My favorite aspect of this world has been the found family. The love, support, teasing, encouragement, etc. that flies back and forth between the guardians, their seconds, and the human support network, is all fantastic. Not to say that there’s not also some disagreeing and genuine fighting, but for the most part, these characters are here for each other in a big way.
I also appreciate that of the 3 books I’ve read in this greater world, I’ve read them all out of order and felt more in tune with what’s happening because of it lol, which Rain mentioned in her review of this book too. There are a lot of moving pieces and people and events and bad guys. Plus, I’ve seen the mains in this story already deep in their HEA in a spin-off book, so it was kind of cool to know where they’re going as I read how they got there. The author does a good job of explaining the world with the immortal guardians, those who are gifted, humans, vampires, and some others tossed in the mix. It can be bulky at times, however it still works.
In this book, Marcus (H) is an immortal guardian who refuses to have a second (backup person) and is forced to take on Ami (h) in that role. He thinks he’ll work around her and does his utmost to avoid her, while she does her best to fulfill the role she’s been assigned, because she owes everything to the leaders of this group (who’ve become like her family). Ami’s also way more badass than Marcus has any clue about at first and seeing her surprise him and win him over was awesome. The book has many action sequences, some tension between the leads (though I’d say this is close to insta feeling due to how quickly feelings develop), secrets, and larger plots against the guardians and the world as a whole.
Written in third person, multi-POV (including some villains). No actual ow/om drama (the H was enamored with a woman in the past and he’s a little hung up but what he feels for the h far exceeds that; the H also wonders about the h’s relationship with someone else and does get jealous over her, even though there’s nothing there). H is experienced and a brief mention of how he’d been with many women without delving into details, while the h is completely inexperienced thanks to her cultural norms that prevented intimate contact outside of marriage.
Some tropes/themes:
☆ Fighter FMC and MMC
☆ FMC has tragic backstory that’s slowly revealed
☆ Special abilities
☆ Evil villains
☆ Lots of side characters
☆ Also lots of found family
☆ Secrets kept until late in the book
☆ Violence and danger, oh my
I liked both Ami and Marcus a lot. I feel like I sometimes pick up books where they’re lusting after each other and the relationship takes off quickly when I’m just not as much in the mood for that. I did have a hard time with Ami holding on to her big reveal until after they were intimate with each other too, esp since Marcus goes through some awful thought processes because he’s kept in the dark. That hurt my heart, even though it was completely understandable how she would have trauma related to exposing her secrets specifically. It was a very Catch-22 situation and kudos to the author for making me feel some big feelings.
Romance-wise, I would have liked to have seen more of Ami and Marcus during less stressful times. They do have cute connection moments and they bond over working together to kill vampires. Both Marcus and Ami also understand who each other is at their core fairly early on, because of the forced proximity and operating in intense situations. The set-up is well done for a fast fall into love, esp alongside two individuals who could use that right person to fall in love with, which thankfully they find in each other. This is also a steamy book and there are a few scenes, sometimes not placed in the best way imo, but still there and explicit.
I loved seeing more of the almost fatherly side of the leader of the guardians and when he lost his temper over Ami because he was feeling protective, I was actually here for that. The hints at Seth’s background are so intriguing. Marcus’s best friend was also a fascinating character (he was in book 1 which I haven’t read) and so was a guardian who’s in the next book. The author does a good job of introducing the side characters in ways that make you want to find out what happens in their stories, particularly when there’s still an overarching plot happening.
The ending is HFN, after some devastating scares and adjustments needed, including mentally adjusting to Ami’s secrets. Ami and Marcus are in love and have a super sweet moment at the end of the book, that was very satisfying (plus, like I said at the start, you see them in later books). There is a lead-in to more of what will endanger the group (and world) as the series continues too. I did like this story and I do think it’s a fun series to read if you enjoy paranormal romance with action and a plot that carries throughout the books.
