scared of him. I was too, for about three seconds. He’s quiet, but once I get him talking he’s the most fascinating man I’ve ever known. He shouldn’t be in that cage. He didn’t do anything wrong. But good thing he is, because I would love to snuggle down for a long night with a body like his.
Everyone thinks they're safe. Everyone is wrong.
My race is known for being peaceful, and I was too…until I was electrocuted, kidnapped, sold, and then put in a cage. I’ll get out of here soon, but while I plot my escape, I’ll enjoy my cabin-mate’s attention. She thinks she has figured me out. She’s not even close.
The ship is being attacked, a perfect diversion. There is only one problem…I want to take my cabin-mate with me.

Note to readers: This is a full length Sci-fi Romance Novel with action, adventure, adult humor and a steamy romance. Mature readers only.

Hi,
A little more about me, I live in Southern California, with my two kids, and a trio of fur babies.
I work full time in the aerospace industry with some amazing scientist that were fundamental when brain storming new technologies for my universe.
I also have a culinary degree that is worthless because my kids love hotdogs, chicken nuggets and mac & cheese. But at least they love my birthday cakes so, I'll take that as a win.
I have a management and leadership degree that is utilized most when negotiating with my children and organizing time between writing, cleaning and family movie-night.
I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars. And when I'm being lazy, I like to read WTF Facts on Pintrest.
You can find bonus chapters and free short stories on my website.
So this book has me torn. The first few chapters were slow and hard to get past but the book soon got better and I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. Unfortunately even though there is relationship building, I can’t call it a romance novel. this book has no intimate action AT ALL. The most we get is kind of a kiss and a lead up to intimate scenes and then it’s like *snip* gone. Nothing. Just an allusion to what may have happened. BUT obviously they had sex at one point because the heroine has a miscarriage after being kidnaped and tortured. That whole subplot felt thrown in and not very well fleshed out
So all in all 3 stars as it held my interest enough to finish, but I think it was lacking not a lot of areas but especially true romance.
Edited review: This is a book I've found myself coming back to again and again since I first read it years ago. Due to this I'm raising my original four star rating to five stars. I think the world building and character development is what set this apart for me.
Original review: Overall I really enjoyed this book. I did feel like it got lost in the weeds at times following different characters, but overall a well rounded book. I'm excited to read more on the series.
When I first read the blurb for this book, I assumed the 'Unexpected Hostage' aspect of the description was Sasha, but I was wrong. The Hostage in this equation is most definitely Sci, the Cerebral who shouldn't be where he is.
Once that little hiccup was repaired in my thinking, I found myself quite enjoying this story, though there were some character choices and dynamics that I found challenging. It's a good book, one that creates the scaffolding for a series filled with other characters and romantic matches.
It didn't star higher with me simply because there was a decided 'lack' of connection on Sasha's part.... I didn't 'feel' the emotion that was supposedly there. Otherwise, this would have gained a solid 4 star review. Regardless, this was still a good read that might require a couple of trigger warnings for violence.
Pros: ~ I really like Sasha. ~ Sci is complex and woven, his way of thinking is very unique. ~ World (Universe?) building is fantastic.
Cons: ~ Fade to Black sex scenes. *sigh* ~ Needs a trigger warning for references to Torture and rape, NOT descriptive. ~ That MacGuffin.... really??
Layla Sone has earn her place on the Sci-fi romance scene. This was an excellent beginning. The depths of details for the alien worlds, space, races, technical details for the ranking, procedures, and other things was detailed and believable. This was a insightful read. The terran, Sasha and the Federation find themselves working together. This was the salvation for Sasha and an experience. She happens to be part of a crew of very unique Federation misfits. Demon, Numan, Cyborgs, Cerebrals and more. Sci was a Cerebral that found himself in forbidden terretory, Federation space. He was abducted, sold, traded, imprisoned.
I look forward to a few stories Jandy, Chollar, Pax, Ansel, maybe evne Sands.
I haven’t read many romance novels in recent years because it seems that it’s always the same story over and over. This one was much different. It kept me interested and eager to read more. The characters are well-developed and got me invested. I’m following the author and excited for the next book in the series.
This was a fun story. It definitely was plot and world building heavy. The first 15%-20% of the book is mostly world building. But the love story was sweet. I think this will be a fun series to read. I loved the side characters, all the crew seem really interesting.
I'm following this author because she writes on personal affairs that I have not contemplated much in the past. In this story, I realized that two entities can come together when there's mutual respect even though the individuals are diverse.
