A painful betrayal and a past he chooses to forget. The dream of love and a future she desperately desires.
Rogue Rapids, Book Eleven, Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series
Adam “Mack” Mackey vowed to never return to the family who betrayed him. Needing to forget and start over, the ex-Union officer accepted a deputy job in the Montana Territory. The new start offered satisfaction, purpose, and much needed peace. His nights with the women in Splendor saloons provided companionship. He required nothing else—including love, a notion he firmly rejected. At least that was what he thought until his gaze landed on a newly arrived mail order bride.
Sylvia Lucero escaped an arranged marriage certain to add to her family’s riches while committing her to a lifetime devoid of love. Stepping from the stage onto the muddy street of Splendor, Montana, her gaze swept the area, halting on a handsome, and she’d soon learn, arrogant lawman—the last person she’d consider marrying.
Supper. That’s all Mack wants, but the obstinate woman refuses all his invitations—until one evening when he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Their first supper together changes everything.
Unfortunately, their tentative steps at a relationship face challenges neither anticipate. Threats to local ranchers, the town, and Sylvia strain their fragile connection.
Will the danger prove too much for two people with different goals? Or will the perils bring them together, forcing a shared strength greater than either imagine?
Rogue Rapids, book eleven in the Redemption Mountain historical western romance series, is a full-length novel with an HEA and no cliffhanger.
Shirleen Davies grew up in Southern California. She attended Oregon State University, and has degrees from San Diego State University and the University of Maryland. During the day she provides consulting services to small and mid-sized businesses. But her real passion is writing emotionally charged stories of flawed people who find redemption through love and acceptance. She now lives with her husband in a beautiful town in northern Arizona.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a historical western romance set in the Montana Territory in 1869. It is about two people who are very attracted to each other even though their views of marriage are very different from each other.
Sylvia Lucero has run away from her wealthy life on a Texas ranch. Her father wants to find her a husband that would improve and/or help his ranch. However, Sylvia wants to marry for love. So, even though she loves her family, she decides to leave her ranch and her family so she can live her life as she chooses. Sylvia moves to the city of Splendor where there is a shortage of women. Her hope is to find love there.
Adam “Mack” Mackey, the hero, has left his family on bad terms. He moves to Splender where he is a deputy sheriff. At one time, Mack was engaged, but it ended very badly. Because of this, unlike Sylvia, Mack has no intention of marrying for love
I have great respect for this heroine. She is a very strong, independent woman. She has no problem leaving her family on her own and traveling into an unknown place and situation. Sylvia is also stubborn and speaks her mind. Plus, she has no intention of marrying anyone unless it is on her terms. This is all very unusual behavior for a single young lady in 1869.
There is also a mystery in this story. Someone is killing off animals on some of the ranches and causing trouble for the deputies and the citizens of Splendor.
I, very much, enjoyed the characters and their interactions with each other. The characters are interesting, intriguing and fun to “watch” as they work through their differences.
This is a clean book with no sex. In spite of that, the characters and the stories are complex with lots of action.
