The Heat is On

Rate this book
FBI Agent Rio Parker is tired of playing the bad guy, even if it is for a good reason. Undercover with a group of prisoners to babysit a federal informant, he can’t believe he’s been enlisted to fight a forest fire…or sucked into a prison break. Worse—a female smokejumper has been kidnapped. Now, he’ll have to protect her from a rapist, keep his informant from escaping, and stay out of the gunsights of the US Marshal hot on his trail.

Smokejumper Skye Doyle knew trouble was brewing when the group of prisoners joined the firefight. She never expected, however, to be kidnapped during their breakout. But can she trust a hardened felon to keep her safe? Except, Rio is not who he seems, and when his identity is uncovered, she must decide if she can trust a man who has been lying to her…

But staying alive on the run isn’t their only problem, they’ll have to learn to trust each other if they hope to survive in book 2 of the Summer of the Burning Sky.

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

This second book takes the action from the first book but condenses it a bit and shows it from Skye and Rio's points of view, and takes the story further. It has amazing and thrilling action and danger, as well as a simmering romance that kept me turning pages quickly. Rio is such a great character- a bad boy who's secretly a hero, battling with demons from his past and fighting for justice while protecting Skye from some pretty evil guys. He and Skye both help each other with the deeper issues they are struggling with, which makes their quick bond under pressure more believable. Like the first book, this one does a great job of wrapping up Skye and Rio's relationship while still leaving a bit of a cliffhanger with the suspense plot that will finish in the third book.

(I purchased a copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Well, the heat is most certainly on in the second instalment of the Summer of the Burning Sky series! Whew! If you haven’t read the first book in the series, Light My Fire, then I suggest you start there because, while there is a lot of overlap in the stories, this story takes the reader a level deeper and reveals things we don’t know in the first book. In fact, I’d say don’t even read the synopsis for this story, but that’s probably shutting the gate after the horse has bolted!

This is the kind of series you pick up if you want a high amount of action and adrenaline packed into a shorter reading space. You get a little bit of breathing space right at the beginning as the scene is set for the story, but once it gets going, hold on to your hat, because it’s a pulse-pounding ride. And that goes for action and romance!

This is the point at which I confess I may have developed a *teensy*—ahem—crush on Rio. There is something about the diamond-in-the-rough hero that I find irresistible, and Susan May Warren certainly knows how to write ‘em. Knowing the time frame for the novel, I had worried about instalove prior to picking up the story—with a guy who’s believed to be a criminal, no less—but if Skye is guilty of instalove, then so am I! In actual fact, I thought it was handled fairly realistically for their circumstances, which—let’s face it—are pretty intense. They’re both aware of how quickly everything is happening, but they can’t deny the connection they feel either—and the fact that it is an emotional connection that I felt as a reader, rather than simply physical attraction, certainly helped with that.

It’s truly amazing how much Susan May Warren can cram into a novella. If you love fast-paced, high-intensity romantic suspense, you won’t be disappointed with this series!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

I am a huge Susie May fan and have read more of her books, fifty six at last count, than any other author. She has given me more hours of reading thrills and excitement, swoon-worthy and touching inspirational moments than any one else, putting her squarely in my number one most read and enjoyed author spot.

But The Heat is On surprised me. It's a retelling of Light My Fire, book one in the Burning Sky series. The only difference is it's told through the point of view of two of the other characters in the first story. Of the 162 pages, only about forty pages or so is new material specific to Skye and Rio. Honestly, I would have preferred to have just had the new material, even as short as it was, than having had to read three-fourths of the book reliving the same story. Unfortunate because I actually enjoyed The Heat is On with Rio and Skye's story more than Light My Fire, but did not rate it as high because of the repetition.

The short preview of Some Like it Hot, the third book in the series, once again begins in the same spot at the Midnight Sun Saloon to tell the story from Larke and Riley's point of view. This series has the feel of so many of those time loop movies where the characters awake to the same day, ever day. Or the feel of different witnesses to the same event being interviewed to compare stories and piece together what really happened.