I appreciated the introductions of the main characters at the beginning of the book. Also, I like the idea that a romantic book does not have to produce a steamy scene on each page.
The writer is moving into territory where few men and women have gone before. I'm moving on to Layla Stone's next book in this series.
This book makes the common sci fi mistake of front loading all the world building before we really care about the characters. There is a bunch of effort spent setting up the heroines grim dark trauma planet of origin with honestly unnecessary detail and basically as soon as it gets set up she leaves it.
Speaking of Planet Trauma, I’ve read too many books where like every woman besides the heroine is experiencing profound sexual abuse and there is just no rational reason why she isn’t. Not that I particularly want more trauma, I just feel like it’s a cop out when your setting is basically rape city but the heroine is the only super special one to escape it because the author doesn’t want to deal with the emotional consequences but wants like grittiness points? Idk.
Speaking of grim dark, the actual plot, feel, themes and emotional content of the book doesn’t support the very dark content to the point that it feels both unnecessary and a bit cartoonish at times. My reaction to another over the top dark backdrop trauma should not be to roll my eyes. TW: everything.
Kidnapped from his home world Cerebral Sci finds himself on a Federation Ship. Sci wakes to find himself on a Federation Ship with no idea how he got there. The ship picks up a temporary pilot a young woman named Sasha who when told to find a bed occupies the one next to the cage Sci is kept in. Over the course of the journey Sci watches Sasha intrigued by her emotional highs and lows so different his own races temperaments. The four other members of the crew gradually relax around him eventually allowing out of his cage. Sci is a Cerebral which are forbidden in Federation Space so when the arrive he has to be taken before a court to see what is going to be done to him. Sasha is trying to get into pilot training but is refused because of her Terran half. All the time Sasha and Sci find themselves getting closer which for Sci is unusual as Cerebrals are grown in labs. A Space romance to relax and enjoy.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sasha was born to a Terran mother on a slave planet. Sci is a Cerebral who was found floating in a life pod by a Federation ship. The ship is manned by a mixture of Federation spacers who have escaped another slave planet where they were forced to fight in the arena. Most of the crew didn't survive and their pilot was critically injured. At first they didn't believe that Sasha could be a pilot but changed their minds after she successfully navigated her way through an asteroid belt. Sasha now has the opportunity to become a Federation pilot thanks to her .mother's sacrifice. Then she meets Sci who fascinates her from the beginning. This is a fast paced story that gives a very different view of the future in space. Sasha is naive but determined to succeed as a pilot and to rescue her mother and her friend from slavery. Sci is from a Cerebral planet where people are born by artificial means and have no human contact with each other. Sasha overwhelms him and he fascinates her. I would describe this as a gritty tale but well worth reading.
I enjoyed reading this book because the main female lead was relatable and interesting to follow. She had her quirks and her daring that made her a fascinating character to follow. The world she's created is one that has depth and draws you in.
Sasha and Sci have a slow burn romance. Sasha is given a "second chance" to lead a better life by her mother, and Sci was from an alien people who can move things with their mind and he was taken hostage by a Federation that doesn't seem what to know what to do with him.
These characters, or at least Sci, was mentioned in the first. So, I get the feeling that a lot more of these characters are going to be getting their own stories.
My only problem would once again be a few formatting issues throughout the book. If you're looking for a good sci-fi romance read I can most definitely recommend this. Out of the two books, this one is my favorite!
Let me start off by saying the beginning of the book was very attention grabbing however I DNF’d it around 68%. It just started to loose its charm i guess. The author makes the MC a horndog for this cerebral and when the time comes for them to actually do something the author cheap shots us. It seemed very anticlimactic and boring. Like don’t put in all these anticipated heated scenes between the MC and the Cerebral when you aren’t going to deliver. So whatever.
It also had goals in the beginning that were quickly washed away and the story seemed like it was at a standstill and the characters were floating around.
The secondary characters Rannn and Pax were okay at first but then the further i got in the story i was soo confused about them.. are they bad? Are they good? Idk 🤷🏽♀️
I gave up I couldn’t continue reading something that felt like it was a chore.
Sci’s not quite sure how he ended up in enemy territory but he knows he has to get out of it and get home. The only way that will happen is by making a deal. Now Sci’s caged for transport, not for what he’s done but for what he is, a Cerebral capable of telekinesis and telepathy.