Mack, a deputy in the town of Splendor. He has been alone since moving to town. He was hurt in his last relationship. While at war, his fiancee cheated on him and married his cousin. No one in his family let him know what was going on. He found out once he came back from the war. Now, he decided he would never let himself fall in love again. He would never let himself get hurt by giving his heart away. From the time Sylvia came to Splendor as one of the four mail order brides, he was attracted to her. She was pleasant to talk to and was beautiful. He decided to court her but told her up front that he could never love her. If they were to marry, he would give her and their children a home and stability. But he wouldn't tell her he loved her. His fiance hurt him so deeply. Mack is really a good man. He has a good heart and is attracted to Sylvia and wants her to be his wife. Sylvia won't marry unless she has love. Her father was trying to match her with other men just to get more kand in Texas, and all had no love matches. That's why she ran away to Philadelphia to become a mail-order bride. This couple is going to have their share of problems, but that attraction is there. These two have their flaws, but will they work it out. Both are miserable without each other. A great couple with chemistry. Another great story by Shirleen Davies
No one can write stubborn, out of touch with their emotions type of men better than Shirleen Davies. They are trustworthy and likable at the same time, but even more they are amendable if the right woman comes along. She has done so again with Mack (Adam Mackey), former Union solider now deputy in Splendor who is center stage of Rogue Rapids. His independent woman is Sylvia Lucero, who is simply trying to follow her dreams in a man’s world. This historical novel is Redemption Mountain #11, but reads well on its own. Past couples are mentioned or have minor roles but Shirleen Davies keeps the focus on the here and now. There are a couple of subplots especially one with Sylvia’s brother. I liked him too! This is a well-written series of how the coming west helped people to heal after the Civil War, one couple at a time. I greatly appreciate the way that people from both sides of the war are able to make a new life for themselves while leaving the past where it should be; in the past. It is Gunsmoke, Bonanza and How the West was Won all rolled into one. The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Adam Mackey better known as Mack came to Splendor, Montana to work with his best friends from his time as a Union Officer in the Civil War. He needed a place with friends and not his family that had betrayed him. He had been jilted by his fiancee and his cousin and his family hid it from him so his days of believing in love were past. Never again he said. Sylvia Lucera needed a new start away from her father who planned to wed her off for the purpose of gaining more land and prestige. His concern was no longer his children and their happiness. He was determined to arrange their marriages against their will. Sylvia overheard him making these arrangements and ran away to a Mail Order Bride service that sent her and 3 others to Splendor, Montana. Here she met and was drawn to Mack. He was determined to know her better but lies about him stopped her. His persistence wore her down until she sought the truth and allowed a first date. That was the beginning of a relationship meant to discover if his heart would change so they could further in their relationship. His stance on love though was an obstacle she couldn't overcome. Their relationship was complicated and worth pursuing if they could give it time.
Having just completed Rogue Rapids in the Redemption Mountain series, I have a feeling of love in my heart. The story is compelling, sweet and heartfelt. Post-Civil War left widows, orphans and homes lost to the men who returned. This series has so many mended hearts, solid lives and tender moments where the coming together of couples, friends and lovers could start over. Each book finds solace in my heart as this author has put together the lives in Splendor Montana Territory. A small town with a church, bank, mercantile, doctor and busy sheriff, brings hope to those that live there. Of course, there is a saloon or two but it is the people that make up the community they all live in. Grab your Kleenex and hang on while you read this wonderful book and all it’s adventure. You will love Sylvia and Adam as much as I do. Of course, I’ll not forget Gabe, Caleb and others that have become my favorites. I highly recommend this book that fits so nicely into this Historical Western Series.
I loved this story! Shirleen Davies tells a great story of romance in this book with a lot of intrigue and adventure in it. She does a fantastic job of introducing the characters in this book to where you feel like you know them. Sylvia Lucero has basically run away from her family because her Father wants her to marry to add more land and power to the vast ranch they already have and she wants to marry for love. Adam "Mack" Mackey, doesn't not believe in love anymore as his ex fiancé burned him and married his cousin when he went off to war. Sparks fly between the two of them, but Adam has decided that he will only marry a woman for the sake of a life companion, Mother to children,,, a marriage of convenience. You will have to read this great story to see how it all turns out. This story did leave a bit of a cliffhanger regarding another of the deputies in town, so am really looking forward to his story!!
This is an interesting, dramatic, sweet and entertaining story. Mack is a lonely, stubborn and determined man. Sylvia is a strong, independent and determined woman. There was an instant attraction between them, but misinformation held Sylvia back from agreeing to have anything to do with Mack. When she fled her home in Texas, she was determined to marry for love and wanted nothing to do with a man who seemed to only want a casual relationship. She discovers that Mack isn't that type of man, but that he doesn't believe in love. They agree to a one month long courtship to see if they can change each other's minds, but both determined not to change theirs. The storyline is full of action and it has strong, likable characters. I hope Dom gets his own story someday. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this historical western romance. The way the book is written you get a really good feel for what it was like to live in the wilderness in the 1860's. The author does well to pull you in to the lifestyle and the culture on the cusp of real women's independence.
I do think the trouble Sylvia gets into could have been a bit more suspenseful, it seemed to be over too quickly and easily.