Judging by the other reviews I've read I'm obviously in the minority on this, but the retelling of the same story three times from three different perspectives, is not really a plot device that appeals to me. If I could figure out a way to go directly to Larke and Riley's part of the story in Some Like It Hot, I surely would.

My thoughts: THE HEAT IS ON is book two of the continuing Summer of the Burning Sky series Ms. Warren is self-publishing. Fans will want to read Light My Fire as the stories are interacting, but they won't be lost if they don't since there is enough backstory included so you won't be lost. I was anxious to get to the new stuff and actually groaned at the end of this one as it wasn't wrapped up and tied in a neat little bow -- I have to wait until August to read the third book in this series!

Rio isn't who he pretends to be, and that is clear. He's an undercover FBI agent, in jail to keep a guy in the witness protection program safe. And Skye just didn't want to be left out of the firefighting teams firefighting so she interrupted when a prisoner made a run for escape and ended up being taken hostage. Yikes!

There are plenty of twists and turns, adventure, romances, faith messages, and more included in this short novella. Some blood and guts (if you are screamish) and I couldn't put this story down.

Preorder a copy of THE HEAT IS ON today and on release date it will automatically load on your ebook reader. Sorry, it isn't available in paperback -- at least not yet.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

This was another great action-suspense. Though at first it felt like a repeat from book 1, the author did a great job of showing all the events of book 1 from Rio and Skye’s perspective and giving details we were not able to see in book 1. The ending was again on a cliffhanger level and I’m looking forward to the last book in the series.

The romance was a bit more insta love for my taste than in book 1.

This book contained danger, adventure, romance and Godly wisdom, all which I’ve come to expect from Susan May Warren.

Another installment of action and suspense in the wilderness! Picking up during the events of book 1, Susan May Warren cleverly overlaps the stories, offering more detail through point of view and telling a more complex story. Oh, the chemistry! In the middle of the drama a connection between Rio and Skye is so evident. And the darkness vs light, the God being ON YOUR SIDE theme is continued.... proving that HE can provide right where you are.

Overview:

Language/Profanity: Two uses of freaking

Faith: There is some, but not very much.

Romance/Sex: Kissing

Action/Adventure: An undercover FBI agent who is in prison and with criminals who have killed people, and a fire that is raging... there is action and adventure.

Other: As with the other one, there is a criminal who is a murderer and a man who attacks women... but also as with the other one, nothing happens.

This book is the reason I read the first one. I really liked it, the characters, and their motivations and thoughts. Plus, undercover agents are always cool!

I thought the first book in this novella series was good. Then I read this one. Phew! With the prisoners helping fight the out of control forest fire in Alaska, then making off in escape, Skye Doyle comes up on them and is taken hostage. Rio Parker, prisoner but yet not a prisoner, whispers to Skye that he will keep her safe and to trust him. From then on things move alarmingly fast as Warren ratchets up the suspense and heart pounding danger, along with her trademark powerful message of the cross. I stayed up late to finish and now I can't wait for the last novella in the series. Bravo!

Series review on FaithfullyBookish.com

With overlapping timelines, non-stop action, and sweetly steamy romance, this series is the perfect summer binge-read! New readers can jump right in with this series while fans of Susan May Warren’s Montana Fire and Montana Rescue series will reconnect with familiar characters.

Warren excels in crafting genuine, authentic characters, vivid story worlds, and intricate adventurous plots with foundational faith themes. While these three stories are tightly connected, each installment also has its own conflict or crisis and resolution, leaving readers eager to dive into the next book without the use of a cliffhanger ending.

If you’re fascinated by the ever-present Alaskan summer sun (like I am) then you’ll especially enjoy this smokejumping crew’s heart-pounding adventure! This is a series I plan to reread time and again and I highly recommend it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

This is the second novella in the 'Summer of Burning Sky' series. Book 1 finished with an obvious point at which the story could continue, but the author uses an interesting technique like the movie 'Vantage Point'. We go right back to the beginning where the smokejumpers were having dinner at a Bar and Grill in Book 1, only this time, we see the events from the perspective of Skye. It's hard to explain without spoilers, because she and some of the other characters disappeared for part of Book 1, but it's interesting going back and seeing things from her perspective and that of Rio, the prisoner who is not all he appears. It fills in a lot of things we didn't know in Book 1.

