Very interesting book; every doctor would learn a lot about doctoring from it! From pre World War II days as a med school student in Glasgow, through many adventures in wartime England, to a medical practice in the industrial city of Hull, Dr Gibson tells of overcoming struggles, enduring many hardships, treating all sorts of maladies, victories and defeats, but always treating his patients with dignity and respect. I'll have to find some of his other books to hear more of his story.
Fascinating story of young man in medical school just before WW2 starts. His struggles and bizarre experiences serving as an inexperienced doctor on the front lines, then in a poor area with the destruction of the war around them and IN the people is very interesting. He was innovative in his treatments and the story has humour, warmth for all kinds of people and is inspiring.
On paper I should have loved this book as it was an autobiography about a Doctor's early career in the 1940s. However it took me a long time to read as it just didn't grab me. I don't really know why!
Interesting read. Love anecdotal stories of patients and well as learning what it was like to be a doctor during that time period. A good balance of personal and progression stories in the book
Didn't find it super captivating but it is an interesting perspective from an interesting time. Shows life through the eyes of a doctor living in Scotland through WW2.
