F. A. Forbes (16 March 1869 – 1936) was the nom de plume of Mother Frances Alice Monica Forbes, RSCJ, a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart from Scotland and a religious author.
She was born in 1869 as Alice Forbes into a Presbyterian family. Her mother died when she was a child. In 1900 she became a Roman Catholic. Only a few months later, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart, as a 31-year-old postulant.
She wrote numerous books, including brief biographies of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Saint John Bosco, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Saint Columba, Saint Monica, Saint Athanasius, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Benedict, Saint Hugh of Lincoln, Saint Vincent de Paul, and, most famously, Pope Saint Pius X. She died in 1936.
Concise biography of one of the four female Doctors of the Church. Gives a good overview of her life and accomplishments, and the immense challenges she faced. Teresa is my "saint of the year" this year, so I feel like this gave me a good overview of her life to keep in mind as I delve into her writings.
Concise biography about St Teresa of Avila. A good introduction to her little. I would recommend reading this sorry biography before reading her books.
I found this on YouTube, recorded via Libravox, where many other books have been transcribed into audiobook for free.
I first heard about St. Teresa from the book Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown. There is a statue featured called the Extasy of St. Teresa, the statue of an angel holding an arrow above a woman whose face us contorted with a sort of pleasure. The statue intrigued me and I wanted to look into the life of the woman. F. A Forbes gives a detailed description about this remarkable woman and the tribulations she endured.
Short account of the saint's life from girlhood on. Humility and obedience were her hallmarks, even as she restored original rule to the Carmelites and the reformers fought her. Incredible holiness in her prayer life.