I really liked the two main leads in this one. There were kissies in amongst the suspense, and some interesting dilemmas around faith, compassion, our inherent value, and the cost of doing the right thing. It again finishes at a point where we know Book 3 will carry on and I want to keep going to find out how it all ends. Book 1 was good, but I like this a little better.

Burning Hot Story!

Wow! Every book I read that Susan May Warren has written is so full of sparks, action, intrigue, drama, suspense, and some sweet romance!
This story fits that list perfectly! I was captivated from the very first sentence to the end. I couldn't put it down!
I grew up knowing many smoke-jumpers, and firefighters. Those men and women are true heroes! They put their lives on the line every time they go out on a call.
Susan May Warren has captured what they do in a way that as we read her stories, we can feel the heat and smell the smoke. She also has a wonderful way of bringing into each of her stories the amazing grace and love of God. As well as, lessons for each of us, about how we are not failures when we put our trust in Him.
I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It will keep you on the seat of your chair and you won't want to do anything until you've finished it.

This was a quick, captivating read but only makes sense if you read the prequel Light My Fire. It was fun hearing Skye & Rio’s perspective of the circumstances (even if it was a little hard to believe they could develop such strong feelings so quickly…but I went with it). It’s so interesting and creative the way SMW writes multiple perspectives, one from each character, all surrounding the same circumstances. In the last book, it focused on Stevie and Tucker and you observed Skye & Rio’s situation from afar. Now, in this story, we learn what was really going on from Skye & Rio’s perspective. I love how SMW creates series in this way. I can tell that’s also going to occur in the next book. Very entertaining and fun!

Susan May Warren's Summer of the Burning Sky hit the summer with a spark and twist of tension. Being the second book in the series, I suggest reading the first one first. In the second installment, Rio Parker and Sky Doyle get to the tell the same story with a little overlapping at the beginning with the first story to ground the story and then stretches further into the dilemma to show more information to further the plot. The story moves non-stop and keeps hiking the tension as the story moves along. I really liked seeing Rio Parker as a hero and watching his love bloom for Skye. The theme for learning that your past can't define your future rung true with me. As a Christian, I have learned that God can forgive all my past mistakes, and Rio and Skye have to come to terms with that concept to. After reading The Heat is on, I can't wait to get my hands on the third installment and see how this conflict ends.

Great story

I absolutely adored Rio, hero, in this story. He was such a good, strong man, not at all the toughened criminal he appeared to be. We met Rio and Skye in the first book in this series, now this companion book shows the events from Rio and Skye' s perspective. It kept me on the edge of my seat with all the romantic suspense and I read it in one sitting! Now onto the next in the series! Highly, highly recommend!!

What a great pulse-pounding addition to the Summer of the Burning Sky series. The Heat is On focuses on Skye and Rio's perspectives as we continue on with the prisoners helping the smokejumpers battle the Alaskan wildfires, then escaping and taking Skye who came upon them as hostage.
Not all as it seems to be. Secrets, a shocking reveal, and heart-stopping danger unfold during this story. Can Skye trust Rio long enough to escape?

The Heat is on is the second in the Summer of the Burning Sky mini-series by Susan May Warren. And boy, is it hot!

Set in Alaska, the Jude County Smokejumpers, are called in when a fire threatens to devastate the beautiful western mountains. A bit short handed, the local prison adds members to the crew to assist with stopping the fire; prisoners in good standing during their incarceration, or so it was thought.

Skye Doyle is none to pleased to be working a fire with prisoners from the local prison, one of whom is her own father. Something doesn’t feel right about the prison crew; something is brewing and Skye’s gut is telling her it is not going to be good, especially when she realizes her father, the former sheriff, does not want her to give him away nor accidentally reveal he is using an assumed name. Skye is okay with that, her anger and disappointment with her father’s actions, have become an estrangement.

