Rate this book

Originally published in German as Die Welt der Berge, to and for me, it is most definitely and once again Dieter Braun's glowingly, expressive and often full page illustrations that are the true stars of Mountains of the World, that truly "make" this non fiction reference book for children. And indeed artistically, Mountains of the World is absolute and utter aesthetic, visual perfection, presenting realistically but also imaginatively (and with that I mean painterly) rendered images of mountains, mountain based animals, and even the diverse sporting equipment choices used in or on mountains (such as skis and climbing gear).

However and that all having been said, while the illustrations featured in Mountains of the World, while Dieter Braun's delightful pictures are certainly, are definitely and indeed worth five full stars (and perhaps even more than five stars), with beautiful shapes, both geometric and rounded, muted but still expressively bold colours, the same unfortunately cannot, in my opinion, be said with regard to the accompanying text (which in Mountains of the World means Jen Calleja's translation of Dieter Braun's original narrative). For although what text there is in Mountains of the World, is most definitely readable, descriptive and informative as well as for the most part quite enjoyable (and it does seem close enough narrationally and descriptively to Dieter Braun's original printed words) I really do not understand why the organisation in and of itself is so woefully haphazard, why there are no bibliographical lists for further study and reading included and also, most annoyingly, frustratingly, why in the English language edition, why in Mountains of the World, ALL of the heights and measurements of and for the featured and described mountains are presented ONLY in feet and not in BOTH feet and metres. For considering that Mountains of the World is sold and marketed not only in the United States but also in Canada and that in Canada, we happen to use the metric system, the measurements for the mountains shown and depicted really should be presented according to both the imperial and the metric systems. And truth be told, as it stands, I for one really cannot do all that much with these imperial system measurements, for I have actually never learned feet, inches and the like because when we moved from Germany to Canada in 1976, Canada had just switched to the metric system, and thus of course, I never learned the imperial system, seeing that in Germany, we were also being taught metric measurements at school (and considering that ALL Canadian school children now only are taught the metric system, I really do have major issues even fathoming and understanding why in Mountains of the World, only the imperial system is ever used, as in my opinion, in a truly good and educational non fiction book on mountains geared towards North American, and as such not just US American children, both systems should be featured, measurements should definitely be presented in both metres and feet).

This is a beautifully illustrated non-fiction book all about mountains. It outlines what a mountain is, looks at famous mountains, the journeys people have made and the animals/ plants found there.

Incredible illustrations and good, easy-to-understand information, but there wasn't really a discernible organization to it, which is knocking off a star for me.

Such a lovely book about mountains. The illustrations are beautiful and are accompanied by short sections of text. I can see this book hooking lots of children in reading and I think it could be very beneficial for more reluctant readers who have a linked interest. There is information on mountain sports, animals, traditions/cultures and mountain ranges. A fantastic KS2 book.

Another amazing book by Dieter Braun, whose work continues to delight in this book about mountains around the world. The book also includes chapters on mountain sports, the animals that dwell in their environs and much more. His illustrations bring the material to life, and I found myself googling images of mountains mentioned throughout. I want to visit every one of the land forms mentioned here.

W górach byłam dwa razy w życiu i wtedy nabrałam ogromnego szacunku do ludzi mieszkających te okolice. Jakie Oni muszą mieć silne nogi to kosmos.

This was a lovely non-fiction text that I was able to use on SBT2 . The information is very clear and concise which made it easily accessible to the children and helpful for the lesson. The text enhanced the learning task well as the children were beginning to look at different features used in non-fiction texts as well as form clear cross curricular links to their topic of mountains. The text also has beautiful illustrations that support the text well.

Dieter Braun’s beautiful illustrations make this book. I would gladly add his pictures to the collection of big horn sheep already on my walls.

I just wish my library system carried the original German edition!

Mountains: This is a beautiful book and nice to flip through but is definitely for elementary-aged kids. Still, it is a good addition to not read in full and talk about different things. Would request again.

Standing at their feet is like being in the presence of divine royalty. From their summits, regardless of the height, the panoramic view makes you feel as if you're soaring on lofty air currents. They are home to flora and fauna found no other place on this planet.

You will never forget pausing in their shadows or hiking up and around their sides. Their silence is powerful. In Mountains Of The World (Flying Eye Books, June 5, 2018) written and illustrated by Dieter Braun we journey to points known and unknown; our understanding of all things mountain, mountain residents, mountain climbing and other mountain activities greatly increasing.

Gorgeous book, one I'd want posters of for my walls, but just not impressed with the writing.

What struck me the most in that regard was that 'cave' was explained more than 'tectonic plate' I feel pretty sure most kids reading this would be familiar with the concept of a cave, but explaining plate tectonics (especially with a wonderful illustration or two) could have been helpful.

The organization also seemed pretty random/haphazard, and I wish they'd listed heights in both meters and feet. Even though we still use imperial in the states, listing both would be really helpful for giving kids a feel for metric. And since this is a translation I'm sure the original numbers were close at hand.

Also, and this is more of a weird not sure how I feel about it thing, but the only local people pictured in relation to their 'local mountain' were the Maasai and the Aboriginal people of Australia. No other people were shown except for generic mountaineers in silhouette and portraits of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in regard to summiting Everest. Only listing two peoples (and yet the yeti) while only discussing animals for the other mountains left me with a kind of odd feel. Like sort of exoticizing? I dunno, just struck me as strange and a little uncomfortable.