Partial human Sasha’s desire to escape the rut of her life has her constantly thirsty for adventure has her working on the same Federation ship carrying Sci. Sasha’s fear of Sci develops into sympathy and grows into a sweet friendship with a promise of more as she comes to realize Sci’s predicament.
For my taste, the first portion of the read was extremely confusing with an information dump of species and their characteristics and grammatical errors. As the read went on, the pace increased, the characters gained depth and the direction cleared. Though the premise intrigues along with some characters, continuing this series is uncertain. Rating: 3stars
He was locked in a cage, after being kidnapped, beaten and sold and medically altered. Now he has a cabin mate, a female mate who should be terrified of him, only she isnt. Everyone in charge says the telepath is dangerous and cant be trusted but she knows thats just wrong. Even as she tries to keep away from him and not talk to him, every cell in her body craves his words, his touch, his very essence but can she be with him and still rescue her mother or will she find that Her Alien has some impressive skills that may just keep everyone alive. I really enjoyed this action packed science fiction romance where being different could cost you your life.
A good try for a new author. The relationship build is a medium burn and they get to know each other before the sex. Secondary characters are interesting enough so that I'd read their stories which are coming. Downside Sasha is a bit of a Pollyanna and it wasn't till about half way through the book that I thought her character evened out and her thoughts/ actions realistic. Sci was a different hero and I enjoyed his learning of human behavior. Downside to him is in the last quarter of the book he felt like he took a back seat in his own story. The ending was a hea but a little jagged with the intro to another story. Heads up there are some grammar mistakes.
My reading group recommended this book , and I am glad I listened to them. What a great book. Lately I have been reading Sci-fi books more than my usually dark romance and I have now a guilty pleasure for heroes that don't exactly look human. Even do the heroe and heroine looked human the storyline was interesting and with so many turns that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Sci... there are no words to described how much I loved him, You felt all the emotions and feelings he was developing and got me craving him more and more. He was perfect! New. Now to next book I want a sexy red demon.
Surprisingly well written for this genre and story was more unique than other similar ones.
Don't get me wrong, this is in no way a masterpiece , but it has world building, character developments, decent plot with romance being somewhat of subplot to help along and a writing that lets you immerse in the story and at least partially relate to every character. It does have a drawback of simplicity and a bit overblown situations and how they get resolved. That gets compensated by characters being mature, logical and individualistic.
Sci and Sasha do not have your average romance. Sci does not know what "standards" and normal needs in any relationship. I was a wonder to read how this relationship grew.
This book has a great background with a Federation with all the rules and regulations.
There are what some would consider triggers including torture and losing a child.
I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased , honest review.
With an outstanding backdrop and wonderful characters, the story flows easily from page to page. The rollercoaster lives of the leads, twist together with the other characters within the book to form a substantial feast for the imagination. Even in the future there are prejudices, but as with today they can be overcome and eradicated leaving room for true romance.
A great science fiction romance read with aspects and concepts not seen in other romance books.
Sci is a telepath who ended up in enemy territory, hoping to escape. Sasha a human pilot, hoping her new federation crew will keep her past this trial run. They end up roommates due to lack of rooms on the ship.
Layla Stone transports us to a fascinating universe, well crafted, for a swirling romance, tons of actions and mysteries and the promise of many more stories to come.
Unexpected hostage was my latest happy surprise, I'll definitely look for more books by this author
2 stars for all the main & secondary characters except Sasha (and her mom, etc). The characters were well done and I liked all of them.
After that, this book was so gd boring. UGGGH! I get mad at myself every time I think of the time I wasted reading this. It had soooo much promise but it was its own worse enemy. I pushed through because of the promise but it never realized. Also, BLAH. SOOOOO BLAH.
I really enjoyed this sci-fi alien romance! It's a complete story with no cliffhanger, which I really appreciate. I loved Sasha and Sci, their relationship developed really well, not too fast or too slow! There is a great cast of character and I'm looking forward to reading their stories, especially Pax! I didn't feel overloaded with information as some other reviewers stated, but to each their own!
So many books lately have made human females sound like no it all spoiled idiots who endanger themselves and everyone else.Sasha was awesome she didn't jump in thinking she knew better instead she worked with her fellow crew mates and wasn't prejudice against Sci, she had hesitation but acted like a compassionate person not angry idiot! And loved the rest of the crew they all worked together
This was a very good book and an excellent start to this series. An interesting storyline and likable characters help to keep you fully engaged with the book. I really liked Sci and Sasha. I loved their differences and their chemistry. A very entertaining sci-fi romance. This is my honest, voluntary review.