Rio Parker, prisoner and current smokejumper, isn’t who he professes to be either. When he and Skye seem to hit it off, things become tense between the smokejumpers and prisoners. Rio, an FBI agent, is undercover watching one of the prisoners to prevent him from escaping. Having been undercover for quite some time, Rio must avoid the US Marshall who is determined to arrest him.
With his interest in Skye, his watch expands.

The fire is burning hot, both on the mountain and within the team. Will the team be able to stop the fire before it jumps the ridge? And will Rio be able to fight the fire; stop a prison break; avoid the Marshall, all while trying to protect Skye?

Fast-paced, Susan May Warren does not disappoint in The Heat Is On.
Anxiously awaiting the next installment of her summer reads series.

I received a complimentary ebook copy of this book from the publisher and am under no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions, therein, are solely my own.

Top of the line suspense and romance

This is the #2 book in this series and boy are things heating up. This one is told from the view point of Skye and Rio. You will be literally on the edge of your seat as they try to round up the bad guys while trying to stay alive. Oh and of course, there is plenty of romance in the mix. You will want to read this whole series in order. Get the #1 book today if you haven’t already and get started on an adventure.

The action continues in Susan May Warren’s second book in the Summer of The Burning Sky series. The novella length of The Heat Is On may be short on pages, but it is long on adrenaline-laced suspense and sizzling romance. The story takes up somewhere in the middle of book 1, but this time the focus is on Skye, a smokejumper, and Rio Parker, one of the men in the prison work detail. As they are drawn into the prison-break, they must join forces to stay alive.

Not everything is as it seems with Rio Parker. Skye senses that and feels sure that a light lives on deep inside. Readers will love the hot, hot chemistry between the two. Rest assured that The Heat Is On is Christian fiction (no graphic or inappropriate behavior), but there is definitely heat between the two. Both characters live with regrets that influence their current actions. Skye lives with the regret of unforgiveness and Rio with past actions he believed justify the end results of justice. As the danger increases, they come to rely on each other and on God. Psalm 23 and the pursuit by God is the message that runs throughout. The suspense keeps the reader on the edge of her seat; I loved every minute of it! A lot of the storyline introduced first in book 1 and continued in The Heat Is On is resolved. But . . . enough is left leaving me eagerly awaiting book 3, Some Like It Hot, releasing August 2018.

The Heat Is On is the perfect accompaniment for a weekend of fun reading. Make sure to read book 1, Light My Fire, first though. You won’t want to miss out on any of this series.

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

I love Susan May Warren books, though I’m sort of a newbie in her fan club with only having read Montana Rescue series so far (no worries, I have most of her other series lined up to be read on my bookshelf or on my Kindle). This sequel to Light My Fire in the Summer of the Burning Sky series surprised me a bit because a good portion of this book is a rendering of all that happened so far in the first book but told from two other perspectives. Though a bit different from what I expected, I still enjoyed the book and loved getting to know Skye and Rio.

As the fire rages on in Alaska, there are prisoners who break free and are on the run. The Heat Is On focuses on Rio who is an undercover FBI agent, attempting to take down a trafficking and smuggling ring while disguised as a prisoner. He’s strong, solid, and protective as the defender of justice even as he struggles with the darkness that he lives with day in and day out. Only his faith shines a little light into his life of duplicity until he meets Skye, a smokejumper who is everything kind, loving, sweet, and tender as well as determined. Plenty of twists and turns in the new plotline makes the story fascinating and the adrenaline of fighting fires and chasing down the bad guys is high and alive in this book. I particularly enjoyed how Skye and Rio clung to Psalm 23 even in their darkest and most threatening trials.

What will book 3 hold?

In this summer series, the story of a wildfire is being told through though the eyes of a different smoke jumper in each of the three books. In this real summer with so many wildfires burning out of control, this series takes on a completely different meaning as you read about the struggles to put out the wildfire and also the emotions of the people involved.

