Caidin reviews some fascinating, unexplained mysteries and provides a framework within which readers may determine if the causes of these events are natural or supernatural--or if a third possible explanation exists. 50 photos.
THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL REVIEW. IT IS JUST ROUGH NOTES IN THE ORDER THEY APPEAR IN THE BOOK TO HELP ME REMEMBER AND AS A LAUNCH PAD FOR FURTHER RESEARCH.
Wow is really all I can say. So much more info on Unexplained phenomenon.
Incidents that were new to me: April 21, 1897-- rash of sitings on Texas farms, Barclay in Tyler County. Dog started barking, man stepped out and saw an airship. The man in the ship said his name was "Smith". He asked the farmer to procure some items from a hardware store and gave him American money. Farmer asked him where he was from and Smith replied "everywhere". 2 days prior to this, in Beaumont TX, a man and his son saw brilliant light in a neighboring field. They went to the light and saw four men. The strangers spoke perfect English and asked for a bucket of water. One of the men told the farmer his name was Mr. Wilson. The farmer asked some more questions such as how was the ship powered, and Mr. Wilson answered by electricity. He said he was on a trip around the country and "beyond" and came from a small Iowa town. The stranger said that there were 5 such ships traveling and had been built in this small Iowa town. On April 20, Sheriff Baylor saw a light and went to investigate. He saw an airship and the man flying this one said his name was "Wilson" and he was from Goshen NY. He then inquired about a local man whom the sheriff knew. Wilson said he knew this man from 10 years back. Wilson then asked Baylor for water. Then on either April 21 or 22, there was another visit to a farm near Josserand TX by an airship. Again the flyer asked for water and said that this was one of 5 vessels that had been built in a small Iowa town funded by a wealthy man from NY. Several more sightings and then they all disappeared never to return. What in the WORLD was going on? There has been no documentation of any airships being built in Iowa in 1897. However, this was not the first time. There were a rash of sightings in California from Nov. 1896 to the late summer of 1897.The sightings proliferated. In March 1897 we had the first report of an abductee--Robert Hibbard, in March. Hibbard managed to escape but was dragged by a grappling hook or anchor a ways before he managed to extricate himself. Apparently he was lucky as there were reports of cattle being snagged this way and in the morning, cattle mutilations were evident. Most of the numerous sightings in 1896-7 reported great wings that flapped to get the airship airborne. The sightings were not just rural farms. In April a great airship was seen over Chicago. To explain all of these, the theorists first postulated an alternate Earth co-existing with this one and somehow these crossed over.
Carbon dating established that some cave art dated from 47,000 years ago and included depictions of cylindrical vessels soaring through the sky. These were NOT done by modern man, but my Neatherthals.
4,300 years ago Chih-Chiang Tsu-Yu descrived a flight from the Earth to the Moon in a "celestial bird" which can be seen fairly easily as a modern rocket based on his poetic descriptions. The surface of the moon is described with great accuracy.
The Surya Sutradhara is an ancient Astronomical tex from India. It contains clear references to visitations and describes flights in great skyships and mentions beings descending in these ships to Earth. In a cave in Spain neaer Santander Province, there is a drawing of numerous DISCS. Similar drawings are found in the Sahara and at Niaux Spain.
These sightings began to be written by Thutmose III of Egypt who reigned from 1504 BC to 1450 BC. Romans wrote of strange things in the sky, with many being seen over Italy in 216 BC and in 90 BC in Umbria. In 393 BC, many globes were seen in the night sky. In 1034 AD spheres with blazing flames were seen all across Europe. In 1180 Japan was treated to a vessel on Oct. 27 that shone brilliantly in the sky. In 1211 an airship was seen in the skies over Ireland that were very similar to the ones seen in the US in 1896-7. There are also numerous accounts of Charlemagne being plagued by sightings. I am not mentioning numerous other sightings presented in a catalogue fashion on pages 32-40.
Of course our UFO circus in the US began on June 24, 1947 when Kenneth Arnold spotted "flying saucers" near Mt. Rainer while on a search and rescue mission.
Huge mushroom cloud seen by a JAL 747, flight 1628 on April 9,1984. No evidence of a nuclear detonation, just the cloud. And no volcanic eruption.
Salyut 7 reported what they described as "Angels" outside the space station in June 1985.
Discussion of dowsing. It was used in Vietnam to find water...and worked.
Big Foot discussed. 1924 mining camp, near Mt St Helens.
Large apes once walked the Earth. Gigantopithecus, Fossils found all over Southern China that werte used as medicine and ground to powder. Supposedly extinct 200,000 years ago...US Marines in DMZ on 12/17/74 encountered huge yellow ape like creatures that took heavy fire and were not fazed by 50 cals.
Ghost on USS Forrestal and USS Oriskany in 1970.
Pauline Shaw--the electric woman: her body put out 80,000 volts.
Sybil Leek and her prophecy re Apollo 13.
Bermuda Triangle. Lindberg had a strange incident there.
Battles seen again but in the air.
Ken Larson--accident in FL, 520 Causeway and Tropical Trail on Merrit Island. Recognized all of his rescuers later when he ran into them and told them what they had said at the scene of the accident. But he had been declared dead...
There have been reports of impossible airships in the sky throughout history, planes and ships going inexplicably missing in the Bermuda Triangle (actually more of a Trapezium, it turns out), people surviving fatal accidents, frighteningly accurate predictions of the fates of certain astronauts, and run-ins with unbelievable creatures that simply should not exist. Here, Martin Caidin collects these stories for the reader, some told for the very first time.
These stories are fascinating, and many give a much more in-depth look at the weirdness going on in our world than most would be willing to admit. For example, the fact that UFO sightings didn't simply begin around 1947, but have been reported over thousands of years in almost every culture; or that the Bermuda Triangle is much larger than you have probably been led to believe.
This one is definitely worth tracking down if you like reading true stories of the unexplained.