The relationship between Mack and Sylvia is sweet. I'm glad Mack finally figured everything out. I'm hoping that there will be a story on Sylvia's brother, Dominic - hoping that he chooses to stay in Splendor. And I'm looking forward to read about Caleb and the bombshell at the end of the book.
Adam "Mack" Mackey has a deputy job in Splendor. He left his family after a betrayal and no longer has contact with them, just wanting to forget what happened and move on. Sylvia Lucero has always dreamed of getting married for love, but when her father tries to arrange a business-based marriage for her, she decides to run away and ends up in Splendor. The attraction between Mack and Sylvia is immediate, but while Sylvia only agrees to marry for love, Mack vowed never to love anyone again. As time goes by, feelings between them increase, but threats to the city and local ranchers can affect that connection. Will they be able to overcome differences and be happy? This is another great story, with a very interesting storyline. I recommend the reading.
Another awesome Western, Redemption Mountain romance by Ms. Davies. This is Mack and Sylvia's story. Mack is a deputy sheriff in Splender Montana whose past heartache causes him to close himself off from love. Sylvia became a mail order bride after fleeing her family's home in Texas. This is a standalone with a HEA but what I enjoy is hearing about characters from previous books in this series when the visit this story. As a Western readers can be guaranteed of shootings, suspense and intrigue. I'm hopeful we'll read more books in this series about new characters in this outstanding story. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review.
This is the first book I have read by Shirleen Davies, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well written and kept my interest. There’s something about the old West that is intriguing, and the idea of a young woman moving miles away from home to seek a husband is exciting. Ms. Davies did a great job developing the characters in the story so they seemed real without being stereotypical. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the Redemption Mountain series.
this is a very good story, could not put the book down. if you have read any of the other books in the series you have to read this one, I love Mack and Sylvia, glad to see some of the other people in the book also, I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review. looking forward to the next book. if you like suspense and romance you have to read the book
Fantastic as usual. It was such a joy to read Mack and Sylvia’s story, I had to finish it in two days. You get a little romance, action, and adventure alongside some great characters. I really enjoy this series! My only complaint is being left with some questions, but I think/hope they are leading to the next book.
This book by Shirleen Davies is another outstanding story in the Redemption Mountain series. As I get further into the series I find I enjoy the stories more. You feel the closeness to the characters and understand better how things tie together. I would recommend this book to anyone.
My favourite of this series so far. Sylvia is such a strong character having left her family nine months before to escape an arranged marriage. She is determined to marry for love. Mack is a deputy lawman who has been badly hurt by his previous love and his family making it difficult to trust again. However, he decides to pursue his attraction to Sylvia while being sure not to fall in love with her. Along the way there is some real humour in the story as Mack finds himself consumed by thoughts of Sylvia. Sylvia's brother finding her and some interest in her from a rival eventually push Mack into making a decision about his future. Read an ARC for an honest review.
This is about the people who live in Splendor Montana and the lives they live. As well as the many things that take place whether it be a bank robbery or a cattle rustling. Anything an happen! This is my review and mine alone Norma Gorrill
I’m enjoying this “older” series by Shirleen Davies. It is good to visit with old friends and to make new ones. We get the romance, humor, danger, and twists that I expect from books by this author. I’m ready for the next one.
I love this book and this series. It's set in a small town in Montana where the people are warm and friendly. Each book gives you insight into a resident of the town that you have been reading about. Each book has excitement and mystery. They leave you feeling good that you read them. Each book is also a stand a lone book.
Sylvia Lucero is a mail order bride that has come to Splendor and loves it there. She has run away from her family because her father wants her to marry to advance their ranch and not for love. She will not marry without love. She meets a deputy in Splendor that she is very attracted to but he spends his nights in saloons with women and she doesn't need a husband that does that. She goes to a saloon to discover why Mack or "Adam" does that and is surprised by the answer.
Adam was betrayed by a woman before so he doesn't believe in love and he will not lie to anyone. After months of trying he finally gets a date with the beautiful Sylvia. When he finds out that sees looking for love he should have ended the courtship and left her alone but he's to drawn to her to do that.
The Crow are on the warpath so all of Splendor is on alert.