In this series, additional help is needed and prisoners are brought in to help fight this fire. They are an eclectic group of people-not exactly what you always think of when you think prisoners. This book highlights Rio and Skye. Skye is a smoke jumper and Rio is a undercover FBI agent posing as a prisoner. Skye froze shortly before the prisoners show up and, in an effort to protect her, the crew chief puts her on watch. There is a prison break and, because of her location, Skye gets caught up in it. Rio, who looks tough due to his previous life before becoming an FBI agent and still acting as a prisoner, becomes her protector. For some reason, Skye feels she can trust Rio.

This suspense filled story also shows Rio and Skye fighting their personal demons as well and helping each other heal. Some other reviews didn't like that this has a lot of repeated elements from book 1. That didn't bother me. I felt like I was visiting friends.

Fantastic!

I was a bit worried that having read Light My Fire, this novella would be repetitive. (FYI, these three novellas are three different couples' POVs of the same few days, with a little more to the story added each time.)

But once again, I was wrong.

I LOVED reading the events from Tucker and Stevie's book from Skye's point of view. And Rio's. Both of them added details to the story and kept me enthralled as they worked together to escape a captor.

I've liked Skye since the beginning of this series and I loved that she finally got her shot as the main character. Her desire to help her team and be better than her past, was inspiring and I love her grip and trust in her faith.

Rio was perfect! I loved seeing him grow to believe in himself throughout the book and reclaim his faith too. Seeing him fight for Skye was so beautoful and I loved seeing him get a win!

I love the two of them so much. The instant attraction, choosing to trust each other and falling in love?! It was a wild ride but so, so good! I cannot wait to read Riley and Larke's story next!

Riveting reading!!
What an awesome book!! Don't begin to read it if you have work to do or it is near bedtime as you won't be able to put it down!!! You will be drawn into the suspense, the emotions, the love and the fear of Skye and Rio. Susan knows exactly how to touch your heart and soul with her writing while keeping you riveted in suspense. But she is a master teaser as well!! She makes you NEEDING the next book!! It is not optional "IF" you want to buy it. Oh no!! It is: I HAVE to buy it, I NEED it!! I MUST have it!! ;-)
You won't be disappointed, it definitely is a must-read!!

The Heat is On

Seriously I think Susan need a new sister! I think she wants to adopt me as a part of the family!! Then I can read as she writes and don't have to wait for the new book!!

This is the second book in this series. I was a little bit confused because the first half of this book is basically a recap of what happened in the last book only from Skye and Rio's point of view. The action goes by more quickly and moves us to where book one ended with Rio going one way and Skye the other. We find out what happened with Sky and Rio in the first book too when our eyes were on Tucker and his lady (I can't remember her name off hand). There is lots of action and lots of romance and passionate kissing in this one. There is also a lot of slang - sigh. Do people not understand that slang is just sugar coated cussing??? I'd rather hear slang than a cuss word, but come on, God knows what we really mean when we say dang, or freakin'. I cringe just writing it, let alone reading it over and over. I don't read books with cussing in them, I may have to decide that this much slang is just too much!

Who is Rio? Smoke jumper Skye thinks she knows who this rough and tough prisoner is when he and other inmates are sent to help extinguish the Alaskan fire. As the situation deteriorates though, she questions her initial assessment. With both the raging flames and dangerous intentions of the work crew, Skye must rely on her training and a hopeful rescue from her team as she decides who is worth her trust.

Once again, Susan May Warren delivers an extreme adventurous tale full of danger and self-discovery. Readers can begin with book two, but this is best read beginning from the start of the series. Make sure you read the tease for book three as it promises another action-packed conclusion to this summer series.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.

Rio Parker is not who he seems. But if you look under the surface you may just find the man that he is.

Skye Doyle is a smoke jumper fighting fires in Alaska. She freezes when her equipment malfunctions and it's down hill from there.

Rio and Skye meet when they are forced to work together to put out an out of control wild fire in Alaska. Things go really wrong when Skye is held prisoner. Rio is there to protect her.

Their chemistry is hot and they help each other past their hurts and their demons with some help from faith and inspirational bible versus.

This was an exciting story with faith, passion, heroes, and lots of hot fire burning up Alaska.
